Hi there people of all sort !
So today my question is... have any of you gotten to use the Android Beam in ICS?
I have never gotten a chance to. Nobody I know with an Android has ICS. And nobody wants to root to be able to flash a custom ROM for it either -_- (they suck).
So here I have this great amazing feature that supposedly let's me transfer files almost instantly that I never get to use! How great is that?
How useful is Android Beam really if nobody can use it, and how many times have you used it and do you use it. Do you prefer it over Bluetooth, Gmail, or Texting links (etc)?
Nexus S - CyberGR Hybrid ICS (5), Matrix Kernel (15)
I've tried it for the first time with my cousin yesterday and I found out that it doesn't send files between phones, but rather it shares the content that is currently being viewed.
ie. Beaming......
Market apps (it will bring the receipient to the marketplace where they can download the app)
Youtube videos (will load up the video on the recipients phone)
Web pages (will load the webpage on the recipients phone)
Contacts (will add the contact to the recipients phone)
It is pretty cool, but IMO it would be much cooler if you could send files that way........so to answer your question if It's useful I would say yes, but only in certain cases when your sharing information that would be a pain in the ass for the other person to find. So like instead of "Oh have you seen that video with the dog on youtube, no , well you gotta search funny dog...blah blah blah", you can just beam them the video!
I've tried Android Beam on my Nexus S I9023 with ICS between 2 other Galaxy Nexus and it would only work with one of them and only intermittently. Very hit and miss.
Bit of a gimmick really it seems so far. I do look forward to being able to use Google Wallet in Australia though...
Ah I see I see... Well who agrees that somebody should make a mod so that we can send files through Android Beam ? Otherwise I'm finding that Android Beam is really not all that great...
Its basically Bump.

Tried it with a SGSII and my Nexus S 4G. SGSII was running Gingerbread and a Contact beam successfully transferred
NFC on my Nexus is off 99.9% of the time. Lol! Out of the few hundred people in my contact list, only 1 I know is an Android modder! ):
I bet no one knows what NFC is when I ask them about it.
The thing about Apple is that they may not be the first to incorporate the tech into their phone, but when they do, it becomes revolutionary. At least in Singapore it's that way.
Disclaimer: I love Nexus.
Bought mine 6 months prior to Galaxy Nexus *facepalm* Shall wait for the next Nexus then. Random rant. If you look at up, you will see that I have no one else to rant to. ):
QUICK
This is the quickest way to transfer info... I've used it with my NS4G to a coworker's Galaxy Nexus & it's very smooth every time.
I use it to swap contact info with my wife's phone. It sucks it can't send photos or videos. That's a big fail IMO.
Okay, so using my dad's tab 10.1 2 today, I noticed it can no longer search anything but the web with the Google quick search bar! Looking on the market, I see that the app no longer shows up. I know Google had to change some stuff concerning this for the galaxy nexus, since apple sued Samsung over it, but did the galaxy tab also get a "fix"? This makes the Google search bar essentially worthless, and I could happily kill Tim cook right now! (Alright, I would prefer to kill Steve Jobs, but he already died ) Anyone else know about this?

GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk needs to be replaced with an older version for it to work again ( pull out from an old back up or a previous ROM).
Think the ten inch version was hit , not sure about the 7 as its too small to be compared to an iPad/iPhone.. Some of the patents were about software so a lot of Samsungs tech was included. Stay up to date with the case as Im pretty sure an appeal is being made and its all subject to change.
One of the benefits of using a custom ROM is no sneaky updates from Samsung. Looks like Apple is going to take on Google next , Those mother ****ers want Android dead ! Gonna get real messy lol. :cyclops:
There are probably a few other threads like this, but I didn't really see any so I decided to start this one. Just to make it clear, these things are purely a wishlist, not rumors, and some of these things aren't even to be expected. Just purely for wishful thinking and conversation.
I'll start with the things that bother me most about Jelly Bean.
- Better Multi-Tasking & App Integration: If you're coming from iOS, then what we have is probably easy to live with, but its buggy. For instance, apps seem to get "confused" on what's really opened where. For instance, if I share a picture to Instagram from the gallery or Dropbox, and i go home afterwards, opening the respective app will bring me to Instagram, and opening Instagram will bring me somewhere completely different inside off Instagram. It's like Instagram is running twice. What Google needs to work on is actually having Android switch apps, instead of opening it inside of the other one.
- Rotation: I'm surprised I've never seen this posted anywhere else, but if you use an iOS device and you rotate it, the transition from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) is smooth. extremely smooth. don't give me wrong, Android rotates smoothly too, but the transition doesn't "connect" . Because what Android does is rotate the whole operating system (think of rotating a windows pc), whereas iOS rotates just the UI. The operating system itself doesn't seem to rotate. Ex: If you watched a YouTube video on an iOS device in landscape, when it's over or you go back, the landscape video just slides away with the app in portrait "behind" it. If you've seen it before you'd know what I mean. Android should do this also. Instead of rotating the whole OS, just have the UI rotate.
- Update Fragmentation: This issue will probably never be resolved, because google has almost no say so in what manufactures do with android, but 4.2 is out right? So why are 4.1 devices still shipping? Android has a nav bar now right? So why are devices still shipping with capacitive buttons and menu keys? This is why some devs haven't implemented the 3 dot overflow button in some apps I suppose. Also manufactures are abandoning devices that are still capable of running the latest versions of Android. For instance, the HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) , HTC Desire HD (AT&T Inspire 4G) , and the Galaxy S 1 (which was basically a Nexus S) should've all been updated to AT LEAST 4.0. The updates for the S1 should have stopped when the Nexus S stopped receiving updates actually.
- Skins / OEM UI's - Another issue that will probably never be resolved. Skins were completely understandable up until 4.0 in terms of looks. Android is now a pretty good looking OS and doesn't need a skin. Also, if google were to implement most of the CM features, manufactures wouldn't even need to add features. (If it were up to me, all phones would come with CM, lol.) Also, why they choose to replace built in applications that are never updated is beyond me. If everyone kept the skinning to a minimum, we could have timely updates.
App Unification: I've seen this one so many times. Apps like Google Voice/Messenger/G Mail/ Etc. are all separate apps, but preform the same action, or somehow work together. Much like Google Earth, Maps, and Street View. Why not combine all of the similar apps, and save space and confusion.
Responsiveness / Smoothness: I'm gonna keep this one short, because Android gets better and better with each update, but it could be better. Swipe your finger across something like a webpage quickly and watch it follow behind your finger, whereas on other OS's the page will "stick" to your finger.
The "Back" Button: Something I'm sure we all get confused by at least twice a day. It's supposed to bring us to the previous screen until we get to the home screen, but at times, it'll take you places in apps you've never been, skips screens you've been too, etc. Basically, only half of the time it works at advertised.
Auto Brightness Calibration: Everyone's preferences for auto brightness is different, so why not be able to adjust how bright or dim you want it to be?
There are more things that I'd like to see in android, but at the moment this is all i can think about. Feel free to reply saying something you'd like to see in Android 4.3 / 5.
x2 battery performance > it's enough for me now
Some nice suggestions, but yeah Android needs a culture change where a phone continues to receive updates up until the updates surpass the phones capabilities. It sucks to see good phones left behind, I do understand the custom ROM argument but for everyone this isn't ideal

Excellent background process contro that should not eat too much battery easily and touchscreen responsiveness this is the only thing i expect currently.
Everything sounds pretty good except the on screen keys. No thanks.

I think the best way to solve the OEM issue is for samsung, htc, and other manufacturers to make apps which are independent of any framework so that it can be easily updated to the latest android because porting an app is easier than a whole framework
Increase the battery by 10

They need to get rid of the slow and bloated java garbage in the core system apps. Google spouts about optimizing this and streamlining that to improve performance. They prelink the core libraries to further improve performance. And then they go and use a crappy, slow virtual machine language for most of the system.
Java is fine for apps in the app store for developers that dont know c/c++. It should not be used as extensively in the core of android as it is.

I can't think of anything because I fail at imagination so ill just say things I want from skinned androids that should be added to stock.
1. Smart dialer. Pressing numbers should look up contacts like t9.
2. Battery percentage in status bar. I don't know if this is due to patents that aapl has but Samsung and lg get away with having it.
3. Able to remove home screens. I only use 4-5 and I want the ability to remove the rest like every oem skin.
4. Power saver. Battery life is very important and android needs a way to make it last longer.
5. Facebook contact sync. Not sure why this is not allowed on stock Android.
These are my top 5. As for something new I would like them to improve on giving apps permission. I think every app should ask you when you first start it if it can be allowed to use your gps and if it can be allowed to send push notifications. It's the only thing I like on ios and it'll help with a lot of notification spam.
Also, why does the new gmaps look better on ios than on android. That's not acceptable.

