Gtab gingerbread video drivers
Do these have to come from nvidia?
Speaking as a person who knows absolutely nothing about anything, it would seem to me that if all these marvelous roms can be developed by the guys who call themselves "Devs", then these same dudes should be able to code video drivers for gingerbread simply by porting over the existing froyo ones (which work marvelously by the way).
I'm sure you are not all lazy. You just haven't thought of this idea yet.
No need to thank me. Your welcome!

Toss out some more wisdom.. I'm currently rounding up the easter bunny, a couple unicorns, and at least a dozen leprechauns and we're forming a development team. We're awaiting your next command.. EB will out for a few weeks due to some scheduling issues and a nasty NDA lawsuit/tieup with the lollipop guild. But we'll get it done!
spoke to madhatter and cheshire cat. they promised GB &HC nvidia drivers by midnight.

Quoted for truth.
I've seen decompiled drivers. It haunts my dreams.
I guess these Gingy drivers are the new Honeycomb.
Closing this before it gets WAY out of hand.
Ok so my last thread got closed down...... but not before some entertaining responses.
But I understand that not everyone gets my sense of humour (take my wife....please)-sorry couldn't help myself..from now on this thread will be SERIOUS- devoid of humour.
The original question remains. Do we need Nvidia for these drivers?
Can the existing froyo ones be used to fashion gingerbread drivers or is that completely out of the question?
Someone alluded to an NDA? Does this make such an undertaking illegal? If so then the idea is dead in the water...enough said.
If it is do-able, then I, as one who is unskilled, would like to spearhead the collection to make an offering to the developer(s) who can make this happen.
So...thoughts?
SERIOUS DISCUSSION ONLY!
Can you please link to the other thread you were talking about? I'd like to read it.

Here you go.....
@goodintentions
Oh, my old friend. Good to see you back and stirring the pot again.
So I think it is possible for people who aren't Nvidia to write these drivers. I'm an Ubuntu user and I know that I use open source drivers all the time, written by the community. However, I do think that much is needed from the original hardware manufactures in order for those drivers to be written. Thats what we haven't received from Nvidia yet. However, in my couple of years with Android ROMs and watching forums, I've never seen anyone write drivers for any phone or tablet. True, I could have missed something. I think that writing a driver for a printer and writing a driver for 3D acceleration are a bit of a different animal. Could they? Maybe. But if they could, don't you think they would have?
I'd love 3D on the Tab for Gingerbread, but I'm willing to be patient and not harass these fine people who bring us such awesome software.

And as for you...you salty dog. You better watch yourself or you'll get banned before you can say, well, Gingerbread drivers! The discussion is welcome, I'm sure, but keep in mind that the devs can only work with what they are given. Let's help and give feedback rather than starting a good ol' fashioned Jim Leahy ****storm.
Notwithstanding my use of the devil Smiley, and my admitting that I know nothing about anything, I thought (wrongly) that my post was obviously tongue in cheek.
I have to admit I spit out my coffee this morning laughing at some of the responses but as has been established, I am a wee bit twisted.
I was surprised that the thread was closed and would really be shocked if I was banned!
Not to get sidetracked....this thread is meant to be SERIOUS. So community made drivers don't break NDA? Can code from the available froyo drivers be used?
If a dev finds my questions annoying. Let me know.
I am aware of how lucky we are to have them despite my failed attempt at humour.
Ok, all joking aside. Its a fair question. Code here and there can be tweaked to suit our needs, so why not drivers? How about you dive in and make it happen? My guess is that the way Gingerbread interacts with the kernel interacts other the drivers is lightyears away from the way Froyo plays. At least that's what's I've taken away from the discussions about Gingerbread. I think it is a matter that takes more intervention from Nvidia than we realize. Again, if it was doable I think that a dev would have piped up and said that they were at least working on the issue. Right now our best bet is letting Nvidia know by kindly emailing that there is a user base eager for drivers. Gently. And leave the devs alone. Really. And the banning thing is for real. Remember that you're here essentially for free, and so is their work.
So donate! And write us some damn drivers so that others can donate to you!

