[Q] Going to Verizon.. - Captivate General

So looks like I'm suddenly going to version (being I'm not "head of the house hold") it looks like I'm switching to Verizon, so not really by choice..
Anyways, I really like my captivate and am gonna miss it.. I suppose theres no way I could make it work on Verizon? Or should I even be worried about that? Looking at some of their phones, they look pretty impressive.. It looks like the DROID INCREDIBLE 2 looks like that one I like the most.. its brand new and seems to compare with the cappy pretty well.. Of course theres the ThunderBolt but a bit pricey and, according to the 4G map, I'm just outside 4G coverage.. I also did see the Samsung Fascinate but why not go with something newer with a little more power?
Was just looking for little feed back.. hope Verizon coverage is as good as they say.. been with AT&T since i first got a cell years ago..

The Captivate won't work on Verizon's network since they don't use the GSM like AT&T. If I were in your situation I would look at the development section on XDA and see what they have going on for the phones you might chose from. Try to get an idea which have more development put in to them and which might work best for you. Then of course try them out in the store and see how you like the screen and size of each. I know that probably doesn't help much but that is what I would do.

Don't get the Fascinate. A lateral move.

DROID INCREDIBLE 2 is awesome. Not sure about the bootloader status though.
Heck, the cappy can be your dev phone.

the faqscinate is more of a backwawrds move. no much development because of a lack of 2.2 source code. meanwhile the gsm variants can run on i9000 2.2.1 and 2.3.3 roms. though it does have a flsh on the camera and super thin profile which is nice if you dont cahre about those things.
maybe wait for droid charge. basically a galaxy s with a big screen and real buttons and lte. it also has both cameras @8mp and 1.3 respectively. not quite ground breaking but a nice phone.

Goodbye Vibrant hello Captivate

Got my Captivate last night....love it.
what didn't you like about the vibrant?
I have both...the only real difference is the feel of the device. Of course there's also the difference in carrier added software but other then that their the same device.

Personally the captivate feels better than the rest of the sgs family. He rest feel way too clunky for me.

I've only held a vibrant once, if I recall correctly..isn't it a bit lighter? It's been a while but I specifically remember telling myself 'Gee, that's pretty light.'
The vibrant also had one advantage, the group over at cyanogen actually plans on developing for it...

Yeah because cyanogen are famous for only releasing for a tiny share of devices and have no interest in porting even to near totally identical devices. /sarcasm.
You think they'll crack running CM on the totally different processor of the vibrant and then be put off by the odd front facingg camera. Please.
Wherever you get your info you are totally wrong. Cyanogen will be releasing for the whole galaxy line, facilitated by the fact that the different names make almost no difference to the hardware.

It just takes time.
I never used or even held the Vibrant but the Captivate looks way better than the Vibrant and the other Galaxy S phones.
How about those stories about the camera being better on the Vibrant? I always thought that was taken from one review and made into a gospel...
Not true, a friend of mine has the vibrant our photos look exacly the same, besides both phones have the exact same camera hardware.
^^^ This.
Guy that I work with every day has a Vibrant, and our photos/videos look the same. I'm not fond of how his phone looks, though, too iPhone-like with the gaudy bezel. The Captivate just looks like pure business to me.
Personal opinion, the captivate looks the best of the four sgs phones. Epic... boo;-(
Rooted Capivate Galaxy S
Captivate certainly looks the best, but the Epic is nothing to frown at.
Epic is to big, I wish I had money for i9000. But the captivate is so much sexier.

Just as I thought then...that one review I read stated that and then it became a "fact" for many people...usual internet stuff
I have the captivate that I picked up to try out AT&T's service. Like others I agree its the best looking, the Vibrant looks too much like an iPhone. I currently have T-Mobile with a BB 8900, and I do like the Captivate. The only "problem" I see is that if I dont like AT&T's service (which its looking that way), I dont want to be stuck with returning the phone and going to the Vibrant on T-Mobile, haha. Luckily I unlocked my Captivate and can use it with my T-Mobile account, but unfortunately the Captivate doesnt operate on T-Mobile's 3G network, but the Vibrant can work on AT&Ts 3G - or so Ive read. All I know is when I run my Captivate on T-Mobile, I only can get Edge service on it. Its just going to suck to have to either keep the Captivate and not have 3G, or return it and go with the ugly Vibrant...

