[Q] need help with nvflash.. please - T-Mobile LG G2x

I am trying to install nvflash on my g2x but I am not really understanding the directions and i am getting conflicting answers. first I am confused about the battery. Does it stay out while the phone is plugged into the usb or does it go back in first. I pretty much understand installing the driver but once I get to the testing part of these http://android.modaco.com/content/l...nstructions-drivers-links-active/instructions, Im lost. Can someone please give me a little more detailed instruction. Thanks

You put the battery back in. It's possible it would work without, but putting it back in definitely works.
It's an odd process since the phone never reacts at all until you actually load the new bootloader.

after i install the driver do I just go into the folder where I extracted the nvflash zip flie and click on the application inside then just type in nvflash --sync ???

Nope, this is done from a command prompt.

The test is:
nvflash --sync
The actual flash is:
nvflash --bct E1108_Hynix_512MB_H8TBR00U0MLR-0DM_300MHz_final_emmc_x8.bct --bl fastboot.bin --download 5 recovery-star-test2.img
Make sure you have the images all copied to the same directory as nvflash. Also, if you don't type it in exactly right, it will just hang and never do anything.

inside the nvflash folder there is an application named nvflash and if i try to click on it a command box pops up for a half second than goes away.

You don't sound too familiar with the command prompt, I'm not sure you want to go down this road since Rom Manager will flash recovery for you easily. In any case, there are posts in the nvflash thread in the Developer section that explain what to do exactly. Long story short is you open a command prompt window and navigate to the folder that contains the nvflash program. Then you type the command you want.

You have to open the command prompt manually either by going to your start menu then navigating to the directory with nvflash or holding shift and right clicking inside the windows folder with nvflash.

nvflash isn't something you install on your phone, it a windows and linux program that lets you flash images to your phone (such as custom recovery images like ClockworkMod recovery).

NVFlash method is much better (for now at least). The Rom Manager method doesn't seem to offer a way to hardware boot into recovery, at least not while in bootloop

I'm kind of at a loss how to explain it more. Here's the process:
1. Click on your Start Menu.
2. Click to open Command Prompt
3. Navigate to the directory with NVFlash in it from within Command Prompt
3a. Type "cd directoryname" (replacing directoryname with the actual directory name) to move up a directory (like from c: to c:\apps you type "cd apps").
3b. To move down a directory type "cd.."
4. Type "nvflash --sync" to test your connection.
5 Type "nvflash --bct E1108_Hynix_512MB_H8TBR00U0MLR-0DM_300MHz_final_emmc_x8.bct --bl fastboot.bin --download 5 recovery-star-test2.img" to flash.

unplug your phone from the usb. leave the other end plugged in to the pc.
TAKE OUT THE BATTERY! hold down both volume buttons while plugging in the usb. you should hear the windows device connected sound. let go of the volume buttons.
you open the command window like i stated. copy and paste this into the command window nvflash.exe --bct E1108_Hynix_512MB_H8TBR00U0MLR-0DM_300MHz_final_emmc_x8.bct --bl fastboot.bin --download 5 recovery-star-test2.img make sure there are no spaces between emmc and _x8.bct. copying and pasting has done this to me.
now press enter on your keyboard. you should get a software update screen on your phone. unplug the usb. put the battery back in. press volume down and power AND HOLD BOTH FOR AT LEAST 10-15 SECONDS. you should now be in custom recovery.

[GUIDE]NVFlash Procedure to Load ClockWorkMod (CWM)

