2.3.4 Any changes you've noticed? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Besides what is listed in the Google Mobile forum post, since 2.3.4 my Nexus S Compass is actually usable and accurate. Used to be all over the place before.

The 2.3.3 color change did not bother me, but the 2.3.4 update changed the colors, again, and it doesn't bother me. It also fixed my girlfriend's nexus s that experienced total network loss and would not ever come out of airplane mode.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

I noticed that the radio baseband has changed it was kb1 now its kd1
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App

Noticed new radio (and likely some radio framework from Samsung) allows for much quicker switchover from WCDMA Only to GSM Only in the Phone Info Set Preferred Network Type. this used to take upto a min to switch between modes; not it's seconds.

The colors are vastly improved from 2.3.3. They're actually perfect now. Also I've noticed that the launcher now has a black border around the dock (with the browser and phone icons).

i still have both wifi and 3g icons when i'm connected to wifi, and the wifi icon shows zero signal even though its not.

GT Video?
I wish it introduced something useful to the Nexus S, like 720p video recording, or WiFi Calling, or Google Voice in-dock notifications....

I'm stuck on edge now....can I try to reflash anyone??

I've never noticed this before, there's this "talkback keyboard" now. I'm not sure what to think of it, I've followed the tutorial and it seemed pretty bothersome. I'll have to check again what exactly it's supposed to do and how it's supposed to work, it's more than just a keyboard it seems, almost like a trackpad+keyboard+keypad+gesture area for commands, all in one.

Someone pull the Gtalk video app please!

Tags are now finally deletable!

Video chat won't work over 3G on T-Mobile. Says Wifi only.

Gtalk works good but fring does not

They finallllly got it right! 2.3.4 is sweet!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Better colors? Black borders on the launcher dock? I see zero visual changes whatsoever.

Now(2.3.4) I can delete NFC my Tags!

GTalk video is only over WIFI.
GTalk video is really bad with quality (like 3g video in Europe in 2002).
(work faster at least for me).

this thread makes me want to wet my pants! if the compass if usable, then they've dampened it! but nfc tags were always deletable on 2.3.2? just click and hold on the tag in tags app.
EXCITED TO UPDATE!

I could always disable and delete tags :s
Excited for nightly with update xD

Can anyone confirm if graphic acceleration has been enabled in the browser.
Seems much improved when scrolling image heavy sites.

has anyone got tango to work without lagging like crazy

i've been looking for a video chat app for my nexus s and apparently, only Tango supports the front facing camera right now. BOOO Google for not having a stock app for this. however, when i do make a video call to someone else, it's super laggy and clitchy, to the point that it's practically unusable. it keeps telling me that the network speed is too low, but i made a few calls on wifi with at least 7 mb download and 4 mb upload. this can't be the case. Does anyone else have this problem. is there another app that would work with nexus s. Fring has good video quality with no lag, but it doesn't support the front camera yet.
I was amazed at how well tango worked for me. On 3G no less. Though I'm in an hspa+ city so I benefit and get outrageous 3G data speeds.
But for me Tango works better than expected.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Edit: Just checked from my Nexus S to my Galaxy S (i9000)...both on 3G. Was pretty smooth, actually. Front camera wouldn't work on the SGS, though. Back camera fine.
Same here...WiFi to WiFi and so laggy/choppy it was unusable.
I have to test it on my SGS to see if the lag was from the NS, or from the app in general. I suspect NS issue, since Tango gets a lot of positive talk about it.
This is one area Apple really hit a home run on: iPhone 4 on jailbroken 3G connection and FaceTime to another friend was like he was in the room with me. Awesome.
Moved to Q&A
this just pisses me off. i dropped $580 on this phone cause it was supposed to be the most advanced, but nothing f'n works on it. no new market, no video calls, no 4g, useless nfc, and half the apps don't work cause its 2.3.1. i know it will be fixed as soon as devs get up to date, but still. i love the phone, but it's just a let down a little by google itself.
i just made a call on 3g to another nexus s, and it was still laggy. can anyone verify that they are having these issues. i don't know if it's just the nexus s, or some other reason.

Did you see my edit to my previous post where I said that a call from my Nexus S to my Galaxy S i9000 worked just fine? Both phones on 3G (one T-Mo, the other AT&T).

yes, thank you. i did see it, but i just wanted to know if others had it. it seems that you are the only one that i know that does not have issues. my two friends, both with nexus s, have same issues.
Yeah, you are the only one who's gotten it to not suck. I guess you are lucky. I can't wait for voodoo to finish their app.

Sorry you guys are having issues, but the app has an average of 4 star ratings and lots of "works great" posts, so I'm hardly the only one who has gotten it working.
Really frustrating for you, I am sure.
Voodoo video app? What's that. I just wish Google would give us video that works across platforms in the gtalk app.
Yeah I'm sure it works fine on OTHER phones, hence a good rating. Anyway oovoo looks good, its in market and has a desktop client too, and has announced upcoming support for ns!
Edit: I said voodoo in the last post which is a donut shop here in Portland. Sigh. Its oovoo I'm talking about.