Took them long enough to get a Galaxy S phone at $500.
I'm guessing you probably could it get sooner if you go through AT&T. Actually, I hoping you could because waiting for the GS2 is painful & I need a phone since I returned my Inspire 4G.
I hope it is true. I have been trying to find a release date for quite some time.
I hope it's true also. I'm getting my captivate back from being repaired tomorrow so I will be returning my atrix tomorrow also.
I've tried to like both the inspire and the atrix but for some reason just can't. In my opinion although they may be faster they just don't match up to my captivate. I find myself using my wifes captivate more than my atrix even though she has a pink case on it.

How do you like the Captivate? I have always been an 'HTC Man' and the Infuse will be my first Samsung. Can you compare the Samsung UI to HTC Sense? Anything else that I should be aware of? Thanks.

I think those that are use to sense on the htc phones will need some time to adjust to samsungs ui. I'm mainly basing my judgement on the screen itself which on the captivate is only bettered by the iphone 4 in my experience.
The infuse has an updated version of the screen. They are calling it super amoled plus, it's supposed to look better than the iphone from what I've read.
I tried getting use to sense on the htc inspire 4g but after using my captivate and launcher pro and adw launchers I just couldn't get use to it. Being that your an htc guy you may want to look at the incredible s which is also at the site I listed, from what I've read it will work on att. Not 100% on that but it's worth looking in to.

I've also read today that the sgs2 will be coming in late may and from what ive read the price is going to be pretty hefty. They were talking in the $700.00 range off contract. I don't remember the exact site I saw that on but it seems it won't be cheap.

I was waiting for the gs2, but the dates keep changing on the release date, and who knows what the price will be. Im hoping we can get an infuse section on xda? and DG gets one so we can have some good stuff to flash.
IS it going to release on March 31st

The Captivate is a pretty good phone; fast, has alright battery life, and a great screen, but INO it needs to be rooted and nodded to make it good.
You should definitely get a custom rom on the phone; without putting one on, you're going tovhave to deal without the lag that comes froohone'phone's file system.
The GPS isnt that great either.
All in all, it was a great phone when it came out but it isn't really worth buying now; there are.better phones out there.

Well I have to disagree with FLAC Vest. I happen to think the Captivate is a GREAT phone overall. Yes, you definitely need to put a custom ROM, but doing so makes the performance extremely good and the GPS is just fine if outside or on your dashboard.
The Super AMOLED screen is great, contrast is amazing. I prefer it to the iPhone retina display. Super AMOLED Plus should be even better. I'm really looking forward to the 4.5" screen of the infuse but may wait for a aftermarket battery.
My only gripe with the Captivate is BATTERY, BATTERY, BATTERY. I bought a 3200mah Mugen and it makes a world of difference, I can finally go a whole day without charging instead of 3pm recharges. Only problem is cases don't fit.
I looked at the Atrix because of the bigger battery but it appears that Motorola are almost impossible to put a custom ROM on and the Motoblur interface is consistently bashed on the internet. Just flipping through home screens was DRAMATICALLY slower than my Captivate using ADW Launcher.
@Phytrax
You make some good points, thanks for making that comment. I think we will both agree that the battery life with stock batteries sucks though.
After having the phone for about a month, I bought 2 spare batteries and a ccharger off of eBay; that definitely remedied the problems.

ive had my craptivate since june. My wife has the inspire 4g. As of right now, the inspire is WAY better than the captivate. I have a custom rom, oc/uv etc... and her stock phone is just as fast, gets better battery with a bigger screen and smaller battery? The screen is good. The gps works on hers etc. The captivate is pretty good after you root, rom, tweak the hell out of it, the htc is good out of the box. Thats the difference. At this point, im getting the infuse when it comes out, with the hope that it is good out of the box. If it sucks, im just going return it and get the htc. Samsung gets one more chance from me. The sgs2 is great, but its going to be too pricey, and it probably wont be THAT great, ala MOTOROLA ATRIX. LOL

My wife and I really liked the Inspire 4g but the 1250mah battery scares the hell out of me. Even the talk time numbers show it not lasting as long as the Captivate. I suspect your wife doesn't use her phone as much as you but I'd love to see some real numbers. Maybe you can fully charge both of them and then see how long you can play a certain movie?? With my Mugen battery I can watch a 2 hr movie and have 70% battery left.
I was very impressed with the performance of the Inspire in the store though, much smoother than the Atrix, and the screen was better than I expected.
I personally get better battery life out of my Inspire, but my Cappy needs a new battery. The only thing I miss is the screen--but it's worth the extra speed in my opinion.