Following is the NVFlash procedure for installing ClockWorkMod (CWM) for those
people who are having boot loop problems (or other problems) and need
to install CWM by flashing rather than by using /sdcard or a microSD card
via /SDCARD2. No apologies -- this is written so even the new folks can use it.!
1. You need to get a copy of ClockWorkMod v.8, which can best be done
by downloading through the following thread. Also, you might check the
thread for related info -- it's a good one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010943
2. Once you have the CWM files, go to your NVFlash directory (or whatever
you call it) and make sure you have the right files in it.
-- Nvflash.exe and related files (nvflash_gtablet_2010110500.zip) from
the original NVFlash Recovery thread.
-- USB drivers (also from NVFlash Recovery thread. If you already are
flashing via APX you should have them installed.)
-- The file "nvflash_gtablet.bat" from the NVFlash Recovery thread.
-- The CWM .img file (next item will tell you how to get it.)
3. Next you will need to extract the CWM .img file from the .zip file you
downloaded. First, extract the files from the download -- you should get
a recovery folder and an update.zip. Now unzip the update.zip file and
you will get a file named recovery.img.
4. Rename the file "recovery.img" to "part9.img".
5. Now edit the file "nvflash_gtablet.bat to make the command line read:
"nvflash.exe" --bl bootloader.bin --download 9 part9.img
The command line above for the .bat file does require the quotes around
nvflash.exe!!!
Or you can simply leave the other .bat file alone and create a new
nvflash_cwm.bat file and put the cwm command line in it if you want to.
6. Boot your tablet into APX mode using power/volume - (you will have a black
screen). Connect the USB cable from your G-Tablet to your PC. If you check
the little USB/green check icon on the PC toolbar (bottom right corner of screen)
you see an APX connection listed.
7. Go to the NVFlash subdirectory on your PC and run the .bat file to load CWM.
8. When the flash is done, use the USB/Green Check icon to disconnect from
the PC and then disconnect from the G-Tablet.
9. Shut down and the boot the G-Tablet into Recovery Mode by pressing
Power/Volume + and hopefully you will see the word "Android" and then the
green CWM menu will appear."
Now you're ready to do whatever you need to do with CWM.
Hope this helps.

This suggest that NVflash tool is more versatile. Not only can you flash the stock ROM but also the recovery and perhaps other ROM's as well.
Thank you for the post. It worked wonderfully. It saved me from having to buy a sdMicro card that I would not need otherwise.
holzy99,
NVFlashing is most useful -- but it also is useful to have a microSD card handy.
In the Q&A forum you will find a similar post I did on how to install CWM using a
microSD card in a pinch. When you need it, you need it!!!

Ok so I have CWM and BL 1.1 on my GTab. I would like to move to BL 1.2 so that I can install a 1.2 Honeycomb.
I also only have access to linux.
So I got the Linux NVFlash tool. I try to get into APX mode and that just boots me into the CWM recovery. NVFlash does not find my GTab.
lsusb shows:
Bus 004 Device 031: ID 0955:7100 NVidia Corp.
Then when I try ./nvflash_gtablet.sh I get:
Nvflash started

Nothing happens.
What am I missing? Has anybody found a good Linux how to?
Thanks

Yep same problem for me.
New gtab 2.1
Followed cyangen install instructions in the update guide and there was no mention of differences between 1.x and 2.x platforms. SO of course I put a 1.x CMW on my 2.1 platform. Cant boot into recovery. Can boot into the god aweful stock rom.
Followed the NVflash instructions. Installed drivers.
One interesting note is that after finding the apx device, pointing to the drivers, and completing the install (windows of course), there is no apx anything in my drivers lists.
Im in desperate need of getting CMW on this thing.

I think I might be missing something and I apologize if you feel like you are repeating yourselves but when you edit the .bat file what exactly do you put in the file? If someone could just paste into here what it looks like that would be really helpful.

Error: can not load recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm

So I have my Xoom unlocked and I am trying to flash the recovery in order to root. I tried moving the files from the tools folder to platform tools still no luck.. all of this for the I C S flash I'm going to keep working on a solution I will let you know if I have any luck!
So I have the android sdk in c:\ , and in the sdk folder I have everything, and in the platform tools I have my fastboot and recovery. I then use cmd to get into adb, then I put the xoom in fastboot. From there I try to flash the recovery, which always fails. I must be doing something wrong here.
Try downloading the IMG again. Or try out the rogue recovery. I actually like rogue better.

Think you have to be stock to flash to ICS, at least that was the word yesterday.
I gave up trying to root just as I found out about the ICS update.

