You dont have to have a modded cable if your car charger already has the data pins shorted. Im using the motorola rapid charger too and it works fine, it will charge your phone as AC and give enough power to recharge the battery with navigation on. if you want something a bit better you can try this one , they ship to canada. My rapid charger broke so i bought it a few days ago. Reviews says the trident will give around 8-900mA, the moto charger outputs around 6-700mA.
I would only buy a premium brand here. If you see how no name mains adaptors are made... the risk of blowing up something expensive is just too big.
I wnent with the Sony AN-400 / 401, because it is rated at 1.2 amps exactly, is small, and was reported to work fine.
For some regulator disasters:
http://hackaday.com/2012/08/15/buying-cheaper-electronics-and-not-saving-money/ <- a USB car charger without components, putting 12 volts straight on USB.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi-b9k-0KfE <- teardown of imitation apple mains adapter, showing no output protection and very little gap between mains voltage and output circuit. Good info, but style of presentation is not my cup of tea.
So that is why I went with a premium brand.
that's one charger from one factory that some guy that didnt know what he was doing and ordered thousands, without testing them. He probably went for the 25 cent super deluxe model...
Well reviewed chargers from xda members here and not to mention the hundreds of people on amazon are a safe bet. Here's a 8+page thread on the charger i linked. Your premium brand name sony charger is made in china too.

1. Get a bullet-type 2.1 amp USB charger:

2. Add a "charge only" USB cable:

This combo charges a Nexus 7 (which requires even more current) with navigation on!

That looks ok,but I cant find a good quality usb charge only cable that ships to canada :
I have a el cheapo usb charger from ebay and I used my usb cable that came with the phone...and when i pluged it in it switches from AC charge to USB ever couple of seconds back and forth...so I want to try something different.
If you're into rooting and custom kernels, most of them have a fastcharge option where you don't need to have a special usb cable, or, attempt to short the D- and D+ lines.
Monoprice has a 2.1A bullet charger for a bit cheaper:

i cant say for sure until i get it sometime next week but i think so. im in canada too and couldnt find the powergen anywhere that would ship here.
There are some other brands that are good too but i like this one cause it's dual usb like my old moto rapid charger. If you dont need that you can get some smaller ones that will work just make sure they are well review and can output around 1A. The one that bfspider spider recommends is a good bet too since monoprice is pretty reputable store and will ship to canada.

You can try to mod this one in the mean time, just take it apart and attach the two data pins(they are the two middle ones). Solder is best but if you cant you can just use pilers and bend the pins until they touch. i did this with a few of my chargers too and it works to make them AC but it wont increase the output if its low to begin with.

I just bought a "Samsung Car Adapter" with this output: 5V 1A
Is this a good CAR adapter for Nexus 4?
The Nexus 4 "LG travel charger", has this Output: 5V 1.2A
I wan't to use this Samsung Car Adapter while using GPS on the Car or playing games on the Car without lowering the battery.

FYI, this adapter should allow most existing "iPad" chargers (1.2A or higher) + any USB cable to work well with the Nexus 4.
The problem is that Apple products deviate from USB charging standards. As a result, most chargers try to be compatible with iDevices and also deviate from the standards. So when standard-compliant devices try to follow the standards, the chargers refuse to follow the standards, and the devices get upset with each other. Fortunately, they fall back and settle on a lower-power charging rate.
If you want to buy chargers that are very clear on what they support, check out MediaBridge (also available on Amazon).
Why does a bog standard USB cable work in the car for me? Using a proper off-line sat nav my phone was fully charged

So i got that Trident charger that you recommended....the quality looks good...but when I tried it in the 1A and 2A port with the usb cable that comes with it,it shows USB charging but when I use the HTC usb cable that came with my HTC one S it shows AC charging....its so confusing and I just dont get it....that HTC cable is a sync and charge cable.
The generic T-Mobile car charger available at T-Mobile stores charges just fine. I believe it is at least 1 amp. Its black, has a purple white small led indicator when charging. The USB end looks like a little block and the cord is an accordion type and it also has a a female USB slot in it to plug something else in at the same time but I believe whatever USB cord you plug in there only charges at .5 amp. With this charger I can run navigation and Bluetooth and Pandora and message at the same time and it will charge.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
I just dont get it why does it with one cable show USB charging and with the other HTC cable AC charging?:S

