hey guys i've been avidly lurking in xda for a year now and running my cappy on GR-11 and I love it to death but my friend gave me his nexus S for free because he broke the simcard reader but i fixed it so now i have a free nexus S!! anyways i need to sell one of them but what should i keep? the cappy has awesome dev support and it can record 720p but the nexus is aosp andseems much more polished as a phone even with much less dev wsupport.
what should i go for? the main thing concerning me with keeping the nexus S is that it might not grow in dev support. is this true u think?
thanks, your friendly e-hood awesome man
obviously keep the nexus S, its got much better software support
NS any day of the week.
Yeah, this is an easy one. Listen to those guys^^^^^.
Before the official specs were released I said that once the Nexus S was available on AT&T I would snatch it up. That is until I realized that it had no external sd card slot. That is a huge deal breaker for me as I flash a ton of roms and keep all my music and backed up apks on there for convenience.
I absolutely love the captivate though and since it has such a large community of devs (I'm including I900 devs as well because how easy some things can be ported) I don't think I'll truly need a new phone for a long time.
duh....the nexus s....it's great for developing
but the dev support for nexus S is much smaller than cappy and also i cant watch hd movies on NS
Keep the Captivate. Why? Because the Nexus sells for more $.

Hahaha. I agree with this comment...
The Captivate with the new GB development that's booming still has amazing potential. Yeah, the NS already has GB, but the Captivate's still a great phone that's been cracked and tweaked in almost every way possible...
Sent from my Captivate.
The Captivate devs will eventually move on now that the SGS II is here. So it's really up to you.
The NS is pretty new but dev support will keep growing for it. And it will get all the latest OS updates first!

Best answer ever!
I would keep the Captivate purely because 16GB is not enough for me. Nexus S lacks a micro SD slot. But if you couldn't live without a FF camera or NFC (lol) then Nexus S.

Frankly after reading engadgets review of the sgs4g it doesn't seem worth it. Hell they even said they wouldn't give up a ns for it.

Sure. Let's trade a phone that has a unlocked bootloader and Nexus brand for a device that doesn't have established Android development yet. Which is practically a Vibrant + FFC (Can be applied to a Vibrant) + 4G Chip. Nothing special at all.
The answer is pretty simple, no. I don't even know why you would even consider selling the Nexus S.

Then why are you even asking? I'm not trying to be mean but do what feels right. I saw your thread in the marketplace and you seemed determined to get rid of your Nexus S. I agree with the posters above I would never give up a "Nexus Phone" for a phone that's got not only a crappy touchwiz skin on it, but is loaded with crapware. But whatever....

exactly my thoughts...
i was eyeing the SGS 4G (vibrant+FFC+4G)... and in the end after reading our local SGS 4G forum, i decided no way....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1065
it wont attract enough development, with the SGS2 (which also has 4G) looming close to shore
i'm holding out for SGS2, and i'll still keep the Nexus S

That's what I did with my G1. I had it since the first day the G1 came out and held onto it onto the Vibrant. Even though there are dual-core processor phones out its not really appealing to me.
Why? Quad cores are reportedly coming out later this year. There are just way too many factors in a phone that I take into account if it's worth getting. The Vibrant? huge mistake in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone but it didn't really fit into my persona.
I'm a huge fan of CyanogenMod. Without CM, I personally don't find it to be a phone that I would be interested in. Sure, custom ROMs are built and all that but they're all based off the OTA. I'm more interested in ROMs that are compiled from AOSP source.
All the Vibrant ROMs were pretty much based off the OTA, so in reality.. it's really the same ROM but themed to look differently with a few things changed here and there. People would say its faster than X ROM but really? its just the placebo effect, of course when you flash a new ROM it'll feel faster. But in order to determine if its faster, you gotta use it for a few days and see how the ROM runs on the phone long-term.
I'm pretty satisfied with the Nexus S, ROM development is starting to kick in. I've also heard reports of Nexus S lacking development, but honestly. Quality > Quantity.
We can have over 10 ROMs but if they're all based off OTA with a few eye-candy changes, its not really much. But with a CM7 base, its huge.

+1.. same with other forums, that's like going to the Atrix 4G forum and asking if its worth it.. a lot of people will say it is just because its their phone. Biased posts.
In the end, its really your decision. But I think majority of the users (at least on here) can agree that NS -> SGS4G isnt a good idea
Hey Everybody,
Well I've had my Nexus S since March 23 and I've really enjoyed trying out various roms and tinkering around with the Android OS. (I came from an iPhone 4 on at&t.) Now I feel like I'm at a crossroad trying to decide what phone to stick with for the next year or so. I have till the 23 to return the nexus to best buy. I bought unlocked and if I do decide to switch I'll do the same with the G2x. How many of you are coming from the nexus s on this forum and what made you want to switch the most? I'm primarily concerned with the battery life on the G2x and updates either from LG or modders. The things I don't like about the nexus s are 3G data speeds (2.5-3 down and 1-1.5 up in my area, Birmingham, AL) and 1 day to day in a half battery life. What would you guys or girls do in a similar situation? Can anyone comment on the "4G" data speeds in this area of the country or in general on T-Mobile? I've read various reports of speeds from 5-9 Mbps down and your average up. I also hope the 4G won't kill battery and we'll have a killswitch when not in use. I'm sure most have seen the mobileburn video, she seemed to put down the nexus s screen in favor of the G2x. I find that hard to believe seeing how awesome the samoled screen looks and how black the blacks are. Anyone who's seen the G2x in store that can confirm the findings she had? Thanks for any help anyone can offer up!