Two simple errors:
1) not opening the command window from the folder where you have fastboot and the image files you're trying to flash; and
2) not realizing that you have hidden file extensions in Windows, and typing ...recovery.img.img

I assume that you've set up a path in environment variables to run adb and fastboot from ay directory... and are running the flash command from a folder other than where your .IMG file is located. In order for fastboot to find the file you're trying to flash, you actually have to run your flash command from the folder your file is located...
So, cd\...\platform-tools and then flash
The simplest way I perform all of my operations for this:
I leave everything installed into it's default locations. I download tiamat's CWM image and place it into the platform-tools folder.
For Windows 7, I use Windows PowerShell.
For example: Open Start Menu > Type "power" to search, "Windows PowerShell" should show up. (For me, its default at the top - so I press enter to open it)
Once opened: I type this configuration EXACTLY as is: (Keys in <>)
Code:
cd C:\Pr <TAB><TAB> An <TAB> An <TAB> Pl <TAB><TAB> <ENTER>
This above brings me directly to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\Platform-tools\
Of course, this will be different depending upon your computer setup. I've nailed this routine to get to the path the quickest.
to use FASTBOOT (XOOM already in fastboot mode):
Code:
./fastboot flash recovery rec<TAB><ENTER>
This auto completes the filename as ./recovery-tiamat-r4c-xxxx.img
Of course, depending on how many files/folders you have, you may have to hit <TAB> multiple times. I have to do it 3 or 4 times to select the recovery image I want.
Auto-complete is a nice thing. "./" is added to command from the working directory.

[Q] Noob Root Walkthru

I am new to the ASUS family of tablets, and j just can't figure out how to root. I have rooted many tablets and installed custom roms before but the i cannot follow the how tos listed here. For one fastboot doesnt work on my computer. It opens and closes immediately. What i would like is a detailed step by step guide with a trouble shooting guide. I mean now i reading about downgrading, blob files and a few other things i never dealt with on my galaxy. Someone help......would love to root this thing. Email me if u want [email protected]
You need to run fastboot from the DOS Prompt
start run - cmd
then type fastboot command.
I take it you have unlocked your bootloader?
Check this thread, it has videos about rooting and whatnot, hope it helps:

....what fastboot folder? I installed the ADK per the instructions, I downloaded the root and recovery image. I looked in the system for a fastboot folder and do not see it. Plus when I try to type in the fastboot command now, it says it is not a recognized command. I am sure this is something simple, but I am just not getting it. Is there a more detailed step by step somewhere that will actually walk you thru the steps without assuming you know what they are talking about? I can root my phone, my galaxy tab all day long and install and change ROMS, but this one has me upside down.
When you installed android SDK and ran SDK manager to install the tools, it should create a "platform tools" folder. In that folder you should see "fastboot.exe." Put the recovery image into the same platform tools folder.
Make sure when you run the command that you are in the command prompt, and that you have navigated to the same platform tools folder. It should then recognize the fastboot command and flash your recovery.

Found the folder and it did have the platform tools in it but Apparently I have forgotten how to navigate in CMD, so I moved the folder to the current location CMD was at. I typed in the command fromt the walkthrough and I get "adbwinapi.dll" is not installed. Not sure if this is progress or not.....so now what.
That file should be in your platform tools folder as well. I think it's a driver issue. Is your tablet showing up in device manager? Does it have a yellow triangle? I'm not really an expert unfortunately, hopefully someone with more knowledge can jump in.

I typed in the command fromt the walkthrough and I get "adbwinapi.dll" is not installed. Not sure if this is progress or not.....so now what.

You should not move the folder. This can cause all kinds of problems. in the cmd prompt just type
cd \folder\folder\etc.
The cd means change directory and you start off with a backslash to set the initial path to the root of your drive. if folder names include spaces then wrap the path with quotes, cd "\folder one\folder two\etc". the prompt should change from C:\windows or whatever to what you typed in.
if you've installed on a drive other than C: then first change to that drive by typing the drive letter followed by a colon, ie D:

I realize this may be obvious, but are you sure your working directory is the one when nvflash is located? Gotta check the simplest stuff first.
I extracted the .rar to folders on the desktop; the .rar itself is in the downloads folder.
Verify id nvflash.exe is in same dir?