Ordered a universal one with wall attachment and car attachment and when I connect the USB to microUSB cord the phone doesn't charge. Ordered another stand alone car charger and it, also, doesn't charge. If I attach the USB cord that came with the phone to the wall/car charger it charges fine. Both, specifically said for the "Nexus One". Is it an amp issue? Most microUSB charger in the mall cell phone kiosks won't charge it either. Is it a proprietary microUSB cord that I need or a matter of amps or something?
Why not buy from Monoprice.com?!
I ordered 8 USB cords (2/each of 4 different lengths), 2 Car Chargers, and 2 Wall chargers. All work perfectly fine, and I paid under $25. (Wife has a CLIQ, so we got plenty to work for both of us.)
So, I don't know what your issue is... Other than just not going to Monoprice

well I havent ordered from monoprice since customers got slammed with bogus charges... i guess i could give them another try though, but still... kinda weary
Why? I had over $1300 attempted to be spent at Newegg, and my CC company called me and stopped the charges. Got a new CC in the mail the following day. Some random amount at Apple as well. LOL. Fun times.
(Yes, it happened to me. I'm fairly confident it was from the same issue as others..) But, that doesn't stop me from using a company that makes good products, expecially when they just made such a big mistake. Odds are, it won't be happening again for a long while
Either way... Those are risks with online shopping. You just have to make sure that your method of purchase has fail-safes.
I have a CRAP load of mini USB chargers (all HTC stock) and didn't want to buy more. I bought a bunch of Motorola mini to micro adapters off Overstock.com for $2 a piece and couldn't be happier. I also bought the official Google cradle to avoid additional wear and tear on the microUSB port.

I bought a car/home charger from eBay when I had my Motorola Cliq, and my home charger would keep going on/off charging. I later found out that it was the voltage issue, where the charger was giving a maximum of 5 amps and the Motorola Cliq needed 5.1V or something like that.
But most chargers I've bought don't power the Nexus One. What specific voltage or amps should I look for it to have? The two I bought off of eBay specifically said they were for the Nexus One. Neither worked. Sellers are putting any micro SD chargers up for sale assuming they will change the phone. They will not. What technical spec will tell me if it really will charge it?
Could someone post a link to a USB charger that absolutely works? I just bought another one from Best Buy that doesn't charge the Nexus. Made by Rocketfish and is suppose to be universal.
Thats really wierd. Every charger i've tried works fine.
You're charger should be outputting 5V and anywhere from 300mA upwards. There is no max mA limit because the phone will only draw what it needs.
This might sound patronising, and I really dont mean it to, but when you say doesnt charge how do you know?
Do you mean from totally flat it won't turn the phone on and start charging it, or do you mean when the phone is on the battery indicator doesnt show a charging, and the LED doesnt go orange/green?
Or do you mean it never charges to full?
When I plug it in it's as if nothing happens. No light, no thunderbolt symbol on the battery, no screen wake-up, nothing. Nada. Now, the HTC wall charger and usb charger work fine. But if a MicroUSB charger calls itself "universal" it does not mean it will charge the Nexus. The HTC HD2 charger my wife has works fine on the Nexus though.
Hmm strange.
The charge process works like this:
- Charger plugged in causes voltage change on +ve USB line - potential charger detected.
- Phone draws minimal current (50 to 100mA) and tries to negotiate USB power
-- If that suceeds it tries to increase power to 500mA if the USB port supports it. If yes charging starts at 500mA, if not charging starts at 100mA
- If USB negotiation fails, it checks if D+/D- are bridged.
-- If D+/D- are bridged, the phone draws as much current as it can/needs
-- If D+/D- are not bridged, the phone draws a max of 500mA
There's nothing special about the chargers unless they have been wired in some special way for a specific phone. Thats why I'm very surprised these chargers dont work.
I know that if I chop a USB extention cable and cut out D+/D-, my nexus charges at 500mA. I've tried this myself for a totally different purpose. Thats no different to ground and power being wired to a 5v source.
Odd, I have three car USB adaptors and two AC USB adaptors.. All charged the phone, although only the AC charger shipped with the Nexus would do a fast charge, and none of my car chargers would. I found one that was rated 1Ah and soldered the two middle pins, now it works as a fast charger too.
The Motorola P513 car charger (OEM designed for a Droid) gives out 950mA, is super cheap (~$3+shipping), and works great for a fast charge with the Nexus One.

