do you have any of these problems?
Q1:Bottom removable cover doesnt fit right- leaves a gap, makes noise when pressed.
Q2:Large >1mm gap between the glass of the screen and metal. Not like in reviews, official photos.

I disagree as these problems effect everyone and are both software related and should both be fixable when we can build custom roms

orange uk fine. I think the UK batch are all good build quality.
@Edward Lowy
not if you can accept them and taking the risk
@ben_pyett
the wifi cant be software, of course you can change a little bit the sensitivity, the bad antenna placement and cover will still remain

That's my point - they don't seem to affect everyone. Both issues affected me but clearly that is not everybodys findings.
There are well reported software issues with the buttons, basically the phone detects the background ambient light levels and decides whether our not to light up the buttons
Sometimes in a dark room the presence of a bright light source such as a window or a bright Tv stop them from lighting
unfortunately there us nothing we can do.
Although considering that the buttons don't change positions I always know where they are and which one is which so I can't see what the real problem is?
with regards the wi fi issue, there is another thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051674
Where someone has posted a possible software fix, although you need S-off in order to apply it.
I suffer from both of these problems.
But, Fortunately I don't hold the phone in landscape so the wi fi issue doesn't bother me, and I know where the buttons are so don't need them to be lit
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
I shared this on the Desire S Owners Poll thread and I am sure some of you might have seen it but here is my device I received this past Tuesday via FedEx from Singapore(It is an Indian device according to the IMEI info. HTC UK told me this btw.) Major problems with the battery cover. We need to make HTC be aware of these issues.
can you not just ask for a new one under warranty?
I'm in the UK and have had my DS 3 full days perfect no floors no wi-fi issue in landscape mode and set up with current OS and skinned.
Though day 4 bottom corners lifting by Home and Search keys and also have the smallest gap between unibody and screen near volume rocker and touch keys. The gap is enough to see back light coming through in the dark/dusk.
Hope this helps, i have a brand new (not refurbished) replacement coming first thing tomorrow will report on that with any news or similar issues.
Any of you sim free owners have the UMA signal boost app on the Stock shipped ROM 2.3.3 just interested?

Thanks guys was looking at stock rom to remove 'bloatware' but the app on the orange rom is handy think i will just use launcher pro to hide unwanted apps rather than install stock ROM.
Just waiting on the courier for my replacement handset fingers crossed no faults with this one.
Ok so brand new replacement handset and i still have these issues the bottom right corner is already showing that it's raised in comparison to the bottom left corner and there is still a visible gap on the left of the screen can see the charge port through this and light still shining through in the right light.
Looks like bad quality control from HTC will be contacting orange in a mo as i'm still in my cooling off period. I am really disappointed Android OS is great for the customisation but this handset seem's to have been rushed in the build quality.
Hope this helps.
my device has a perfect screen
so i think that it is just in some locations...or maybe the batch that they currently have at your buyer is defective

tested one at my local o2 store, no problem, or maybe because it has the security stuff on it so i didnt get a good feel.. i ended up getting a sgs 2 yesterday though
Just read the above posts and now concern that my phone is one of those bad batch (O2 UK).
Firstly there is a gap at the top of the screen. (above the htc logo) big enough to stick the edge of a paper.
Second, there is light leakage on both the bottom corner (home and search key) only viewable when looking at a certain angle.
Third, is the bottom of the screen and the metal part meant to be even? As my bottom screen is more raised.
Finally, is all of the above problems are covered by the 12 month warranty and in which case I can ask for a replacement from O2?
Thanks in advance.

On my newly exchanged sensation, I have noticed that the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the phone are not evenly lit up. The home button is slightly brighter than the the menu button. Also the search button is a little brighter than the back button. My first unit that I returned cause of battery issues had perfect , even lighting on all four buttons. Also, on this unit, it makes a creaking noise when I press the screen on three bottom left side. I might return this one also.
Has anyone noticed the same uneven button lighting on their phone?

Yeah, the menu and back are lighter, but very minimal.

Yup. I know from reading at the thunderbolt forums that htc used 2 LEDs to light up the four buttons and they had the same issue so this maybe the case also. Anyone else with the same issue?

