Hey Nexus peeps...
I just switched to the Nexus 2 4g coming from my trusty old Evo. I have to admit, things seem much different in this forum compared to the Evo. Mainly, the updates, stock roms, kernels and other things. Seems a bit more confusing.
I was a power user on the Evo, flash-a-holic you might say and was savvy enough to basically handle any issues without problem. Coming to the Nexus is presenting considerable challenge for me. I have a couple questions, any guidance or information is GREATLY appreciated while I settle in to my new home...
Current Set up:
Stock Rom (2.3.4 - GRJ06D)
James Bond Kernel for Stock Rom
What I would most like to do is get the recent OTA that keeps popping up. I understand that I cannot just accept it b/c I have CWM as my recovery, but I can't figure out exactly what item I need to DL and flash. I believe its
THIS ONE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
--The one noted as "GRJ22 from GRJ06D OTA"
So I would update that through CWM?
Also, how does the internal storage work on the Nexus? If I make a Nand Backup on the "SD Card", is that going to be a safe place to keep it? I worry since there's not actually an SD card on this phone.
Finally, any recomendations from users on alternative Roms (aside from stock)? I haven't gotten up the interest to flash any custom rom yet.. I was on Nightlies on my Evo so I'm kind of over CM atm. Plus this pure vanilla is kind of nice but I wouldn't mind checking out some other stuff.
As mentioned, any help/guidance/recommendations are GREATLY appreciated.
Awesome...
This isn't the most active forum. You can do alot of searching through the dev forums and learn alot. I'm a new comer to but welcome!

Yes I see... Thanks for the advice. I did go ahead and flash as I thought it should be and it worked flawlessly. Had a nandroid just in case.
Anyhow, I was unable to fight the CM urge so 15 minutes later I went ahead with 7.1 RC1... Back to CM I go.
I've been trying to download some new ROMS and Designgears page never comes up. just times out. am I missing something?

DG is no longer supporting the various ROMs he created for Captivate. From what I gather, he felt he'd gone as far as he could go to improve the basic Captivate OS, at least with Froyo. I'm not sure about Gingerbread, since I've never gone past using Cognition, being very happy with it.
However, if you indicate which ROMs you are interested in trying, someone should be able to upload a zipped version so you... or you can scan the Cognition threads themselves, or this Q and A. People have occasionally asked for and received versions of Cognition that were no longer directly available through the usual channels. Believe me, just because they're no longer supported, that doesn't mean they aren't still great ROMs.
ah. that explains a few things. I spent almost 2 hours searching forums and threads to find out. I had cognition before and am now trying some different ones. ok. now I know. thank you very much.
I believe Cog5 was DG's last call for the Captivate. He's moved on to brighter and better devices.
hmm, I had cog 3 for the longest time. if I can find 5 I'll give it a try.
Here is the Gingerbread Cognition 5 thread:

You aren't looking hard enough - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578
His Cog5 stays right on first/second page of Captivate Android Development forum.
Designgears moved on to the SGSII.
Last Froyo rom was 4.5.3, which was modified with all good things that can be done with source code.
Last GB rom was 5v2, which was based on a 2.3.3 Gingerbread Release.
Pinnacle from watsa, Version 1.2/3 was on KH3, a 2.3.4 GB release
Illuminance, Fasty, and others are based on KJ3, a 2.3.5 GB release, and the most recent Samsung leak.
Currently trying Illuminance.
I got some old sre versions

thanks for all the leads guys. and Illuminated one. I spent 2 hours going through hundreds and hundreds of messages in who knows how many threads. don't tell me I didn't try hard enough.
Have you pm'd DesignGears? He's still on xda, just a different forum (I think).
not yet. I not wedded to Cognition. just wanting to try out different ROMS and try to learn more about all this by doing. all kinds of different apps with different version depending on what your doing, different kernels. different ways of getting into download and recovery that sometimes work. it gets a bit confusing. a lot of this is written with people who know what they are looking at in mind.
not whining. just a bit frustrated.
I didnt know what I was looking at, when I first started modding my phone. I just kept staring at it and reading until it started to make sense. And if/when I buy another phone, I will have to start all over again.
you mean I have to buy another phone!!!! (silly grin). my wife gets this one when I upgrade. (angry birds addict) but at least I'll have some basics. I learn better by doing and using visual things like videos. search Youtube for videos about flashing Captivates! then you have to sort the good from the bad. I got lucky with MobileTechvideos.
Yeah, that's where I started. I think the s2 isn't that different, but I looked in the Inspire forum once and it's a completely different language.

