[Q] Swype? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi all,
New to the Android scene. I have an iPhone3gs and am leaning towards the Inspire over the Atrix. Quick noob question. Can Swype be installed on this device?

Yes but
Unless you are rooted (which at least for now looks semi-difficult), you need to sideload it. I haven't had enough posts yet to post an outside link, but you can Google "install swype inspire" and the first hit should get you started.

easiest guide you'll find. Literally took me 5 minutes, and I've never run commands on a computer. Hardest thing was to find a torrent for WinZip lol

@antioch216: Thanks. That was the link I wanted to post!
It's very easy. Didn't take me all that long either. I used the Mac/Linux method and it was easy breezy.

Thanks for the link. One other question. What are your thoughts on Swype vs the stock keyboard? I've never actually used it myself but have heard lots of hype surrounding it.
Thanks!

Swype is really awesome I think. It's really easy to get used to. In my experience you only have to use one finger and it's pretty forgiving in terms of the letters you hit.

Swype is much faster for me once I got used to it.... except when it's messing up. Sometimes the autocorrect is just so bad that it would be faster to send the message in morse code, but that doesn't happen often.

i'm a big fan of swype.

Go here and you can download the beta version of swype to your phone http://www.swypeinc.com/

Would def like to try out swype if I could

nope, no root required. I haven't rooted and I just followed the guide and now I've got Swype!
AT&T blocks the ability to download from other sources (sideloading) and so this program is essentially a work around, but doesn't disturb any original settings. So if anything happened to your phone, AT&T wouldn't know unless the employee knew about this stuff.
Just follow the guide, and you'll have Swype, it's pretty easy

cool beans ...tried it out and works real smooth....thnx

My main problem comes from the built-in dictionary, not it's prediction. Why the hell would I use "beefier" when I'm trying to type "before"?

I believe every time you reset, you just have to change the input mode. It's just a default setting that isn't changeable to my knowledge. It happens to everyone

On my captivate, using Swype, when I pressed in the text area, I got a little button to move the cursor around. I get the same type little button with the default keyboard on my Inspire. With Swype, though, I get just a cursor, and I have to press and hold to magnify, more like an iphone. Is there any way to change that?

Swype Official download. YES OFFICIAL!

I created this thread in desire HD section as i own one but thought everyone shold know
All Android users looking for Swype but cannot get it, your in luck. head over to http://beta.swype.com
i happened to be looking at the site and noticed that they have started registering again for beta users. I registered and got Swype beta free. PS its a December 2010 build
SO hurry up before they stop registering.
Register for swype. activate the link in your email and then download to your device. login with your username and password and USE
and its official! Too be honest i looked everywhere maybe finding a working cracked version as i cant use the HTC keyboard because i'm addicted to Swype but no need for a warez Swype. Just register for the Beta.
Beta version works perfectly too. tried and tested last night.
No cracks, no trials, simply an official method of getting swype. Feel free to thank me if this helps!
Make sure if you have a previous build of swype you uninstall
Warning,
Doesn't have all the languages that the old unofficially got Swype 1.6 beta..
misses like half or more for example finnish language.
I got this yesterday its badass
This is legit!
Finally a FULLY working Swype on my Droid 1. I only did the English/Spanish choice.
Thanks man.
Cool. Im not sure what languages it has yet but will have a look later. Just payroll the full version if you are looking for other languages

Thanks a bunch. I've got this on my Desire Z and didn't like it when I used it on my Xperia X10... but it's fantastic! I was just too lazy to go through the tutorial the first time around lol
It seems a lot more intuitive and much improved. I'll show my wife tonight because I signed her up too. This is awesome when I'm too lazy to pull out the keyboard. And it's actually kind of fun. I've been spamming all my friends with random texts

With Swype yeah. say for example you want to add the word ikhzter into the dictionary, because my name isnt in the dictionary.
Type it in once, I K H Z T E R, and it will automatically add it to the dictionary, next time round just slide the word not tap and it will automatically put it in as it saved it last time.
swype is much clever, instead of clicking add it auto adds, to delete just highlight a word and press swype key to delete neat i know
It still beta though , it will expire by the end of the month
I've been using SWYPE beta in my Motorola OG MileStone 2.1 for about 3 month now , Im reinstalling a new beta from SWYPE website every month now

I got the inspire 4g early

I got the Inspire 4G. It really is a nice device. It truly is a re-badged Desire HD. HTC has forgotten to change some of the BT menus so they even still say Desire HD.
The software set is fairly decent and unrestrictive. There is a fair amount of AT&T Bloatware that can't just be uninstalled (normal).
I have been up all morning trying to find a version of SWYPE that hasn't expired that has a matching screen resolution for the phone. Even being part of the beta you can sideload the swype app but then the app itself wants to install a separate language pack which the phone blocks.
Feel free to PM suggestions or post questions.