Alright, I'm going to bite here.
1.) Regarding the comment about an NDA. nVidia has many patents on the technology that resides inside their drivers, as well as other technology that they don't want the outside world seeing. In Linux and with Android, they're just going to supply binaries, unless a partner signs an NDA, giving them access to the source code.
2.) All it takes is a slight change in the interaction between the kernel and the driver, to break it. Saying "just take the Froyo drivers and put them in Gingerbread" is severely understating the effort. If it were as easy as you think, it would have been done by now.
3.) Legally speaking, reverse engineering a driver, or decompiling code can break the DMCA law. I won't comment on my opinion of this law, but needless to say, the latest trouble the GeoHot got into over reverse engineering the PS3, speaks enough to the hesitation you'll find in people doing these things moving forward... at least in publishing them. The crime becomes even more severe the second a dev takes one of the "donations" setup here. Now they are profiting from the act.
4.) Both nVidia and AMD are starting to release open source drivers for their hardware in linux, but the open source drivers are much different than the closed source.
Lastly, this is just a comment. Look at how many people post here with issue of installing ROMs, just because they can't follow simple directions. Writing low level code for a kernel is not a simple task for people professionally code, let alone "enthusiasts". It takes an intimate knowledge of how linux works, then the subtleties of the changes Android has made to the kernel, then a lot of educated guesses and research, because all of the detailed specs and documentation just aren't made available to the enthusiasts.
End of the day, unless you're willing to fork over some serous cash to one of the devs on here, I wouldn't ask "why can't you just do this, you must not have thought of it, right?". Chances are, they are already 10 steps ahead of you and thought about that and quickly dismissed it, 6 months before you even knew what Android was.
Thanks h3llphyre for your response. You have made clear some of the things that I was uncertain about and was trying to get straight. Most importantly, that there are some legal issues surrounding what I am proposing and that the difficulty level may not make such an undertaking worthwhile.
Your last paragraph still leaves me greatly dismayed that I am greatly misunderstood.
Rest assured that I have donated to devs here and elswhere for their work and, as a person who cannot, greatly appreciate those who can.
My original post was meant to poke fun at those who come on here with a sense of entitlement demanding things like this. If you read other posts written by me in other threads you'd see this. Indeed if you re-read my original thread (with the devilish smiley) you'd see where I was coming from.
I felt like a looser that my original post was soooo misunderstood. I feel like an even bigger loser having to explain it.
Merging and reopening after receiving this from the OP....

Hey Jerdog,
I THINK most people got my tongue in cheek humour in my thread about gingerbread video drivers being built from the ground up.
Did you really have to close the thread? Behind the humour was what I thought was a legitimate question.
Someone alluded to an NDA issue with this being done. I am fully aware that if these could be produced either easily or with some effort the devs here would do it.
My thread was an attempt to gain some understanding of how complex this undertaking would be. Could it be done? Would it break an NDA and thus be illegal? Is it just an onerous task where the unskillled (like myself) could donate money and be available for beta testing for a dev willing to undertake it.
Could the thread be re-opened with this PM pasted in for those that don't get or appreciate my brand of humour?

Hi guys,
I am looking to add the touch flo cube on to my friend HTC TyTn II for him.
I understand that his one came unlocked and he likes his current firmwire that came with it with his operator settings.
Therefore, i am wondering if it is possible to add the Touch Flo gesture and cube without having to do hardspl or any other steps require to add software to the phone.
Is it possible just to add the 2 cab's for these two peices of software and install them on to the phone via the memory card?
Advice would be appriciated massively as i really do not want to mess his phone up.
Thanks in advance
Jason
You have 200+ posts, 6 phones, been around for 9 months and you're still asking questions that we'd expect from a 10 post n00b?
Go search for your answer... Someone should remove your senior status
Oh, while you're at it, listen to http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting... I've done some additional research only to discover that you have 29 selfishly written threads begging for answers when I'm sure you could have just asked on an existing thread or searched for...

thanks again for your help.

what i want wondering is if it is possible to add "TFloCube" and "FTouchFlo Configurator" on to the TyTnII via .cab and if there is a need to use hardspl.
this is what i would like to add

i understand that an option is to flash a new rom, but since his current ROM has operator features on it, its rather difficult to go down that path.
therefore, are there .cab's to add TFloCube?

what is your problem? i obviously need help thats why i post. I still havent found the .cab's which i need. arent forums a place you go to, to find help? As i said, not every one has strong computer literacy like you, why dont you give people a break?
i'll take it that your having a bad day mate. why not we just stop it here before it get immature.
if someone could people tell me what i want to do is possible ( add touch flo cube via .cab's without the need of flashing a new rom) i would appriciate it very much.

