Telus/Fido/Koodo NS rooting - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone successfully rooted the new TELUS/FIDO/Koodoo (basically any 850 frequency version, NOT AWS)?
Which method did you use (post link please?)?
and flashed custom ROM (which and post link please).
WITHOUT losing the 3G radio capablity after flashing... thank you for the help

Rooted mine using the I9023 instructions.
Unlock bootloader
flash CWM for i9023
Flash Root Binaries.
I've not played with ROM's at all on this phone, so can't speak to them.

There's quite a few of us with the 850 version that are rooted. I used the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
to unlock the bootloader, flash recovery and root. Worked allright but it took a while to get all the drivers setup right. There's a step by step at post 30 I think that worked pretty well for most of it. You have to flash the recovery for the 9023 for some reason, make sure to do that.
I don't know about any other roms but I have no problems with CM7 and it hasn't changed my baseband, still running CKB2

same here rooted mine first time using the i9020 method (actually got root, tested using titanium backup) but CWM couldnt find/mount the cache until i flashed i9023 CWM
flashed netarchys 1.3.0.3 kernel, voodoo colors and sound works but BLN doesnt. I read to avoid flashing roms that will change radio for now.

voodoo colours change the radio doesn't it? Since it invovles flashing the kernel.

Radio is a separate component from the kernel.
The kernel controls things like the buttons, screen, audio.

Uhh the koodo version is the same as the rogers/bell version. I know because i'm using it on rogers right now. And i had no issues rooting.

using an i9020a here (from Koodo) used instructions which were specified for the i9023 to root and flash CWM.
Have CM7 running with Netarchy kernel. BLN works perfectly.

interesting, you are the first I know that has the bln working after using the i9023 root

I've got the koodo i9020a.
Rooted as above, using CM7 and the 007 kernal with voodo color/sound and Bln. Also flashed the KB3 modem with no issues with anything at this point.
Phone appeared to be sim unlocked right from koodo as well. If only they had white I would be a very happy camper right now.

got mine from Fido
used this tutorial to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
flashed MIUI rom from MIUI-dev.com
flashed Netarchy kernel 1.3.0.3-cfs-2.3.3
BLN wasn't working when I used the in-app test notification. So I unabled BLN. Then re-enabled it. Tried the in-app test again, didn't work.
Decided to just leave BLN enabled.
After an hour I got a sms, and BLN was working...weird I know, but it works so I'm happy

Rom and Kernel on 9020a??

I'm coming from the Galaxy and trying to make sure I don't screw up...can I flash any roms with this version without losing my precious 850 band?? And if so how do I flash my old radio back or is it that simple? Does flashing a kernel with voodoo sound change anything that I shouldn't? Just want to make sure that I don't get in too big of mess before I do anything. Not new to Android but there does seem to be some major differences to the i9000m to the Canadian version of the Nexus S.
Any help will be appreciated.
do a nandroid backup first.
but so far so good with me.
Thanks, that was the first thing I did when I got cmw.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Something I have been cautious of as well with my 9020a.
I am running the latest Netarchy kernel without problems so I think you should be fine flashing a kernel. I have stayed away from any ROM that changes the radio. I tried the NSCollab ROM and it ran without problems but decided to go back to stock 2.3.3.
AFAIK Nandroid backup does not backup the radio but I could be mistaken.
Cheers.

[Q] Help. Flashed my Telus Nexus S with ATT firmware, now network type shows GPRS.

I'm (obviously) a bit of a newb when it comes to android, and I was flashing back from cm7 to see how it was done. When I reinstalled GRJ22, everything was working fine. I then downloaded and flashed the OTA update to GRK39C (or so I thought). It turns out it was the update to GRK39F, which apparently is ATT or GPRS specific. My phone now thinks it's on ATT and is trying to use GPRS.
I'm on Telus in canada, and use HSPDA.
The phone was also showing baseband version I9020AXXKF1, it should be I9020AUCKD1.
I've tried restoring from a backup, flashing back to cm7 and to stock fw's, and even tried flashing the radio.
My phone still shows GPRS, and now baseband version shows I9020AXXKD1.
Is there any way to fix this? I hope someone here is knowledgeable about this...
That baseband is associated with the i9020t, or the t-mobile variant. The canadian nexus s is identical to the at&t version.
There is a sticky with all the roms. Use it and get the right rom installed
Unfortunately, the ROM I need seems to be one of the missing ones. Is there any way to backup the radio from my wife's (identical) phone and flash it to mine?
It looks like the file I need is 5282b5b3eb74.signed-sojua-ota-178324.5282b5b3.zip but I'm unable to locate a working link for the file. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and/or provide a live link?
Actually that particular one you want has broken tethering... This is a dump is the 2.3.4 with I9020AUCKD1 radio from my US import i9020a tested and working on SaskTel HSDPA+.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7812800/Stock-GRJ22-i9020A-unsigned.zip (will need to be flashed via CWM Recovery)
Thanks! I got it working by flashing the unsigned ROM in the sticky thread, and I'm running cyanogenmod 7.1 RC now. I'll keep the stock ROM on file just in case though...