The more research I do, the less I am believing the Marh 31st date. (No matter how much I wish it was true) Does anybody else have any info?
I'm also interested in this. I was hoping to use my upgrade on an Atrix, but after hearing about all the issues it has, I think I'll hold out for the Infuse. I have friends that have Galaxy S variants and they seem really happy with their phones.
Maybe I'll just get an iPhone and use it until the Infuse comes out, then jailbreak and unlock it, sell it on eBay and buy the Infuse at full price.

When I had my inspire I got pretty good battery life out of it but just couldn't get use to that screen on it.
Just my opinion but the screen was horrible compared to the captivate screen.
Now I have an atrix sitting in its box waiting and hoping that the infuse does come out on the 31st. If not I might just return the atrix and buy a tablet instead.
I had high hopes for both the inspire and atrix but neither matched up to my captivate. Guess with warm weather coming its time to stop playing with the phones and get the boat ready for bass fishing.
I keep checking the cells4you.com site and they still have the infuse listed as coming on the 31st.
I am hoping to hear something at ctia but its not looking very good on the phone front. Tablets are stealing the show.

I just had to ask you guys/girls. I went to the store and this old lady in a wheel chair told the sales guy " I want the thunderbolt, where is it?" This thing is HOT?
I love it. Really a good phone...
I don't get 4G here so I think it's alright. Not the best. I'm coming from TMO and had a G2. I hate the battery life on this phone. It idles at 100+ma with the screen off as appose to my G2 which was around 30ma and my Nexus One at 3ma. But the display is really nice. I guess I'm just remorseful for leaving TMO.
Edit: just realized that all the other g2 find I was comparing this to had custom kernels so its unfair to compare both.
Phone is awesome, definitely worth the cash

How do you measure that? Also, you can turn off 4g if its not available in your area.
I like the phone...but seeing how I am right on the line for 3g and 4g, I have yet to be able to fully experience the speed possiblities. The problem I have is battery life, coming from TMO and a Vibrant and an HD2, both which were far better. I'm still experimenting with settings however, and i'm sure once I root, and a few custom ROM's come out, it will be tons better. Nothing but good things can come from a piece of equipment like this.
I love most of it.. There are minor annoyances, but I don't think I've ever owned a "perfect phone". I've gone past the point of no turning back (returns) and I'm happy about it.
I left T-Mobile this past Sunday. After I heard the news of AT&T buying them out, I knew I had to move on. I was using the Galaxy S 4G, which now for sale.
Anyway, I feel that I made the right move. I really love the Thunderbolt very much! None of the phones @ TMO has anything on this bad boy. Can't even tell you how much faster the TB is over any of the 4G phones I had on TMO.
Yes I know Battery Sucks, but Cant Expect Good Gas Mileage out of a ferrari... I can look at other phones and specs, but I have tried everything, and there isnt anything that this phone doesnt do.
And of course the 2 biggest reasons for me getting it:
- LTE, amazing in Orlando, Fl
- Talk and Surf, I literally needed this, and use it a lot when I drive with maps and talking.

I recently sold my iphone 4 (att) and converted to android. This is my first handset. I have been LOOOOOVVVVIIINNNGGGGGG this phone. Now that i can set my phone to stay on 3g or 4g battery has improved much and the LTE speeds ive gotten in NYC are amazing. Was bored of iOS. Really loving the tinkering with this phone. Im picking up my thunderbolt tomorrow from work, and im not going to look back anymore. I do miss my G2 and wish i coulda used it for Verizon, but whatevs.
A lil FYI guys!
My settings currently:
LTE only
extended battery
11 hrs off charger
47% battery left. being using it a pretty good amount also. Seems cdma/lte must be what is hurting battery life.
P.S. - yes i love my thunderbolt and could never imagine returning it for a bionic or anything else in the near future honestly.

Only thing that could make me happier about this phone is if android had as many quality apps and games as iOS.