By Kyphur,
I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

What happened to the ICX game launcher. I looked on their website and couldn't find it and the threads closed, did they scrap it?
sent from my r800i using XDA app.
Good question.
I remember DeanBoro said that his Xperia PLAY's screen was broken, but that was like half a week after the topic was closed by request.
I do hope it eventually comes together soon though (and by soon, I definitely don't mean Gameloft's interpretation of the word) because I'd done nearly everything but completely delete the official launcher in anticipation of this customizable one.
I messaged DeanBoro about it after I saw the thread closed and this was his response.
"This is still under development but it is slow development at this moment because I am no longer working on it as my Play has been broken. HOWEVER another member of the team is working on it but ICX have alot of things to do at this moment in time i will inform you if there is any progress."
So I will be patient and if it comes out it comes out.

Thanks for posting this jgregoryj1.
As he quoted above. My play has been shattered and as I don't really have an income of any sort at this moment in time apart from college allowance I do not have funds at this moment (£50) which is needed to repair the phone screen. Therefore I have handed the project over to a good friend of mine who has continued development of it although the development is slow as he has many things on his plate at this moment in time.
I would say give it another 1-2 weeks and there should be a updated thread of his with information about the Launcher. ALSO I know hes a very talented developer therefore I think he will most likely port it to all android phones.
Thanks

Hi Nick, DeanBoro, just wondering how this was going or if it still is...? Agreed.. could not have said it better. With attitudes like that its a wonder devs make anything at all. When I enquired to DeanBoro some time ago about this he replied to my email and said that I was the only one he replied to because it was a sincere enquiery, his mesage box was full of ungrateful jerks chewing him out for not having released this ICX Game Launcher. Also DeanBoro does NOT have a Xperia PLAY anymore as his broke and he has no means of getting a replacement jsut yet so PEOPLE STOP B!TCHING, he did say several times that he had turned the project over to another trusted developer that is on the ICX team but that due to time and other responsibilities whether or not it gets released is out of his hands..............nuff said....
SO BE PATIENT............ I will continue every now and then enquire on this thread in hopes of some news but I am not going to write up a$$hole remarks, if people want to be like that why dont YOU work on it, then when people realize that its a difficult time consuming task and its not released others can harp on you about it....PATIENCE goes a LLLLLOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG WWWWAAAAAYYYYY, and you'll live longer......

These are the type of unhelpful comments that put developers off
Everybody on these forums has a life
Projects are started some go to completion and some dont
Promises are made some are kept and some aren't
I am sure that always with the best of intentions
Everything is provided for you free of charge be grateful if you get it, be understanding if you don't.
I f you really want it go and learn and do it yourself, the same way the developers did. and then you can share it with us.
Or maybe you won't finish your project and then I can say that you lie and are full of s**t and we will see how you feel about it.

Actually, you make a good point. However, I didn't say anything bad about the devs. I only said the app was vaporware - meaning that, while the devs may have had good intentions, the app was never released. After several promised release dates came and went, it became pretty obvious this was a tougher nut to crack than first imagined. Then the main dev ran into hardware issues. Then there were NO ETAs and no news coming out for weeks. Thus it became obvious the project had been shelved. So... Vaporware.
No disrespect intended to the devs. Heck, I'd rather have them working on ROMs any day.

Taking your ball and leaving and in the process removing a thread because of butthurt. I was hoping after you guys realized thrashing on a fourteen year old kid in that other thread is not acceptable and shows how immature the whole lot of you are, you would stop.

If you still don't get why developers leave this forum, you lose.
Spending time trying to wrangle the forums and keep our threads clean is the reason you don't have MIUI or CM-anything.
Respect.