You mean there are other phones besides the NS...? Wow, I had no idea. LOL.
Seriously, of course I was have a senior moment.
very very surprised of how smooth it was on a data network, then i put it to the test on my wireless n router...ooooo its just unbelivable how great it was
The short answer for me is no.
Tried Tango on my Nexus S and my Galaxy S on 3G and wifi.
It's lagging all the time.
Tango lags for me too with a buddy who is on his wifi. He reports that tango works well for him to others (he has a G2). I'm starting to wonder if it is a latency consistency thing on my NS as bandwidth speeds are strong on my internet wifi.

Pretty sure Qik worked fine for me.
Qik wouldn't recognize my FFC... THAT blows.
Edit: Verified again just to be sure; neither the Qik stand-alone app nor the T-Mobile Qik Video Chat app recognize the FFC on the NS. Regular Qik won't allow the changing of the chosen camera, and T-Mobile's Qik app allows you to change the selection to the FFC, but the on-screen feed never changes from the rear-facing camera. BUMMER.

[Q] How many of you are having GPS issues.

Just trying to get count on how many are having GPS issues.
symptoms:
1) no direct lock
2) no lock at all
3) triangulated lock
3) Shows you driving 15 ft off road
4) "Bounces around"
5) Losses signal frequently
i have all of the above
I have 0 GPS issues.

Google maps will not follow me.i have to move the screen to keep up.google navigation works fine..also co pilot works fine and it uses zero data so far im happy with the gps...on the captivate i have to start the gps test app. Before i can get a lock
the gps is very good but the setting can cause issues. i had some of the issues you mention, changed the sulp setting to auto config in lbs test mode and set it to msbased to match the secgps.conf file. i tried the google supl server but the gps was worse! the url is long for the server used in auto config so instead of writting it i just suggest you use the auto setting.
after that it works amazingly good, reception indoors is not as good as the nexus s or the atrix but the accuracy and lock times are nothing short of amazing.
also i never use wireless networks, it may try to fall back on it if you have a temporary reception issue and just cause major tracking issues. it is basically useless.
but that said if you always have the issues mentioned and not just occasionally then you may have a problem
Mine works great in maps.. didn't try tracking in Navagation but was playing with the voice on Google widget. Would say "navigate to dominos .Gonzales,la "and it would open Navagation but I can't here or get voice guided.
Does any one else get voice nav.

I went through the same crap as you did yesterday.
Used Copilot , all settings were default (not using wireless network , only using USE gps sattellites)
Took 15-20 minutes to grab a lock ... litterally had to park the car to the side and stick my hand out the window on a clear sunny day (total bull$hit) ... once I got a lock as I was driving on the highway it would occasionally show me driving waaaaaaaay off to the right than I actually was.
I hate admitting but I'm missing my iphone 3g , had instant lockon gps times

the galaxy s has different gps hardware or drivers but it can work adequately, this can work better, swap it out. if the second phone has issues i'll walk you through some better settings for it. i had a lot of experience with the captivate and know some things that mess with it. this however has agps (assisted gps) settings that work much better than the captivate and i recommend using them, after that you will not want to use a different device.

that would be the "use wireless networks" feature, dont use that. gps is never that far off.
turning that off will force gps and it may work better, if not you may need to change the supl settings to get the nmea data to download. agps will also help get the nmea data to download fast from the cell towers and not just from the satalites or wifi. having up to date nmea data makes all the difference.
isnt that used for when wifi is around? so even if im not on a wifi network it wouldn't work? so its like pointless to turn it off or on.?

just turn it off. it is completely useless. i have heard that it works off wifi, but it seems to do something anywhere i go, most people seem to believe that it is cell tower triangulation, either way the accuracy i get from it is as poor as 3600 meters and the center of the blue area is about 1 mile from my actual location. it serves no usefull purpose at all.
On or off still doesn't help

Is 2.3.5 any good?

Does it change battery life for the better?
Are data connections actually more reliable?
Any other real improvements??
I no longer have my Nexus, but I will buy another one in a second if the battery life is improved!
UPDATE:
Ok, so far it looks like people are indeed seeing improved signal and speeds.
What seems up in the air is the speaker volume (some are louder, some are not...)
Also unanswered as yet is how this update affects battery life. At least one person is saying his battery has gotten worse...
some say its better, im in mexico right now roaming on Movistar network...i updated, got 2.3.5 and everything seems the same....but probly wana listen out for someone in the usa. i wont be back tilll next sunday

Thanks. In terms of signal being better, is dBm better, or just the # of bars present? (they apparently jacked up the # of bars that show for a given signal strength, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 4...)

