Recovery Issues? - HTC Inspire 4G

So i have rooted my phone using Bubby's one click. have cwm 3.x.x.x installed whatever the latest is and also have Cm7 rc2 running. I am trying to get into recovery to flash a different GB rom but everytime i try from Hboot AND rom manager, it just gets stuck at a black screen and nothing happens. does anyone else have this problem? if so, how can i fix it!
Also, I should state that I am using whatever radio was pushed to my phone during the rooting process. Also stock kernel.

Check the faq's in buddy's thread.

[Q] any alternatives to the ROMmanager method?

i tried flashing a CM rom with ROMmanager. but that program isn't working on my phone for some reason. every time i try to reboot the phone into the clockworkmod recovery screen, it just takes me to the phones normal recovery screen. i'm a bit of a noob because i've never done this before, so if anyone could give me an alternative to flashing a custom rom or just help me fix ROMmanager, that would be awesome. (i also planned on installing an overclocking kernel, so i don't know if other methods would have any effect on me being able to do that or not.)
try flashing with rsd lite 4.9

While you are still on stock rom, the stock recovery will keep coming back on every reboot. Try flashing clockworkmod recovery from within Rom Manager, let the phone reboot and then flash it again. You should be able to flash a Custom Rom now.
This is how it worked for me.

well thats the problem. i flashed the clockworkmod recovery screen, but it's still taking me to the phones normal recovery screen.
Try flashing an alternate recovery then flash clockwork again. I had a similiar problem and this helped me.

had it for 5 hours and already bricked

i just got my inspire a couple hours ago and i was trying to flash a CM kernel using kernel manager and it froze right after it finished and was completely unresponsive so i did a battery pull and now it's stuck on the white htc screen
please help
Power up with vol down....orange light comes on power up wit vol up sends me to CM.
i did that and tried to reboot from there and it still didnt work but right now im trying to update from the p???????? left by the simple root method
search before you post please. Please take a look at the guide that is stickied, there is a guide and even a video..
this isn't about flashing anything it's about something with a kernel that i messed up but it's working now
hmmm interesting enough, though you are wrong! How exactaly do you think you get the kernel on the phone?
And since I wrote the guide and made the video, I assure you it is on there.
actually i used kernel manager to do this so i did it on my own buy i do like your guide and i'm sorry for any problems
It uses the same process as rom manager and, flashes the kernel via cwm. What causes the soft brick is an incorrect flash . Its the same process for any incorrect flash whether it is a rom or kernel.
Just be sure to try everything. I'm sure you'll find a solution.
When you use the simple root, in order to flash a custom rom you have to root then go back to the downgraded version without sound and flash a rom from there. So now to fix it just flash stock rom and start over but when u get to the downgraded version just flash instead
If you're trying to flash an Android 2.3 rom, you have to have CWM 3.0+, and if you're trying to flash an Android 2.2 rom, you have to have one of the 2.5 versions.
I had the same problem as I was trying to flash the wrong file (an Android 2.2 rom) as I had updated CWM to 3.0.0.6 at the time. I finally realized I was choosing the wrong file the entire time, and then I was able to flash the Android 2.3 rom with no problems.

Not loading recovery boot or kernel.

I am somewhat new to this, I've been rooted for a while but finally got tired of the stock annoying stuff. I downloaded rom manager and kernel manager. I wanted to see if it worked so I flashed my kernel, it says its installed but it doesn't do a thing and when I do a reboot the menu still notes the original kernel. Wth!!!! And when I tried to do the cm7 rom it gets to the point where it tells me to restart recovery and it freezes on the HTC startup screen. I have to remove the battery to reboot it normally. Why is it doing this??? I have a stock rooted HTC EVO shift 4G. I do not have nand unlocked.

