[APP] Eset Mobile Security Beta for Android - Android Apps and Games

Some nice features
http://www.eset.com/us/beta/mobile-security-for-android

Good news! I use ESET Smart Security on my computer and it's amazing, hopefully this app will be good aswell.

Great post, been waiting patiently for their release.

Thanks for sharing this info, ESET is high quality software and I'm looking forward to test-driving their Android debut

It does not install on Optimus One CM7.
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk

finally, they released it, been waiting for this app for a while now, eset has to be the most comprehensive protection solution for pc's, hope it will also do a great job protecting our Android smartphones

It's running seamlessly on my Desire HD
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium app.

it has included a call & sms/mms blocker option, no need to pay for another app to block your unwanted calls, works great on my SGS with very little cpu & battery usage...

Did you folks give it the administrator access it's asking for?
Also I'm interested to know how ESET plan to monetize this?

Yip. I gave it the rights it requested. Have since removed it. Nice app but not so sure I need it.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium app.

This is great news! will buy at release (if i have at that time)

Been running it a while now in BETA and have to say you barely know its there just like their PC software. Doesn't seem to affect resources at all. Has anyone seen any reviews on mobil security software testing?
Should also say I am running on a rooted Atrix with Gingerblur (thanks to Kennethpenn).

Yip, I agree. But my question is this: is this app really worth having running in the background? I mean, it's using system resources and adding to battery drain.. for what purpose?
I'm sorry but any app has to have a darn good reason to have a place on my phone..! And I don't see what this app adds - even though I think ESET's done a good job of the dev on this app.

Tried this then tested with a test virus for android, didn't even detect it or did anything about it, all this while scanning my arc.

ESET uses very little resources on your device.
A good reason to have it is because its best in its field and because more and more malware gets added to the Android market or off-market evry single day. Not only that but having a AV/AM on your mobile device is just or even more so of importance as your desktop.

Okay, thanks. Maybe I'll load it again. What about animboo's post about ESET not picking up the Android test virus..?

Is there any reason as to having antivirus software on a the phone. (Genuine Question). I am mindful of where I am getting my application/games, even through "other places". Are these sort of software necessary?

Definitely not a bad app but I don't completely agree with some of its permission requests. Have never used a security app on my phone before and have been fine so far.
Does anyone know the reason behind some of the most prying permissions?

Is there any reliable test to back this claim? I have my doubts.
And as for Desktops, ESET was very good and almost unknown for quite some time but recently hasn't really done a good job lately. (check av-comparatives)

Runs great on my device (HTC Dream/G1). I have not experienced any bug as of now.
Its so smooth and barely uses 1% of my cpu. Scans are very fast.
Thank you ESET.

Droid X audio enhancement .apk on Incredible?

Ok, so to make a long story short, I have an Incredible and an X.
When I was playing around with the X for a while, i found an audio enhancement setting that adds an equalizer to the phone for both music and phone handset speaker. (ie: super bass / super treble / rock / pop / vocal)
can we port this to the Droid Incredible?
when i loaded a task manager it listed the audio enhancement setting as a seperate .apk app, so does that make it that much easier to get it over to the Incredible?
Edit: Wow, i have no idea how a flamewar got started but, glad the mods took care of that.
I have attached the .apk from the Droid X and a screenshot of what its like on the X.

Mods,
I'm no Dev, but I know when something is dangerous. This guy needs to be bannned, or at least prevented from posting.
No flame, my concern is that he's going to go into the business of brick mass production.
Thread reported. He hasn't done anything YET, but I'm really concerned about him posting roms.
mix zing has a equalizer not sure how good it is and im sure its just for their player but it may help some people. I'm not able to help any other way.
Wow, that was some massive cleaning... 26 posts of pure flames...
Get back on topic and please let go of this romflash issue already... this is getting really old (second thread I had to clean up today already).

I respect that you're a mod, and that you've cleaned up the thread, but why erase my last post that had useful info and leave most of his posts up?
To paraphrase what I was saying earlier:
Romflash's app didn't work, because android does not contain any EQ api's. If there's an EQ on the Droid X, it's because MOTO built it into Ninja Blur. (like our HTC widgets do not work w/o Sense's frameworks). A dev would have to look to see if the necessary lib's can be taken out of Blur for this app to work.

Whoa! Just read through that thread. That looks like a mess. I'm just putting it out there... but it would make sense that the app works by throttling the CPU? Which in the case of our Incredible... Would not work at all (thus no errors). Makes sense why it would cause so many errors on the Droid though... since both the Droid and X use the same CPU but different generations. Gut feeling says to stay away from that app..... (sorry for going off topic).
Edit... I'm curious to know if it asked for 'su' perms?

I've heard they were going to put out this magazine before, and to me, its pretty much a joke of a magazine.
Let me give you an excerpt from the first page which made me laugh:
"In a world full of roadblocks, rules and lame limitations, Droid has none. It empowers you to do life on your terms, in your own time."
I'm sure you are all laughing right now.
Lets see, Droid has no limitations..... I'm assuming they aren't including forced bloatware and forced custom UI's? Right....
"It empowers you to do life on your terms..."
Obviously except for not being able to remove apps you don't want on your phone, or to choose to have a pure Android experience without Motoblurcrap or Sense or any other (I don't really mind Sense, but it's the principle!)
Other than that, the magazine is just trying to sell you accessories and phones. [/QUOTE]
The only reason it was mailed out.
Doc
It was a complete joke and nothing at all like what they were trying to promote before it came out. Marketing bull.
Truly scary would be a magazine titled "BlackBerry!" Can you imagine the sorry crap an issue of that would contain?!
Magazines still exist? Damn.

