[Q] Auto Airplane Mode App? - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys,
I'm in desperate need of an app that automatically turns on Airplane Mode when there is no signal for a while and then turns it on after a time and then automatically back off again for a while and keeps cycling until signal is found?
I checked out a few apps in the market but most of them are just scheduled to turn Airplane Mode on after a certain time and then either leave it on or turn it off and leave it off. I need it to do automatic cycling since I do a lot of subway travelling throughout my day and I am constantly in no signal zones.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

The problem here is no app has your paramaters to cycle through like you want. you can use apps like llama or locale though to change your mode automatically based on where you are. or you could try juice defender to turn your phones antenna's when you have your screen of if you dont use it much on the subway. other than that you may have to do this manually.

I checked out an app called NoBars Battery Saver and it does exactly what I need except the problem is it doesn't allow you to customize the signal search timeouts and Airplane Mode timeouts. Instead it has a short list of presets:
Signal search timeout
30 seconds
2 minutes
5 minutes
Airplane mode timeout
10 minutes
1 hour
Infinity
I'm fine with the shortest 30 seconds of signal searching before going to Airplane Mode but I'd like to set Airplane Mode timeout for 5 mins instead of 10 mins (which is a little too long for me as sometimes im in the subway for say 11 minutes and now I have to wait another 9 minutes for it to turn on again).
Does anyone know any other apps exactly like or similar to NoBars Battery Saver?

OOOk yeah ive seen that app, my mom actually uses it. but i dont think i ever found a similar one that let me customize. would be interested in this also in fact. any one?

I found another app called Auto Flight Mode but I'm reading mixed reviews about it and it is a paid app so I want to make sure it works before I get it. Anyone have experience with this app?

[REQUEST] [APP] Timer to Disable Silent/Airplane?

I want to take a nap, and not be bothered for at least a few hours. But I want to be woken up by calls later on (just not for a few hours). Is there any app that will disable silent mode or even better disable Airplane mode, on a timer?
IE Put my phone in Airplane mode, and automatically disable that X hours from now. Does such an app exist?
Just an idea... Passing out now...

Locale can do this, I believe.
So can settings profiles. Pay app though.
So does PhoneWeaver. Tried and tested.
I have the same idea at Paul. I have mine in Airplane mode while I sleep.
I hv been using Timeriffic. It has several timers depending on days and it has control over wifi/bluetooth/volume/brightness/airplane mode/etc. AND IT'S FREE!
Lately I've switched to StudioKUMA AirPlane Scheduler because it can keep your wifi on when it turns on the airplane mode (normally when u turn on airplane mode the wifi will be forced off). Free as well.
EDIT: Ops, sorry. I reread and found you need a timer instead of a scheduler... Ignore plz...

[APP] Tasker

I use Tasker for automating a lot of redundant tasks on my phone. I figured I would post a couple I'm using with hope that others will share with me some stuff they use it for.
action: Docked.
Tasks done when docked: Bluetooth on, wifi off, gps on, auto brightness set off [if time < 1800, Display Brightness set to 255 if time < 1800, pandora set on.
exit tasks: Bluetooth off, auto brightness on if TIME < 1800, pandora set off, gps off.
Action open Application Maps/Nav or any gps app.
Tasks done: GPS on
exit tasks done: GPS off.
action: phone face down
Tasks done: airplane mode on if time < 2200, all sounds off except for alarm
exit tasks: airplane mode off, all sounds revert to previous settings.
these 3 i use, if you have any others let me know. If you need help with the program let me know too.
here is where you can grab tasker.

Sounds something that I would definitly use. I beleive its a paid app, but still worth it. I'll look into it. Does it have settings for wifi e.g.- 1 touch WIFI on, because i'm using the stock wifi on/of toggle but I then have to go into wifi settings and actually see my phone connecting to my network in order for i to work and turn on.... ??????
Yeah there are settings for connecting to wifi. Mine does it automatically when I get home based on the gps. Works most of the time, had to turn it on manually a couple times because the gps wasn't on.

How do you set up an OR for the app launch context? I'm trying to get it to turn on GPS when I open Maps, Foursquare, Yelp, or Places, but it doesn't let me multi-select apps and if I add a context, Application isn't there.
Make it separate tasks.
make 1 for each app.
Foursquare - turn on gps. Turn off gps when exit.
Ect.
also, I guess there is a wiki with a bunch of samples I guess. I'm out at a remote beach on northern oahu right now, but if someone doesn't post it before me I'll post the link when I get home.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. It'd just be nice if you could have conditionals in the context. IF Yelp OR Foursquare OR Maps OR Places then ...
Post over there and make a feature request, they should put that in I agree .
Just bought Tasker and so far I like it. Can't seem to figure out how to do the following task though.
I need to set to static IP when on a certain wifi connection. I already have the IP set and the only thing that will need to be done is to toggle the static IP checkbox in the advanced setting of wifi. I know how to specify the wifi network but how can I make it toggle that checkbox/setting?
Thanks for any info.
i made a simple widget to toggle the screen brightness to two preset brightens for inside and direct sunlight.
i could not find an app that let me choose the brightness, they either made it full dark/bright.
i can't work out however to toggle a different widget icon to indicate on/off...
i've tried set icon but with no luck
its not really needed but would be good to have/know for future apps
also, can anyone explain how the HTTP (get info from net) works?
i want to try a few things but not really sure how it works
This app is the best app on the market... hands down. #Win

