HTC Trace keyboard Swype-like functionality?
Wow, I thought HTC and Swype had an on going deal, looks like Sense is taking over
I like Swype, NOT Swype like

Why do you think it will make a difference? I mean there are only so many ways you can "swype" your finger across the screen.
I use and love Swype, but am excited about the HTC version.
And you still have option of downloading Swype.

I like it because of HTC sense skin
Any vids?
I always thought stock sense keyboard was much better than swype. Unless you were swyping, the keyboard was next to useless. Hopefully the 'tracing' doesn't hamper your ability type fast on it. I'd be very interested in a revitalized HTC_IME_MOD keyboard.

There are other "swiping" keyboards already available though, like SlideIT. I guess there isn't a patent on swiping?
As I've had a chance to test Trace on the Sensation, I'd just like to say I'm very happy with it. It takes some getting used to, and some words don't predict quite as well as others, but overall it's worth using in my opinion; it speeds up texting a lot.

Thanks! Can't wait for June 8th!
Got my Sensation today and I've been playing around with various keyboards. I used to use Shapewriter on my Nexus One but the higher resolution messes it up a bit ): Tried a few others before discovering the "Turn on Trace Keyboard" option in settings.
Ticked it
Nothing happened. I can't swipe on the HTC keyboard... not sure what I'm doing wrong.

That happened to me too. Untick it, tick it again, try again? I can't remember how I got it working...
It also only works in apps like GMail, where word predictions are thrown up. Elsewhere, like the browser URL address, you have to type normally.
That'd explain it... I was trying it out in the search widget every time. I can see how it'd be useful not using it when typing a web address or email address, but not having spell check in the search box always baffled me.

I've checked, and as I found out, it works when You have word prediction on (and dictionary) with this option (I have it in Polish, so translating 1:1): "Enable completion for the QWERTY". After enabling - tracing works fine.
For me, HTC doesn't put much effort on this kind of text input, because, when I used SWYPE (on my previous Blackstone), I was abble to turn completion off, and still could SWYPE. Also, on SWYPE, You can press and hold one letter, and then press another, and SWYPE puts trace from 1st to 2nd - in HTC's Touch input (with tracing on) it's impossible... Just a thought....

nice one...
I looked it up on my sensation just because of this thread and I realized that it is there and it works (quite well, I might add).
The option however is horribly translated, that's why I never thought about enabling that thing. For the german users around here, go to your keyboard settings --> "Touch Input" --> "Tastatur nachverfolgen" --> and then tick "Tastatur nachverfolgen".
That translation is borderline idiotic, because it means something like "follow the keyboard" or something like that, at least it's a really bad translation for "trace keyboard" (or whatever the original says).
Anyway, hope this helps some of you, have fun with the "hidden feature"
EDIT: I'm gonna have to revoke my statement about it working nicely. It feels like the keyboard is overly sensitive to the swiping and most of the time predicts totally random stuff that seems way more improbable than the word I actually meant to write. I'm probably gonna stick to SwiftKey or, if I want swiping, SlideIT, which I found to be more precise.
Unfortunately this HTC Trace is very disappointing. Hard to use, most of the time writes random stuff.

Coming from having an iphone for ~3 years and having an amazing correction system despite not having a custom user dictionary....the correction system on android is HORRIBLE.
If i make a mistake and just use the space bar to automatically fill in the word, it always seems to put the Capitalized version of the word i Want, so it looks Like this sentence; just random capitalized in the middle of a sentence.
Or, i just made a mistake, and it corrected me with the word "changed", which was ok because that was actually very close to what i wanted: "changes". So when i backspaced to change the "d" to an "s", it puts a capitalized S at the end of a word. Or i mistype the word are and accidentally put in "sre", the choice it will put in if i hit space is "Are", yet "are" is right next to it....
It has happened on the android keyboard and Better Keyboard from the market. I like auto capitalization to be on, but jeez it obviously knows what word i want because it puts the lower cased version of the word right next to the capitalized version....i just dont understand how it cant be smart enough to understand that we dont want a capitalized word in the middle of a sentence.
Is there any hope?? A setting i am missing or maybe another keyboard i can try that doesn't do this?? Sorry for the rant! I tried to get used to it but it didn't work...
Personally I use Smart keyboard pro, but if you don't want to spend any money better keyboard is quite nice. But I agree, the default keyboard is terrible

im currently using Better Keyboard and it does the same capitalization errors....i may check out Smart Keyboard
This is so effin stupid, simple if the word your looking for its not highlighted click on the arrow and look for the word you intended. At least the keyboard give you suggestions unlike the iPhone. How many time the iPhone keyboard suggested me the wrong effin word. Frustrating. BTW I'm using Better keyboard. The captivate community are plain morons never heard things like over at the nexus one threads. I get it this is at&t first good android so people are just a lil daze and confuse coming from and iPhone.

I use the keyboard ripped from from teh droid x, it also works better if you dont have sticks for fingers
I don't care how stupid you think this is. Yep I am coming from an iPhone and I can guarantee you that the iPhones correction system was twice as good as androids even without the word choice. And yes, all I have to do is reach up and tap the correct word but in my opinion, it should never even give me a capitalized word if I am typing in the middle of the sentence.
And if it has never happened to you, then that is the reason I asked the question. To me, it seems simple enough and I figured I was just missing some setting. But, im currently using Smart Keyboard Pro and have yet to have it happen. It happens with both the android keyboard and Better Keyboard, but hasn't happened yet with this one.