1. Age doesn't matter.
2. What comes out of your mouth at any age is what matters.
3. Can you seriously stop with these posts dude, you talk big even reported me to the mods no? Leave Raver alone it's his thread if he wants to remove it, then it's his work to remove. You have no say in what he does and you don't know why he removed it so don't assume it's because he got butthurt.
Hopefully mods remove the thread and give you a strike.
Eollie
Most of us don't think poorly of devs at all. Quite the opposite actually. We think poorly of people like you who feel a need to stand on a soapbox and tell the rest of us how to act. If you feel that need as it seems you do maybe focus your energies elsewhere. Like Big Brother or some other such charity where you can impart your moral and social ideas on someone who may actually give a ****. The rest of us here are adults, including airfluip, and will act how we feel accordingly. I fully stand behind Bryan and Raver. To coin an old line "If your not part of the solution your part of the problem."
@bryan cool you know how to copy and paste. Actually the fact you cant ignore the noise and just focus is why we dont have the roms like other phones. When you guys have bad days you come here and thrash people for whatever reason you can find.
@erikmm You are correct age has nothing to do with anything. Until a grown man starts berating a child. If this was something being done in public place there would be people like me stepping in telling the grown ass man to shut up and act like a adult. Yes the child would be corrected too but you cant expect do as I say not as I do.
@hechoen There are more people that have left this place based on the reaction of the current developers than you would even care to believe. Look at the devs that have left. Read their threads. You dont see them posting things like have been posted in the past four months. Whitehawkx just stopped posting period he ignored the noise and did what he did best and develop. I truly believe if you cant ignore the noise then you shouldnt be trying to develop period. This happens every where. Doesnt matter if you get paid or not. Either do it because you like it or dont do it at all.
I wish I had better options when I bought my phone. I only bought this phone because it appeared to have better development than the other options I found at the time. I count the days until I can get a different phone. And Im sure most of you are counting them with me.
Thanks for treating me like everyone else hechoen.

Eollie, you're a twit.
The only way you'd possibly be right would be... oh, wait, nevermind... there isn't a way.
I come back to the forums less and less. I stopped testing new roms, stopped providing feedback, not because of the attitude of the devs, but because of the same BS that leads up to threads like the one you posted.
These guys come in here and do their thing for free mostly, because they can, and because they like to do it.
Then they get crapped on and it stops being fun.
I have my own side gigs and hobbies, and when people start demanding I change this or that, in work I freely created for my own enjoyment, they get a lot worse treatment from me than these forums have seen from the developers.
I can empathize with them...
It's their hobby, their fun, if someone doesn't like what they produce, or the speed at which they produce it, then that someone needs to do it themselves.
Study, learn, and crank out their own stuff, the way they want it, and then let's see how they like the *****fest that happens around here...
People don't leave because the devs are being dickish, the devs leave because 'Joe User' is being dickish.
Don't forget where you are, when I look at the top of the page I see XDA-Developers. Not XDA-Whinyassdemandingendusers.
@Bryan, I was happy to see you come back, but I wouldn't have a single harsh thing to say if you packed up and left again.
@Raver - if you're still reading over here... I enjoyed your work, and remember, Joke 'em if they can't take a f*.
I wrote this post before clicking on all of Bryan's links... now I realize I was being redundant, but screw it, I wrote it, and I'm still PO'd enough to think it's needs said again.

I agree with this post completely I am that same exact guy and yes. It probably was my fault for getting MIUI closed because I was sticking up for someone but I guess that's not the appropriate thing to do when someone tells someone else to GTFO. But now I have to "think" before I say something because someone told me to.. hmm.

@Core618 flame on dude.
If you think I dont appreciate the time and effort put into what is done then you are wrong. I do. Just because this is xda-developers doesnt mean the developers have the right to act like butthurt little tards.
If your not disgusted at how grown men trashed a fourteen year old kid then something is wrong with you. Leading by example and teaching is what they should have been doing. Instead it resorted to banning him from irc and then coming to xda to talk trash on him. Today because somebody had a bad day/night they pick up and start it again. Then when somebody steps up and says something in defense they get trashed and lo and behold the miui thread is closed..