Thank you sir. I've been trying to find a car charger that guarantees a fast charge.
Just ordered one from Play.com for £3.99 w/ free shipping.
Maybe now I can use GPS for more than an hour...
I dunno.
My motorola charger for my old bluetooth (H780?) works fine, as well as the original google charger. I also have a car charger for my old bluetooth as well.
My suggestion, is to only buy name brand chargers?

Blackberry micro use chargers are all over the place. do any of these work adequately with our phone? Do they supply enough amps/volts?
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
without having testet this, i'd assume any USB Charger with an output of 5 Volts and 500 mA can do the job. I am using the original Charger, the one from my Sony Ericsson X1 and also a Sanyo Mobile Booster (Portable Battery Charger). They all work well
Charger from the hd2 works fine too! its all becoming very standardised now
Yeah, it's just I heard that certain chargers don't appear to work very well, with some people reporting that their phone has run out of charge when going on long journeys whilst using the phone as satnav - so using cables which employ the correct ampage/voltage could be important.
The micro USB Blackberry charger works fine on my Desire

Sorry, totally missed this. I just put 'usb charger 1a' into the search. The seller was 'arygroup'. It's not as quick as the one it comes with but it's fast enough!
The phone says it is charging from USB, whereas it doesn't with the proper charger. Not sure why yet...
I received my car holder with car charger a few days ago, it is labeled as a Moto.V8, and should output 1.5 mAh.
I don't know if it geniune Motorola charger or clone, always a surprise with eBay
Haven't tested it yet, all I hope is that it doesn't drain my phone while I'm using GPS navigation.
I've read some stories that certain chargers can charge, but when using GPS applications they will drain.
There are a couple of other posts about the same thing. Lets try and keep it to one thread. Better for updates etc
For those in the UK sainsburys are doing a 1amp car charger for 6 quid.
It includes two usb sockets, and is white.
When plugged into my desire, the phone reports that it is being charged by AC, and sat nav dosent drain the battery (in fact it still charges.)

From another thread, it appears that the phone will only draw 500 mA unless the USB data pins are shorted together. A few minutes with a soldering iron and the charger works as well as the HTC one.
If you have any old HTC (Diamond etc) 1A chargers lying around just buy one of the Mini to Micro USB Charger Adapter Converters for 99p including p+p from ebay and use them!
I have run some tests on 500mA chargers and would be interested in hearing how someone else has got on with one (instead of a 1A).
At first I was using a 5 Volts & 500 mA Blackberry charger with a cheap micro USB cable and getting very slow charging. At first I thought this was the 500mA rating but then I got a brand new official Nokia micro USB cable and it seems to charge at a comparable rate to my official charger. I'm at a bit of a loss to explain it other than perhaps the quality of the cable has a lot more effect on charging than I thought (I don't think the data connectors have been shorted on the Nokia cable, I can transfer data fine using it)

