[Q] External Battery Cradle for Car - Epic 4G Accessories

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to find one of those eBay external battery charges that can be used in the car. I have two of the wall chargers and I was wondering if anyone had seen one that would plug into a cigarette lighter or one that could be used via usb charging. I know I could just get an inverter and use a wall charging cradle but I was hoping to avoid all the extra bulk.

You can always get a universal charger:

or a small usb universal one:

[Q] USB based extra battery charger?

Now I have 3 batteries and I have to find a USB-based charger for these batteries. Checked ebay and found they're plugged, but I found the quality isn't good and it makes a lot of noise to the power line (it causes loud hissing on amplifier and kills powerline network), so this is not an option for me.
Since I have centralized USB charger (modified from 7 port powered USB hub), I am looking for USB based battery only charger, but so far I only found a cradle with some other accessories which I don't use.
http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Cradle-Dock...110463?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2eb51d953f
Any suggestions?
Ive seen many universal types on ebay for years but haven't tried them myself.
There are a few $5 clip on style, desktop style and $30 model that comes with a car charger, but for $25 difference I would rather charge via a USB car charger to power the $5 lol

http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Micro-SD-TF...C_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item4aaac188b1 USB charger & SD reader
USB & wall charger seems convenient

And on 2nd thought this doesn't seem bad for $28 shipped

Here is the cradle alone...

Retractable car charger?

Been looking for a new car charger for my skyrocket, I'm looking for a retractable usb charger to reduce clutter in my truck. I've been scouring Amazon but I don't think many of them will power the hungry phone with Navigation and Music playing. Anyone have any suggestions?
Find one rated for 1amp, I know eBay has a few
i bought one of these:
http://www.gizmag.com/thanko-release-dual-usb-in-car-charger-low-price/16171/
then i bought a retractable usb cable. The good thing about doing it this way is that I'm able to charge two phones in the car and I can take the cable out and use it on my PC as well.
I has been my experience in the past that the retractable ones do not last long, and often times cause issues with the usb ports on the phones. What I have done is purchased a griffin dual usb port 12v plug, and a short usb cable. And with any excess, I got a few rubber bands from a neighbors daughter that has braces and coiled the remainder of the cable.
Or in vehicle #2, I bought the same griffin 12v plug and then removed the dash bezel and center console and ran the wire underneath that for a good clean look.
Recommend Scosche Dual 2.1A USB Car Charger
I had good luck with cheap retractable cords from ebay (~1/each)
I use them with a Scosche Dual 2.1A (4.2 amps total) USB Car Charger (~$17 on ebay). This charger allows me to use gps navigation on long trips and not drain the battery. My cheaper lower 1amp chargers did not maintain battery power with GPS navigation.

You dont have to have a modded cable if your car charger already has the data pins shorted. Im using the motorola rapid charger too and it works fine, it will charge your phone as AC and give enough power to recharge the battery with navigation on. if you want something a bit better you can try this one , they ship to canada. My rapid charger broke so i bought it a few days ago. Reviews says the trident will give around 8-900mA, the moto charger outputs around 6-700mA.
I would only buy a premium brand here. If you see how no name mains adaptors are made... the risk of blowing up something expensive is just too big.
I wnent with the Sony AN-400 / 401, because it is rated at 1.2 amps exactly, is small, and was reported to work fine.
For some regulator disasters:
http://hackaday.com/2012/08/15/buying-cheaper-electronics-and-not-saving-money/ <- a USB car charger without components, putting 12 volts straight on USB.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi-b9k-0KfE <- teardown of imitation apple mains adapter, showing no output protection and very little gap between mains voltage and output circuit. Good info, but style of presentation is not my cup of tea.
So that is why I went with a premium brand.
that's one charger from one factory that some guy that didnt know what he was doing and ordered thousands, without testing them. He probably went for the 25 cent super deluxe model...
Well reviewed chargers from xda members here and not to mention the hundreds of people on amazon are a safe bet. Here's a 8+page thread on the charger i linked. Your premium brand name sony charger is made in china too.