thats the entire point of XDA. we all came here and LEARNED about all this stuff. its expected that other people that come here are here to learn. not make their phone cool
I would agree. Cool phone is just a perk
He moved on a couple months ago to work on SGSII ROMs. Last GB update was Cog 5v2 on KH3 (I think), but no dev took over his project. Apex/Pinnacle is also no longer being developed by Watsaa.
Fasty works for me as Logic updates it frequently. The prior FireFly dev is doing great work on Fusion (ATT) and Mosaic (i-9000). Tradeoff is that ATT GB ROMs are not open sourced, so the development is not as extensive as i-9000, but at least you get the audience chip support with ATT ROMs.
Cyanogen/MIUI are also excellent options.
I'm running GR_12 at the moment. cyanogen and continuum are already on my HD. I'll take a look at Mosaic. be nice to finaly be able to use the power button as a shutter button.
I'm ROMing my phone to get better use and efficiency. not to make it cool, I find all the themes and pretty prettys to be a poor use of the processing power and battery runtime.
Hi, I am around, on hiatus from everything atm
I am new to flashing, but I want to get ICS on my Samsung Captivate which will not receive an official 4.0 update from Samsung. There are multiple options for ICS roms; the two I have heard most about are Doc Master's and Team Hacksung's CM9 (alpha). Please leave comments as to the general stability for the most up to date versions of the roms if you have experience with them. I am not interested in a buggy rom; i want one that is stable and that has most/all functions. I am a little bit confused on both forums for these roms how stable these roms are. Especially Doc Master's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462035). It does not list any specific bugs for the versions; does this mean everything works? I'm new to this so I am confused.
Also, if I would flash one of these ICS roms and decide it is too buggy, or I don't want it anymore, can I get back to my stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 (what I currently have). If so, how? Is the best way to make a nandroid backup of my stock rom (does that work for stock?)? If not, what is.
I appreciate your help.
Help please!
Bump. I really would appreciate any help.

ICS rom
I have flashed the 2 roms you asked about. I liked them both until I found Dark Knights ICS 4.0.4. Everything works and it is smooth and fast. I have tried others also, I also liked MIUI but Dark Knights is the best so far for me.
If you search XDA you will find the answers to your other questions. You just have to be willing to read a few threads. When I started I screwed up just about every way you can think of and someone was willing to help me out.
If you go to You tube and search for videos on how to flash your Captivate, many will come up (I am a visual person). Look for videos from Josh at Mobile Tech Videos. He knows what he is talking about and is a great help.
It would probably be better if you posted this question in the captivate forums.
I would post the link but I don't have the power to do that yet.
As for your question, I am currently running the CM9 Alpha version and am loving it. It has been my daily driver for quite some time and I would definitely recommend using this ROM.
All of your questions can be found in the captivate forums. You'll have to read a lot but it's better to read more so you know what you're getting yourself in to.
Hey all,
So, over at the Sidekick 4G forums it is pretty much a ghost town. Some of you know this already, but as far as development goes, we are stuck on Froyo with a half-port of Gingerbread. Bad news, I don't think there is much going for us now, I haven't seen new posts for weeks.
I still love my Sidekick, and I recently acquired a couple extra devices to use, so I decided would like to try to make something myself.
YES, I kind of just dove in with this, and I have very minimal experience in code. (Some html and small jscript) But I really want to get this dang thing off of Froyo. It would be an amazing device on ICS or JB, I just feel it. And I know it has to be possible somehow right? The G1 has it, why not the SK?
Now, I have started looking into kernel development, and I have compiled a working Stock kernel for the Sidekick, and even figured out little things like disabling or enabling the boot animation. But what I really want to do....is climb out of the hole and try to port ICS to this device. I am a noob, I have MUCH to learn, but I have time on my hands. ;D
As far as building an ICS kernel for the phone, and hopefully one day an ICS rom for it, I am at a loss of ideas. I have done lots of searching already, found many tutorials, read them plenty of times. But I don't exactly know how to get on track... could I ask for some guidance?
Any response at all is appreciated
Hey guys been away from the XDA scene for a while, first I got my Galaxy S1 a year or two back and knew nothing about android, a bad 2.3.3 update brought me through the bricked phone Nightmare which I was able to fix on my own with some help from this forum. Since that day I've been playing a lot with these devices had a lot of fun fixing them, and modifying them.
I had already been running Cyanogen for a while on my S1, and picked up an S2 i9100M last year for about 30$ from a friend, great condition but the 2.3.3 was something I had got used to not using anymore. Installed CM on the S2 and been running it since.
The phone runs really well but I have some recent concerns I noticed while traveling and such. Specially the WIFI reception is one of the biggest things I noticed a huge difference with more recent devices running stock roms and IPHONES that all get stable 2-3 bars when I struggle to get reception.
Is this linked to a weakness in CM? Is this just a device that is starting to get a little old for today's wifi appliances? Bear with me here, I notice the custom roms section has a bunch of roms but CM is not listed. Have people moved on and CM is a thing of the past? What are the biggest differences I might experience when changing to a whole complete CUSTOM ROM, what things might I dislike?
Thanks for taking the time to clarify things with me!
