has anyone got tango to work without lagging like crazy - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've been looking for a video chat app for my nexus s and apparently, only Tango supports the front facing camera right now. BOOO Google for not having a stock app for this. however, when i do make a video call to someone else, it's super laggy and clitchy, to the point that it's practically unusable. it keeps telling me that the network speed is too low, but i made a few calls on wifi with at least 7 mb download and 4 mb upload. this can't be the case. Does anyone else have this problem. is there another app that would work with nexus s. Fring has good video quality with no lag, but it doesn't support the front camera yet.

I was amazed at how well tango worked for me. On 3G no less. Though I'm in an hspa+ city so I benefit and get outrageous 3G data speeds.
But for me Tango works better than expected.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Edit: Just checked from my Nexus S to my Galaxy S (i9000)...both on 3G. Was pretty smooth, actually. Front camera wouldn't work on the SGS, though. Back camera fine.
Same here...WiFi to WiFi and so laggy/choppy it was unusable.
I have to test it on my SGS to see if the lag was from the NS, or from the app in general. I suspect NS issue, since Tango gets a lot of positive talk about it.
This is one area Apple really hit a home run on: iPhone 4 on jailbroken 3G connection and FaceTime to another friend was like he was in the room with me. Awesome.

Moved to Q&A

this just pisses me off. i dropped $580 on this phone cause it was supposed to be the most advanced, but nothing f'n works on it. no new market, no video calls, no 4g, useless nfc, and half the apps don't work cause its 2.3.1. i know it will be fixed as soon as devs get up to date, but still. i love the phone, but it's just a let down a little by google itself.

i just made a call on 3g to another nexus s, and it was still laggy. can anyone verify that they are having these issues. i don't know if it's just the nexus s, or some other reason.

Did you see my edit to my previous post where I said that a call from my Nexus S to my Galaxy S i9000 worked just fine? Both phones on 3G (one T-Mo, the other AT&T).

yes, thank you. i did see it, but i just wanted to know if others had it. it seems that you are the only one that i know that does not have issues. my two friends, both with nexus s, have same issues.

Yeah, you are the only one who's gotten it to not suck. I guess you are lucky. I can't wait for voodoo to finish their app.

Sorry you guys are having issues, but the app has an average of 4 star ratings and lots of "works great" posts, so I'm hardly the only one who has gotten it working.
Really frustrating for you, I am sure.
Voodoo video app? What's that. I just wish Google would give us video that works across platforms in the gtalk app.

Yeah I'm sure it works fine on OTHER phones, hence a good rating. Anyway oovoo looks good, its in market and has a desktop client too, and has announced upcoming support for ns!
Edit: I said voodoo in the last post which is a donut shop here in Portland. Sigh. Its oovoo I'm talking about.

You mean there are other phones besides the NS...? Wow, I had no idea. LOL.
Seriously, of course I was have a senior moment.

very very surprised of how smooth it was on a data network, then i put it to the test on my wireless n router...ooooo its just unbelivable how great it was

The short answer for me is no.
Tried Tango on my Nexus S and my Galaxy S on 3G and wifi.
It's lagging all the time.

Tango lags for me too with a buddy who is on his wifi. He reports that tango works well for him to others (he has a G2). I'm starting to wonder if it is a latency consistency thing on my NS as bandwidth speeds are strong on my internet wifi.
NS
Test: 10274 kbps down 1850 kbps up 20ms ping
Computer
Test: 12110 kbps down 1820 kbps up 14ms ping
ps when is skype launching video chat app for android as they have for iphone.. (jealous!)

If I don't video chat soon I'm going to vommit.

Pretty sure Qik worked fine for me.

Qik wouldn't recognize my FFC... THAT blows.
Edit: Verified again just to be sure; neither the Qik stand-alone app nor the T-Mobile Qik Video Chat app recognize the FFC on the NS. Regular Qik won't allow the changing of the chosen camera, and T-Mobile's Qik app allows you to change the selection to the FFC, but the on-screen feed never changes from the rear-facing camera. BUMMER.