Ya, I should do it, especially since it also has that lower right screen creak/click thing going on . This whole experience has not been that great. I mean, I love the device but would love to have 1 great unit free of these defects. Then I will truly enjoy this masterpiece!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I'm not saying it isn't an issue. but of all the issues i've seen so far, if when I get mine this is all it suffers with I'd be happy. Not too sure about the creak tho, that would be a bit off putting. HTC are normally good built quality, so a creak would be annoying.
There have been a fair few faults with this device so far, but it does seem that none of them are affecting all handsets, so hopefully there aren't any major faults going on
I think I see what you mean OP about the uneven backlit keys. For my device its minimal and you can barely notice it. I do however have light leaking from the seam next to the left of the home button. Does anyone else have this?

Same for me, very minimal. I think it's the same for all of us, actually I hadn't noticed it until I read your post and had a careful look at it.
But your creaking noise, if not coming from the back cover not completly locked correctly, so coming from the screen itself, is more worrying, your screen must be badly stuck, like for some people on the forum, so you should take it back
(see if dust is coming under the screen in the creaking area)

I also have the light leaking from the seam near the home button. At first it looked like a glare, but it's obviously a crack where the light is leaking through. It's bothersome to me (my annoyance is increasing) and I think I'm planning on returning (exchanging) the phone. it's concerning to me, because I don't really know where that opening goes, i.e. where will the dust, sweat, lint, etc. migrate to once it inevitably gets inside there. Of course, everything else seems ok for now, so I wonder what other problems I'll get with a new unit.

THIS IS THE WORST, MOST SHODDILY CONSTRUCTED PHONE THAT COULD EVER EXIST (Not)
The "build quality" of the phone is fine. There are a few problems associated with being early adopters, that a small fraction of people on XDA have. As far as I know, everyone with major issues had them resolved by returning their phone, in store and getting it replaced on the spot.
There are different displays one bye AUO and one made by Sharp, if you're having trouble and prefer either display you can go in-store and exchange it, after telling them the issues you're having with your phone.
Furthermore many of the so called "issues" with build quality are BS manufactured by XDA-ers. Like:
"If I turn of my screen and hold it at a 45 degree angle while shining a flashlight at it I can see a spec of dust under the screen, I'm really really worried ='("
or my personal favorite:
"When I press down on the buttons on the bottom of my screen I hear a slight creaking sound WTF HTC!?!?"
My personal second favorite is THE LAGGY SENSE ISSUE, which essentially goes like this :
"I saw a video on youtube and the HTC EVO 3D runs the HTC Sense homescreen carousel milliseconds faster and smoother than the HTC Sensation, WTF HTC !!! IS THIS WHAT WE'RE PAYING FOR!?!?!?"
- I would like to note that this issue only came into existence after said video made its way to the forums and someone decided that it was an "issue" that a slightly newer phone, with slightly better hardware and a slightly more optimized ROM, ran sense 3.0 slightly better than our phones do at the moment.
- They aren't buttons... this is a touch screen phone and just because they look like buttons doesn't mean that they should be pressed like buttons.
- Wifi-Signal attenuation while holding the phone, in landscape, a particular way IS real, but only if you are far away from your router. ALL phones experience signal attenuation when all or parts of the radios are covered, our phones do not lost Cellular data signal when held in landscape as has been erroneously reported in some places.
Now I will tell you about my experiences with the phone. Both cameras perform poorly in low light conditions and other than that it's a beast of a phone. Absolutely phenomenal.Strangely enough, I don't hear many people talking about this, actual issue where the phone is not performing as one might realistically expect it to perform.
I got my device on launch day and haven't had one "issue" yet. I have seen and others have noted that some dust can get inside of the phone's case, near the headphone jack. I would consider this another NON-issue as it has not been shown to cause any issues. Furthermore dust frequently gets inside of electronics, that's why the good lord above invented compressed air. Some XDA-ers inhale it then try to find issues with their devices, I will use it to clean my phone in a few months, the same way that I do to my desktop PC or the way my little brother does to his gaming consoles.
It's a terrible phone if you only use it at 45 degree angles, in the dark, while shining a flashlight on it, with the display turned off as you press extra hard on the touchscreen (because YOU believe they are buttons to be pressed and not a screen to be touched), using your phone a mile away from your home router, in landscape while completely covering the top of the phone and watching videos of HTC EVO 3D's performing slightly better and getting jealous.
If you use your phone like a normal end-user or even a power user and NOT a beta tester in a laboratory setting then the phone is amazing.
I rest my case.
Thanks for the info guys. Much appreciated.

I am not sure what these guys are referring to as having questionable build quality. If anything that would apply to the G2 and that was my last phone...well, right before the G2x horror.
You should be quite happy with the Sensation, if you have nothing against HTC Sense, as it is a very good device. Very good. I am certain it will be bested in some way by another high end Android phone in a few months, or weeks (there's always something new) but I am flat out thrilled to be using one right now.

