Come on Samsung!!!!!!!!! Where are all your apps? - Samsung Gear 2

I have found a few good ones but when you really look there is actually very little available still, and stop putting the same app in different categories to make it look like there is more there than there really is grrrrr

I agree samsung need to tidy there categories up it was the same for the first gear TIDY UP

Oh yeah, there's no reason whatsoever this watch needs Android... None... Just build an ecosystem from scratch. Again...
Tizen = Samsung grab for control.
Give it up Samsung your stupid OS will not make it. Give-it-up.

Too much negativity on here. There are already more apps for Gear 2 than there were for the Galaxy Gear. Also, many more should be coming with the contest for developers that Samsung has coming up. Remember that the iPhone did not even have apps on it at first and that Jobs said they were not needed. He was wrong, and apps are necessary now, but they will come. Give it a little more time.

You're right. Negativity is not good. I really didn't see the need for Tizen though... Samsung really did it's customers a disservice. To say that the OS was not important demeaned our intelligence.

EDIT: Chose to say nothing at all...

Yup I'm kinda regretting this purchase. It was gimmicky for a week or two but I'm not finding it to useful really. If there was a bunch of apps it would be different. If Samsung goes the Tizen route with their phones I will go back to HTC or LG. Great devices but Tizen blows. Seems like nobody wants to develop for it.

Now that the Gear 1 is going Tizen, I sure hope they get on the ball and convert all of their Android apps to Tizen. They should have done that before they ever put Tizen on a watch to begin with.

Hardly any of the Android apps for the GG1 worked anyway. Notifications work great, but I liked the watch styler feature of the original Gear and the ability to side load Android apps to the watch that made sense. I flashed Tizen to my Gear 1 last night. I was under the impression it would bring consistency across all 3 devices (GG, G2, G2N). Still not consistent as original Gear owners (even though running same OS) still don't have access to same apps or user experience.

At this point, the one I miss the most as I used it daily no my Pebble is Evernote.
Heck just some simple list syncing app where I can send my shopping or todo tasklist from my phone/computer to the watch and tick items off as I complete them would have been ok until we get a proper Evernote client as promised in the marketing.

Gear 2 to run Tizen !?!?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/02/18/samsung-gear-smartwatch-tizen-android/5583023/
Hmm, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I know with Android we can root and flash custom ROM's, will we have the same capability with Tizen? Is there a robust dev community that will develop ROM's and apps for Tizen, especially for something specialized like a smartwatch?
I'm definitely bummed if this is true and Samsung decides to go this way. I was patiently waiting for the Gear 2 with my wallet open, but this may change my mind if I can't tinker with it.
My stock touchwiz rom didn't run anything google related other than android. No google services. How is that a valid argument?
I don't think I'll mind if they do go down their own path, as long as all the features we want are there
Makes sense on one hand, but still hard to see them moving away from the already established android ecosystem
gear 2 is doomed. when is the last time anything not android succeeded?

I know nothing about Tizen, in fact, just googled it to see what it was. Sounds like a Samsung mobile Linux based OS?? I'm not sure I like the sounds of going away from android either if that is what the Gear 2 is gonna run.
A full HTML5 OS ! YOU SAY THIS IS A BAD THING !?
That is going to be EPIC !!
This is similar to what ubuntu are trying to do with there phones..
I just HOPE Samsung dont ridicule it with road blocks and encryption and allow us as users to tinker with the OS !
HTML5 OS = Javascript coding = Very easy to program !
I come from a web development background, so this is right in my ball park..
If you think you've seen cool stuff with null_ on the gear 1, wait till I get my hands on the gear 2.
Interesting indeed !
Thanks for that info fomey - interesting, and hopeful.