Fring is such a half-assed app

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work. I'm talking about the skype video chat feature with a PC. So frustrated.
I tried it for the first time today and I have to agree. It wasn't showing friends on Google Talk that were online in the real app. And it wouldn't show anyone online in Skype. And on top of that, it wouldn't do calls between Gtalk clients or Skype either, it just kept dialing and disconnecting.
I uninstalled it, it's obviously junk.
I haven't have any problems with it yet (I've only used it a handful of times), I would not complain anyway.
It's a free app and it's being run on a phone released less than a month ago.
Time will help.

No offense to op. impo, i think its disrepectful to the devs working hard to make apps or this app in particular, to post a thread just to rag on their work, which is obviously intended to improve OUR user experience. Android is indeed open source and if i want better, i am more than welcome to write up something myself.....to improve the app a pm containing your problems in detail wouldve probably been a bit more considerate, and a proper way to handle this issue. Good luck with future app flamings

i think this thread is useless. fring works for me perfectly. video chat does go down but that is probably because of the fact that qik is so garbage and EVERYONE is trying to use fring all of a sudden. their servers were probably not ready for the massive onslaught of the EVO. I feel like i do have the right to bag on Qik because they are supported by Sprint and all their $$$ and their video quality is nowhere near as good as fring.

right on. unlike other free or lite programs, this one doesn't include ads and it works fine for me. i've no complaints, and even if i did, no loss, it's free. maybe you should get an iphone...oh scratch that. steve-o looked like he was frustrated when he called his boyfriend, ives. plus it only does iphone to iphone on wifi.

Agreed.. Qik has been a 100% letdown.. Sprint should remove their affiliation and offer better alternatives. The verification system for Qik is lame, the constant updates in the last week has been lame.. Overall a garbage experience.
fring is ok, aside from that i keep seeing MagnusRagnarok posting with those letters and size that suck, and i think his the only one who does it, and everytime i see those letters i skip his post i have seriously never read what he has to say, its disturbing.
Works quite well for me (Fring) and I use it all the time. Qik? Total POS. I've never been able to use is successfully, and even if it I did, I can only call other Evo's? GMAFB Sounds like Apple's FaceTime crap.
+100 Fring - combines all of my "chat" and video conference apps into one, and does it on my cell phone! I video conference with people on PC's all the time with Fring. Sure, the quality isn't HD or anything, but... do I have to say it again? I CAN DO IT - ON MY CELL PHONE! LOL
While I'm repeating myself... Qik can KMA. Sprint should put their development money into Fring... its a lot farther along, and those guys deserve a big break.
WTF is up with Fring ???? been having problems with it for like the last 30 minutes... cant log in.. tried changing password... even tried it from a pc and no dice

It works for me, pretty flawless too. Fring > Qik
I don't like how fring looks. I tried video calls on the EVO and there is so much white space, it makes it look cheap and ugly. I wish you could drag video windows around or make them full screen.
I just did an EvO to iPhone video with my friend and i had to keep the volume about half way, otherwise he sounds distorted on my end. Kind of sounds like my speaker is blown(its not) if i raise the volume passed the half way point. I could hear him clearly though. There were times where he said he couldn't hear me at all and he said he had his volume all the way up. I hope these are lil bugs that get fixed. Otherwise, it's pretty good

Amen to that. Qik is garbage. I can't see anyone putting that app over fring. More options and IMHO better interface.
i think fring removed skype due to verizon's contract with skype...i.e. no more video skype from fring!

Yahoo Messanger with video! Download from this thread now!!!

Ok guys, I know I have been pissed that iCrap got this first, well I downloaded the leaked MyTouch rom today for the sole purpose of grabing this...and it WORKS GREAT!!
I haven't got the video from Evo to Mac working yet(im sure i am missing something simple), but the Evo to Evo works great, better than Tango/Qik/Fring. It has video and audio at the same time(cough..Qik...cough) and works well over 3G(lowest confirmed functional 3G is -99db, of course 4G&WiFi work great) , wife and I have been playing calling each other from the next room
So if you wanted it and good 'ol Steve J. pissed you off here it is
Several people have asked about battery life and move to sd support,I can report moving to SD has had zero effect on performance, I personally have not seen an effect on battery,NO 100% AWAKE TIME(cough...Tango...cough) it has not showed up yet on "whats using the battery" in our settings->about phone->battery menu, I have made about 23 video calls now over the 2 days. Remember guys, this is a community and these are just my experiences, lets all share our experiences and help out.
Use a file explorer app, dropbox, or bluetooth folder to install to your handset and I would recommend updating your PC client to the latest version.
Oh, make sure you install both, just the add on for video and voice with the current version of messenger on the market WILL NOT WORK, and before anyone screams warez!! this IS free.
THE PEOPLE YOU ARE CALLING MUST ALSO HAVE A VIDEO OPTION ON THEIR END, you can not call your yahoo account on your phone to your account on the computer(if you are signed in on one you are signed off the other), reported issues with ATT yahoo accounts....