This is an easy fix fortunately with the Telus radio. Stupid on their part though. At least its fixable by us on the Inspire, unlike the atrix.

Early reports have suggested that the RUU downgrade (in order to root) is causing sound to fail on the Telus Desire HD. So tread cautiously with your Inspires. Maybe they changed the audio hardware and the older firmwares don't have a driver for it?

One person who got the sound bug just got his DHD replaced and won't try again until it is safe. Another user who got it too - has said he will try reflashing the Telus RUU when he gets home in a few hours. If that succeeds then at least we know there's a safety net.
The sound bug is fixed already. i'm running a euro rom on mine with working sound. Everything will be available shortly.
Btw flashing the att ruu fixed any issues i had with sound so there is a safety net.

Swype - Any devs want to try to fix this?

I posted on Swype forums a while back about the issue with Swype on this phone. They replied saying the auto space (which im guessing auto capitalization falls in the same catagory) does not work because HTC has made sense reply window treat the data entered by the user as a web address link - because noone wants spaces in their links. I have found that most people say cracking HTC's Sense code is almost impossible but i was wondering if someone could come up with a fix for this.
Whats the problem? Swype seems to work fine for me...

If you use Handcent or ChompSMS it works. But yeah, definitely fails on the stock Sense message app.

i'm using it now on the thunderbolt and it's autospacing
I've installed and uninstalled this a half dozen times because of similar issues.
Something else I've noticed sporadically is that even when I do get it working properly using Handcent SOMETIMES I have to still manually type. Meaning it makes a trace mark, but the letters never pop up.
Now going to look for the EVO swype.

Yep, EVO swype was the best one that I've found. The only thing I can't get it to do is put the auto punctuation in after you double space. Other than that it works great.
EDIT: What I can't figure out is if the EVO version is nearly perfect...why doesn't Swype just take it and revise it a little? Or, I guess maybe they tried and messed it up even worse?

Changing keyboard on inspire

Okay I've searched through the forums kind of half assed but I don't feel like wasting time anyway
I'm displeased with HTC's touch input keyboard and back when I had my captivate I bought smart keyboard pro because I could pretty much choose how big the space bar was cause I have a tendency to hit the period button constantly when I'm typing fast and it annoys the crap out of me I have it installed on my HTC but it won't let me use it or switch keyboards is there some trick I don't know to using a different keyboard? Or is it even possible?

Not a great intro for requesting the time of others who HAVE chosen to waste their time learning about their phones.

you should be able to figure it out from there. If you don't see your downloaded/installed keyboard, uninstall and reinstall, rinse, repeat..

I have a tendency to do the same thing with the stock keyboard, hitting the period instead of the space bar. It is because the keyboard is not centered due to the arrow buttons and stock buttons on the right. I have found that sliding my fingers more under the phone with the left hand versus the right hand helps. I've also tried searching for an alternative keyboard, but found nothing I was pleased with. I do like the stock keyboard, with the exception of those arrow buttons on the right, even though I do find them handy at times.

You have to long press in the text input area and select input method and choose your keyboard. Well at least for me on the Unity rom it sticks that way. YMMV on stock or other roms

Meanwhile, the spoon-feeding continues. For an Android 101 question.
I mean, it's one thing to not want to figure out something, but to preface a question admitting it?

There are ways and then there are ways to approach a newbie question.... I know, because after more than 10 years as a Windows Mobile user I just switched to my first Android a couple of months ago and browsed here looking for an answer to this very same question. If you have an Inspire (like I do) and, quite surely, got it from AT&T (like I also do), then you'll face the same problem like the guy who started this thread (changing your default keyboard is just NOT an option, aka hidden by the AT&T "geniuses" by default....). But I tried this option quoted above and worked for me. (Thanks, sparker!!) At least till I reboot my phone, I guess....
Again, there's always more than one way to approach a question, regardless how naive it may sound!!