I can confirm this =P. But you DON'T need to buy a new usb cord, just use the cord that comes with the desire and plug it into the Touch diamond Charger
I had the Touch diamond and Im using the touch diamond charger for this phone cuz it LOOKS way better (when i plug it in, HTC lights up ), and it charges almost twice as fast (Difference is very noticeable)
I was manically driving around to find a car charger, and EVENTUALLY found one at a Vodacom shop(in South Africa). It was made by Body Glove, and it's a 360 rotating device, with a USB port on it. The Micro USB cable that came with it is retractable, but I haven't used it. I used the cable that came with my phone. Will test it later. I drove about 200 plus miles with it, and my charge was good after the trip. My phone is still less than a week old, so the battery charge hasn't quite gotten to where it should be. Cost me about R99 (About $12)
By the way, the Micro USB connector will supposedly be the only connector on phones by 2012. It has apparently been standardized, so that people will just get a phone, but that all chargers will work on all phones. Too much waste from old chargers they say.

Anyone know if there are any devices like this that has 900mA output (or know what output the linked one has)? Seems that's the minimum needed to charge the Charge via USB. My current one rated at 700mA does nothing when plugged in the Charge.
My friend has one something like this and I was using it for my Charge and it worked fairly well. I am not sure if it is the same one but they look the same size, I just used the usb that came with the charge to plug into it and it worked. It also works well with his iphone 4 if that helps at all.

I bought a dual usb car charger (it has 2 usb ports) that says its for ipads or tablets, and supplies 2A. It does seem to charge faster than my other car chargers, but I think it also triggers USB mass storage mode, because apps stored on the SD card aren't usable when its plugged into this. Is this because of the USB cable i'm using (a generic USB to micro usb cable)? or is it because of the charger?
this is the charger - although Amazon's pictures don't exactly match - the one customer supplied picture does, though.

Samsung might have made devices more "sensetive" to crap products. Try different cable (try original USB cable that came with ur phone and the charger you bought).
I tried original USB but to no avail. Perhaps this has something to do with this:

The problem is most generic car chargers are designed to work with Apple products. Apple uses a non-standard way of telling their devices essentially "hey, I'm a charger." This makes "standard" devices not recognize the charger properly. The device tends to think it's plugged into a computer and only draw around 500mAh.
You can convert a USB cable into a charging cable by shorting the data pins (on the device side), or you can buy charging only cables. I've been using these cables on my S2, and now my S5: http://amzn.com/B007F1DV76 . I used a Galaxy Charging app to verify charging rate and it indicated 1.2A on both the Samsung wall-wart and cable as well as my Scosche 2.1A car charger w/ charging only cable.

Why is this? When 4 out of 5 devices are built on Android? http://tinyurl.com/qxpnyoh
I am so irritated at not having access to quality accessories for my devices. Take for example I wanted a set of great sounding headphones that controlled my mic, my tracks, etc. But, you won't find it other than Samsung's own that come with the phone. I had a great sounding pair of Seinnheisers but could not go back and forward on tracks. I plugged it into my ancient Ipod 5th gen classic and worked beautifully! For $80 I should get full functionality for my S4 or S5! My only choice is the LG Tones. Which are awesome but if my battery dies then no music or calls for me!
Frustrated!
My Klipsch earphones work perfectly changing tracks with with the inline remote.
Also my 2.1A charging won't charge my GS5 but it'll charge a GS4 and my Galaxy Exhilarate.

I followed these instructions and my car charger now charges my gs5:

Anyone wanting to know how to fast charge using the usb port on your pc/laptop?
This usually takes ages compared to charging via mains lead, the hack itself is quite simple and involves modifying the usb cable
my results are as follows (these can vary depending on what you are using your phone for, what background apps running, etc.
charging with mains lead :
4.2v
998mah
mains ac
charging with STANDARD usb lead:
422mah
3.999v
standard usb
and finally the MODIFIED usb lead hack:
4.161v
782mah
usb hack
as you can see it is a 53% increase in charging compared to standard usb charging mah, and slightly under mains ac charging mah,
as my phone is always plugged in at my work pc or home pc or laptop or whatever this works out good
TUT:
use at your own risk this is for information purposes only and I hold no responsibility to any damage that may arise
using a micro usb cable (charging cable for htc phones)
cut it using a pliers half way through the cable
using pliers again cut away the thick black wiring, the red and black small wiring, and white and green wiring
from the usb port end to the microusb connect the black and red cables together so they join
from the microusb end short out the white and green cables together
from the usb port end leave the white and green cables, do not touch these
use insulation tape/solder to clean it up and then your cable is ready
I will make a mod for car chargers also soon
see attached image showing which wires to cut and which to join up and which to leave alone, if this helped you in anyway (it should help you ) then please hit the thanks button
this mod will trick your pc/laptop/htc into thinking that it is not a pc usb cable and will allow higher currents and voltage to your phone
you can check this with current widget from market place
once this mod is done, you cannot use the same cable again for pc/usb tethering or usb disk drive, only cable can be used for charging