ive only played around with the nexus s so i cant say its better
i can point out things the G2x has over the nexus
DUAL CORE
1080p video/mirroring
4G
and a few more
i am a past VIBRANT/SGS4G owner and can confirm the G2x screen is more "vibrant" than the Super amoled BUT nothing can top the AMOLED blacks/dark colors
i held the SGS4G up to the "test" G2x the local store has with the brightness turned all the way down on both the G2x is much brigher (battery killer?)
and with them turned all the way up (both)
id say the G2x is still brighter/more colorful
i love samsung for their screens but remember just like the nexus this is a GOOGLE phone so updates will come alot quicker than a bloated phone
obviously the dual core vs single core is speaking for its self
and the 1080p video/mirroring does too
the 4G in my area (wisconsin) isnt that great but i did notice hella faster speedtest on my SGS4G than on my vibrant
honeslty if i where you id get the G2x its got a few upsides over the nexus
and for battery i hear its good (1day) for being a monster (dualcore/4g)
this phone is faster than my laptop witch is sad
mines is on its way as you can tell from my sig
but before getting it... i recommend trying it out in the store first
it is kinda heavy feeling (good way) like the nexus s
but its all user preference dont buy it just because people on a forum say its good...
**G2x gets gingerbread mid summer*** (june)
Thanks man, I appreciate the quick response! You make some good points. I'll most likely be going to T-Mobile on Monday or Tuesday to try it out and compare to my Nexus S. It certainly looks like an awesome phone either way so I hope you enjoy yours! The dual core goodness and 4G will most likely be the top selling points if I do dive in.

no problem man!
if your still wanting to see what it can do just google "G2x reviews" they got some staggering stats/benchmarks already up plus you can see a little more of the functionality i didnt describe!
I have both, but my Nexus S is now for sale. The G2x blows it away in every area except black levels and form factor. I thought by looking at GPU benchmarks that it would only be marginally faster...I was wrong. It puts the Nexus S to shame. Apps load dramatically faster, web browsing is much faster and smoother, the whole user experience is just better. This phone far exceeds my expectations. I prefer the display to samoled and the battery life is up there with the Nexus S.
Even though I'm an update junkie (one of those guys obsessively hitting refresh on XDA when I catch wind of an OTA), I'm willing to give up 2.3.3 for the faster hardware. It just really is that much better.
If you would like me to perform any specific comparisons let me know.

Not just work - This has been the case for a long time. The phone will work on either carrier's 3G/4G networks, which is a first I believe.
Anyway, from what I've been reading, the G2x blows away even the original O2x - I saw a run of Quadrant where the planet and moon graphics test was pumping 100-120FPS!
G2X. Period. I sell high end mobile phones for a living and I've owned a Vibrant, a Nexus S now and soon to be G2X. I got to play with the G2X at work for about 5 hours and its an amazing device. The nexus S forum is not a nice place to be, over zealous moderators and crazy noob users that argue over anything... And of course all of them are anti dev because they think they have the best OS ever...
Its a great OS but i do like to interchange between Sense and MIUI as well
JD
I will be getting G2x.
I also have NS, and the black level on NS is nowhere to match (unlimited contrast), but the black level on G2x is still pretty good and the viewing angle is good as MT4 (no defect unit) and GTab.
The only concern is the calling quality. LG phones are weak on this category if you ask me. Calling quality on NS is good (especially speakerphone). It's still a phone after all.
I've had my Nexus S for about 2 weeks and I've been trying to not want to get the G2X, but I'm slowly getting swayed. I paid cash for my phone from Best Buy, so I think they'd have to send me a check in the mail with my money. Until then, I'd have no phone. So, that's what will probably hold me back from getting one.

The waiting is it worth, and it would be max. one week.. You won't regret it
G2x all the way
i too have a NS. Really considering moving to the G2X. The pros outweigh the cons tremendously in my opinion. Quick updates and black levels are the only things the NS has over the G2X. We just got 4G here in Nashville also so im chomping at the bit to get the speeds that i'm already paying for.

You are correct in that it will be "up there" with updates...sooner than phones that need to have custom UIs modified by companies like HTC, Samsung, and *cringe* Motorola. However, there is an important distinction to be made...Nexus S updates come straight from Google, whereas G2x updates come from T-Mobile which causes a notable delay. Nexus S clearly wins in this department.

And yeah the g2 is a nice phone for its form factor. If you like a physical keyboard it has a really nice one. But the with g2x be careful. There are reports of alot of hardware problems, screen problems and other issues. Read up on the g2x before jumping in to that one.