I think of most web programs as boring, simple and not worth my time.
Thinking of anything on Facebook.
It is my understanding if you want any deep and complex programs you need access to the hardware layer.
Could be wrong heard for years how great HTML5 will be, maybe its time is now.
Besides I own many Android Apps this kind of commits me to Android.
Guess we all see next week, FYI I believe if Samsung really wants to sell Smartwatches the OS the watch is running is not as important as selling a device that will work fully on as many smartphones as possible. Compatible with only Samsung devices originally only the Note 3 are they crazy?
My bet is these rumours are just that rumours.
That article did not leave me with a happy feeling at all. Html5 does sound very nice for coding but the rest of it doesn't sit well.
There are already devices running android with no Google services ( kindle fire ). What do we do? Stuff Google on there anyway, because we like what they offer.
Samsung appears to want to keep there stuff even further from Google by switching OS. My gut feeling is that, if they want Google out of it so badly, they are going to try VERY hard to keep these watches locked down.
Secondly, all our android apps are not going to be available, so we'll be dependent on Samsung for everything, at least initially. Well, maybe we can hope that's where the html5 will be very attractive.
My guess is that if tizen really happens, one will still be able to flash android.
I'm somewhat excited to see it, as I've had conversations with the main ui developer in the past (rasterman of enlightenment). Very curious and guardedly hopeful.

I believe you would have access to the hardware layer with tizen apps... Otherwise that would just be weird and really restrictive on what you could code.
We shall see !
Working with simple javascript coding would be soooooooo nice, at the moment SMALI IS THE DEVIL I TELL YOU.
It would be a themers dream.
I wonder if this is why we haven't been seeing any new apps for the gear?

Thanks for the news i think it will be awesome running apps on html 5 that would be the coolest thing for development, please sammy share the complete source :good:
The plot thickens: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/po...e-in-multiple-flavors-including-tizen-1226006
Maybe we will see multiple versions, I hope one of them keeps Android. Next week will be very interesting.
Tizen is samsungs way into the market. Im sure it will be locked down tighter than knox and are bootloader though. But it has more potential for sure.
My question would be the compatibility with Android devices (such as the S5, which I will be getting)... and also apps for it would be VERY limited at the beginning. Right...? lol (Not a Dev so I wouldn't really know)
A bit of an aside: I get the feeling Tizen will stick around and slowly grow, but not at the expense of their large android base.. It can work for the gear, as it's an accessory device, but their smartphone market will be a different story..
China is a great example of a market where Google doesn't have a huge hold on... Tizen might work there, as there may not be a dependence on Google... A Tizen device partnered with one of their top search engines Baidu or Sohu might work... they could develop the platform, perfect it with a potential user base of millions; emerging markets might work well too, as Samsung could make low cost devices, and then generate some revenue from their own app store for paid apps..
Based on my observations of increasing integration of the Samsung app store on their android devices, I always wondered if all of that was in the works for if they strayed away from using Google's licensed model... Tizen seems to further that suspicion..

This is my question as well? One with think that with Samsung have pretty much ALL android devices, that they would want this to be cross compatible. Whether that's possible I have no idea, it's not like Tizen is just an overlay of android like Touchwiz, guess we'll see?

Is buying the new gear 2 worth it?

Tell me what do you like about it, what you would like to have been different. And the best features. It suckss completely that tizen is running on gear 2 rather than android really disappointed and the software itself is making me not want to upgrade. Love android. Tizen has no apps. No development. It's a baby without its training wheels. They should have released tizen on the gear neo not gear 2. I don't want to shed $300 just for a couple new things. The watch itself is nice but I'm more interested under the hood and knowing it's running tizen. Makes it feel like like a 2L car I want a V8 powerhouse.

All I can say is give it time. The G2 is my first watch and it's fine with me. It makes me not pickup my phone as much and that in it of itself is a win. I would like to have a keyboard to respond better than templates.
What kind of apps are people wanting on these things....I screen is so small I wonder what would be exciting to use.
You can speak to it to reply what you want to say rather than use the templates.

This!
I have no desire to browse the web, play games, or watch movies on the Gear. That's what my Note 3 is for!!! I managed to get a keyboard on the Galaxy Gear, but it took more time to get my message correct on the Galaxy Gear than if I just pulled out my phone and used it. Plus the Tablet Talk app that enabled that functionality killed the battery (+ all the screen-on time). I currently have about 30 text templates to use for responding to text messages. If any of those don't fit the bill, then fine, I'll reach for my phone when I feel like responding.
The only app I can think that would be nice is some type of navigation integration with Maps. And even then I would only expect it to show me my next turn... not the entire map/route.

Yeah...some map integration would be nice, but out of the box it does all I expect it to. I think once the Fleksy keyboard is released it'll be perfect. I love being able to get home, sit my phone down, walk freely and still be connected w/out it. I dont have but about 10 templates, but as I run into different situations I'll add more.