That's not true, you're only a lemming if you join in not knowing what it's all about.
Most of the people bashing you have a brain of their own, and read your needless thread and said to themselves "He's wrong."

Make your Android Free of Ad's in apps and increase Browser loading times.*Updated 6/2/2012*
-First off remove the ".zip" Extension (Had to add it to upload here)
-Next transfer to device's SD Card.
-Move to the System/etc folder via Root Explorer or equivalent and overwrite the existing host file.
-Change Permissions to rw-r-r and reboot.
-Enjoy an Ad Free Experience
-This Will Also Make Your PC Ad Free (If You Tether). No More Loading Useless Add's, In Turn Speeding up PC Browser Loading Times Using Less Bandwidth!
*To revert back, just delete my Host file and reboot. The OS will rewrite the original.
I will add to this file as I come across newer Ad's
*Yes This Can Be Done With Several App's, But I like My Space and Free Ram*
(Tinker, Tinker, Tinker, That's What It's All About)
Awesome, willl have to do this once my phone arrives. However, do you actually mean Reduce browser loading times??

Apologies to OP, but quick Adfree Android question: is there documentation for it somewhere? I checked out bigtincan.com and it doesn't have anything, and on the Android Market^H^H^H Google Play site there's very little by way of documentation. I think it just did its job, but it presents a lot of choices and it would be good to know what they all do.

badass dev? when is he coming?
anyways in all seriousness the point that k0nane was trying to make i believe was fully justified. by using nicks tweak you rely on him updating it, which from the looks of it... doesnt seem to be happening. what does android being open source have to do with helping or not helping? as far as i can see there was an alternative given thats all, no different than if i made a huge giant post about how to use alogcat and get your msl. which works fine but there is an easier way of just using getprop.
so far from what ive seen of this community is a bunch of crying on how there are no roms/kernels etc. we had one blaze owner in teh irc for teh longest time. helping with root/recovery and whenever starskyrob had a moment to test his rom. everyone claims to want cm7/cm9/aokp/ics yet i havent seen anyone except (forgive me for misspelling your name if i did) dr4stic even try to compile. if you want good things to happen to your device then you need to step forward, look into rom development, learn how to compile the kernel from source. if you cant/arent willing to put the time in then find someone who is ive mentioned all around this forum no dev is gunna give up their high end device to go buy and work on the blaze.
myself and k0nane are on sprint it just happened to be that we like to go around and help phones that dont seem like they are gunna get the big name treatment. i tweeted at my buddy mikeyinid (we worked together on the nexus s back in the day) see if he wouldnt mind helping you guys on out...

And that is 100% respected. I am not only talking Bout this post, rather all of his post that have followed one of nicks. I am glad you guys helped. But that doesn't give the right to treat others in a condescending manner. Nick has done amazing work on the vibrant and now has this phone and wad helping this man. Once the man got what he needed ( because like you stated, he nor you have the device) he was out. Then started treating him like this. Shabby, problem wasn't with you. I just had to step in and defend nick because he is a bad ass dev.

I personally think a lot of the problem is the average user's interpretation of T-mobile sales reps.
I mean, I knew the S2 had a very large rom community especially because it's a very popular phone. I was led to believe by T-mobile that the phone is pretty much just an S2, but with a smaller size screen.
If you compare the phone's features and specifications, you'd be a fool to not agree.
But as it turns out, as it pertains to roms, nothing could be further from the truth.
Shame on us, the average user, for not realizing the golden rules with salespeople:
1: They'll tell you what you want to hear.
2: Most of the time they don't know what they are talking about anyway.
3: Often times when you need to buy a phone, you've not exactly been planning on it, so you have to do it hastily. This was certainly true for me.
4: Custom roms are of course never able to be supported or recognized by the carriers, they pretty much pretend they don't exist, and for good reason. Most people aren't really careful enough to be doing it, even for the "simple" methods.
5: Rom maker's ability to communicate instructions is not always clear, and yes, this can have a detrimental impact to a person, especially if they are not experienced with the process. Seriously, half of the roms I've looked at for Android phones have glaring instruction errors, and even if it gets pointed out by another person, rather than update their instructions they'll just reply, "Yeah, sorry about that" The problem is, that clarification is often times on the 40th page of the thread. Sigh.
6: And this is my number one reason........
A lot more people should be getting more and more fed up with carriers who impose limitations on phones. Seriously, if it wasn't for all this carrier and manufacturer ego-wagging, the user experience would be better for both the tweaker crowd, and the stock crowd.