Having had HTC HERO and A HTD HD7 I was more of inclined to go for the SENSATION,
But after hovering around both threads decided for the GAlaxy s2 due to better back camera and front camera(2mp) and also for the fact that it came with bootloader unlocked
ANd I guess that was the best decision I made cause of one more reason being....
You can flash the latest firmwares on samsung Devices with ODIN without the NEED TO ROOT which I think is really cool.
I am already on a leaked version of 2.3.4 running beautifully with gtalk video working really great and have not even rooted my phone yet
Just my thoughts.........
I love this phone, but I'have noticed two problems and I like to have your opinion and advice.
1. When i touch the right area of the screen a "tic" (sound) and a little movement happened. I try to understand the reason inspecting the back cover and the battery without success.
Is this a normal issue with the Sensation?
May I send my device to ask the replacement (warranty)?
2. When I grub my device in landscape mod with both hands I loose almost all my wifi coverage, but i think this is due to the position of the antenna and the unibody cover.
Are there any kind of workaround (special cover, mod, ...)?
Sorry for my bad English, I tried!
In the "Get the white frame for your sensation" thread in Accessories, a lot of people said the Wifi Deathgrip issues went away, plenty of people have had that issue.
As for the ticking, that's very weird. The only ticks you should ever hear or feel are haptic feedback on the 4 capacitive keys (if you have that enabled under Settings > Sound) or the camera shutter when you enter/exit the camera.
Hold the upper part of the phone = wifi signal drop greatly
Its one, may be the only design failure of Sensation

For the movement in the right side if the device, my device had the same exact thing but I put a small piece of paper between the battery cover and the device on the bottom right side and it has stopped.
thanks, i'll try. But mine problem seems to remain also without battery.
Far from the only hardware issues... The creaking can be fixed with paper under the battery, or a bigger battery.
And the wifi death grip is indeed normal, unfortunately...
Yup the deathgrip wifi issue does exist. You can try experimenting with different grips when using wifi on landscape.

Im wondering if other people's 8X's creak when squeezing the phone sideways or on the screen after a few minutes of use? Also I can see light leaking from the bottom where the screen meets the body of the phone. Want to know if I should get an exchange tomorrow at Microsoft Store since after that I'm pretty far from any Microsoft Stores until I'm past the return date.
My volume rocker squeaks a little and also moves back and fourth when I shake the phone. At the bottom of the phone on either side of the charging port there are light leaks, and on the left and right bottom sides too, which is annoying in the dark. Tempted to take mine back to Phones4u and ask for a new one..
Got a new phone and its much better. I didn't notice if light leaks through bottom anymore, but the screen is definitely more flush though not PERFECTLY flush.
Much more solid phone and power button also has a click and is easier to press now. No more creaks now.

I'll go and exchange mine then I think. Can you take a picture of it in the dark to show if you have any light leaks and post it up? I'd be very appreciative.
My power button feels a bit odd too, it doesn't have a click and feels squidgy, was thinking that earlier. Might have a go on the replacement in store and look at it in the dark to check for light leaks.
Edit: I've attached the best picture I could get of my light leaks/screen fitting. This is with brightness at max, taken with my DSLR. Was yours this bad? I'd be interested to see if this is an issue with other 8X's or just ours.
I haven't had any problems like that with mine yet. I started using a case after the first week though. Hopefully a replacement will fix the issue for you. That's a lot of light coming through.

It is, it's awful. I'm kind of regretting getting the 8X over the 920 to be honest, the blacks seem very light on the screen and the colour seem very washed out (maybe it's just coming from an AMOLED screen that is doing it), might see what they can do for me in store today. We'll see.
Took it back today, they didn't want to replace it but they did in the end. Tried out two brand new Yellow ones in store, both had the exact same issue. Tried a black one, and it's perfect, no light leakage at all. Maybe it's an issue with the Yellow one. Poor effort HTC.
Accepted the Black one as a replacement, but I'm trying to sell it and get a 920 like I should have in the beginning. Doh!

Meh. I have the black one and its an issue all right. Yesterday, my screen totally died. Went to HTC service center today, and the light leakage and inperfect screen flush were listed as "possible user damage". If they decide to classify it as user damage, i'll be pissed.

Yes, when I had mine it creaked and the camera lens moved around a little, and the screen was a tad squishy on the bottom right...HTC consistently has awesome designs but
There is always something wrong with their build quality that is maddening.