All this Tizen hate going around is just going to keep developers from even bothering to develop. Why don't you just take the Gear 2 for a test drive. If it's not worth it, then return it. But just stop with all the hate mongering, it's not helping anyone.
And for the record, even Google turned its back on full Android for smartwatches. They came up with Android Wear, and from what I've seen (video) Android Wear is a minimalist OS geared toward simple notifications. TizenExperts.com clearly mentions (and seems to encourage) flashing custom ROMs for the Gear 2.

!! Votes for Android Wear on the Gear 2!!

Hi Guys,
i just bought the Gear 2 a couple of days ago.
its a nice device, good hardware but bad software.
2 days later i saw The Gear Live with Android Wear and Google Now! on Google I/O,
Somehow i feel ripped-Off by Samsung.
the S Voice is really bad Compared to Google Now!
If you feel the same. And want to see Android Wear Ported to the Gear 2 please leave a Vote And Reply.
How many thread have to be made and clutter this section . Read before you post it's a rule. You bought it 2 days ago then you can take it back . And buy the gear live . Simple . I mean it's only been a day since wear was announced. In 2 days you haven't had time to experience tizen your just following everyone else who complain about it. Tizen is a good OS . Not for everyone but is good. I myself wouldn't mind wear but in good time .

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. How old are you? Android Wear was announced months ago and it has also been published in many media circles that Samsung was also on board starting perhaps 1 month ago to release their Android Wear variant.
First of all the Gear is a lot more nuanced for anyone to say that they've gotten the gist of understanding it's full potential in a mere 2 days. It's a new platform hence it's more than meets the eye . That's like me buying the Pebble knowing that it is extremely rudimentary in it's functionality and saying after 1 day that it's garbage. I'd still need at least a week to say that. That is why paid reviewers never release their final draft before spending sufficient time with any new device. (From what I've heard the Pebble is very buggy not well built. No Siri in sight. Yet the media raves about it gathering all the lemmings to spread the gospel.) Samsung has really dared to innovate well ahead of anybody else. They should be given a little credit & respect.
The Svoice is excellent for texting, reminders, calling my contacts, note taking with about a 95% accuracy rate. The media player is phenomenal and when it's combined with the free app Launcher from the gear store I can't imagine a better setup. Notifications are superb. Battery life is great. Camera is very useful when I need to take a visual note of a label or whatever. Customization of the navigation layout. Not to mention the developing platform of apps I use on a regular basis that are amazing when it comes to adding awesome functionality (Omelet app to share quick pics with my wife who owns a gear as well. Fleksy to type messages when it's too noisy)
To the statement of voiding your warranty in 2 days. Who does that? The Tizen SDK is there for any one to use. It's fairly simple and doesn't make you an expert on a platform because you've written a basic app. The list of things that you've given is an inherent part of any device like an Iphone or any smart device. I would argue that because you've done those things on those platforms doesn't make you an engineer.
So I ask you go back and watch the Google I/O event again and keep in mind that the Android Wear has ripped off many features from the Gear. Even the hardware requirements are mimicked from the Samsung Gear and Galaxy platform. I honestly sorta like it myself (the Wear Op system). However navigating that thing is gonna be a nightmare. There is room for improvement on it as well just like the Gear's Tizen and credit must be given when it's due. Kaygeee it takes these companies a long time to get these things right. Enjoy the times we're living in. Imagine how awful the 70's, 80's and 90's were when in came to tech. 300 Bucks is not a lot to spend in order to be on the cutting edge.
Like the previous commentor to your statement said, return your device back to wherever you bought it or sell it on Ebay/Craigslist. I for one am going to see how things develop with Android Wear, however I can proudly say that I've enjoyed everyday spent with my Samsung Gear. If I ultimately move on to the Android Wear devices after 3 months of Gear use. I like many other happy Gear owners have no regrets. What other capable powerhouse smart watches were released in bulk within the past year? Exactly!

