Battery calibration - General Questions and Answers

Can anyone give me an idea how long after i calibrate my battery (charge fully, wipe stats, charge fully while off) will I see a difference, cause it seems to have gotten worse, I didn't see an answer anywhere.

well.. i have done this recently and i think you have to take the rom into consideration. maybe that rom takes more battery. i have an extended battery and i have had this happen to me.

When to clear battery stats?

I have done bump charging and everything I can think of to get my battery to top off at 100% when I remove it from a power source. Every single time though it drops to anywhere from 95-97% within a minute.
Do I need to clear the battery stats and hope for the best? Do I need to request a new battery from Verizon?
Also, to clear battery stats do I need to run the phone down to nearly dead, clear stats, then charge it up? I have conflicting info on when to clear or if it's even a wise idea on the Thunderbolt.

I've been wondering about this as well. Good question
I always turn the phone off, charge to 100% then boot and immediately clear stats. After that let it drain till dead. I like to let it charge back up all the way with the phone off. Then use it normally. Always worked for me.

I've only cleared stats once but this is the process I used. Seemed to work well.

If you leave it on the charger for an extended period of time it will always drop off a few percent rather quickly. A new battery will not fix that. From what I understand it is a feature that helps prevent overcharging. As for battery stats I only clear them if I switch from a standard to an extended battery or sometimes if you flash a ROM when not already charged to 100% and notice the battery has gotten worse.

This. The battery charges to full and then will stop charging to prevent overcharging. Also it's good practice as said above to clear stats after loading a new ROM or switching out batteries.
There is an app on the market called battery calibration which walks you through step by step the proper way to calibrate it. Obviously you have to be rooted but you can clear stats without having to reboot into recovery. Of course you can run the new Das Bamf rom with their toolkit which also has a clear battery stats option in it.
What I do in the mornings when I wake up after charging all night, is reboot and continue to let it charge until I walk out the door.

This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871051 explains why this happens.
Basically the battery meter is lying to you when it says 100% right when you take it off the charger, it's actually a couple percentage points below 100%. This is because keeping the phone at 100% while on the charger shortens the battery life.
So basically don't worry it's normal.
Everyone: I know why it happens and that it's normal.
I am talking about why after I do a bump charge and keep recharging it to 100% (i.e. take it off power, let it dip to 95%, put it back on power, charge till green). After it immediately goes green I pull it off and less than a minute later it's down to 96 or 97%, for example.

[Q] Quirky Battery Stats?

Okay, so each time I reboot my phone, my battery capacity increases dramatically! At one point, I got the notice to put the phone on the charger, and after a reboot, I was back to some 25%? Just now I was at 40%, a reboot now brings it to 56%!
What exactly is up? I charged my phone till it said 100%, then used an app called battery calibration to remove the battery stats file, and then let the phone drain till it shut off. (I couldnt reboot it). I put it on the charger, and let it charge back to 100%. I am confused?!?! This is, by the way, a chichitec 1900mA/Hr battery which has lasted me about 16 hours so far today with pretty moderate use! LOTS of web surfing, internet, and about an hour of phone calls. Its at 50% (or whatever it really is). I know its a great battery, but I hate thinking there is such an oddity about it.
Should I charge back to 100%, then wipe that stats, this time with CWM?
Matt
this is exactly what i was talking to you about yesterday in my "charging times" thread.. seems lots of people are having this issue...is your phone brand new? could just not be calibrated yet

New battery, new ROM, it takes a couple of charging cycling for these things to get working properly....give it time after the initial calibration.
and its not a problem that the phone won't switch om after discharge, it just shows that your battery was completely empty....plug in charger and wait for LED to light!
Quick question,
Is the Battery Calibration (CWM wipe at 100%) a phone, battery or ROM calibration ? I know you need to go through a few cycles after calibrating.
I have done it and since changed ROMs a few times so just wondered. Phone is only a week old so far.

