Im coming from a HTC Desire Z aka G2, and it got water damage and is toast.
this phone seems like a likely competitor to my savy qwerty texting habits and has all the right features in the right place. 8 mp camera, 720p recording, a good processor and is quad band including 3g? thats awesome!
what are your thoughts on this phone? it is due around end ofsummer, Will it be available for Rogers in Canada? any honest feedback is appreciated, the phone seems awesome but i tend to overlook minimal things.
Whats your thoughts?

and now since the bootloader is apparently going to be shipped unlocked, the modding community would be huge.

Surely that's something you'd need to ask Rogers?

The bootloaders aren't shipped unlocked. But SE will provide you with an unlocking code for free.
The only point to bear in mind is that only handsets that are SIM-unlocked/un-branded can have their bootloaders unlocked. So basically if you purchase directly from a network, you'll be stuck with a locked bootloader (as things stand, obviously someone could work out how to crack it by the time the Pro goes on sale).
As for the modding community being huge, it's pretty quiet for the Arc and the Play at the moment.
The handsets have been rooted a couple of different ways but developing Recovery for them is slow going and there are no custom ROMs yet.
There simply doesn't seem to be much interest from devs.

Personally, It's not my thing, Although nice none the less, One thing I really don't like though is the grid keyboard which I find hard to type on, Might just be me though

Anything under a 4" screen is a non starter for me. Xperia is a nice phone but they are slow and not so much development for it. But then, that's just me

I'd be wary of SE phones. I have an X10 and its a little bit of a let down. SE's custom firmware is sketchy to say the least and there update schedule is terrible. The X10 was SE's first android phone and they seem to be listening and learning from this customer's, hence the X10 2.3 update that was announced recently, but I'd be very wary. Test the phone out at a store of something for a bit and see how you like it. Perhaps SE has really improved with their latest phone.

Lessons have already been learnt with the likes of the Arc and the Play, which would be a much more reasonable basis for any opinion of the Pro as they're essentially all the same handset with subtle tweaks to the hardware.
SE have drastically overhauled their custom UI so that it impacts less on firmware updates and, unlike the X10, have launched their new handsets with the latest version of Android as opposed to being out of date from day one.

Andorid Phone with Keyboard?

Hey fellow XDA'ers! I have a HD2 now, and want to get a phone with a keyboard after having a N900
Well, I know the dell lightning will have a nice slider, but Im liking WP7 less and less as people talk about it. I want a android, with a keyboard.
Thanks! - GamerMYJ

GSM- MyTouch Slide
Just stay away from Motorola's
Actually moto droid/milestone is by far the best android if you need a keyboard, it is as thin as without a keyboard. it has no buttons around the sides and the notification light is the very best - not rediculously bright.

The keyboard on that thing SUCKS, but then again, it's all a matter of opinion (and I share the same opinion as most people).

I really don't think the keyboard is that bad
how about the lg eve? the keys are small but are better spaced out.
Im looking for a GSM, and considered the mytouch, but the processor is slower then most phones I've had... How come most phones with keyboards arnt as good as touch only?
Droid: I've really heard the keyboard sucks, dont want to risk it
Lg eve: TINY screen. Going from hd2 to eve: suicide.
I with the EVO had a keyboard..
Cheap QWERTY Android: Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro.
Expensive QWERTY Android: HTC Vision (HTC Desire with a Keyboard) (Unknown release date, rumored to be after summer)
This one
HTC Rhodium with XDAndroid
HTC Kaiser with flashed Eclair 2.1, why reinvent the wheel?
I would stay away from the Moto Droid's KB. The phone itself is great but the KB is awkward IMO.
Geek press says the mytouch slide has great KB but haven't personally tried it.

+1 on rhodium running xandroid..some things arent working still..ie :sound,bt, but i can deal with that
Why get another phone only to put Android on it? Seems pointless to me.... especially if you're suggesting something that breaks sound.

froyo for milestone/xt701/xt720

great news
seems like milestone is getting froyo in Q4
xt701/xt720 is just tiny variant of milestone so i assume they will be getting update as well

The Motoroi update is the one you'd want to pay attention to for the XT701/720 updates.

disagree.
They need to include a Froyo update for the Milestone XT720. I love this phone, even more so than my iPhone 3G. I bought this phone over an iPhone 4 because it's cheaper, has a decent processor, better camera (and who needs a front cam when you can only facetime chat with other iPhone 4 users) and provides freedom from Apple's AppStore (although Android needs to pick up the pace a bit and either lure in some of Apple's App developers or do a better job on their own). With all that said, it's worthless having a phone that never has the opportunity to advance.
Kor ver have 2.2.1 now!!!
Just wait xda can make cm6 & mui on it!:d
Jeez, you make it sound so easy.
From what I can tell, it's perfectly possible to change the Korean ROM to fit the other versions.
However, I'm yet to see someone who knows how to hack ROMs willing to do that work.
So, is it possible? Yes.
Is it going to happen? Don't know, but it's not looking so good right now.
However, the XT720 is the cheapest "Cortex A8 + SGX + 800*480" handset being sold in the ebays right now, so it's possible to see quite a rise in its userbase.