Iris for Android ( sort of Siri ) is here

From Techcrunch:
Siri for android is here
While voice control has been part of Android since the dawn of time, Siri came along and ruined the fun with its superior search and understanding capabilities. However, an industrious team of folks from Dexetra.com, led by Narayan Babu, built a Siri-alike in just 8 hours during a hackathon.
Iris allows you to search on various subjects including conversions, art, literature, history, and biology. You can ask it “What is a fish?” and it will reply with a paragraph from Wikipedia focusing on our finned friends.
The app will soon be available soon from the Android Marketplace but I tried it recently and found it a bit sparse but quite cool. It uses Android’s speech-to-text functions to understand basic questions and Narayan and his buddies are improving the app all the time.
The coolest thing? The finished the app in eight hours.
When we started seeing results, everyone got excited and started a high speed coding race. In no time, we added Voice input, Text-to-speech, also a lot of hueristic humor into Iris. Not until late evening we decided on the name “iris.”, which would be Siri in reverse. And we also reverse engineered a crazy expansion – Intelligent Rival Imitator of Siri. We were still in the fun mode, but when we started using it the results were actually good, really good.

Outstanding work in 8 hours. I think it's not a market releasable version right now... polish it, add more skills to Iris.
Keep up the good work and +1 for the name.
I just notice its in the market now. Pretty good for 8 hours of work. I wonder what they can do with more time?

Gratz!! Awesome job
I downloaded it and, while I haven't had a chance to play with it much (I work at an ATT authorized retailer), I did like what I saw and have been telling my Android customers about it all day
So I ask: "what is 2+2"
Iris responds: "Conan O'Brien, he is very white"
Then I ask: "what is 2x2"
Iris responds: "Harry Potter"
Seems to work perfect to me.
I used this today and it sucked.

I tried asking the questions shown in the screenshot of the OP, i got nothing remotely like that lol. Any question i asked ended up "i'm too tired to respond now, try asking me again later"
At the least, it is entertaining. Perhaps not as useful as SIRI in giving accurate answers. But my family is having a blast asking and frequently laughing at the responses. That, is priceless. Thanks!

Best Battery Saver App Ever!!

Ok so i have tried many battery saver apps and have come to the conclusion that most of them are a joke. Until i tried BatteryXL. With a bit of setup this app has give me over 20 hours of life with use. I am talking about web surfing, texting, gaming, calls and some picture taking. I use my phone a lot and it just would not make it half the day. I even tried an extended battery. But even that sucked. Juice defender isn't bad if you buy the pro version, but BatteryXL is free. There have been a few glitches , as it is still in beta, but they are very minor and didn't effect its usage. So if anyone is looking for an app to help with battery life try it and see how it works for you. I am no way affiliated with the creators of this app. I am just a big fan of it and i know how many evo user complain about battery life. Also if you want to know i am using Sinister rom version 7 and anthrax kernel 009. The rom and kernel you use will affect how much this app helps.
Again i have no affiliation with the make of this app so don't ask me if you have issues. Submit then to the maker.
EDIT: If you don't have an intelligent thing to say, then do the world a favor and keep your mouth shut. The air is polluted enough as it is
Guys, please do not make me close this thread. Stay on its original purpose instead of attacking each other.
Consider this a warning. There is no point on either use so much exclamations marks, replying in such way to it and then attacking back in the same way.....
I am telling you the nicest way, stay on topic.
YOU ARE WARNED!
Thank you D.O.C. I just wanted to inform others about this app because i know battery issue is a big problem for most of us Evo users. And i am sorry for the off topic spat
BatteryXL has saved my battery.. i've been under 50% for over 4 hours already and still have 39%..
thanks for sharing...
Interesting
I switched over to an ICS rom and it still is getting me around 15 hrs or so. I love this app.

Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Yea I've tried using this app but it just doesn't work like juice defender... this app doesn't auto sync 3rd party email apps or twitcaster... juice defender makes it possible to sync specific apps during a specific time frame to resync information while the screen is off.. I haven't seen this app (battery XL) do that at all...

Yeah, I'm a bit leery of it myself, after reading all sorts of comments about people having issues getting various radios to come back on. Would like to see more feedback about it, though.

Only issue I have had is every now and then it won't turn my mobile data back on. I will take that since I can get almost 20 hours of use every day. I will post a screen shot of it later today to prove it.
Yeah, I enjoyed this app until I too had problems with it randomly turning off my data, other than that it is great at saving battery life.

What does this app do exactly..? In what ways does it save battery... does it lower cpu usage or does it disconnect wireless connections when not in use or what..?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Like most battery savers out there it controls connections and other features. But unlike most others this one actually does help get you more battery life. Before using this app i would only get about 12 hours total before I needed to charge. Now as you can see from above I get about double that.
@OP.
prior to using this app, were you one of those (like me) who always turn off unnecessary radios and services manually? Cuz I've always done that, and if this app makes an effect beyond that, I might be interested.
But I prefer to do it manually, myself (not to mention, due to OCD, I would always turn off radios manually). Are you not in that camp?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
No. I can't say I am. I never remember to turn them off so this app is great for me. It does have some other cool stuff. Check it out is all I can say. It is free. So if you don't like it you aren't out anything.
Simply put, the app sucks. Sucks bad. The concept is good, but the app, it sucks

°°PROTEST°° NFL app won't run on rooted phones

As per the subject heading, the NFL's official app chose to not allow access to users with rooted devices.
It seems more and more app makers (from larger companies) are making this decision, and, obviously, it's lame... and of course they have the right to do this (so please don't argue that point) but it goes against the concept of Android's openness.
So, even if you have no interest in the NFL, I encourage all of you to download the app from the play store and review it at 1 STAR as a sign of protest. I've seen the app's rating go from 4.7 to 4.0 in the last couple days due to all the rooted users protesting the NFL's choice to do this.
Cheers