Incorrect battery reporting w/ Sense 3.5

Has anyone realized this or is it just me, every sense 3.5 that I've tried the battery indicator is incorrect.
For example, I just had 41% battery life before resetting my phone and now I have only 4%. Is it not charging the battery correctly? I also turn the phone off after it says 100% and then charge until the green led comes on but still it is either draining too fast and phone doesn't detect it until a reset or the battery isn't be charged completely because the rom thinks it's 100. I have caliibrated and erased the batterystats.bin file so many times and it's still the same. any insight on this? I have a brand new battery from htc as well.
Same problem
Constantly "calibrating" or deleting the battery stats is the exact reason this happens. You dont have to do that, regardless of what people say.
This will happen until the battery has been charged/discharged a few times and will slowly stop happening.
No issue here, got my new anker battery.. Flashed BP 2.1.5 and since then, my battery has been normal and amazing!

This. When I flash ROMs I don't really do anything in relation to the battery. I just use my phone like normal. The first day or two you might get a little more drain than usual, but after that it will be completely normal and you don't have to do anything like wipe battery stats or calibrate or run it down to 5% and charge it all the way up or whatever.
Yes, constantly resetting battery stats is bad. Should only occur right after flashing the new ROM. Ideally you'll have charged your phone to 100%, flashed the new ROM, and immediately putting it through 5 discharge/charge cycles.
My battery life was horrendous when I didn't properly calibrate the battery. Going through the process now and its lasting a significantly longer time compared to not going through the process. I'm talking about getting like 6 hours of light usage compared to like 15.
Or it could be just ARHD. I really didn't like that ROM. Anyways, I'm running Bulletproof 2.1.5 with 3.5 Sense on an Anker battery and its doing great.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that. My battery life was horrendous when I didn't properly calibrate the battery by going through at least 3 full discharge and charge cycles. I've done everything, calibrated the battery numerous times with and without wiping the batterystats.bin and it's still acting up. Say this morning I wake up, take the phone off charge at 100%, go out, and restart the phone for any reason when the phone's battery meter is at 95%, after the restart the meter will jump down to 70%.
This is with a new battery, new rom, totally wiped device, I even used the ruu to get me back to the stock rom.
Anyone have any idea what's the problem? The battery life is ****, and doesn't seem to get any better with calibration.

This is your culprit. Let it bed in a few days, and performance should stabilize.
Go through 5 full charges/discharges, uninterrupted. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but you signed up for it when you flashed a new ROM.
Everytime you wipe your battery stats, you have to go through the 5 cycle process again. Uninterrupted.
EDIT: Had a lil too much rum and misspelled a few words. I even misspelled mispelled
Alright dude, I'm going to take you up on your word, I'll give you another update within 5 days.
This is a problem with all Sensation ROMs, even with S-On and Stock ROMs. I get a problem like this one too. If I have 60% left, and I restart the phone, it goes up to 69% and I don't know why. Also very slow charging from the original wall charger, but if I reboot when it's charging at 70-75%, when it finally boots, it says 100% charge. This must be some bug from HTC or something. :S
Hi,
Same problem (with Sense 3.0/Sence 3.5 and different ROM),but is there a fix for that?
I saw this:

Probably a way to fix the issue?
Should be asked about this in the ROM thread?
Me too same bug since first day, I think it's a battery sensor fault
It's not a hardware fault...it's not a battery fault...it *may* be a ROM/kernel issue...but I suggest you give your battery a few discharge/charge cycles and you'll see it should go back to normal.

[Q] Battery Half Charging

Alright so it's difficult to explain this fully but I'll try. I came across battery calibration information and I went ahead and wiped the stats. I then let it drain, charge full then drain again. Now as it was charging I decided to flash another ROM, done. So that ROM took a while to fully charge but when it did I got 13hrs of battery life out of it. Now when I charge it, pretty much it stays around 50% and wo't bump higher. Literally haven't hit higher after leaving it plugged for more than 3 hours. Anyways I'm about to flash a update of said ROM and use a different kernel that is know to be more stable. But curious if there is hope for my battery? I don't plan on wiping battery stats anymore, after further readings I see it's not worth the trouble.

[Q] Battery Test?

IS there anyway to test your battery to see if its still holding a proper charge? I got my charge second hand and I'm wondering if the battery that came with it is just shot cuz i am not the heaviest user by far and I usually never make it to 8 hours on a full charge. I've tried calibrating it (using battery calibrator and manually wiping batt stats in CWM) and nothing changes. So is there an app or something that can tell whether ur battery is warped or not?