Which cable are you using with that charger?

I also bought a charger (Rapid USB Car Charger, http://bit.ly/VrK8s2) that was able to charge up to 2.1 A, but when I connect my Nexus 5 (with OEM cable), I charge with speed of 500 mA. I expected least 1 A.
I'm not amused at all! End users shouldn't have to deal with this nonsense. This should work out of the box!
I have two alternative:
1. Buy this charging cable.
2. Change kernel to trick the phone to draw more power from the USB port.
This 2A charger from PowerGen has dual ports that are actually labeled for Apple and "Standard" charging. PowerGen 2.4Amps / 12W Dual USB Car charger Designed for Apple and Android Devices http://amzn.com/B006SU0SX0
Works fine with the stock cable also. I have this one in my wife's vehicle since she has an iPhone and I have a Samsung.

Can't find any online store that will ship to Sweden.
Funny, none of my old $$$ dual chargers would charge my S5 for S&G picked up a dollar tree special and it charges my S5! I give up!

i use old regular usb cables, charges about 1% per minute, works great!! (not using usb3 cables)
wtf black price!! lol. mine was about $10, purchased 2 when the s5 phones came out.
I heard that cables matter the most in charging. I always use cables that came with my phone and have had no issues charging my phone so far. Have used PowerGen and Avantek. Both charge my iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 at full speed. High quality construction and seems pretty durable.
This car charger works flawlessly at 1800mAh, i have been using it for a few month now.

I tried at least 5 different chargers and none of them charged more then 450mAh, i was really depressed about it until i found the charger linked above. Also, the fast charging USB cable *charges on 750 - 850 mAh which is just enough to not let your phone loose battery percentage while the navigation is turned on.
Try a Special Samsung Galaxy S5 Charger

I recently got a new Galaxy s5 on contract. I've heard that the galaxy s5 supports fast charging with a 2.1A charger. I bought a 2.1A car charger online, but the charger doesn't work when I connect it via a regular micro-USB cable to my phone. My brother's Galaxy s4 mini charges fine on it.
I was reading something on another post mentioning the need to modify the cable itself?
Any suggestions? I have another USB car charger for an iPad, and this charger also doesn't seem to work, whereas my old 1A car charger does work, but charges very slowly.