Crack over Speaker holes
Hi guys, just to add to the build quality problems... I've just had a replacement from Phones4U of my yellow 8X. After just under a month of gentle and careful ownership i noticed a crack appeared over (and through) the holes on the back for the speaker. The crack got bigger over about a week before i had chance to go ask about it in store. to be fair to P4U, the person i spoke to was great and they swapped it out in store, even though i'd originally bought it online.
Came back to this thread to mention it and now having read everything else i'm noticing a bit of creaking when i squeeze the sides and both phones had had the squishy screen edge picture thing which i first read about being a problem on the ONE X. Not sure if that's just normal anyway though really. Oh and neither of my power buttons have clicked and i find myself missing my easy to press home button on my old iPhone 3GS!
Same again!

Well after a month (again) my replacement 8X has developed the crack in the same place.
Phones 4U are gonna swap it for a black model this time, i'm wondering if it's the yellow plastic specifically that's bad. They were less cheery and helpful with the exchange this time stating that because it's a cosmetic fault they don't usually replace them and the first time was 'a goodwill gesture'.
I'm starting to wish i'd just gone for the extra price bump for the Lumia 920 instead now. Guess i'm lucky they've replaced them at all though but i still don't think a phone should crack of it's own free will after 4 weeks! http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/advanced/drive.png
They also said it's not a widespread fault that they've been made aware of, i was actually hoping someone else on here would have had the same experience to help me confirm it wasn't just bad luck or whatever. I guess everyone else just has the corners rubbing off instead!
I guess I got lucky, my blue 8X seems pretty solid and all the buttons are clicky.
Hi there,
I would give an help to all the people that are waiting to buy a z3... I can imagine, reading all posts about production issues, that they are really demotivated to buy this smartphone, and maybe they will wait a month, a month an half, hoping that Sony will resolve all this issues. Well, I don't know if the problem is associated to the week of realization.... but, we can have a better idea if we put here the week, and if our z3 have problems of gaps, lines of lights from gaps, and other problems... I'll start with my product code:
(you can find the code on the little piece of sheet under the memory card)
14W36 - model D6603
Problems
- Glass is not centered ( gap on the all right side )
- line of light coming out from the right side
- light of the led notification coming out from the gap on the top left corner ( if the led is on of course)
Same batch/week, completely centered glass (as you have seen), screen light leaking from bottom left corner and led leaking like OP has said. Other than that it's all good, it seems.
Don't know if the model makes any difference or not bu mine is D6653.
Someone else who wants to share infos about his phone? Come on guys
14W34
No problem so far...
Out of four I have gone through, two had gaps, ironically the gap ones had no light leak lol. All are from different batches. Last was 14W40 (Gaps) and current one is 14W39 (No Gaps).
how big are the gaps you guys got? On mine I can stick the corner of a thin piece of paper on all sides. Would that be considered a gap? Its symmetrical overall. Mine is at 14W40

No thats not a problem, that should be fine. When you can fit a postcard then its a problem aesthetically for me, because at that size it's very visible, this only generally happens if the screen is fit off centered.
I can share one information:
This is what happens if you read the internet too much. People tend not to praise the device they buy - because they are too busy being happy with them. People mostly post negative stuff - but that doesn't mean negative stuff is the only thing that happens...
It's good to be aware of potential issues, but if you read into it too much - you will get discouraged from buying any device.
Now about my device - no problems apart from a small light leak on the bottom left corner, but I can't consider that being a problem as it's only 3mm tall.
I checked every little bit of my phone, i haven't seen any bleeding light nor gap, So i'm not sure what everyones talking about, My model is D6603

You got a good device enjoy.
Slight gap is normal, light leak is actually the backlight being seen thought the frame/LCD gap. The Sony rep for TMO said its a known issue (big gaps/lightbleed), not everyone but a significant amount are getting it, TMO apparently got dumped bad batch/es, quality control wise.
To anyone thinking of avoiding the device, please don't. Every manufacturer has production issues here and there, aka HTC One M7 purple cam issues, G3 back cracking near mic etc. As Akiainavas mentioned its mostly people with issues on forums complaining (like me), many with good devices won't go on to say how great it is as they are too busy enjoying.
All I am saying is check your device, and get a replacement one if it has defects.
With my current Z3, I am very happy love it as much as my LG G2.
So mine has a screen gap on right side but no light leak, im assuming if my gap was bigger it would be a defect?