I have to agree with the above. Android wear looks like there is almost too much going on. Navigation looks cumbersome. I like being able to tell my device to turn off by pressing a button. I had the original gear and that side button drove me nuts. Having the home button on the front of gear 2 is nice. I can run my watch for 3 days easy taking calls emails texts playing games. Shorting pics of computer tags for work. Would I like to see wear come to gear 2. I'm on the fence. Would I try it ? Yes. Will I go out and get the new watch? No. I feel gear 2 is better built and worth the 300$ gear live isn't worth the 200$

I'm no expert... but from my point of view the Room for improvement on the Tizen S-voice is a lot.
compared to Google Now! which comes on a similar device released only couple of months after Gear 2 release
and why would i imagine the 70's, 80's and 90's when we live in 2014 my friend times change fast
like i said its good... but is it good enough with the young Tizen on it? how would it be with Android wear on it? is that going to bring out more functional potential.
I don't want to sell it. ill keep it around and wait for more improvement. or a chance to Port Android wear to it.
But in the moment i want to know how much people want to see The Android Wear on the Gear 2. i think I'm not the only one, thats why i made this Poll.

I sold my gear 2 and bought a gear live for the simple reason that I want a fully functional smart watch to work with Cyanogenmod and not have to rely on the TouchWiz framework, I did enjoy my time with the gear 2 though on Omega rom and if android wear did come out for the gear 2 then I would probably cancel my order but until it's done it's android wear from here on out so I have the flexibility to use it on any rom I choose.

The main problem with it, and any other Android wear watchs is the 1 day use bit. Sure it's got an always on display but if they're advertising one day use, it probably means less.
Holding for for now until early reports from early adopters.
I like Google Now, but I never use it on my phone. The Gear 2 is giving me all the info I need with a 2.5-3 day battery.
I do also use the cam so gonna need support for that too.
---------- Post added at 09:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:39 AM ----------
Also gonna need it to play music from device (For gym), and keep all the health integration.
I just wish I had hangouts on the tizen, and also the ability to use keyboard to reply for those odd rare occasions i need to (so far never but would be a nice to have).
Facebook app to view whats going on and eBay would also be nice.
As of now Tizen is better than Android Wear because of App availability AND UI. Also if your talking about Google now and S-Voice they BOTH need Internet connections to work. Which here in the Philippines is not available everywhere. So I don't really care about that.
I guess yes Samsung will port Android Wear to the Gear 2 but they'll still modify it so it will still work as it works right now.

Any kind of voice command is useless to me, it makes you look like a douche in public and if you're not in public just use your phone.
Tizen is growing on me, the music player is good / fine for gym, has cool health sensors and heart rate etc. It works for how i intend to use it.
If i get caught short while in the house away from phone i can still take call on device, dont think talking is on the Wear agenda.
Camera I also use often, very often. It's ideal for a quick snap.
The 3rd party apps are trash, and the forcing to use messaging instead of hangouts is whack, but as I don't intend to reply i just wish the notification showed the whole message.
The music player control is also way better on Tizen, everything on one screen, well thought out, little icons top right from clock face to go back. None of this silly swiping malarkay!
The fact you can send send directly from phone is also very cool!, the music player has plenty of features, favourites etc. it's actually very good. If this is a fitness device the Gear 2 shines.
+1 for android wear

Willing to Pay for android wear port

Cut dry plain & simple.
Im offering anywhere between 300-$500 for someone to port android wear to the Gear S2 Classic and have it fully function.
Im tired of Tizen and if i gotta dish out some extra cash to get better functionality from my watch then i will. This is no joke. you can PM me, or just leave comments below. I need android wear and so does the community. :good:
Why you bought smartwatches with Tizen, if you want Android Wear? Sorry, I don't get it.
Obvious question: Why not buy a Android Wear watch with your money?
Less obvious question: Why do you have a payment range?

i bought it because it was my first Samsung watch with tizen so i had no pre-experience with tizen and i wanted to give it a try. I like tizen, but there's limited functionality so i like android wear more, the watch has more than enough horse power to run android wear.
its like asking why do ppl buy touchwiz enabled phones just to use AOSP roms. people want what they want.

well 1. because i wanna keep my watch and have android wear on it. i love the s2's design over anyother watch and its more than capable spec wise to run android wear.
2. because i understand how hard devs work and i also understand the time and effort it takes to make something like this and to have it work 100%. its not easy for all of them. so i figure offering a nice wad of cash would peek someones interest and motivate them to do it. devs work hard and alot of times for free to give us amazing things. so for someone to do that for me and an entire community at that? id be willing to pay.