Yeah I love it, it was worth the wait and I'm not even in a 4G area but its what i wanted, screen size, processor, ram all to my liking and I'm anti Moto now because of eFUSE with the DX and such. X was gonna be my choice but I canceled that pre-order when I heard about the eFUSE. So HTC it is and Tbolt is just to my liking. Rooted in under 5 days and running VirusROM R1B2 and loving it.

[Q] Should I buy a TB out of contract?

I am really really sick of this Droid 2 that VZW replaced my Droid with. I'm sick of Moto services invading my phone and slowing it down. There's no true ASOP build. This phone sucks balls.
I was set on buying an Incredible 2 OoC b/c it was cheap at $440 and saving my upgrade till later, but where I'm moving to next week already has LTE towers.
Do I really want to wait 2 months using this laggy trash? And possibly end up getting a TB anyway because the other phones coming out suck.
Or do I want to get a TB and save my upgrade till later in the Q4 2011/Q1 2012 when NFC Ice Cream Sandwich phones come out.
Don't want a Charge, poor build material choices.
Don't want a Revolution. Bing...
Does it really matter? Not really... You just root and you can put whatever you want and however you want.
Motorola tends to lock their bootloaders and make it hard to do what you want.
Samsung stated that they'll never lock it that way(Not in those words, but given the sense that they will leave it open)
HTC has been locking down their devices, but not as tough as Motorola does.
So basically pick a device with the hardware you want, and make sure it's root and you can install custom roms/kernels.
The T-Bolt is a great phone, and it has excellent community support. I have absolutely no complaints about my phone (aside from the battery life).
That being said, the Galaxy S II that's coming out looks sexy as hell. It might be worth the wait to hold out for that. Honestly, it's totally up to you.
There was talk about tiered 4G plans, which is what made me opt for the early upgrade to the T-Bolt (hoping to be grandfathered in to unlimited 4G). I haven't heard much on that front, but it's still a possibility.
wait a few months
from everything i've ever read about samsung phones, their software support is absolutely horrible. slow updates, faulty gps etc. i've heard a ton of people complain about the issue, and it seems to be the case with all their phones... never had one, but that's the impression i get.
the thunderbolt is a decent phone, but all it really has over the droid x is 4g. the t-bolt screen might be a little better, but not much. in day to day use it's not faster, the battery isn't even close and the build quality of the DX is equal or better. if i were you i would pick up a DX on craigslist for $175 and save your upgrade for a few months. The dx has even more dev support than the T-bolt and it's the best phone I ever had.
bottom line is, if you really want 4g speeds right now, really really bad, then get the thunderbolt. if you can do without that for awhile i think you will be really happy with a DX, especially after using the Droid 2, and you'll spend less than half the money.
the above is just my .02.
Show me a HTC or Motorola phone with latest software on it
Not you fat Jesus
I bought mine off contract and am very happy I did it. Yes there are a few issues, but nothing a little root cant fix.
Though waiting a few months for a better phone won't hurt, the TB is a great choice.

I just have to say that this cracks me up every time I see you post it.
Once you get a taste of 4G, you will never want a phone that is 3G only. So if you are moving to 4G area and don't want to pay full retail, I suggest you get a used Tbolt from craigslist and use it until something comes along that you like better, then sell the Tbolt
i love my TB, i have it rooted with das bamf NTE 1.6.3 and its about the coolest thing since MP3s.. as with others, the battery life on this thing is fkin AWFUL!! i have the extended battery and i still dont feel like its enough, however i use my phone probably more than i should or more than others. either way the LTE network is retarded fast and i'd never want 3g.
First off I just want to say I owned a droid 2 and it wasn't that bad. I jumped to the thunderbolt just to lock in the 4g rate. The bigger screen is a nice plus but other than that is the same thing. I wasn't overly impressed as other owners of the droid x and 2 have stated is not that big of a jump.
Before I end let me just say other than software wise android phones are exactly where I want them. I don't need a dual core chip in my phone and 4g is. good enough for anything I would ever want to do with my phone. I'm sure most of you will disagree but that's just how I feel. Flame away!