Every small cellphone speaker will distort when turned all the way up. It definitely gets much louder than before which is great for my morning alarm.
It is louder, it was not cracking on mine but the music I listen to doesn't have heavy bass. I should try listening to some club music to test it out lol

I wonder which developer is working on this version right now
I think it would be better getting opinions after a week. Tonight, for my area at least, there was a data outage. I called sprint on another issue and they knew about the data and said it was nationwide. I made the impatient mistake (again) of using the samsung flasher back to stock. Every time I do that, I have to call sprint and have them reset something with my phone and the towers. I get error 16's.
am i missing something.........how are people testing the speakerphone? that is the only thing I really wanted from this update (along with 3G updates since I don't get 4G), and I notice no difference WHATsoever.
were they referring to alarm sounds, music, phone calls....what? did anyone have to perform a hard reset to notice the difference? the sounds have no difference in volume to me, especially phone calls and music.
Wow, google effed this one up. I now have a constant connection to my airave, full bars all the time. Only problem is I cant recieve calls now, they go straight to voicemail. Sprint rep says its a technical issue with the update and it will be looked into. In the mean time I have to unplug my airave and roam at home :/
Yea, as long as signal bars are not green I can recieve a call, as soon as they turn green it goes straight to voicemail. Also, my phone does ring alot louder now.
I've seen really no difference from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5.

Why doesn't everyone quit whining like a gaggle of *****es and realize that the boot time is about 4 seconds total, steaming lag is gone in the browser and we have a improved radio? Looks good, but it would be nice if you could add extra apps to have access to in the interface. Of course, I doubt that will happen because it's designed to work with mirrorlink and follows some safety precautions.
Think I'll stick with Google CarHome.

I used it on my drive home yesterday afternoon and found that the weather wasn't working for me either. Seems that it is too dumb to recognize the location services enabled on the phone, or maybe it just doesn't like Verizon. Still, even with GPS enabled and locked it couldn't figure it out. I suppose that's why they haven't released a NA version yet. Hopefully they just release it and don't let the carriers get involved. Also, I don't have a car with Mirror link so I don't know if that's working or not.

I too have noticed the the weather as well as temp controls were not functional. I also came across some functionality issues with adding shortcuts within the app. While the overall look is nice it just feels incompatible with our Verizon SGS3's. \
After a little searching I found and side loaded the google Car Home app and am blown away by how smooth it is by comparison. Bonus for being transparent and showing my live wallpaper, it's the little things that matter sometimes. :good:

So I don't know if it is because I was still connected to WiFi in my driveway or because I've rebooted the phone once or twice since installing the Drive Link app, but this morning on my way to the airport Drive Link had both location and weather. Furthermore, where I had previously been seeing some weird data icon in the pseudo status bar (H+?), today I saw a normal 4G icon. I didn't notice it updating the location as I went (i.e. the weather stayed stuck at my departure location), but it's entirely possible that I didn't notice as a function of being tired. Regardless, it seems that this app actually works! Can someone try rebooting and/or enabling GPS outside while still connected to WiFi to confirm/narrow down what needs to happen to get this app working?

This is most likly because you were still connected to the wifi network and it downloaded the data once you got a lock. When I plug mine into the car it disables my 3G as it thinks I'm USB tethering to a PC because thats where the data for Mirroring travels through. That should be fixed with the US release.

I remember a fresh flash of Valhalla Black has all of the ringtones set to none. You have to go select the ringtone you want or it will be on a silent ringtone.
I doubt that is the problem since I have a custom ringdroid ringtone on currently. I but I will change it and see if I receive any missed calls... Let me try to explain it further though I don't receive some calls period. But I look on my friends phone and it shows that they did indeed call me... Could be network issue too... It's not a uncommon thing in the cell phone world. Text messages too?? How often does it happen? Can it be repeated and logged. If so, try posting a logcat in the Valhalla Black thread for help.
Yea I know it can be but recently its been doing it much more before it was roughly about once a week? Now it's daily =/ how do I would I log this? Catlog?

Try a new sim I think they're free if you're t mobile... that might help with the missed calls and stuff. About the other stuff that's just plain weird. Sounds like you have a bad battery and bad sd card and bad phone. Throw that thing away.

Yeah the sim cards are free. I do know that they updated Sim cards a while back when I updated phones. Before you throw away or donate to an xda member, lol. Try to wipe/reflash OR even a fix permissions for the lag. Gremlin remover is my favorite.
hello viper and other readers. im noobing and guessing this is for a sgs2. viper can you give me more on the text message splitter mine is the same.
but too my main issue if anybody could help my sgs2 has had difficulties since coming out of the box tethering in wifi mode. i can turn it on and get other devices to connect but after thirty seconds or so the tethering signal drops out and i loose my connection. i have to go back into gathering and portable wifi hotspots and retire the box again. if i stay in the tethering box i can watch the tick disappear and my devices will loose connection again. i am running a sgs2 i9100 xwlp7 and have rooted the phone which seemed to lengthen the tethering time to a maximum of two minutes but it perfect the drop out 100% of the time. any help here would be appreciated.

Well only reason I rooted was to try different roms since the stock rom on sgs4g is clunky and buggy and the custom roms by our great devs are must more stable... Usually.. Lol and they look better and some extra customization options. Also some enhances on performance and battery life!

Actually I believe your in the wrong forum you use a Samsung galaxy S 2 correct? If so your in the SGS4G forums and they are totally different and flashing one of these roms could potentially brick your phone if I'm not mistaken.

Negative ghost rider.
Not trying to be rude but wrong forum.
Don't want you to start reading into the threads and wind up it not working.
Some apps are compatible but roms are not.
You have been warned.
