LTE extended - Thunderbolt General

I live in a city that is in the LTE extended coverage and have been bouncing in and out around my house, Its suppose to be solid coverage. But whatever. Does any one know what conditions would cause me not to pick it up? When I have the 4gs its full bars and good connection but Its in sporadic areas, Also will the new radios allow a better connection, I'm going to try and see but any advance knowledge would be great

Try putting your phone in LTE mode using the app Phone Info. I had the same issue and once I changed it picked up lte all the time.

LTE on off from the market is just a tad quicker. I like it since I'm always switching between 4g and 3g only modes to save battery.

So far that hasn't seemed to do the trick =(

Try this
Go into EPST and set your REV-A to enabled instead of the stock eHRPD, as the algorithm has trouble in some locations. I had the same and even somtimes could not lock to either 3 or 4g until i did, made me think the device was bad but is ok now.

How do u go into EPST

Dial ##778 and hit dial then select "Edit Mode" the password is 000000
That is 6 zero's
Then go to Modem Settings, and select Rev. A change to Enable then hit menu and commit modifications. Your phone will then reboot.

It seems more like this means "there's no LTE coverage here!" than anything, to me at least. A lot of our city is covered under "Extended" and there's no coverage in any of that area, and a lot of areas marked "4G LTE" aren't even covered. It doesn't bounce between 4G and 3G either.
I'd like to know the conditions too. it's probably that they're still testing the towers often.

cell recepyion
Is there any disadvanatages to you cell reception, by doing this either on 4g or 3g ?

They are also not too accurate with their maps, one person posted that they weren't getting coverage where they were supposed to, even outdoors, called it in, and a day or 2 later the map was updated to show that there was no coverage there. If they have a down tower or something that's one thing, but if you are within extended coverage and clearly out in the open and can't get signal you should definitely call in and let them know.

will this change interfer with call quality going in or out ?

It shouldn't. AFAIK voice is still using CDMA.

I am in an extended area and my phone bounces in and out of 4G to 3G. Most of the time I am in 3G and for like 1 hour out the day I get 4G.

Sadly giving up on 4G for now...

I got the phone on day one. The first thing I noticed as I looked at the phone as I walked out the door to my car was the 4g icon. Yay, I am on 4g! Wait, where did the icon go? It's pretty much been that way since I have had it. I keep it on Wifi at home. To put it on 4g, pretty much kills having a MOBILE smartphone. Data is the lifeblood of a smartphone and if it is not there, what's the point.
I have tried every single fix read here (and other forums). Including:
Rev A fix
Hard Reset
Pulling Battery and Sim card and placing back in
I have tried everything but take the phone back and complaining (rooted it).
Per the Verizon coverage map, I am (my house) in a 4g area. On the map, they ask for your address and it say's "I am covered" for 4g. I will note there are a few pockets on the map near my home that is 4g extended. I had been thinking it's just my area. As I would drive around, it would seem to lock onto 4g. But lately, no matter where I go, 4g goes in and out.
When the 4g goes in and out, it is killing all data. It's not like it quickly finds the 3g and resumes data transfer, it just stops. Goes to 1x after a while mostley.
So where I am at right now is that I have forced 3g (using Phone Info app) and now can get reliable mobile data.
Should I be patience with the network and wait it out or should I take this back and ***** (possibly being the device itself)? When does one suppose a possible software fix will be put out for the Thunderbolt?
Hey Man,
I read your post and I am a little confused. In summary is your issue that you dont have great 4G coverage by your house and 3G isnt picking up when 4g drops off?
If thats the case I know you said you tried the Rev A fix but just to double check did you:
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose enable-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
Also have you had verizon try to swap out your sim card and/or called them up and made sure your current sim card is provisioned correctly? If both of these are the case and you tried all the other standard stuff I would go get the phone swapped out for another new device before your time runs out. I had the same problem and the Rev A fix did it for me.

Cincinnati area. Northern suburb. Close to towers and major highways.
Maybe return it and get a new TB?
I didn't have 4G in my home although Verizon's little "insert address" said I would. When I called, however, they said that I was on the border and it's a tough call for now.
When I started driving around to different areas, however, it picked up 4G signal just fine. When driving back into a 3G area it switched with no issue.

My 4G, in Los Angeles, is amazing. But Verizon is just starting to get 4G up and running in many cities right now, cant expect to have great coverage for many more months.