Hello,
I think you should go for a special Samsung Galaxy S5 Charger[/URL] car charger .I found a large variety of car chargers but you should look if it is the right watts that your S5 needs, maybe this is the reason why your brother phone charged and yours not
I thought I would like to share with others my findings about the USB cable issues and the charging issues also reviewing few products.
I know that it would probably be best with some real table lab equipment but I have tested it with a usb multimeter device : PortaPow USB Power Monitor / Multimeter / DC Ammeter
Showing me Amps and volts.
It is true what is said that the device can detect to a degree the charger
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53917336
So I used combo of software and hardware testing. I also tested with a S3 and S4 rooted (custom roms), and nexus 7 2013 (unique to this charger that it specs the 5v at 5.2! @ 1.35A and it does push more, to other devise as well)
Not all cables are equal; even not all OEM will work past 1A. It seems that most OEM’s cheat by using a shorter micro USB cable to get better charging results, this is the question many ask why so short cables, the OEM’s are only now slowly moving to thicker power wires IE 28/24 in there OEM usb cables.
Now my findings about the PortaPow USB Power monitor and any of the kind, is that it seems to effect the charging Amps of the device and also effect any smart chargers (will talk about below)
In the past I used to use exclusively the “Battery Monitor Widget” by 3c, lately I went and got also “Galaxy Charging Current Lite” for whatever reason my S3 shows as incompatible? Thought it should work on it, my S4 installed and shows max and reference/average
Test 1: S3 Genuine 100% OEM cable (I know because I bought the S3 new @ t-mobile)
Test 2: Claimed Genuine Samsung Micro USB cable 5 feet ECC1DU6BBE
Test 3: Nexus 7 2013 usb cable (is claimed to be a 28/24 AWG)
I was skeptical about the Claimed Genuine cable, and though it looks and feels just like the real thing, it varies in the logo and length. Performance wise has shown consistently of a 0.1-0.15A lower than the Genuine Samsung cable that I have from S3. This was done with the USB power monitor and with the Galaxy Charging Current Lite app, it even said 860mAh vs 760mAh when I tested the cables, but genuine cable did push up more power and the software was wrong as I have seen over 1.13A with USB Power monitor, but as said the real Genuine cable was better.
The Nexus 7 2013 micro USB cable that is short, performed the best, gave the max Amps out of all the cables. I will test my Monoprice 28/24 cables and update this thread.
Quick tests of chargers:
Car charger form Amazon,
PowerGen White Dual USB 4.2A (20W) Car charger Designed for Apple and Android Devices
I quickly tested to see if this thing will push past 1A and it did at the time I was testing with nexus 7 and its cable with the usb power meter, and It was pulling around 1.13A
Next up single wall charger, I saw this and had to buy!
Blackberry Folding Blade Charger for Playbook rated at 5v @ 1.8A! priced under $5!!!
I tested this one with the software on my S4, it quickly showed after few min pulling 1.4A and Galaxy charger showed maxed out 1900 on all!
I think this one wins for the cheapest and sturdy charger, just shy of 2A!, will become my work charger, the cable is nice and thick along with pretty good length 6ft+!
Next up I had to get me a family charger (4-5 port)
I get tired of short cables on wall chargers, so I went and got
Anker® 40W USB Desktop Charger
This charger claims a total of 40w for 5 ports! With intelligent device detection PowerIQ.
This charger so far (1 day use) has been great, I connected the S3 and the power meter showed 1A, I connected the S4 with the meter and was only getting 1.13-1.3A, the software did not show max, so here is the issue seems the usb monitor will cause the charger to not read the devices to there 100%, after taking it out and connecting it directly the galaxy charger showed maxed 1900mAh
The USB cable used was the nexus 7 one.
What I love about this charger, no lights! Perfect for me for overnight charging, also has standard power cord, the unit itself is quite compact too, now I can have short usb cables 1.5ft or 3ft ones and not worry about reach, as the charger can stay next to your devices, simply use conventional power cable extender on the charger unit, not on your usb devices!
I will conclude that it seems now since we are pushing past the usb spec for charging, that the shortest cable is best, be it 28 awg or 24 awg, and of course OEM’s already knew that, I am pretty sure that the OEMs are switching to 28/24 awg cables

if people are interested, I can designate some time and take few pics of the monoprice cables, and show why they fail, its obvious but need a good pic to show the reason, maybe we can find a way to fix them?
the cables are great, the connectors look great at first but are not so great
I just ordered the Anker 40W USB Desktop Charger on Amazon with same day shipping for $5.99. Thanks for your review!

that was even better bargain heh
the USB cable is as important as the plug. I use an ANKER 4-port plug with a factory S4 cable. It runs at 1900, same as if I used the factory S4 plug. I ran a whole experiment too. I had a USB cable IDENTICAL to my S$ cable, and it only charged at 320 with the same ANKER or S4 plugs. My S4 has a popup telling me to use a better charger