1. Get a bullet-type 2.1 amp USB charger:
http://www.amazon.com/iFlash-Lighter-Charger-Adapter-Output/dp/B008LM45I2/ref=pd_sbs_misc_7
2. Add a "charge only" USB cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-U...357979634&sr=1-11&keywords=usb+charging+cable
This combo charges a Nexus 7 (which requires even more current) with navigation on!

That looks ok,but I cant find a good quality usb charge only cable that ships to canada :
I have a el cheapo usb charger from ebay and I used my usb cable that came with the phone...and when i pluged it in it switches from AC charge to USB ever couple of seconds back and forth...so I want to try something different.
If you're into rooting and custom kernels, most of them have a fastcharge option where you don't need to have a special usb cable, or, attempt to short the D- and D+ lines.
Monoprice has a 2.1A bullet charger for a bit cheaper:

i cant say for sure until i get it sometime next week but i think so. im in canada too and couldnt find the powergen anywhere that would ship here.
There are some other brands that are good too but i like this one cause it's dual usb like my old moto rapid charger. If you dont need that you can get some smaller ones that will work just make sure they are well review and can output around 1A. The one that bfspider spider recommends is a good bet too since monoprice is pretty reputable store and will ship to canada.

You can try to mod this one in the mean time, just take it apart and attach the two data pins(they are the two middle ones). Solder is best but if you cant you can just use pilers and bend the pins until they touch. i did this with a few of my chargers too and it works to make them AC but it wont increase the output if its low to begin with.

Once again thank you so much.I found the Trident charger here with free shiping to USA and Canada and good reviews
I just bought a "Samsung Car Adapter" with this output: 5V 1A
Is this a good CAR adapter for Nexus 4?
The Nexus 4 "LG travel charger", has this Output: 5V 1.2A
I wan't to use this Samsung Car Adapter while using GPS on the Car or playing games on the Car without lowering the battery.

FYI, this adapter should allow most existing "iPad" chargers (1.2A or higher) + any USB cable to work well with the Nexus 4.
The problem is that Apple products deviate from USB charging standards. As a result, most chargers try to be compatible with iDevices and also deviate from the standards. So when standard-compliant devices try to follow the standards, the chargers refuse to follow the standards, and the devices get upset with each other. Fortunately, they fall back and settle on a lower-power charging rate.
If you want to buy chargers that are very clear on what they support, check out MediaBridge (also available on Amazon).
Why does a bog standard USB cable work in the car for me? Using a proper off-line sat nav my phone was fully charged

So i got that Trident charger that you recommended....the quality looks good...but when I tried it in the 1A and 2A port with the usb cable that comes with it,it shows USB charging but when I use the HTC usb cable that came with my HTC one S it shows AC charging....its so confusing and I just dont get it....that HTC cable is a sync and charge cable.
The generic T-Mobile car charger available at T-Mobile stores charges just fine. I believe it is at least 1 amp. Its black, has a purple white small led indicator when charging. The USB end looks like a little block and the cord is an accordion type and it also has a a female USB slot in it to plug something else in at the same time but I believe whatever USB cord you plug in there only charges at .5 amp. With this charger I can run navigation and Bluetooth and Pandora and message at the same time and it will charge.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
I just dont get it why does it with one cable show USB charging and with the other HTC cable AC charging?:S
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