Hey, I have had problems too. I work in the Tri-county area and have GREAT 4G coverage. If you look at the 4G map I am right on the cusp (Maineville) of coverage. In my house, it will rotate between 4g/3g/1x constantly. I downloaded the "LTE OnOFF" app from TeamAndIRC and will toggle 3G only when I'm at home. For some reason I STILL HAVE TO DO THIS even though I'm using wi-fi 100%. When I get to work I toggle to 4G. Doing this, my battery life is exceptional. Before I figured it out I was draining my battery overnight every night. I don't know why the wi-fi requires that 3G only be on but it works.
Almost, but hanging on by a thread....
I am new to Verizon and I picked this up the day after launch. My two weeks are up. I am not in the 4G area (home), but spend most of my waking moment in a 4G area (work). While the phone itself doesn't have a hard time switching between networks on the handheld (I've watched it go from 3 to 4G while driving, I can almost pinpoint the switching area), it does have a hard time when in WiFi Hotspot Mode.
Here's what I mean. I'll be on wireless tether in a 4G zone and then without notice, the phone reports (via Hotspot App) that there is no mobile network ready and there is no data connection icon on the top menu bar. My Xoom is much more reliable on maintaining a connection (3G of course).
This is my only complaint about the 4G network, but it's a small one. The handheld itself is wonderful. I'm keeping both for now.
Check out my speed test on WiFi tether.
Verizon confirmed on the phone with me that there is in fact a bug in HTCs software switching from 4G to 3G when coverage drops. It should be fixed... In the mean time make sure you are using an app from the market to switch to 3G only unless you need 4G.
Other than that, just return it and wait for something else.

LOL. I live straight down 747 in Liberty Twp. (few miles up from Beckett Ridge). Driving around would get me a better connection (4g) at first but lately, as I drive around, it's all over the board. Most the time there is no data icon. I have another app (Phone Info) that has a toggle.
It gets frustrating in that I don't know if the issue is the phone, network or both. Hard to troubleshoot. I suppose I should mosey on down to the mall for anything and see what kind of 4g I get.
I am in almost the same situation as the OP, I have 4G everywhere but my home which I have confirmed with VZW is in a 4G coverage area, not an extended coverage area either. I have narrowed it down to my street exactly. Right after I turn down imy street I lose 4G.
I then once I am home and no I don't mean indoors just at my house I frequently go between nothing, 1x, and 3G(Very Weak) with sporadic data. Will not get 4G back unless I drive around. This is my second device, and second trouble ticket with VZW this time giving more detailed information.
I have also tried every possible solution but unfortunately switching to Rev. A is not a "solution" for me as I am in a 4G area and if I wanted 3G I probably would have just kept my Droid X.
I sure hope this bug if it is one in the software will be fixed with an update or VZW can sort it out if it is my network.

I figured that... so I've been running speed tests in all kinds of areas. Especially anywhere new it in major areas in different cities. I'm just trying out the service so I'm really interested in how fast the network is. I have yet to go above 2mb down even with a 4g signal.

Just because it says 4G it does nto mean you have a solid 4G backbone or infrastructure to support faster. It's the same with the others to. My friends on Sprint & Verizon who live away from the major city centers get 4G signal but speeds like this.
Also most regions for T-Mobile cap the upload at below 100 kbps.

If you will check in settings/about phone/status/ I find that the display is showing 4G but it is on UMTS not HSPDA or HSPDA+ I have yet to see my device show either HSPDA or HSPDA+ even when in VERY strong signal area. My vibrant at least shows HSPDA in those areas even though it is probably not taking full advantage of it. I really like this phone but my Vibrant is getting as fast or faster dl speeds than it is. I am not sure what is up with it, but it looks as if 3G is as good as it might get with my phone at the present time regardless of type and strength of signal in area., I do not know if this is the case with all the devices but it is with mine. I can only hope a software fix is issued. I hope it is software issue and not HW. I really want to keep this phone but will not if issues are not addressed.
It has a LOT to do where you are and saturation of the cell site. There are 2 main factors with cellular data. Your signal to the tower and the tower to the network (or the backhaul).
You can have the strongest reception in the world to the tower but if the connection from the tower to the network is saturated (too many people using it, etc.) your speeds will be capped.
This is exactly why if you use your phone late at night or at odd hours when less people are on the tower, you get faster speeds. No real way around this.
Happens on every carrier I've used including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. I'm in the NYC area so sucks big time for me.

I had the same problem after spending a weekend in Mexico - they replaced my SIM card at the store and it has worked fine ever sense.
I keep cycling through 3g/1X and the network is constantly unavailable, wtf is going on? Im so disappointed with this phone so far.
I dont know if I need to install a new radio? I installed bamfs remix 1.6 and some lean kernel, did I do something wrong? My Incredible never had these issues
Where do you live? That obviously matters, 4g coverage keeps expanding in Chicagoland area, I get 4g almost everywhere I go.
I live in Akron, I get full 4g bars then it drops to nothing, then 1x, then 3G. its unreal
Did you enter your address in the coverage map? Don't know how big Akron 4g coverage is, but again, I rarely ever lose 4g around Chicago and the burbs.
Unrooted BOLT, same issue with connection
I have been seeing the same about the connectivity being bad. I live in burbs of Philadelphia, only about 20 mins from city so i'm not going to pin it on my location..
So you are rooted? I however am not. Just got the thing and wanted to see how it was for a bit before rooting, but now i'm thinking before i root i better make sure the phone isn't crap or i'm not gonna be able to return it.