There's no icon or I would have put one in the OP. I was just really surprised to see ICS in so many flavours for the Nexus S. I had all but forgotten my Nexus S because the GS2 is so superior a phone.
Hey man, heard of blogger.com...? Or Wordpress?
Well as much as I am enjoying ICS on my Nexus-S, I hate having to wait 1.36004 seconds more for apps to launch. I want a SGSII
SGS2 is officially supported by ICS 4.0
just be patient
those ICS you see in Nexus S are just PORTs not legit from sources by Google
It's natural that the Nexus devices are the first to get the next generation of Android. They are after all the development versions even though they are sold to the general public as well.
Guess why I have one, and did not wait for the SGS II.

TW is actually not that bad on the SGS2
i would have agreed on the SGS1
The lockscreen of the SGS II is horrible though.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
why is it so bad..you are sliding a picture not really a big deal.
because many times it takes several attempts to actually slide it enough to unlock the screen. The GB slider or the ICS ring are way more responsive.
Also the SGS II lockscreen does not show the next alarm, forcing you to got to the clock app to check if the alarm is set at the correct time.
Just bought my Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store, can't say I regret it... just yet. Anyways, who else bit the bullet? The HD screen, plus ICS and pure google made it irresistible...
Nope. Can't afford a new phone and what's the point? I mean yea you get a nicer total hardware and all, but I really only use my phone for web browsing when not at my computer and texting.
I don't feel it would be worth upgrading from a one year old phone for no real upgrades.
You didn't miss out on anything. I did not like the Nexus. My SGS2 blew it away. The pentile screen on the Nexus left much to be desired. No expandable memory, and the touchscreen nav buttons take up screen space, making the useable screen space limited. Returned it.
Getting a G2x tomorrow to use as a daily driver. Will install the latest ICS for it. I look forward to checking out the devs work around here.

Why would you come from a Galaxy SII to the G2x? I love my G2x, but it'd be awesome to have a.Galaxy SII.

Do you really need that much developmnts going on? You cellphone to make make phone calls, texting, browse the web, games.
If android do need that many, that would mean a really big question on its quality.

Well I use my device constantly, and the screen size was one of my constant conplaints about the G2x. I love the phone, but I fell the G2x better suits my needs.

Of course the on screen nav keys take up space, that's why the screen size is 4.65"? There's less space wasted into bezel however, and that's appreciated. I definitely agree with the Pentile screen though, can't be that bad though.
Why are you downgrading from a SGS2 to a G2x however?

That'd be the same as saying "why are there so many apps for the iPhone". Does it suck that bad that it needs apps to make it usable? No, development is always a good thing.

I still have the TMo SGS2. It dominates the Nexus. I was excited to get the Nexus, but it did not live up to expectations. Best phone out there is the SGS2 by TMo.
I got a good deal on a G2x, so I picked one up. Looks to be a nice phone. Reminds me of my Vibrant, but with upgraded specs.
Nexus = fail
SGS2 by TMo = best
G2x = tbd

I got the Tmobile GS2 and its become my main phone for a month now.
I really really really hated it. Back of my mind I still hate it. I have small hands and 4.7 screen really is too big. I hate the stock SMS app and replaced it with the CM7 SMS.
Slowly the phone has won me over, mainly because its reliable and doesn't have any crap or surprises. It just works.
I would have kept the G2X as my main but the reliability and GPS really killed it for me. Also, data kept just stopped working sometimes. Stupid little bugs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honestly, I've slowly warmed up to my SGS2 but slowly. I hate that it doesn't have CM7 solid and stable as my G2. TouchWiz does ok. It wins for reliability. I've tried to trade it. But really there isn't any better phones out there on T-Mobile. HTC One doesn't sway me because no memory expansion.
Right now I'm slowly moving all my personal data and info from the CM7 to Stock 2.3.3 on my G2X. Going stock for a while and away from CM7 based ROMS. Its a hate/love relationship on the phone. If it were solid and stable as the G2, I wouldn't have gotten the SGS2.
I think everyone should just be patient, not bite the bullet for the Galaxy Nexus, and wait till June for T-Mobile to put out the S3!
Patience FTW.

True, we won't get it for a while.
And the Note is HUGE. I don't have the pockets for it.

Time to get some big boy pants
I love it too. I use my phone a lot for browsing the web too, and the GN makes it a lot better. Nice screen, and flash doesn't lag on the web unlike on the G2x.
But saying the S2 is better and Nexus is a fail is quite wrong. There's still no official ICS for the TMO S2... And that big screen with such low res looks ugly to me. I'm sure Whitehawkx and Roman left that phone for the Nexus for those same reasons.
But the G2x is awesome in it's own ways. I liked it as much as everyone else here with the G2x.

What ROM you running on your GN King?

True, and a better phone than the T-Mo GS2 would be Sprints or At&t's, as they have the Exynos CPU.
And none yet unfortunately, its arriving tomorrow. Any recommendations?
When the Galaxy Note/SGSIII hits Tmo, and the price is reasonable, I'll prob jump ship...
Maybe jumping ship around Aug... Or maybe if LG gave us a half decent release of ICS, I'll stay. Wub u all <3