I picked up a TB on craigslist for $350. The custom roms still seem a bit premature, however they should evolve over time. Nonetheless it's an amazing phone. If you have a desk job or spend a lot of time in your car, the battery life is not much of an issue. Just stay plugged in.
Got my TB off Craigslist for a fascinate trade plus 150$. I love it so far.. 4g is amazing..once you.have it you won't want to go back.
Roms are not bad. I'm waiting for a complete cm7 or sense 3.0 rom but other than that das bamf runs fantastic.
If you have the cash and want a great phone with a growing dev community, go for it.

Thank you for all the input.
It's funny the other 2 forums told me I'm a moron and this one says Buy a TB!!!
I use over 2GB of data a month so the 4G unlimited (Hopefully grandfathered for life) makes it very tempting since my upgrade isn't till mid July which is around the time the rumors of tiered data plans landing. I'm also not to optimistic about an actual new phone coming out then. Maybe the SGSII but I really hate the fact that it doesnt have a search button. It's a damn Google phone and I use the search button all the time, for GOOGLE, not Bing!
I didn't even think about craigslist. That might be a good option.
As for a cheap DX. No way. It basically is a D2 minus the keyboard. I like the keyboard, I can sacrifice it for a 4G newish phone but not for an X. and I hate the Blur invasion, and locked bootloader. My D2 has been running custom roms. They're just too laggy and buggy still. Fab, Kejar, and Rummy are awesome, but they all had DXs and the D2 ports were just not good. Most of it I blame on Blur still having to be in there. I've been running GB stock blur and custom and for the first time since my D1 ADW launcher gets kicked out of memory and has to reload when I hit home.... I hate it.
EBay is your friend. Lots of Tbolts available every day, including NIB models. Prices similar to Craigslist, depending where you are.

EBay is your friend. Lots of Tbolts available every day, including NIB models. Prices similar to Craigslist, depending where you are.

Honestly I never buy anything without having it in my hands first. Learned my lesson when eBay burned me not once but twice.

Great news! I'm personally going to jump ship to this phone. Why not?? It's getting mad amounts of hype, which is never a bad thing. After hearing someone reviewing it saying it feels like the first 100% android phone they've ever used, I think that says something about it. I'm just scared that this phone is going to be about the same build quality of Yugo, as are all of Samsung's phones
If it has 4G hell yes. I wonder if we can just swap sim cards between 4G phones just fine

It's been known for months that we are getting a variant the only question is how different will it be. The Fascinate sucked...
I don't like Samsung but a 4g lte version would be hard to resist. I'll also have to pay full retail for it so I dunno.!

Still no release date or info about lte our not so can't say if I want this. My wife likes samsung phones, but I've always felt they have had too much plastic in them.

No way. After my adventure with the Captivate, I'll never have another Samsung phone.
Nice hardware. Unless it is pure Android with no Samsung software, open, and on anything but AT&T, it might not suck.
However, I'm on the TBolt, now, so no need to change.
There's a lot to like about the Galaxy S and S II phones. I was pretty happy with my Captivate, but hated AT&T's coverage. Sure the stock phones were terribly slow with the pre-installed carrier junk and RFS file system, but the developers took care of that. I believe they've had GB available for a while now since Samsung released it for the Galaxy S phones in Europe. Then you get the absurdly thin and light phones and the beautiful amoled screens.
Any Galaxy S II variants over here will likely be crudded up just as badly as the original Galaxy S phones but that's nothing the developers can't fix. You can always wait for the Galaxy S III as well.
I'm not wiling to pay full retail for any phone much less a Samsung. Seems like a sweet device internally but no thanks. I'm quite happy with the TBolt!

I know a lot of people feel that way. I don't know I actually like what Samsung is doing lately. I'm also one of the few that really like that plastic feel on the phone, makes for a much lighter phone. To tell you the truth I wish I would have kept the droid charge instead of going back to the thunderbolt.
I guess everyone has their own taste.
Leo Laporte mentioned the G2S on This Week in Google podcast. He said it's a pretty sweet phone.
I am now one of the lucky Tbolt owners that now has a perfect phone. Not one issue. Even the battery life is at 16 hours with heavy use and screen at 75% all the time. Nothing will separate me from my Tbolt....unless they make a tbolt with a 4.5-5 inch screen as thin as the G2S. Thickness and weight are the only things I would change.
Crazy to think I'm to a point that a screen smaller than 4.3 is to small.