Understood.
I also think the design is great - not sure what Android Wear function you'd want to have the navigation ring perform - is there a good equivalent in Android wear's UI?
I'm part of the community and don't really want Android wear on my S2 - so perhaps 'entire community' is an assumption or projection.
Your sentiment for remuneration is admirable - but I was curious about the range ($300-$500), not the cash itself. Under what criteria would you donate $300 as opposed to $500? The reason I ask is that you are effectively saying "Spend 500 hours on something for me and I'll pay you for between 4 and 6 hours of that time, depending on... ? ".

I got 50 on it thinking about sending biktor my s2 when I get my s3 if he's willing I'll pm him
What im saying is id donate that much to have a fully functioning version not just at whatever i see appear. Of course i dont mean the whole community wants it but if you look in the android wear for gear s2 thread there's a lot of ppl there that really want it. and i think it sucks that ppl cant enjoy one or the other. and the navigation ring should have scrolling features. in android wear you can go left right up and down in the menus, and in tizen you can do the same in certain menus, so the ring should be able to scroll left and right or up and down in the menus the same way. im in no way saying Tizen sucks, but i also dont see anything wrong with wanting extra functionality when almost all of us root our phones and install custom roms. almost every other gear watch has android wear whether its official or a dev ported it, i just wanna see it for my watch and for the others who do want it, have them enjoy they're watch even more than they do. I personally can get more out of my watch with android wear, and i love it already i just want to love it more lol
I definitely understand the OP's statement. I love my Gear S2 for casual wear (back and forth to work) and I use my Huawei Watch to go out.
Tizen vs Android Wear is a huge difference. I love how large the Android Wear development community is compared to Tizen. I love the hardware on the Gear S2, mainly the built in ambient light sensor and rotating bezel.

I understand the issue better now. Thanks.
Perhaps I am not a typical user - I use my watch to view notifications, set timers, track steps walked, check the weather and of course tell the time. This is a lot of functionality, it all works, and it pretty sufficient (for me) for a single device.
You say you 'need' Android Wear and will be able to get more out of your watch. What will the new OS specifically let you do? If it is install more apps, specifically which AW apps will you install?

Install more apps and to answer the question of specifics, there are none in specific, people have apps in the android wear section that they personally love, where as tizen has a lack of. it also makes things like creating my own watch faces & installing them easier, and you can also make certain apps compatible with your watch that are not. and because my watch has 4G I can also install a web browser. thats just scratching some surfaces. side loading apps that devs make is another big thing. i buy android phones because i can customize them however i want to make my experience better and I feel like Tizen is too restricting and not too much supported with the lack of apps as well as not really being able to be modded. It works, but i would much rather have android on my watch where i could do more and make things easier and get more bang for my buck.

Hmm.. I guess my understanding fails here.
It seems to be that you want the flexibility to do things that you can't really specify, but feel there is potential there and you would like to have that potential, regardless of how useful it is will be, and with no particular personal usage problem to solve.
Ah, first-world problems are fascinating
Best of luck with the search for purposeless flexibility!
Google Now! Google maps!
S voice is terrible
Lot of various reasons to want android wear
The S2 might be lacking in the app department, but I think Android Wear is just decent at best, and Google Cards are annoying as hell. A good portion of Wear apps don't work as flawless as people make it out to be. Grass is always greener.
What I would like is for Samsung to get serious and get Bank, Credit Card, Social Media, and other misc services to develop apps for Samsung Tizen watches, like Apple does.
Google now! To hell with the cards just want the voice capabilities. If this watch had that it would be perfect even without android wear

Do you OWN an Android wear watch? I own both the Gear S2 and Huawei Watch and the software on the Huawei Watch is way more intuitive and it has a ton more of 3rd party development.
FYI I wear my Gear S2 as my daily driver because I don't mind scratching/damaging it. It definitely works. My biggest gripe is lack of development and the placement of the back button vs the home button.

Yes, I have owned the Gear Live and still have the 360(first smart watch I've owned). The last 2 years I've been wearing a Gear Neo 2 almost daily. And now the S2. Barely wore the Gear Live or 360. I just don't like the way Android Wear works for me. As much as I hate the "walled garden approach", I think it works great on a smartwatch.