Confirmed video calls to:
iPhone 3Gs
iPhone 4
PC
PC virtual machines on Mac
Vibrant
Epic 4G
Evo 4G
No video calls to Mac OS X Yahoo Messenger yet, sorry!
So does this allow me to video chat with Yahoo from my Evo to someone's PC? That would be epic
That is the main reason I wanted it so bad, let me say first that I am using a MacBook Pro, I have not gotten the feature to work for me, but mac video apps are funny to set up, I am working on it, the reason the released it was to do both(phone to phone AND phone to computer) so it IS possible
Even so, just the better functionality of phone to phone is worth the download IMHO.
Trust me when Skype pulls their heads out of their collective ass's I will use that, but for now video Skype, as we all know, is verizon only :-(
Ok cool. Thanks for the heads up, and quick response. I installed it anyway, now I just wish I knew someone else with an Evo to test it out lol. Will be keeping my eye out for that Evo to PC news
Actually, I don't think Skype even has video on Verizon either. It was just an agreement to make the Skype voice program exclusive on Verizon phones. hxxp://phones.verizonwireless.com/skypemobile/
Awesome. Thanks. I tried it from Evo to PC and it works. I think it may have issues with the Mac. I will try that later to confirm the OP on the Mac.
Ok for the fun of it I tried Evo(yahoo) to PC(MSN messnger) and No Go.

Nope, that comes up when you touch the screen(instead of tapping the menu or back button), sorry, try calling some different people it has worked great so far I have made about 13 video calls

(q) video call

Anybody can help me how to make video call on my infuse?thx
Qik is only program I found that worked properly with infuse. It worked good doing a video call with an iPhone 4.
There is an app called Clearsea in the market that is free for now that works very well. We use it on IPads for video conferencing to our video conference system in the office. But I think it can also do device to device video calls as well. Just has to be a SIP or H323 compliant device for it to function properly.
when we get gingerbread we can use google talk to make video calls. skype was working on a video chat release for android and was waiting verizon to give the ok until microsoft bought it. i think we will now have to wait until skype is fully working on windows phone 7 for a few months before they even consider releasing it.
Try Tango. They just updated to work with the infuse 4g. Me personally I like tango better they use Push Notification unlike other that have a process running synchronizing every X time killing battery. With tango I could completely shut it down and still get notified.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
ill have to remove my foot from my mouth as it seems the first thing microsoft did with skpe was release video chat for android. its even been hacked to work with galaxy s and galaxy s2 phones with gingerbread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1148708 prolly would work on our phones too, and is yet another reason we need gingerbread!

yes. thats part of the point. seeing as everyone i know now has a phone with a front facing camera and a skype account, and iphones's facetime and android's google talk dont run on each others platforms, itd be really nice to have skype up and running now.

Video Calls work through Tango now

The Tango devs updated their the app and now video calls work. The audio issue has been fixed for the Droid Charge. Used it to make a call to an iphone friend and it worked flawlessly. Just thought I would spread the word.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I actually downloaded the tango app two days ago and uninstalled it and now i can't find it on the market.
Anyone else unable to find it? Has the icon changed?
Thanks,
Rick
I'll have to check this out.... it's funny, I bought a phone with a front-facing camera and never bothered using it, I guess I'll try this app out and see what the quality is like.
Few questions(dumb as they may be )
1: Can I call people who are on Skype with this app? I'm assuming I would have to wait for Skype to release a version for the Charge.
2: Does this app call other people with the app or does it just do a regular call..?
thanks :]
I tested it last night with the gf, pretty neat. It wouldn't connect at 3g (my area gets spotty between 3g/4g) but connected just fine over WiFi. From my experience, using a set of headphones is essentially mandatory for AT LEAST one party, if not both. With no headphones there was a significant amount of feedback on both ends, to the point where conversation was impossible. Perhaps this is just my experience though.
Finally, audio didnt work for the longest time
Sweet! Hopefully this will work between my charge and my wife's moto droid while she's out of town