You should use "wifi near" as a condition instead of "gps". That way it just toggles you wifi on and off periodically and if it is near... it will connect.
Gps is so demanding on the battery... and not always accurate... as you see

I set my heaphones the same.. but at the same time, it cuts my media volume up (in case it was down) and when I unplug them... it returns my media volume back to it's previous value

I do the same except my volume goes down when I plug them in so I don't have music blaring in my ears.

I also have a profile that texts my gf a random message at a random time that is between 7:30 am and 7:40 am (so she don't think it's automated lol) every morning. I got that idea from LexusBrian
Again.. great app!
Here was I have got going on with tasker.
Car dock: gps on, bluetooth on, display always on, notification volume off. On exit they all do the opposite.
When home: wifi on. Exit wifi goes off.
At work: phone goes to vibrate for everything.
10pm to 545am: phone goes quiet.
I second it a best app ever. Wifi, gps, and bluetooth are never on when I don't need em. Come on you can't beat that. What a battery saver.

Tasker is an incredibly handy utility.
Here's the profiles I use:
GPSonForLocationApps - I think this one has already been covered by this thread.
WifiOnAtHome - I use the wifi near option... although I think it's causing issues with my 3G signal... it will occasionally turn on wifi to check if I'm at home which seems to turn off 3G. Still playing with this one.
LowVolumeDuringWorkHours - sets various volumes appropriately so I can still hear stuff but doesn't annoy folks working near by. I turn this on/off based on day of week and time of day. Upon exiting this profile it returns my volumes back to normal.
NoficationsOffAtNight - I turn off notifications at night and if my phone is plugged into AC.
SilentForMeetings - if I have a calendar entry where I'm marked as busy it turns my phone to silent mode.
Openwatch?
Hello
I am new to Tasker, and I'm starting to understand exactly how much you can do. Uses open watch a lot and have done a lot of settings to make my clock better. But I wonder if I can get messages from one app to my watch. The app is an ice hockey results service. And each time it becomes a goal, I get it as income message in the status bar. But can I get the message in the clock at the same time? Right now I just get a message in the watch which I've written, but would like it says in the status bar so you do not I pick up the phone to look at the result. Is there perhaps a few codes to enter, instead of my message is? Hope you understand me?
I have mine set to enable WiFi when I connect to a certain cell tower. Keeps the drain on my batter to nothing more than it was already at, and GPS is only enabled for about 5 minutes to and from the house. I'm sure the drain for that combined 10 minutes is much less than periodically checking the GPS or if a network is near.
I am turning off gps when I get to my home cell tower and turning on my wifi at the same time.
For my multimedia apps like pandora, I have my screen stay on when plugged to a power source.

[Q] How to increase standby time

Turn on airplane mode and make sure no apps are running in the background.
My standby time is fantastic...
The fact that this tablet does multi-tasking is both a blessing and a curse. When tethering via bluetooth, it doesn't die even if you're not using it. I left mine connected to my iphone at night and the next morning, both the tablet and the phone are discharged. I'm sure that there's a setting somewhere that will kill these processes after n minutes of inactivity but for now, make sure your connection is off (Airplane mode) and just kill all processes using the Advanced task killer.

hmm I have bluetooth tether on 24/7 and it barely drains anything... odd.
This might seem extreme, but I turn mine off if I know I won't be using it for several hours or more. Power-up is pretty quick when I do need to use it. I know it's not the ideal solution, but it has helped me a lot. Now it last for several days between charges instead of a day or so.

A question to all of you, lover of desire s

Hy to all
Does anybody of you have noticed that the device wakes up alone the display for a fraction of a second every 30 seconds. Have seen this thing happening in one evening, watching tv with light off. What is strange, is doing only when gsm is on, for example if I activate flight mode it stops.
Another strange phenomen is that, as far as I read the current widget the ma consumed in flight mode are bigger then in normal, with radio on. E.g. 16ma in normal with mobile data and WiFi off, only gsm on and around 60-80 ma in flight mode.
Can somebody explain how and why, and how I can trace that.
The phone is on default, so no S-off or route or anything, and also no branding, is bought on Vodafone but clean.