I'm no expert here, but I believe this has something to do with not having a custom recovery. Have a look in the EVO section for threads relating to amon-ra and ClockWorkMod (CWM). Hopefully this will help you around the recovery issue and allow you to flash your kernel.
Good luck!
just a thought mate.... you do know that you need to do a full wipe before installing CM7 & also make sure your using "Clockwork 3*** with CM7" & "not Clockwork 2*** with CM7" or you will get a bootloop!
Hope this helps

[Q] CM7 / ICS Flashing issues

I soft bricked my phone playing with ICS, I got a JIG and solved the problem
I can now ODIN back to any version and once rooted I can install any samsung based rom, the problem comes when I try to flash aosp both CM7 and any ICS beta
What happens is I select the zip, it runs a script and the phone reboots, I see the AT&T logo and then it mounts the sd card, it says it can't find the zip file.
I've tried Froyo, Eclair, even gingerbread (I know your not supposed to flash cm7 from gingerbread, I'm just running outta ideas) I have froyo bootloaders, I reinstalled them with heimdal. I've also done a master clear and erased the internal sd card
Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?
Are you trying to install the zip from ClockworkMod?
Most likely, the rom is incompatible with the flash method you are choosing which bricks your phone. I had this happen to me twice from either flashing a rom the wrong way or just trying to flash the wrong rom all together and killing my system, but I ended up telling AT&T Techs that it happened when I tried upgrading to 2.2 to avoid warranty issues and they replaced my whole device with a refurbished unit =]
However keep in mind that they cannot jig your device and you will have to do that yourself to get your data off your device before you try getting a new one via this method.
Possible Solution:
1. If you can, flash cm7 to your device
2. Flash This ICS rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
If you have already tried this then I apologize, but I hope this helps.
Another problem
Ok, everything I see says I should flash from a captivatemtd recovery, but when I install Rom manager and select captivatemtd, it says their are no offical recoveries for it, I'm currently running cognition froyo 2.2 with froyo bootloaders
Does anyone know where I can manually get the captivatemtd CWM? and how do I install it?

I'll go over my method of installing(I've had ZERO issues flashing from/to any ROM)
1. I FTS/MC using Odin 1 Click. My phone build is 1008
2. Root with 1 click root(I have to do steps 2 and 3 because I do not have 3 button recovery)
3. Sideload and install ROM Manager(Rom manager, and CWM update.zip are in the Sideload zip that's attached)
4. Copy CWM Update.zip and ROM to device. Reboot and install CWM
5. Reboot into recovery and install ROM
Odin 1 Click(If you can use it)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Odin I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip
Root 1 Click
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Root.zip
Sideload Wonder Machine and ROM Manager
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Sideloading.zip
Edit** What is the build number of your phone?
Here's what you need
Just download this rom
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/cm_captivatemtd_full-181.zip
And then watch this video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBPu-GqM9RE
Flash CM7 using odin
then flash ICS using clockwork mod using the instructions I gave you before.
That's the easiest way I found to do it and that's how I went from stock rom to CM7 rom and then finally to ICS

Tried this to the letter still doesn't work, could it be because of rom manager not finding a recovery for captivatemtd, some pages say I need that recovery but it isn't available in rom manager.
Finnally
Finnally got CM7 installed the problem was I had to do the three button boot into recovery twice, the first time updates clockworkmod to version 5.x
Now to try ICS again, wish me luck
Thanks
Thanks for all the suggestions, the tip in the video about flashing the speedmod kernel did help I think, I've successfully flashed
teamhacksung's ICS Port for Captivate (BUILD 9) again.
A couple notes here:
1 when your flashing cm7 from cwm( NOT 3e RECOVERY THOUGH) you need to flash the. Zip file, then reboot system, IT WILL PROBABLY BOOT LOOP, three button back to recovery and flash again, then while in recovery still flash gapps. Reboot and it will install fine. You should ONLY need to do the two time flash the first time going to cm7.
2. When you go to rom manager and choose manual flash overide from hitting the menu button you will get the unsupported recovery, DON'T WORRY about it and hit ok. Then another popup will come up and choose 3.x and it will work.

[Q] Recovery boot loop

I brought my phone to stock. Installed a rom. Fine. Went back into CWM recovery. Every time I reboot the phone (power button or in recovery) it returns to recovery.
I brought my phone back to stock again. Installed another rom. Went back to TWRP. Again, I can't reboot the system, only return to recovery.
Is there a way to fix this, or can I never use recovery after installing a rom?
{I'm sure this question has probably been asked before, but I've been searching for hours and can't find a fix.)
Did you wipe data & caches? What did you flash and how? Cwm, heimdall or Odin? Sgh-t959v under battery?
Find lumin30's guides. They/he will steer you straight.