I appreciate the help with root and CWM but not the comments that follow all of mine. I have Saturdays to work with this device, so I am limited with time. I got to the point where I felt like baking for my wife and I ...= less drama. Ill be more than happy to post a "bootable , Functional Rom. But it will be redirected here: http://www.android-engineering.com/index.php
Sorry I can't sit here 24/7 I work 6 day's a week and spend the extra time with my 3 kids. I got to a point where I was neglecting my fam and was staying on the PC trying to keep up with 5 Rom's. Something had to give. What am I not updating? Is there a need? This will be put into my rom instead of an extra app. If something needs updating when I update a rom it will be done with each release. If it is unappreciated just delete the thread.

Hey there! I’m guessing you've got yourself a shiny new HTC One X/XL, and you've heard about this thing called "rooting" and how it supposedly can let you do all sorts of things that your carrier won't let you do, or something like that. You arrived here a little while ago from Google or by clicking a link in some blog, and you're now nosing around trying to figure out what you're supposed to do.
But stop! Wait! You've skipped over the most important question: Should you even be here in the first place?
This is not a trivial question. Making modifications to the software on your phone is not like getting your car painted or putting on some new rims or a spoiler. It's much more analogous to replacing the fuel injectors, or modifying the intake, or changing the valve timing. If you don't know what you're doing, there's a very real chance you can render your phone permanently inoperative.
This post is not going to explain how to root, unlock, or do anything else to your phone, because there are already several other threads in the Development section about that (and no, I'm not linking to them—way too soon for that). The purpose of this post is to help you determine whether you should do it at all, and if so, what you need to know beforehand.
We're going to start by taking a short quiz.
1. Which is the most accurate assessment of your comfort level with computers and electronics?
a. I keep the Geek Squad on speed-dial.
b. I generally know what I'm doing, but I'm careful not to get in over my head.
c. I'm the guy my friends and family come to when they have computer problems.
2. What is Linux?
a. It's, um, a computer thing.
b. It's the operating system upon which Android is based, but I had to go to Wikipedia to look that up.
c. chmod 004 linuxfordummies.docx
3. How do you feel when your computer or some other gadget isn't working the way you want it to?
a. It's a royal pain in the ass.
b. It's not the end of the world, but I can do without it.
c. It's an opportunity to learn and problem-solve.
4. Which most accurately characterizes your relationship with your smartphone?
a. Um, relationship? It's a phone—I just need it to work.
b. I like to play around with the settings and find interesting apps.
c. I'm not happy unless I've tweaked and customized it enough that I feel it's a good reflection of who I am as a person. Also, this reflection changes by the week.
5. You're in the middle of trying to solve a particularly frustrating problem with your computer when your spouse/significant other announces that s/he wants to have sex. What do you do?
a. Drop everything and seize the booty.
b. Curse your computer under your breath and head for the bedroom.
c. Reply, "Sorry, honey, can you give me ten more minutes?"
Give yourself 3 points for each "c" answer, 1 point for each "b", and subtract 3 points for each "a". Then total up your score and check the chart below:
13-15: Welcome, brother! You may proceed.
11-12: You'll probably be all right, but be careful. You may be setting yourself up for more frustration than all this is really worth.
10 or less:
Stop now, head over to Android Forums, and don't look back. Trust me, you'll be much better off in the long run.
…
Still here?
Okay. Just because you're coming in with the right attitude and background doesn't mean you aren't still going to get yourself in serious trouble. Before going any further, there are several rules you must commit to memory.
1. Do Not Make Any Changes to Your Phone Until You Have a Good Understanding of What You're Doing
You wouldn't go under the hood of your car and start rewiring things and rerouting hoses based on some vague understanding of something you read on the Internet, right? You shouldn't do the same thing to your phone.
This is the reason that “One-Click” and “All-in-One” solutions should be scrupulously avoided, no matter how attractive they may be to you at the moment.
I cannot stress this too much. Using these tools allows you to skip over important learning processes and avoid learning things you really need to know. They make it much easier for you to get into a situation you have no clue how to get out of (and we’ll come back to that below). You’re better off in the long run skipping the one-click tools and taking the time to learn how to do things manually. Basically, you pay cash now, or pay later with interest.