My biggest problem is the update process of 3rd party android manufacturers. Android 4.2 has been out for a couple months yet my Galaxy SII was only recently updated to 4.1. I know it is more than capable of running 4.2 as I'm running aokp/cm10.1 right now so I'm wondering why? Even the SIII is still on 4.1 and if a couple of guys (aokp/cm10.1/paranoid android) could port within a month or two then why can't major companies who have hundreds of employees. Just look at what the paranoid android team has accomplished with P. A. 3.0 it's like a new version of android, all done within a few months. That said, I like to have the latest updates on my phone so with this being my first Android phone, I think I might bypass anything that isn't a nexus. Google or somebody needs to put their foot down

Yeh. I definitely have to agree with the touchscreen's responsiveness. Aside from that, battery performance really needs to be optimized.

I've never understood why everyone wants oem skins to go away. If that happened every phone would be the same so there would be no incentive for say Samsung or HTC to even make phones. The skins are what makes android. Why would I buy a nexus versus a HTC pure android phone?

I think from now android should work on its AI and Virtual Memory to makes itself so smooth and powerful !
i saw a video clip that compare 2 powerful cellphone Galaxy S III and IPhone 5
in first look Galaxy S III has 4 core and IPhone has only 2 but IPhone is powerful enough to defeat its opponent !
Why ? there's one , only one reason to say the IPhone is too powerful and it's its OS !
IOS is very powerful than android !
if u don't satisfy just go and do a search about it !
i want android to work on it's AI !!
I realize this is stupid but...
With the androidx86 project (that I think is KILLER!!!) I'd like to see them either implement desktop support or do things that would entice more people to get involved. How bad ass would x86 running and then being able to use your phone as a second screen be? Or as remote access? And since they are both natively running (relatively speaking) it would be a real remote desktop as compared to jittery/almost remote desktop on a phone.

the thing about them though, is they're future proof in a way. look how the menu key is becoming obsolete, but it's still going to be on certain devices no matter what.

imho, i think manufactures want to release their new flagship with the newest OS to attract customers (which is really doesn't) . our devs here shows what can be done. with a whole team like HTC/Samsung/Etc has, we should all see updates within a month or less. devs can do it on their own, so why can't they?

i like skins, don't get me wrong. i have a note ii, and i miss sense daily. they just over do it sometimes. i personally get very annoyed by touchwiz, and you have much more freedom on AOSP. i think apps should just be backward compatible all around.
You say the you would like to see the back button "fixed". I have never got why people always say this. For me anyway, the back button has always performed how I would expect (take me back to the previous screen). Don't get me wrong, android has plenty of flaws, but I don't think this is one of them.

One of the biggest reasons I only stick with Google backed Android devices (Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, etc.). It's the device manufacturers and the phone companies that hold up the updates. I've heard numbers where HTC can get the update out 3-4 months after Google releases it, but Verizon could add another 6 months to that timeline. Not quite sure what the exact reasons are for the delay =(
Considering some of the Google Now features, I'd love to see Google buy/license Tasker so that it becomes and integrated part of Android, at least for some key items:
WIFI, GPS, Ringer settings, Sync settings, etc. Those features would be amazing.
It would also be great if I could say: "Turn on WIFI/GPS/Autobrightness, Sync Calendar, Turn off ringer, etc" while in Google Now and have the action executed.
I have found a few good ones but when you really look there is actually very little available still, and stop putting the same app in different categories to make it look like there is more there than there really is grrrrr

Oh yeah, there's no reason whatsoever this watch needs Android... None... Just build an ecosystem from scratch. Again...
Tizen = Samsung grab for control.
Give it up Samsung your stupid OS will not make it. Give-it-up.
Too much negativity on here. There are already more apps for Gear 2 than there were for the Galaxy Gear. Also, many more should be coming with the contest for developers that Samsung has coming up. Remember that the iPhone did not even have apps on it at first and that Jobs said they were not needed. He was wrong, and apps are necessary now, but they will come. Give it a little more time.
You're right. Negativity is not good. I really didn't see the need for Tizen though... Samsung really did it's customers a disservice. To say that the OS was not important demeaned our intelligence.
EDIT: Chose to say nothing at all...

Yup I'm kinda regretting this purchase. It was gimmicky for a week or two but I'm not finding it to useful really. If there was a bunch of apps it would be different. If Samsung goes the Tizen route with their phones I will go back to HTC or LG. Great devices but Tizen blows. Seems like nobody wants to develop for it.