[Q] Working USB car charger while navigating

Since I already tried 4 USB car chargers (Osungo Carjuice 2.1A, Belkin 2.1A, Ewent 2.1A, Belkin 1A) with several USB cables (my intention is to use this cable I got from dx.com), but none of the combinations succeeded in charging my N5 while using navigation on the road.
In the settings menu -> battery all of them display Charging (AC) when plugged in my car.
During night time they keep the battery around the same level and during day time the battery percentage even slowly drops.
I'm going to perform some measurements later today with Battery Monitor Widget and/or Currentwidget to get some numbers.
The stores close-by only sell this stuff for ridiculous prices, so I spent enough money on gas already. I haven't ordered anything online yet since it seems nothing is guaranteed to work and therefore I don't want to deal with the hassle of return processes plus shipping costs.
The only car charger that does work is the charger that came with my Galaxy Nexus car holder, but I never liked that charger since it doesn't have a coiled cable so the cable is all over the place across your dash and it has no universal USB connection to charge all kind of devices in your car.
Also I'm looking for a solution which doesn't require soldering of some sort.
Does the USB car charger + coiled USB cable which I'm looking for even exist and why is it so hard to just get a working car charger for your N5?
Today I did some measurements with Currentwidget and the problem lies in the cable which I got from Dealextreme.
When I tested with the USB cable which came with the N5 all chargers work fine.
Now I hope I can find a coiled USB cable which works just like the original N5 cable for a decent price.
Found one from Mediabridge, but it seems this cable isn't available in the Netherlands and on Ebay shipping costs are insane.
Does the 1A charger still charge the phone while navigating? Or is a 2.1A charger needed?

Both can charge the phone while navigating, as long as you use the right cable.
Very annoying since there is no way to tell which cable is good and which cable is not good.
This was also noticed in the following threads:
[Q] Terrible charge rate?
Need good car charger recommendations please
Discharging while using Navigation
Tried the cable which came with the HTC OEM Car Charger CC C200, together with a 2.1mAh car charger and it barely charged the N5 while navigating. The charging level went up 1% in about 25 minutes time, in comparison if you use the cable which came with the N5 the level will have gone up around 15-20%.
The Mediabridge cables (such as this one) should suffice (available on Amazon and Ebay).
Since those are not available in Europe and shipping costs are way too high, I now found an alternative from Speedlink. Hopefully this one will work just as good as the original N5 USB cable.
I am using PowerGen 2.1A car charger with 3' Samsung OEM usb cable and able to charge the phone while using Navigation, brightness at full, and streaming tune-in on LTE. Very happy with the setup.
I had a monoprice 10' usb cable, the thick version with cap on ends, the 3' samsung oeum usb cable works much better. Testing on my old phone Optimus G Pro, there are about +200mA improvement using the 3' samsung oem usb cable over the monoprice 10' usb cable. so make sure to use the shortest usb cable possible.

[Q] How fast does a Magnetic Charging Cable charge?

I bought an OEM magnetic charging cable. I am mostly using it at work, connected to my laptop. Lately I tried to use it connected to the wallcharger adapter capable of 1500mAh.
I used to think that the magnetic charger was charging faster., however I noticed that my Amami is getting charged faster with a USB->microUSB cable by use of the wall charger.
Is that normal?
or
Does my magnetic charging cable not working properly?
Hi!
Wireless chargers are always slower than just charging over USB just cause of the way they work, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

i also noticed differences in charging times using magnetic dock. it usually takes longer time to charge when it's peak load in your block/neighborhood. i would use a quick charger with the magnetic cable to improve charging time. or use a 2000mAh charger. avoid using the usb port to charge your amami. the rubber gasket used to protect and keep the port waterproof will wear out faster.

Yes thats why I bought the magnetic charger (to avoid the rubber to be deformed).
Do you think using a 2000 mAh charger will be safe? I doubt to use chargers over the original wall charger's capacity 1500 mAh.

yes. the soc should be able to handle 2000mah as it supports quick charge 2.0.
Yes I am now charging it with a 2000mAh charger connected to the magnetic charging cable and it is faster than before, actually much more faster. :good: Thank you !
Magnetic charge is way faster beside all the other advantages.

It's called "Gilsey Magnetic USB Charging Cable", very cheap, very useful. Got two of them and they're in permanent use for a year now. No probs.
