Not loading recovery boot or kernel. - General Questions and Answers

I am somewhat new to this, I've been rooted for a while but finally got tired of the stock annoying stuff. I downloaded rom manager and kernel manager. I wanted to see if it worked so I flashed my kernel, it says its installed but it doesn't do a thing and when I do a reboot the menu still notes the original kernel. Wth!!!! And when I tried to do the cm7 rom it gets to the point where it tells me to restart recovery and it freezes on the HTC startup screen. I have to remove the battery to reboot it normally. Why is it doing this??? I have a stock rooted HTC EVO shift 4G. I do not have nand unlocked.

I'm no expert here, but I believe this has something to do with not having a custom recovery. Have a look in the EVO section for threads relating to amon-ra and ClockWorkMod (CWM). Hopefully this will help you around the recovery issue and allow you to flash your kernel.
Good luck!

just a thought mate.... you do know that you need to do a full wipe before installing CM7 & also make sure your using "Clockwork 3*** with CM7" & "not Clockwork 2*** with CM7" or you will get a bootloop!
Hope this helps

[Q] CM7 used to work, now bootloops

Just wondering if anyone here might have an idea what's going on...
I was previously running CM7 RC1 but a few things have been a bit strange so I decided to go back to my pre-CM7 nandroid and wipe my phone.
Now, when I flash CM7 I get bootloops. Anyone have any idea what might have happened?
Thanks!
Fixed?
Not sure which of these did it, but...
Installed busybox
Installed rom manger
Installed CM7 via rom manager and picked a different zip file
Seemed to work. CM7 is up and running again (#38 because that's the file I had).
Another question though... whenever I try to reboot into recovery, I get the Android logo with the !. I have to pull the battery and fastboot from my computer. Does anyone know why? I renamed the install-recovery.sh and Rom Manager says I have CWM 3.0.0.5 installed.

Didn't seem to work for me. Thanks though.
Try wiping EVERYTHING and even formatting the "sdcard" partition on the phone. Then flash everything again and flash a custom kernel. Should work.

[Q] ANOTHER problem

hey dudes, i have another problem with root. i wanted to flash CM7 to it and i used rom manager to download it and flash, but it is stuck at loading screen with the cute little blue android dude on the skateboard. i cannot go into rocovery because i used the one click to root and it only wants to update the rom thingy. it updates, and i can use the phone, only without CM7. so basically what i want is for the bootloader to stop overwriting my rom and i want to install CM7
OK: edit. i just made it overwrite my system and i ran regular rom. but alas, another problem. i tried to install CM7, and i put this kernal on it and now i am stuck on endless rebooting AHHHHH. ok now i am just updating the pd98 thingy again to get my phone back but it probably will do endless reboot again if i try to flash the kernal again. any ideas?
EDIT AGAIN: ok flashed kernal and rom at same time and stuck at booter again with the cute dude but i dont want to re-flash the pd968 thingy. should I? or should i wait
EDIT: i can go into clockworkmod but not recovery mode
EDIT: fixed it. forgot to factory reset. i am now running CM7 on android 2.3.1
Moved to general as not android development

well give this a shot since you cant go into recovery. put the rom that you know works on the root of your sd card and rename it to pc36img and try to flash it that way. I hope it works.

PC36IMG is for the HTC EVO. The HTC Inspire is a PD98, so that is what the bootloader is going to look for on the SD card.
Lol sorry I was messing with my evo eariler I guess the number got stuck in my head.

Recovery Issues?

So i have rooted my phone using Bubby's one click. have cwm 3.x.x.x installed whatever the latest is and also have Cm7 rc2 running. I am trying to get into recovery to flash a different GB rom but everytime i try from Hboot AND rom manager, it just gets stuck at a black screen and nothing happens. does anyone else have this problem? if so, how can i fix it!
Also, I should state that I am using whatever radio was pushed to my phone during the rooting process. Also stock kernel.
Check the faq's in buddy's thread.

[Q] htc my touch 4g flashing rom

so i tried to flash iced glacier and wiped out all the data and cache and what not. but when i tried to turn it on it didnt work. so i went back to recovery and tried to restore to my back up it gets stuck on the startup screen how can i get it back to stock rom or any rom to get the phoen running again? im using clockworkmod recovery v3.0.0.5 thanks get back i need help im new to this.
Ok, don't panic, easy fix to this. Clockwork version 3.0.0.5 is only compatible when flashing gingerbread rom's (CM7, RoyalGinger, etc.), not froyo (Iced Glacier, Stock, etc.). So what you are going to need to do is put CM7 since you can only flash a gingerbread rom on your sd card and flash that. Give it a test drive, you might like it. If you still want to go to Iced Glacier, you need to flash clockwork mod 3.0.0.6 which will enable you to flash between froyo and gingerbread freely. This is available in the MT4G android development forum on this site, it is not available through rom manager, but there is a nice little walk through that makes it simple. And like I said, don't panic, your phone is 100% fine.