This would occur for me when I had installed an incompatiable kernel with the ROM I am trying to install. I would fix this problem by either looking at the thread for a compatiable kernel if it does not come with one, or if it is an ICS ROM, Team Acid's ICS Kernel works fine. I think Team Acid's ICS kernel is included in their unofficial AOKP release if you have that downloaded. I hoped this help!

All of our ROM's have kernels. It is the kernel you flash from that makes a difference. And once you flash the ROM, the kernel that is packaged with the ROM replaces the kernel you previously had/flashed from. However, the OP of the ROM's usually specify what you need to do to flash the ROM.

Ah I see. But my point was that some ROMs state that the user must be on an ICS ROM/Kernel to flash this. I guess I wasn't very clear as I am new here and lack understanding.

I used Odin to return to stock. I used Super One Click to root. I used root explorer modify the recovery to allow me to boot into "CWM final for Froyo". That much each and every time.
The first time I installed
[TFQ - 30/12/2012]X.A.O.K[Kanged - Xperia Style]
That is an ICS rom. Installed fine with a new CWM.
The second time I installed the same.
The third time I installed
ROM-MTD-TWRP-ICS-4.x-Audiophile
That is another ICS rom. Installed fine with TWRP.
Each and every time, when returning to recovery to flash more, I got stuck. I can't boot to anything except recovery.
My brother suggested that the problem is using the Volume up and down and power button ("three finger salute") to return to recovery instead of from OS power down menu.
For a fourth time I started over again. Now, using the reboot>recovery, everything works fine.
One thing, you need to have ginger bread bootloaders. So, when you say Odin back to stock, are you referring to kj6?
You could cut down some of the work by using Odin to flash a kernel with recovery & root in it. Antonx & drhonk both have kernels that will do that with odin.
I flash bhundven's cm9 Rom before jumping to any of the others(and wipe between). I believe some of the Rom authors have that in their instructions.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
Yeah... GB bootloaders, not Froyo. Your return to stock should be a return to GB stock, not Froyo... and your return to stock can be a return to a rooted stock. If you want to make your life less painful.
It's about MTD to BML, not really about the base version. You just don't want to wipe out what allows later stuff to actually work properly...
Thanks for the advice. I haven't used custom roms very much. Trying to figure out which ones to choose was difficult. I started on stock Gingerbread, but everything I encountered in searching indicated that I needed to go back to Froyo to get CWM then go from there. ...Perhaps I kept running into very old instructions? In any case, should I need to go back to stock again some day, I'll try to figure out which GB roms I could use, including root and custom recovery.
I guess the solution to my problem is: 1) flash back to Froyo or Gingerbread; 2) after flashing an ICS+ rom, only go to recovery from OS reboot menu (never "three finger salute").
I'm actually surprised that people don't run into this problem more often, enough to create a sticky about it. I'm sure I'd still be pulling my hair out if my brother hadn't run into the problem on his Fascinate a year ago.
On mine, the 3 finger boot to recovery works fine. Then again, I haven't been on Froyo since Samsung and TMo said to stop using Froyo back in November (October?) 2011 with the official 2.3.6 update. And the only boot-loops I have, whether recovery is booted through the menu or salute, are when I flash something invalid.

Interesting... Perhaps if I went back to a gingerbread stock then upgraded to ICS the problem wouldn't occur?
I'll have to try that the next time I might need to return to stock.
Hello,
First I just want to say thank you to the mods for running a great forum and to the devs for keeping this device current.
I just struggled over a period of days with this issue.
The end result being, that you need to go to CM9 BEFORE you try JellyBean or later!
Just hope this helps someone else who missed that instruction.
Thanks devs/mods/everyone for keeping this device alive!!!! :good::good::good:
*EDIT* correction... i THINK you need to go CM9 Before trying something else
Not all ICS ROMs require CM9, but you must have at least CWM5 recovery to be able to flash CM9 or these ROMs. Follow ROMs' OP instructions.
I personally tested HebMIUI flash over Stock GB with CWM5 (Basic with a twist kernel) without going through CM9.
