I just posted about this on my site and thought some T-Mobile peeps would think it was interesting. Supposedly it lets you access the internet via text messages without needing any data connection.
It might be B.S. (I can't test it since I'm on AT&T).

Just tried it, so far it doesnt seem to be working,...
its basically a browser, you type a url, and it sends you a text which takes about 30 seconds to get to you for some reason with these letters, then it says decoding...
and im stuck there. I have tMOBILE
and its stuck at decoding...
i was trying cnn.com
uninstalled.
Why only on T-Mobile?

I have not looked at this method, but back on old "dumb" phones, you could use a text message to access the Internet when you didn't pay for it. So, yea, this most likely is adapted from that trick.

Tried it but I guess their servers are getting killed right now. It's taking too long to get the MMS messages back
just tried it, take about ~35 seconds mobile gmail...great idea if you don't have internet?
Can anyone confirm if this works on AT&T?
I assume it just sends the request via sms to their email server then replies to your phone an encoded version of the webpage then decodes it within the app to load the web page...would be very inefficient.
Yes, but for someone that doesn't have a data plan, or wants to get rid of theirs because they don't use it much, this would be great in a pinch
90% of the time I'm in a wifi hotspot anyway. But this will work great for me when I'm not
So I've got this issue with my phone. I'm running Iwireless based in Iowa and ILL on my Motorola xt720. The Phone is actually available from the company so its not unlocked or anything like that and its running the default rom. Anyway. I have unlimited everything Ulimited 3g internet, Ulimited text, pic msg, and calling. My internet was working fine today. I've never tried to send a picture till today and as soon as I clicked send my internet stopped working and the picture didn't send. I've tried rebooting the phone, I've tried changing all the settings back to default, I've tried switching between settings and nothing seems to work I can't get my internet back and my picture messaging still wont work. I was wondering if anyone had some idea of what happened or how to fix it?
Okay so I took out my battery, Sim card, and memory card for like a few minutes and put them back in and my internet works again. But If I try to send a picture message my internet disappears again. Anyone have any idea why its doing this?
I think that in your plan rules there is something like you have "unlimited internet", BUT you cannot upload files larger than for example 1MB. Or maybe your internet is reconnected every ex. 3 minutes, and the picture stops to upload. Operators do it often, especially it my country, so i'm accustomed to this. It should prevent abusing the unlimited upload to use gsm to uploading large movies or games by 'pirates', but sometimes interferes to do normal things by normal users
I've never had that problem with my previous phone so I can't see how that would be it. Because it doesn't even upload the picture and send it. It just shuts my internet off and the picture never sends.
Sprint's mindblowingly fast 3G network has forced me time and time again to download Textra in order to send and receive MMS consistently. That's fine, it's a great app, but, to be honest, I prefer Google Messenger's Material look and feel. Here's the problem: Textra has the ability to send MMS over WiFi and it works wonders. Group MMS and pictures send almost instantly. So to regular text messages. With Google Messenger, I usually get a blank message that says "Tap to Download". That's annoying and they usually never download.
So what is it that Textra does differently? Is it a particular APN that they use or switch to when sending? If so, I'd like to identify this APN so that I can attempt to use the APN all the time and perhaps make it possible to send MMS over WiFi using any Messaging app, not just Textra.

I know it's been a while but I literally just reached the same conclusion and I'm confused too. Did you ever figure it out?

No I don't think I ever figured it out. I fiddled around with APNs and the like but it really came down to poor service from Speinr. MMS over WiFi definitely improved my experience but wasn't always practical when out and about. I switched to T-Mobile and never looked back.
I'm now with Google Fi and I notice wonky behavior sometimes when using Sprint's network like texts sending twice, etc. I really think a lot of it has to do with poor service and/or the network itself. Though, MMS over WiFi works perfectly when the phone is using Sprint's network.
I'm unrooted, on the latest version 5.1.1.
About two months ago or so, whenever I received a MMS from someone with a picture, my messaging app wouldn't download the picture.
This is hit and miss, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can send pictures via MMS, and recipients get them fine, I just can't receive them all of the time.
I've tried various messaging apps (stock, Google Messenger, Contacts+, etc.) and they all behave the same way. I've even tried to manually put in the APN information, and it has no effect.
Mobile data is turned on at all times, so I don't think that is the issue. Also, regular texts come in just fine.
Friends that try to send pics are using various phones on various carriers (some even on Verizon), so I have no idea what the problem is.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'd check your app settings first and then call verizon tech support since your not rooted. I use handcent and on verizon and I remember something like this years ago on a bionic, but it was a mobile network problem. Try having MMS msgs sent with mobile data on?
Lately I been having some issues with my texts with my S7 on the t-mobile network. Texts would only spin, then after 10mins I'll get an unable to send text. I'll have 4glte. Able to surf, download, with good speed averaging 35-40 mbs at the east coast. But yet some text just won't send. They can be either mms or just regular SMS. I have restarted the phone, the network, everything but they problem persist. Anyone else having this problem?
Also, just noticed that all sms and mms text that I wasn't able to send, just sent with no problems as soon as I connected to my home WiFi.
Unusual to say the least. Wish I could help you other then the whole restart and wish for the best.
Same thing happens to me. So freaking annoying.
Happens to me and my wife all the time
Do a factory reset.
