I'm new to Android - my apologies if this is an ignorant question.
If I root my Captivate will I be removing myself from OTA updates?
From what I understand rooting it does not prevent you from getting the OTA updates but if you put a custom ROM on there you will not be able to get the Samsung ROM when they release it - but then again you won't need it. Everything I've read about Samsung so far pretty much indicates that won't be anytime soon - apparently they are terrible at software updates. I don't know that first hand though, this is the first Samsung Smartphone I've owned.
If you rooted just to remove the AT&T bloat then you should have no worries about when they release Froyo.
If I'm wrong someone please correct me!
No, you'll be fine.
Edit: I agree with what the previous poster said.
Awesome, thanks guys. Looks like I'll move forward with a root this weekend. Time to remove some AT&T crapware
also you can always remove root later if its a problem
since you're new to android and this phone, i highly suggest you read the Pimp my captivate pdf provided for in a sticky on this sub forum.

First thing I did when I got home was jump on xda and read through that PDF. It's well put together; thanks for taking the time. I wanted to wait awhile for some others to take the plunge and report before I dove in myself.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure there was already a leaked copy of the Samsung Froyo so I don't think it will be too far off for the OTA

Quite the opposite. That leaked copy is an early test build which lacks a lot of features and buggy as well.
^yeah dont try it!!!
I am new to the Smartphone and I have an naive question? Is there any possible danger to root the Captivate? Would it be locked by AT&T? Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by "locked by AT&T", but, AT&T will never know its been rooted unless they have it in their hands.
There is always the possibility of something going wrong, but unlikely if you follow the directions as they are written. Research is important too. I've learned TONS here, from others mistakes and experiments.
i have epic 4g (rooted) but OTA not working.
cant update PRL, FIRMWARE, nor profile. I am kinda worried.
Has anyone tried updating PRL?
Is there a way to install OTA.APK back to my rooted phone? I copied the old stock OTA.APK to my sd card and tried installing it in debugging mode, but wouldnt let me.
Help?

Anyone think we should unroot before updating to 2.2? (when ever the hell that is)

is there a stock rom that can be flashed to just put the phone back in its original form? im planning on returning my phone and the unroot is super simple, but idk how to get back to the stock rom.
why are you returning?

put in clockworkmod backup folder and restore than use super one click to unroot, and factory reset. T-Mobile will never know:

i know that the kinks will be worked out eventually but this phone isnt even stable for me on the stock rom, just gonna get something more stable for the time being, i cant handle having a glitchy slow phone, especially when its suppose to be as good as this phone is.
edit: also im looking for an actual rom not a nandroid backup, something i just flash from the sd card like any other rom, i've had stock roms to restore for every phone ive had, its just convenient to be able to flash back to stock for returns and repairs

the nandroid backup i provided would be as if your flashing. there are no extra apps. you just restore and than you unroot and factory reset. did you try eagleblood rom it makes the phone better than what it truly is. i was about to return and i tried that rom and its amazing.

i didnt realize how easy the nandroid thing was, but yeah i tried eagles blood rom, it was nice, it ran like stock without bloat and had a few cool color changes, but i still got the lag on my lock screen, randomly my audio files stop working til i rebooted and just other random lock ups with videos.
its a shame cuz i love the way the phone looks, and i might kick myself in the ass for returning it someday, but right now i just dont wanna wait for those kinks to get worked out, cm7 has alot of work ahead before its stable on this phone, and some of the issues im not even sure if cm7 can fix since they seem universal.

The lag on the lock screen is one of many things that will be fixed in the 2.3.3 update due later this month. Every preview that I watched before this phone was released said that this phone was meant to run 2.3.3. I guess they wanted to beat HTC out with duel core so the released it with 2.2. Watch the video on this link g2x running 2.3.3. This is the nature of any phone when first released. There will be bugs. Besides going out and just getting a different phone may not be so easy. Since this phone runs vanilla android it is a lot easier to update.

Typically any Official update will break #SU access and sometimes cause a serious headache in the process.
If you are rooted, do not apply the update. Just wait for a kitchen baked variant to be released.

The ones in the radio thread stickied in the development section are ok to flash. They are setup properly for root. Bluetooth definitely got some attention in this update. Much more stable connection than before, not perfect, but much better and livable.

maybe fixes visual voicemail bug?
For about 6 weeks I've been having issues with the stock visual voicemail app force-closing every time I tried to use it. I tried going into the app's settings area and clearing its data, then re-enabling it in the caller app, all to no avail.
I just installed this update and it looks like my VVM is working again, so I'm hoping this was indeed a known issue and was fixed.
(FTR, I'm not sure that a factory reset before the update wouldn't have fixed the problem, but I didn't feel like re-installing all my apps so I let it go and just used the old-school voicemail number for a while.)
Is there anyway possible for me to get the update because i had s-off and then i wanted to unroot but i used gfree so i had to use gfree and ran into a crap load of problems leaving me right now with s-off and no root permissions . i need to get a new mytouch because this one randomly restarts and i cant send in one with s-off... can anyone help me out?

Is there anything in this radio other than a new radio and new hboot?
I'm s-off via engineering bootloader, NOT gfree. Is it worth the trouble to use gfree so I can ruu and stay s-off, accept the update, then flash clockworkmod recovery via bootloader, then go back to cm7?

Unlock at HTCdev then use the above link(paulobrien method) it works with US T-Mobile also. Its as simple as connecting phone to PC and installing the file. Presto! Root!

quick edit: i used obrians method, worked good and everything works fine, started up normally with a little lag then smoothly continued, im figuring that thats it....now for a rom anyone has a good rom that is good, i like the same default one that was with the phone, but all i wanted to do was keep everything and just completely take out the bloatware....i dont mind having the themes changed i just want the bloatware out of this amazing phone. thanks for helping me out.

Restoring system app data I would avoid, but to restore user apps use titanium backup. Its free and great if properly used. Just set your filters to make sure you don't include any system apps on your batch backup. And when you restore the apps, I would batch restore the apps and then restore the app data only for apps where you actually need to restore app data.
And don't tell Scott I recommended backing up and restoring.
To the guy scared of borking, don't worry its a good file.

TB Doesnt like this root method. Clear TB data and SuperSU data. Make sure you update binaries in Super SU then set the default permissions to allows allow. Other than that I have no clue. I get root with every app no problem.
Let me guess who rated the thread 2 stars? Hmmmm....

BTW TB works fine here, it acquires root w/o problem.

I know man... Some people are quick to downgrade something when they dont know how to use it. lol
Some peoples kids!
One possible nice addition would be 4in1 power buttons, even if it was hidden somewhere so the wife couldn't accidentally hit it.. The ability to jump to recovery would be nice since it's pissy to do it the hardware "button"/cold way. I know it's stock, and I greatly appreciate it. I have it loaded for my wife, but jumping to recovery from the device without issues, another app, or a tool kit would be nice. Just an idea. Thanks.
Going to check this out, just want something stock and speedy. CM10 was a bit too unstable for me at the moment. Thanks for the ROM!