Rooted i9023, some help needed please!

Ok guys so I have managed to root my i9023 and flash clockwork recovery which was all good, I set about flashing some new roms via rom manager, again, all good.
So now I settle on this cm7 based rom which I love, used anim mod to get some nice transitions, then I used font changer.
All was good, then I decided that the font I was using was a bit ott so I decided to change it again, upon reboot it starts boot looping, bollocks !!!
So I try to get into clockwork recovery, and it seems to have gone back to the stock bootloader, grrrrr
I re flash clockwork, wipe / clear etc... then flash the rom again, but it would not flash, so I went to my backup of stock n flashed that, all good.
I then install rom manager again and flash the rom I liked again, this time no problem, but when it loads up the home button and search button are not working
So i decide on a factory reset, I select wipe everything including sd just to be sure but it comes up "error null"???
So now I wipe the sd manually and then do the reset and it works, ok, I re load everything on from scratch and all is good, but when I installed rom manager it says that clockwork recovery IS NOT installed again
Can anyone here work out from my ramblings WTF is going on???
I dont get why the font changer all of a sudden caused a boot loop, as I had changed font about 15 times with it without issue, also why clockwork recovery will not stick anymore after a reboot, when before it did and I have not changed a thing!
Cheers!!!
Rename install-recovery.sh in system/etc to something else, flash cwm recovery again, this time it'll stick until you install a stock rom again.
Rom manager is causing more problems than it's saving time, hence I don't use it.

Thanks for the reply, can you go into detail on what exactly I need to do to get clockwork to stick? I still hold noob status!
Thanks!
Also rom manager seems fine, I flashed loads of roms with it with no issue, I also rebooted a few time at least between flashes so I dont get why clockwork suddenly decided to jump ship.
It was the font changer that f&%ked it all up for me, or anim mod (which I wont touch now even tho I miss the wicked transitions).
When using Font Changer, it's better to do a reboot manually instead of selecting Reboot from within the program. That sometimes cause me a boot loop too. But after turning the phone off / on a.k.a. "reboot manually", the phone boots fine.
To elaborate what rentaric said, use Root Explorer and go to /system/etc/, there should be a file named install-recovery.sh. This file is responsible for flashing the stock recovery every time the phone boots. If you rename it to something else e.g. install-recovery.sh.bak then CWM will stick on reboot.
Thanks, but when I get into the /system/etc/ there is not file called install-recovery.sh.
The only .sh in there is init.goldfish.sh
Any ideas???
bump...............
Flash cwm rec and either stock or custom rom.
Stock rom incl the .sh you want.

I've read on these forums that using Clockwork on the I9023 is a no-go. Serves up incompatible ROMs, etc.
BTW, I'm looking to root my I9023. Can the OP please point me to the method he used.

Yeah I have a custom rom installed, supercm7, but the install-recovery.sh. that I have been told is causing the problem of clockwork disappearing is not in the /system/etc/ folder, so I am asking if there is anything else that could be causing me to have to re flash clockwork via my pc every time I want to change rom?
I will tell you exactly what happens.
1. I go into rom manager
2. download a rom and choose flash rom from sd card
3. it asked if I want to wipe etc, i select yes
4. phone re boots and I get ! with an android
5. I pull the battery, hold volume up n power and boot / connect to my pc
6. re flash clockwork via SDK
7.the phone then load the new rom on its own
Before it would just flash the rom without me having to install clockwork again.
install-recovery.sh is only there if you're using a stock android rom.
"so I am asking if there is anything else that could be causing me to have to re flash clockwork via my pc every time I want to change rom?"
ROM Manager.
It's not a reliable working tool for ME as I'm changing ROMs/kernels on a regular basis and it might not work reliable the one time you need it.
Thanks for that, I may just sack rom manager then.
Its a shame as I flashed several roms with it without issue.
Oh well, loving this supercm7 so gonna stick with it untill an update comes out.
Many thanks to all who have replied, clicking the thanks buttons now!
I had the same problem but i installed a previus recovery and works fine formeforme