Yes, nvflash.exe is in the same folder; there are 26 files in the folder.
So you seem to be trying to use nvflash.exe, but why don't you try using OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe ? I don't remember using command prompt before so I'm kind of confused as to why you're using it.
I am attempting to use OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe; it opens fine, and while depressing both volume rockers I connect my phone via USB, Windows recognises it (nVidia mobile driver is there in Device Manager), I choose Flash CWM 5.0.2.0 Internal and External SD ROM, and then the error message I get, in a blue window, is:
"nvflash.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
Every time.
Try running one of the scripts directly? Since that's all its really doing...

Okay, I put together a simple batch file that emuilates OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe. I tested it and it works, so here's hoping it works for you. Let me know if I messed anything up.

I'm obviously doing something wrong, because that didn't work for me either. I extracted it to a folder on the desktop, and when I entered 1 and then enter, the window disappeared.
The procedure I use it, open NVFlash, depress the volume rockers and connect the phone via USB. At what point do I let go of the volume rockers?
I think there's your problem. Put your phone in update mode by holding down the buttons, THEN start NVFlashAid (unless you actually know the nvflash commands). Keep the buttons held until the window closes. Don't worry, it's really quick.
No difference, unfortunately. The NVFlashaid window disappears, and nothing else happens.
Within the NVFlashAid folder, there is the RUNME!.bat and a folder called NVFlashAid which contains multiple files, including RUNME!.bat. I have tried it with both RUNME!s with the same result.
nvflash.exe --bct HYNIX.bct --bl fastboot.bin --download 5 CWM_5.0.2.0.img
Navigate to that directory in command prompt, put the phone in update mode, and run that command. That's the last thing I can think of.
The battery is in when ur holding the buttons down?

Regrettably, I'm not savvy enough to know how to do that. I do know how to open the cmd prompt and copy/paste the quoted script, but navigating to the directory first is beyond me. I did copy/paste that and when I hit enter I got the same error message as mentioned in my previous posts. I do thank you for your time and effort though. :good:

No, I am following the guide from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Oh, why didn't you say you don't know how to change directories? Copy the NVFlashAid folder to the root of the C: drive (that is, C:\). Now open up command prompt, type in the following without the quotes "cd C:\NVFlashAid". Then use the command I listed.
Thank you for your continued efforts, but same error message:
"nvflash.exe is not recognized ..." bla bla bla
I'm wondering if it's a VMWare issue. I have succesfully rooted other phones through VMWare but the guide below says to "kill" Vm Ware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
This is the only way I know how to run Windows on this laptop.
Are you using 64bit os?

Looks like you don't, or you mistyped the file name, or you forgot the file extension.

To use adb, the device must be in Android with USB debugging on.

Wew this thing is harder than i taught, thanks for clearing things up for me.
Ok now another problem adb is running im able to identify that my device is connected by typing adb devices all is good.
The problem now is that when i type adb pull/data/media/AndroidRoot it doesnt work it just list the different adb commands i also tried adb pull /tmp/AndroidRoot from the tutorial but this doesnt work either and i made sure i checked spelling its all good.
Im able to navigate to data/media/AndroidRoot using ES file explorer and the blob.bin file is in there.
So i decided to boot into apx mode and was successful but when i run wheelie.exe from computer the black pop up box (cmd window) just opens for like a sec and closes i think it says specify blob file or something like that. So i copied the blob.bin file from tablet using es explorer and then copied it to my computer where the wheelie.exe file is but still no luck. Im really stressed trying to do this am i doing something wrong?
You don't run wheelie directly.... Put it with your blob file and fastboot, and adb and nvflash than execute it from your terminal. Hope that hleps

That works only directly after creating the blobs while still booted inside the recovery.

Open the cmd window first, then run wheelie with the correct command line options as described in the guide.