Hi all,
New to the Android scene. I have an iPhone3gs and am leaning towards the Inspire over the Atrix. Quick noob question. Can Swype be installed on this device?
Yes but
Unless you are rooted (which at least for now looks semi-difficult), you need to sideload it. I haven't had enough posts yet to post an outside link, but you can Google "install swype inspire" and the first hit should get you started.

@antioch216: Thanks. That was the link I wanted to post!
It's very easy. Didn't take me all that long either. I used the Mac/Linux method and it was easy breezy.
Thanks for the link. One other question. What are your thoughts on Swype vs the stock keyboard? I've never actually used it myself but have heard lots of hype surrounding it.
Thanks!
Swype is really awesome I think. It's really easy to get used to. In my experience you only have to use one finger and it's pretty forgiving in terms of the letters you hit.

Swype is much faster for me once I got used to it.... except when it's messing up. Sometimes the autocorrect is just so bad that it would be faster to send the message in morse code, but that doesn't happen often.

nope, no root required. I haven't rooted and I just followed the guide and now I've got Swype!
AT&T blocks the ability to download from other sources (sideloading) and so this program is essentially a work around, but doesn't disturb any original settings. So if anything happened to your phone, AT&T wouldn't know unless the employee knew about this stuff.
Just follow the guide, and you'll have Swype, it's pretty easy

I believe every time you reset, you just have to change the input mode. It's just a default setting that isn't changeable to my knowledge. It happens to everyone
On my captivate, using Swype, when I pressed in the text area, I got a little button to move the cursor around. I get the same type little button with the default keyboard on my Inspire. With Swype, though, I get just a cursor, and I have to press and hold to magnify, more like an iphone. Is there any way to change that?

Okay I've searched through the forums kind of half assed but I don't feel like wasting time anyway
I'm displeased with HTC's touch input keyboard and back when I had my captivate I bought smart keyboard pro because I could pretty much choose how big the space bar was cause I have a tendency to hit the period button constantly when I'm typing fast and it annoys the crap out of me I have it installed on my HTC but it won't let me use it or switch keyboards is there some trick I don't know to using a different keyboard? Not a great intro for requesting the time of others who HAVE chosen to waste their time learning about their phones.

I have a tendency to do the same thing with the stock keyboard, hitting the period instead of the space bar. It is because the keyboard is not centered due to the arrow buttons and stock buttons on the right. I have found that sliding my fingers more under the phone with the left hand versus the right hand helps. I've also tried searching for an alternative keyboard, but found nothing I was pleased with. I do like the stock keyboard, with the exception of those arrow buttons on the right, even though I do find them handy at times.

You have to long press in the text input area and select input method and choose your keyboard. Well at least for me on the Unity rom it sticks that way. YMMV on stock or other roms

There are ways and then there are ways to approach a newbie question.... I know, because after more than 10 years as a Windows Mobile user I just switched to my first Android a couple of months ago and browsed here looking for an answer to this very same question. If you have an Inspire (like I do) and, quite surely, got it from AT&T (like I also do), then you'll face the same problem like the guy who started this thread (changing your default keyboard is just NOT an option, aka hidden by the AT&T "geniuses" by default....). But I tried this option quoted above and worked for me. (Thanks, sparker!!) At least till I reboot my phone, I guess....
Again, there's always more than one way to approach a question, regardless how naive it may sound!!

Phone currently drying out from a wet screen protector install, but I'll try it as soon as it's back up.
Thanks.
I was wondering why this tablet's stock keyboard doesn't have the option of long pressing to get alternate symbols and punctuation? If so, where might I find this option? I find it remarkable that my much smaller phone keyboard offers this, but the TF300T (running stock JB) I have to click the alternate key to see my other choices? Seems rather archaic.
I can, indeed long press a key and THEN I see my options, but why doesn't each key have a smaller, offset symbol of what I would get WHEN I long press? Currently, it does me no good if I have to long press each and every key?
Please let me know if I'm missing something

Take a look at SwiftKey (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.touchtype.swiftkey). I really like it, very accurate on predictions and customization, You can let it read your messages, facebook and twitter account so it can learn words. It really makes you type faster, most of the time I don't even need to long press to get special characters, instead of ã I just replace it with simple a, like in mansão, I just type mansao and it'll output the right word for me. It's common to happen that I type three letters and it already suggests the right word for me.
Give it a try, the trial period is really big. And it's cheap now, on sale. Check Google Play.

Good feedback on both. Yes, English, and I don't use a Dock. (That's another conversation with me... I have a laptop, and I wanted a tablet...I've never understood the point of adding a keyboard to a tablet. Then it isn't a tablet. But that's just me. I use them for different things.)

I was asking because the dock doesn't work very well for languages with special characters, like Portuguese (I speak/write mainly in Brazilian Portuguese), you have to add a keyboard software to help with that too, not a big deal tough.
Anyway, I like the dock, when I have it attached I have the laptop experience, when I want. If I want the tablet experience, I just detach it and that's it. And the extra juice is a real plus too, the keyboard charges the tablet, so it's not actually just a extra battery. It's good 'cos most of the time I only take the tablet+dock with me, I'm hardly using my netbook now. But that's my case, it's not a one size fits all solution, o'course.
Good luck with the keyboards
So far, not impressed with the 4 I've tried
So far, I've tried a few of the keyboards and they seem too overly designed for their own good. All I need is a long press for alternate keys/symbols where I can see that on the keys. Don't care about the customization, or adding silly smiley keys, or even the thumb keys. I use Swype a lot and some don't have that option or some use a version of that. I'll keep looking!