Now that the Gear 1 is going Tizen, I sure hope they get on the ball and convert all of their Android apps to Tizen. They should have done that before they ever put Tizen on a watch to begin with.
Hardly any of the Android apps for the GG1 worked anyway. Notifications work great, but I liked the watch styler feature of the original Gear and the ability to side load Android apps to the watch that made sense. I flashed Tizen to my Gear 1 last night. I was under the impression it would bring consistency across all 3 devices (GG, G2, G2N). Still not consistent as original Gear owners (even though running same OS) still don't have access to same apps or user experience.

At this point, the one I miss the most as I used it daily no my Pebble is Evernote.
Heck just some simple list syncing app where I can send my shopping or todo tasklist from my phone/computer to the watch and tick items off as I complete them would have been ok until we get a proper Evernote client as promised in the marketing.
I'm planning to buy either a Huawei Watch or a Samsung Gear S2 Classic soon, and the one piece of information I seem to be unable to find is a decent list of what apps are available for each?
Based on watching youtube videos I really prefer the interface on the S2, seems far more intuitive, but I don't want to find myself missing apps that I would find useful...
Anyone got one and find anything missing or know where I can find a list - google is failing me! Having come from Windows Phone to Android recently I dont want to back myself into an app hole again

So that list is really handy, thanks, but does seem to be 6months old...
Also, it doesnt help me by comparing to what Android Wear has - I havent used either, so I don't know what i'm missing out on if you know what i mean...
e.g. can i do turn by turn directions on wrist with google maps on either device? Can i get Waze running on either device? That article mentions e-mails and messaging with Samsung apps on their phones, what about on my Z5? Do i need to find a third party in that case?
I've updated that Gear s2 list on and off for the last six months, so while it's not comprehensive, it's up to date as far as it goes. I don't have a google wear watch to compare, but unlike Samsung, google let's you browse android wear apps on the web: https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/ANDROID_WEAR
It's generally agreed that android wear has way more apps than Tizen (and that apple has even more apps than Wear.) There's not a lot of agreement about how important that fact is. Some smartwatch users stick mostly to notifications, which are good for things like getting messages and for quick, simple replies; saves you from digging your phone out of your pocket all the time. Others care more about specific apps. The general feeling seems to be that the Gear S2 has maybe the best hardware and interface (and many like its looks), but that apps for the Gear S2 are a weak link. So, for example, the Gear S2 has a couple of options for turn-by-turn directions, one that comes with the watch called Here maps, and another 3rd party app called Gear Navigator; both are a little funky in my experience. Over on Android Wear, I'm guessing you'll have many more options to try from. On the other hand, the only circumstance in which I've found watch-based turn by turn directions useful is on a bicycle; in a car, the tiny screen just doesn't match up to having a full-sized smartphone screen on your dash. (I'll have to let someone else with experience let you know about what works and what doesn't with a Z5.)
Thanks for that. I had an MS band before and basically used it for notifications and telling the time!
I guess I'm worried that there will be some app I realise I want and can't get on Tizen , which knowing how that felt on WP is a concern...
But as you say, Gear S2 classic is the best looking smart watch out there (imho) for the price (huawei is nearly £100 more) so might be worth the shot since the interface appeals much more...
Hopefully someone with one and a Z5(or anything but a Samsung) can tune in and tell me how crippling it is to not be on Samsung's infrastructure
I've just sold my Huawei Watch and am currently using a s2 classic, my thoughts....
never installed any apps on my Huawei barring watch faces and an app to ajdust screen on time, all I needed and I guess wanted was the stock apps.
Gear s2 is IMO a better watch and the interface is so intuitive, of it could swap S voice for Google then I'd be even happier , so far the s2 does all I need and I love the extra run time I get compared to android wear.
I also have a gear S running biktors wear port so I still have option to use android wear whenever I choose.
BTW I got my s2 classic on eBay for £110 so this is based on my thoughts and this price point.

It should be no problem getting the S2 to link to a Z5, I am running on a Nexus 6 with a CM-based custom ROM with no problems. Apparently, you can do more with an S2 and a Samsung phone but I am not missing anything I want.
I try to keep Google out of as much of my life as possible so the idea that Tizen is not integrated into the Google infra-structure is a plus for me. I know I am in the minority but you couldn't pay me to use Android Wear (or Apple for that matter).

Well, despite leaning towards the Gear I just got a deal on Prime Day for the Huawei for under £200 so have sumped for that. Figure if I don't like it I can probably break even on selling on anyway

I think Tizen will improve in future and will add some best stuffs like android. I read here (Tizen vs android difference - .mindxmaster.com/2017/01/samsung-tizen-vs-google-android-compaision.html) Tizen is using HTML 5 apps and has better flexibility than android. Android has lots of apps in Google play store, which is an advantage over Tizen.