1. No from what I have seen it looks as if the other party needs Tango as well. There is a contacts list from within and it automatically had some contacts in my list that already had Tango.
2. I think i answered #2 with #1.
Also I used it with speaker on and had no feedback . It was absolutely flawless that one time I used it. I was on 4G. It sucked battery hard though.

G2x Possibilites

I'm interested in getting a G2x... Looks like good hardware for a good price right now, but I had a few questions to see if it will fit my needs.
-I'm going to be using it wifi-only. I'm planning on installing CSipSimple to use as a VOIP phone. Anyone have experience doing this? On my Samsung moment CSipSimple has terrible issues routing audio and microphone.
-I would like to hook up my wiimote and plug the phone into my TV with HDMI for emulators... Has anyone had experience with doing this? Theoretically it looks like it should work flawless.
-I may in the future want to hook it up to voice/data. But on the cheap through a prepaid carrier like straight talk. You can get sims from straight talk, but will I have to unlock the phone? Is it even possible for this to work? Has anyone here done it before?
-Wifi only, what's the battery life like? Is a full day with moderate usage (screen-on 3 hours sporadic usage, wifi always on for voip calls) possible? Without cell connections I'd think it would last longer than normal.
-Any other issues with the phone that annoy people that might turn me off to the device?
Thanks!
i just ordered one of these, waiting for it to arrive at this very moment
i saw on the LG site a TON of bad reviews on this thing, a lot of them recent. things like the phone rebooting during a call, running hot, locking up to the point you have to remove the battery, bad battery life, and a few others.
but there were just as many good reviews too, best phone ever, no issues at all, etc. and some of those from people saying they have had their phone for over a few months, so i'm hoping mine will be fine
and i too am looking at what i can do with this device. i hope i will not be dissapointed
You came to the right place, the developers here have done a great job making this phone as stable as possible. They are, of course, limited by the LG code that they are working with, but the custom ROMs correct many issues. Of course, if you get a bad phone/bad hardware, not much can be done, but that's a risk with any phone.

Just flash custom ROMs, the hardware on this phone is amazing for such a cheap price, but LG can't code software for crap.
The stock ROM is guaranteed to give you rebooting, overheating, lock ups, bad battery life, etc...
But CM7 based ROMs (NOT CM9 BASED, CM9 IS NOT FINISHED) are all pretty rock solid stable. And even some of the 2.3.3 builds are good, Bionix Reloaded is the only 2.3.3 one that has been recently updated, but man Bionix is smooth as butter.
Have fun with your new powerhouse of a phone.

I can speak specifically to this one cuz I found out the hard way. You'll need to install a CyanogenMod7 based rom for this to work. Unless something has changed, the stock based ROMs don't have the necessary blue tooth profiles to connect a wiimote, sixaxis, etc. I was running Weapon G2x and my wiimote would not connect...so I switched to CM7 and it works.
With that said i love my phone and have little to no issues since I began running custom roms.

it's an app interface to http://www.google.com/voice
Google Voice is a (free!!) virtual phone service allowing you to make and receive calls/SMS for free from a web browser and forward these calls/SMS to any other phones you own.
GrooveIP is a VOIP app that connects to google voice via your cell phone's wifi connection, so you don't need to rely on a cell voice connection.
The Google Voice android app does the same thing for SMS.
Learn something new every day, thanks!

yeah thats some good info there, thanks for that! i was reading in my t-mobile start guide and it says that wifi calling MAY be metered just like cell phone minutes, i guess i'll have to call them to verify that. one of the reasons i got this was to make free wifi calls, but i will also check out this app!
You want to check out the Talkatone app instead of the Grove IP app.