Hello, I'm afraid that I can't explain the screen flicker you're suffering from and I don't get it myself, but, I know that others have complained about it before, so there are existing threads that cover this, although I don't recall anyone linking it to only to when GSM is on, so you may have made some progress there !
Airplane mode....there is something very wrong on all our devices here as I find that Air plane mode consumes about five times the power that normal mode does. In fact on mine phone and wi-fi consumes five time less power than Airplane mode - which is just stupid.
I use Battery Monitor Widget over current widget as I find that CW clocks mA figures twice as high as BMW, you can use the maths function in CW to half the readings if you like the application. With phone and wi-fi idling my phone consumes about 6mA on CW = 12mA. In airplane mode the device consumes 35mA. Again there are plenty of other threads where this has been discussed but to my knowledge no one has yet solved it.
See here in this post regarding screen battery usage this is CW versus BMW is discussed
EDIT: the airplane issue doesn't appear to be RADIO related either as I've now used every radio there is including the latest one just leaked earlier today and the problem is still there - no change, so it's got to be ROM or kernel! Do people on non Sense ROMS, with non HTC stock kernels still suffer this problem?
I have the same issue with the screen flickering, it does not bother me that much but I noticed it. I looked around for a fix but came up with nothing.
If anyone knows how to fix this please post a reply.
Thanks.
I have said this in another similar post before....
Screen flicker can be caused by some Apps requiring the privilage to prevent the device from sleeping (basically a "Wake Lock"). If an App requiring that privilage has not be written properly, it causes the screen to flash on briefly, then back off again.
Whilst you may not find it annoying, it does actually increase wear on the backlight, as well as causes a spike in power consumption. Any momentary spike on the battery is a bad thing!
Take a look at what Apps you're running, find those which require the permission to prevent the device from sleeping, and begin either Force Closing them, or temporarily uninstalling them (one by one) until the Screen Flicker stops.
If you remove a certain App and the flickering stops, you know what the culpret is and you can report the bug to its devleoper(s)!
Come back with the same question
Hi all,
I came now back with the same question - screen flicker during sleep.
What do you find on your device?
I had been trying nearly all the roms available, and from what I had seen all do the same, from stock to the alfa tests with ICS.
I curios does nobody notice that, its only me?
No mater what applications are running or not (I kill them all - via running services not task manager) but the screen is still doing. I start to believe is normal for android, something the same like the consumption in airplane mode bigger then with the phone active (another thing completely abnormal).
Wryly is no solution for this.
PS. Just for my curiosity, regarding airplane mode, the tablets with no phone/3G capability, consume the same? I mean more then the one with 3G, when they sleep?
Respects!

The screen wake problem is well established now, and described by many users...and as far as i can see it only affects some devices (for example, ben_pyett is on Endymion - same as me, but hasn't reported a similar issue - and he's a pretty astute observer IMO). There was a thread where we had discussed it at length but i don't know where it's lost in all the cacophony on XDA.
EDIT : Found it!

AFAIK, it doesn't affect battery life, as i have stellar battery performance. And i'm almost always on Endymion, which is where i see this screen flash thingy mostly.

turning wifi automatically off

I have tried a few auto turn off apps on my transformer while screen is off but WIFI still stays on. These Apps work well on My Samsung galaxy.
Another thing I noticed is that everytime I set the WIFI disconnect policy to turn off wifi when screen is off. The setting goes back to "never". Not sure how it gets reset, and maybe thats why these apps do not work.
Any ideas?
revolver parts wit revolver rom, the revolver parts app let you turn of wifi automatic
I am on stock rom for now, until I read thru all of the forum and get comfortable with switching rom. I am rooted atleast and have CWM installed.
So is there any other app?
Auto airplane mode from the market. It turned off for me.
Try with Tasker
will try auto airplane mode but I need something that turns off wifi when screen goes off.
Also, afraid to buy tasker before I know it works.

Auto Airplane Mode will turn WiFi off when screen shut off.
I use it, work great. The one I use for some reason is not in the market any more
but there are others.
TRIED auto airplane and did not work.
I think the issue is that something always changes the setting to never turn wifi off . Instead of what I keep on setting it to disable wifi when screen is off.
Is there a app that is changing the wifi policy settings>?
green power app fixed my problem. found this out in another thread.
I'm using tasker with a profile to turn airplane mode on 5 minutes after display goes down. It doesn't sleep if there are certain apps which require internet connection (tunein radio for example) and turns off airplane mode for 1 minute every 30 minutes.
I'd never used tasker before, i own an Android phone too, but i found it simply amazing!
Seems like you have an app that wants to keep wifi on. If I were you, I'd try to get to the bottom of this and figure out which app is causing this issue to occur. In fact, the culprit sounds fishy.