ROM hacking is easy but the problem is the locked bootloader. After hacking the rom, you'll loose the checksum of the original ROM and the bootloader won't load your hacked ROM.
That's why users are re-selling the handset on eBay with a cheap price. They're ready to jump-ship. (or even already jumped)

Yes, but you can "fake" an upgrade, if there's an original upgraded ROM from Motorola. That's how I upgraded my X10 Mini's firmware (also with a locked bootloader) from 1.6 to another zone's 2.1.
In this case, there's the Korean ROM with 2.2 already.
this is our way to get 2.2 working
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821210
currently the Nexus S has a similar issue, and they are using Fastboot to load up a 3rd party recovery image to do all the hackings
now we just need some DEV with time in their hands to port a Korea 2.2 and make it into an image then we can fastboot to the 2.2, and set the ROM default language to English
How do we convince a DEV to port the Korean 2.2 or at least teach some of us how to do it?
Does anyone found a 2.2 Froyo ROM that will perfectly work? Thank you to all you

As per the article, that 11% is 1/9 phones, and the 1 had all sorts of issues during the upgrade.

I included only phones released by major manufacturers and tied to one of the four main U.S. carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon). As mentioned above, I looked at phones released in 2009 and 2010.

I am not trying to defend AT&T here, but it is worth noting that most of their Android phones were launched in Nov/Dec, giving very little time in 2011 to get an upgrade (it can be argued they should have started at 2.2, but that is Motorola's issue, not AT&T's).
Also worth noting is that AT&T has had android phones for less than 1 year and is just getting "up to speed" on the android platform. The Backflip was upgraded from 1.6 to 2.1 in 2010 (which is as high as Moto supports for the Backflip), and while it doesn't count for the article, it should have given AT&T some experience in how to do android upgrades that will help in the future for other upgrades.
If you look at the Android phones that AT&T sold directly (on their website and in their stores) for more than 2 months (3 - Aria, Backflip, & Captivate) and all upgrades (2.1 & 2.2), AT&T is actually at 33%. Since the author did not count the AT&T Nexus 1 (because it was not sold by AT&T), I do not know why the Dell Streak was included either (since it is also not sold by AT&T). The author also included the Dell Aero, which while announced on AT&T, AFAIK, was never actually sold by AT&T.

Everyone is anxiously waiting to get the official CynogenMod 9 support for their device to enjoy the taste of vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich.
This Chart will help you calculate the possibility of getting a CM9 update for your device.
So Will you see CynogenMod 9 on your device...???? Let's hear it from the comments....
Thanks for the chart. According to that, we have a 50% chance of getting official CM9. Not exactly the odds we were hoping for.
****ty odds.

It is, although I have a feeling the CM team is being conservative with their likelihood estimates so they won't hype expectations. Even if your device is getting an official ICS update from your manufacturer, they only give you a 75% chance. I can't image CM9 not coming to your device in that situation, so I bet the chances are actually a lot more than 75% for them, and therefore probably more than 50% chance for us (especially with the DHD getting official ICS).
"Does it have dedicated GPU" is the point that ruins the whole chart to me.
Did you ever see a PC powering up and showing something on the screen without any kind of GPU? And where was the screen connected to at that point?
The same applies for phones. Each SoC has its own GPU, good or bad, and such an item in the table makes it more of a joke.

I didn't understand that either. Even the lowly G1 had a dedicated GPU of some kind.

What new phone should i get?

So i kind of fell out of the phone loop after my One X was stolen and had to use my POS Samsung Infuse. My taxes are coming in and i want to get a new phone again. I been debating on the Nexus 4 because the specs look pretty beefy and the reviews have been good, plus i like the ascetic to it. I'm just leery about it since LG doesn't have the greatest track record on phone since the G2x was a HUGE disappointment to me and the HTC G1 and G2 where my favorite all time phones. So in a nutshell, what phone would you suggest and why (also i don't want a note to, i don't like the size of it. 4.7-4.8 is perfectly fine for me.) But thanks in advance.
N4. G2x wasn't a nexus so a lot of stuff wasn't open source. That's why it was a mess. I still miss my g2x tho

It was a decent phone but it was way too buggy even if you flashed a new rom like Weapon. But like in said the reviews look great the only discerning thing is LG's track record and I don't want to wait weeks for it it. Plus I'm not sure if any decent phones are coming out in Q1 or Q2. I'm not going to get the S4 just because of how fast they come out and people jump ship to the new flagship Galaxy S phone.