Pretty much from Mid-County to the Lehigh Valley exit is still 3G in most areas but south towards the city and in the Lehigh Valley itself is all LTE. I travel down from Allentown to Philly regularly and I can tell you this from personal experience.
FYI Lehigh Valley LTE is down right now but I just got out of a meeting with Verizon (less than an hour ago) and they supposedly knew there was some maintenance being done in our area (so that may be the reason for the current outage.) If you switch out of LTE Mode to CDMA LTE auto you should pick up 3G (I'd also enable airplane mode and then disable it to pick up a strong 3G for right now.)
Oh and +1 on the rooted/non-rooted thing. You can flash back to non-rooted stock from a rooted state to send it back. Instructions are in the development forum.

Hi there, thanks for that info i appreciate it. I seem to be missing where htc allows us to switch btwn the 4g and 3g, i searched for the question but didn't get much results. So i'll my noob question right here. Where is that done?
I see under Settings > Wire & networks > Mobile network settings there is a System select option, for "Change the cdma roaming mode", is this where i'm supposed to be? Roaming doesn't seem to be the area i'd think to have to change this particular thing, but i don't see much else in these menus. Please advise or link a thread that i didn't see in my results.
Verizon has a problem with their new eHRPD network.. which is what the Thunderbolt is on by default.. (this allows for 4G + simultaneous talk and browse on 3G).. However, though 4G works OK, 3G doesn't seem to.
In order to tap into Verizon's original 3G network.. dial ##778# on your phone.. go to edit mode (you'll see pop up after you dial that number)..password is 000000 (6 zeros).. go to modem settings.. Rev.A and eHRPD is probably selected there by default.. choose "Enable" option... which will kick it out of eHRPD and then hit menu.. commit changes.. and the phone will reboot. You'll be on Verizon's original 3G network which will work fine.. but you won't have 4G.

AT&T LTE Network Going Live This Sunday

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/att_lte_network_going_live_sunday
The cities included in this initial wave are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Although users in those metro areas will still have very few LTE devices to choose from. Unlike Verizon, which has multiple LTE handsets, AT&T has no phones compatible with the new network. AT&T launched a data stick and a portable hotspot for the LTE network last month. The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.
sweet im in San Antonio for a little while, now for AT&T to get some phones for me to use !!!
Now if they could hurry up and increase the HSPA+ speeds. I'm still only getting 3.5mb download and 1mb upload in downtown Dallas.... iPhone 3gs gets about the same download speed, although only half of the upload speed.
Come to the other side of the Metroplex. Downtown Fort Worth and I am getting 5-7mb down, 1.1-1.3 up. I can't wait for the Holiday with LTE. That will be SO sweet.

As mentioned, you would need a LTE phone first. But, being an hour away from Houston, I wouldn't run out and buy one when they become available. I live in the outskirt of Houston and HSPA+ is non existent at home. In Houston where I work, as posted, I am just now seeing the true benefit of HSPA+. Probably some bottlenecks from ongoing upgrades being freed up, maybe a little congestion as well.

Knowing how AT&T operates, I'd imagine they opened up more bandwidth to the land-based lines to the area first to make sure their LTE debut went well and you're just seeing some of that extra bandwidth.

I'm not as stupid as you. I know when I'm on wifi. Here is the proof.
Here are some from earlier today. The first two were indoors, a large metal building with offices above on the second floor. The first run was bad, only 2800kbps, but I did hit 4916kbps on the second. I then went outdoors and tested a lil slower than yesterday, but not by much, 6485-7767kbps. I know we can't put too much stock in the Speed Test app, but there is some consistency and I'm getting much higher runs than I had been. Also, it seems to be reading my wifi at home with some accuracy.

Then why do you make statements like LTE network is improving the throughout of a HSPA+ phone on the 3G stack?
"at&t 4G? lol. It's more like 0.4G"

Show me where I made that statement. I stated that since the LTE launch, my data speeds have suddenly increased and I'm finally seeing true hspa+, and that is a fact. I provided a couple of possible reasons for this, as someone else cited a possibility as well. I know what you saw. You saw the hosted by Comcast in the screenshot. Lol. Anybody with half a brain would know that there would have been a wifi icon in the status bar if I was on wifi. Next time you open your mouth, try not to put your foot in it. Your little signature says it all. Just because you are in a crummy area, doesn't mean it is like that everywheres.
Check my screenshot of prior tests and tell me if you see any improvement compared to yesterday and today. LOL.