Future of Gear S series and Tizen

So my question is basically will the future watch (or watches) from Samsung will be also using the Tizen system and will Samsung continue to support and the devices?
Or will it be like in other experiments where after a couple of versions the company moved to a different system and abandoned the old one.
I am asking this because i have been burned before with the HTC HD2 (LEO) that came with win6.5 and lost support after about a year (give or take) luck would have it that it could be outfitted with android and be used for a few more years but i don't think that this will be the case with watches.
So do you guys think that there is a future to Tizen and that the app store will continue to grow and improve and Samsung will continue to update the software? or will it switch for example to androidware next year and we might be stuck with a 400$ unsupported outdated watch that gets no new apps what so ever. (windows even closed down the app store for the win 6.5 at some point)..........
Hope to hear your thoughts o the matter before I go and buy one
It's tough to say... We're in a very weird spot. I would guess the Gear S3 is probably the best selling wearable, most desirable and IMO, most well rounded smartwatch. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like developers are knocking the door down to create apps. The scary part is, the S2 has been out for a while and it doesn't seem like much has been accomplished. Let's hope that these developers see the value in the S3 and we can get some basic apps added.

Tizen is an experiment - not much promotion by Samsung. The watch is a beautiful piece of hardware but as usual, Samsung is being devious - there is NOT 4 Gb of memory available but only 1.5 Gb - the rest is taken up by bloat - watchfaces that many won't use, S-Health that cannot be removed, etc.
Typical - they think they know what we want and never listen to customers - IMHO, these watches will (are?) not gaining market traction and are a solutoion looking for a problem to solve. Maybe some folks just want notifications, SMS, Email and not how many steps they walked today?

I've had my S3 for a few weeks now and love it but I have to admit that after having several Android watches, the support for apps is so much better. With the S3, you are pretty much stuck using all Samsung apps which sucks.

Unfortunately it is not just Samsung that does crap like that (forced apps etc). Even Pebble had watch faces that you couldn't remove if you wanted. Most every phone/tablet has bloat you can't remove. I don't understand this mentality and why they won't let the user make their own decisions, I guess they think we are all too dumb to know what we want. Maybe users aren't vocal enough and since no one complains they keep doing what they do thinking everyone likes it.
I have an issue with the S3 where when not connected to phone I get that distracting watch icon that ruins the look of watchfaces and can't be turned off. I guess Samsung never thought anyone would use the watch without being tethered to the phone constantly even though they allow it to be used standalone. I suppose they also never thought putting a big white icon over the 12:00 position on all faces would bother anyone, go figure.
As far as Tizen who knows I guess it depends on how easy it is to port to it from android and how popular it gets. Apple watch OS is only Apple and they succeeded being a separate OS.
I have been wondering the same. Whats the future of this platform? The gear s2 has been out for a while, and still pretty much the same. I mean not even google has any apps for tizen. What if this is a dying platform? What if once android wear gets next big release, samsung decides, oh we are done with tizen?

Welcome to Blackberry OS10 and Windows Mobile!
That is exactly my point...
I mean the watch looks beautiful and I think it's one of the best looking smart watches out there, and I also love the bezel use.
I had experience with Windows Mobile and Windows 8 rt and this is why I am not buying the watch yet.
I don't buy and don't intend to buy a new watch every year, I replace watches only when needed or every several years and I am kinda of scared on spending almost 400€ ( I live in germany) on a watch that will become irrelevant and not useful in a year or less.
Just like the HTC hd2 was replaced by an android version after less then a year ....
A big problem I see is our community is very scattered. Basically, I migrate between xda and android central. I've had android wear and after having this watch, I really don't want to go back, but unfortunately will have to of the app selection doesn't grow. I use this watch as a standalone sometimes and I need certain apps.
Man i dunno. I guess we probably have to just wait and see. If samsung sees money in this thing, they might invest enough. And who knows. Wish we had a way to attract developers for tizen.
Thank you all for the answers
I guess that at least for now i will remain on the fence.....
I cant afford and nor do I want to spend almost 400Euro's on a watch that I will need to replace in a year because of lack of support and lack of development......