Cool... I hope it works out well for you.
btw i got a rooted version of the stock 2.3.4 if you are interested as well.
So, for some reason flashing with your ROM set my phone to UMTS. Can someone refer me to a howto to backup a full ROM image from a phone, since my wife's is working fine and is on the right type of network.

[Q] After upgrade to ISC, have no more service.

Phone info:
Nexus S GT-i9020A
carrier:Fido
location:Canada
I was using the formels MIU os and everything was fine. I flashed Brainmaster's Stock ICS 4.0.3 and then lost signal. I can't search for networks nothing. I even tried installing the radio that corresponds to my phone, which I assume is UCKF1. I have gone back to MIU and STILL have no signal.
I've tried *#*#4636#*#* and selecting the band to USA.
When flashing other roms and kernels, this never happened to me. Any help please? Been trying to fix this since yesterday and now luck D'x
Probably the wrong radio. Download the full stock 2.3.6 for your device and flash only the radio from there.
I am actually haveing the same issue, seems to be efs is currupted...

You mean restoring from nandroid backup? That won't do the trick because CWM backup doesn't include radio. You have to use the full OTA package for your phone model.

[Q] Return to Stock for Nexus S

Hello there.
I would like to ask for your good help restoring my Nexus S. I'm actually really exhausted looking for answers and tried downloading programs (e.g. One Click Stock) already. I wouldn't try to poke you guys if I hadn't reached dead end. Painstakingly exhausted for the last 3 days plus the slow connection we have here.
Using One Click Stock by Michael Peerman, I'm stuck without a signal since it says that I'm on Sprint. Everything works except that I'm always without signal.
My phone is under Globe Telecommunications Philippines. Build Number GRJ22. Currently it is in Gingerbread 2.3.4.
I won't bother rooting it again. I just want a simple droid without the extra benefits of a rooted phone.
Any help pointing me to the right direction would be really appreciated.
just flash a stock rom! and that would make a stock nexus s! and if you want even more you can lock the bootloader again!! and about the signal try flashing another radio!

It's only the ICS rom the one fot t-mobile. The GB one is for everybody
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommana...s&name=Stock Images&deviceName=Google Nexus S
Hello There.
Thanks for the hot tip. I got it all back to stock.
I did was root the phone again,
installed ClockworkMod. > Mount USB to PC > on the clockworkmod folder I created new folder "backup". Then paste the Stock Rom.
Reboot to Recovery then install from zip.
Voila! It worked.
Very much thanks to everyone.
Stock is different baseband version
I had recently flashed an ICS rom and could not get my mobile data working after trying every single radio for my model I9020A.
So I used rom manger to download 2.3.3 stock GB as described in this thread. Now it is showing I have baseband version I9020XXXB1 and when I go to system updates it says my system is up to date. How do I update to newest version of GB and show the correct baseband version of my phone?

HELP! No signal/mobile internet

If anyone can help me and get this working, I will send you $5 via paypal.
Okay so I have fairly decent knowledge of roms/kernels/flashing etc. but I just don't know what to do to fix this problem.
It seems to have happened after I've;
Used the app - Network Speed Booster
Flashed a new rom
Changed the APN (Worked fine)
What I've Tried
- Flashing a new ROM
- Reflashing current ROM
- Flashing a different kernel
- Changing the radio band
- Resetting the APN to default
- A different SIM
Baseband - I9020XXJK8
Thanks to anyone who helps! If you tell me how to get it working, I will PM you saying that I will send you 5$ paypal.
Is the IMEI on the back of your phone (behind battery) the same as the one it shows you in settings -> about?
i had same issues

Thanks for the reply, I will try that rom and kernel now and will post results later.
why don't you just use the stock rom without any changes???!!! i haven't encountred issues since the 4.0.4 is out..
In this case i wouldn't bother with custom ROMs. Grab yourself a stock ROM from the sticky, do your backups and wipes (data/factory reset, format /system, format /boot) and then flash the FULL ROM from the sticky.
This will require you to reroot. I would throw the latest superuser.zip on your sdcard and flash that immediately after flashing your new ROM to make it easier for you.
Can you try a stock rom?
Here's a list.

When troubleshooting something like this, stock is by far the best option. He is free to do what he wants after the problem and cause are found and fixed.