I'm good. I just don't appreciate someone implying I'm either stupid or I'm a liar. It certainly isn't inconceivable that while AT&T was building the LTE network here in Houston, they were improving the backhaul for hspa+. Whatever the source of the improvement, I'm thrilled to see true hspa+ speeds. It is something I never expected to see with my Inspire.

The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.[/QUOTE]
No westcoast cities in the works??
They finally turned on hspa+ in okc ok I'm seeing 7-9 dl constanly ul still around 1 but better signal to at my use to get 10- 30 percent now 70 -95 crazy how just one day they just flipped it on finaly I use to leave my phone on edge as o could surf internet faster that way not anymore

No CDMA/LTE option

So i havent really been paying that much attention to LTE, since i live out where it is not available yet. But today, i am working in Atlanta, where i know there is LTE coverage from Sprint, and my phone never connects to LTE and it does not connect to 4g in alot of places where my Epic did. So i realized that in my mobile network options, I have an option for CDMA/4g, but I do not have an option for CDMA/LTE. I called Sprint and of course they want me to take it to a service and repair center, but my phone is rooted. I am afraid all they are going to say is me rooting the phone is why it is not working and that I should not have done that, and probably void my warranty. Does anyone else have this problem and know a fix for it? Please let me know if you do!
Thanks!
I was under the impression that it would automatically connect to LTE when it was available. I haven't seen/heard of a way to toggle LTE. you're wondering if something is wrong because you were not able to connect to LTE in an area which is supposed to have LTE? Are certain that LTE was available?

It is my understanding that it does auto connect to LTE if you have it set to CDMA/LTE or Automatic. I am in an area where I know LTE is available because i checked the coverage map, and called to verify as well. Also, when connected to LTE, i thought i had heard that instead of saying 4g, there is actually a symbol that says LTE. I was also told by the Sprint rep, that my option should read CDMA/LTE instead of CDMA/4g.

Pretty sure it says 4g when connected to lte. There is no wimax chip so lte is there 4g

That makes sense to me, because that would explain why I dont get 4g in some spots where I used to get it with my Epic. But, I still dont think it is correct, I am showing 4g right now and my speed is 5.5mb down. LTE should be higher than that shouldnt it? Also, that still doesnt explain why I would have the CDMA/4g option instead of having CDMA/LTE option.
Can anyone confirm on the Photon Q that when connected to LTE is shows an LTE icon, and that your option in mobile networks does say CDMA/LTE?

I would have to agree, I don't think there's anything in the Android framework to show "LTE" as a radio status... It should show 4g.
I say this, and I've never seen the phone connected to LTE/4G.
Also, OP - I'm sure this goes without saying, but you seem to think that because you had Wimax there before, you'll have LTE there now - that is certainly not going to be the case. In my area we have great Wimax service, but we're not even on the roadmap for LTE from Sprint...
So just because you had 4g on Sprint there before does not mean you'll automatically have 4g there! I hope their rollout is pretty aggressive, but obviously it's a heavy capital cost.
CDMA/4G is what you want it set to for LTE. Also, not all of Atlanta is lit up yet...maybe like 30-40%. If it exists where you are it will connect.

The map that i am looking at on Sprint's website shows basically 100% of Atlanta, and much of the outskirts and suburbs as well having LTE coverage. It looks like most of about a 50 mile radius of Atlanta is lit up, but I only get coverage for a very small percentage of the area that their map is showing that supposedly gets LTE service. So either my phone is messed up, or they are full of sh**
My option in settings says cdma/4g.

The icon is 4g on the phone, I've seen at least one video review of the phone somewhere where it shows 4g on the screen. And the others are correct, 4g *is* LTE on this phone in terms of the network settings.
I would look at this forum (on another website, www.s4gru.com), it shows all the current released markets and the percent complete. The Atlanta market is only 30% complete so you probably half to be in the right spot to get 4G and in the perfect spot to get over 10 mbps. But as the days (weeks, months etc) go on it will get better. I'm in Rochester NY and we are in the 3rd round for release which wont see any LTE until Summer 2013.....I think Sprint's completion plan of end of 2013 is not going to work out...but I am hoping that Sprint proves me wrong.

This seems to be more accurate than Sprints site. That is what pisses me off, you can go to their site and check coverage, and according to it, and their reps on the phone, LTE should be available now, all over Atlanta. That is obviously not the case though. Thanks for the link

Nope, it says "4G" both on the indication icon and on the Mobile Data connection options page.

"4G" is just dumb marketing-speak anyway.