At a minimum, before you do anything, you should be able to explain these three concepts:
-What root access means
-What you're changing when you unlock your bootloader
-What you're replacing when you flash a custom ROM or kernel
How do you find all this out? That's the next point.
2. Become Your Own Expert
You're probably feeling pretty intimidated right now looking at all these discussions throwing around terms, abbreviations, and acronyms that make no sense to you. That's normal—in fact, it's a good sign. If you're not intimidated, you should probably leave now, because you're lacking the sense of caution that will keep you out of trouble.
You're naturally going to be drawn to people who appear to know what they're doing. Be very careful about this. Some do know what they're doing, and some only think they do. The problem is that it can be very hard to tell them apart. That's why the worst thing you can do is go into a thread and start asking, "What am I supposed to do here?" before you know enough to be able to weigh the answers you get.
You may get help from someone who knows the answer you're seeking, and you may find someone who's just a recent noob feeling flush with a little new-found expertise. Or, worst of all, you may have the bad luck to run into someone who enjoys tricking noobs into bricking their phones. These folks are thankfully rare, but they do exist.
Ultimately, you've got to do your own learning, not piggyback on someone else's. That leads to our next rule.
3. Google is Your Friend
Yeah, I know, it's a cliché. But it's a cliché because it's true.
Your experiences are not new. Your questions, almost certainly, have been answered before (and in the case of most noob questions, hundreds or thousands of times before). You should start by reading the threads here, but every time you come across a concept or term you're not familiar with, flip to another window and Google it. "How to X" and "What does X mean" are your two most powerful tools. Use them often. (If you're not proficient enough with Google to manage this, you've got no business modding your phone anyway.) Bit by bit, you'll start to feel less lost and start developing the context to understand what people are talking about.
But didn't I just say not to trust what people tell you?
Yes. However:
4. Trust the Hivemind
That rule applies individually, not collectively. In fact, gauging collective experiences is an excellent way to see what's what. When a new exploit, ROM, or mod gets posted, there is invariably a flow of responses as people try it out. Pay close attention to these discussions before you do anything.
There are almost always a few bugs and updates to anything new. That alone shouldn't deter you too much. But it's best to wait until you start seeing people posting praise, thanks, and confirmation that their phones are working well before you dip your feet in the water.
But you're still not there yet. Just because other people are having success doesn’t mean you will.
5. Don't Do Anything to Your Phone That You Don't Know How to Undo
Who are all these people rushing to act as guinea pigs? By and large (there are exceptions), these are experienced modders who know how to get themselves out of any trouble they get into. In general, if you know what you're doing, you can take your phone back to stock without too much effort. But reverting some of these changes often depends on doing things in the right order, making backups before you start, and so on.
All of us were noobs once, and most of the people here are willing to help out new users with the right attitude. But few things are more frustrating than someone who jumps on a new mod or rom, and then posts, "That didn't work, I think I’m bricked, OMG what do I do??"
You need to figure that stuff out beforehand.
Also, it's worth pointing out that everyone makes mistakes. You're going to make a mistake at some point, probably several. Proper planning and preparation will minimize the fallout when you do.
But—there is another "but" here, and it’s a big one.
6. You May Kill Your Phone
Modding your phone carries a certain risk. Phones get permanently bricked around here on a regular basis, especially when new mods and tools get released. No matter what you do, no matter what precautions you take, there is a possibility you may render your phone permanently unusable, with nothing left to do but return it and hope you can get a replacement (and hope your carrier won't realize what you did).
This risk applies to everyone. Even experienced devs have been known to brick phones because they forgot a critical step to some routine process.
If you're not comfortable taking that risk, or you can't afford to deal with the consequences, you need to leave. Period. You've been warned. You'll get sympathy (unless you did something stupid and won't own up to it), but don't expect anyone to reimburse you, least of all the dev who posted the tool you were trying to use. It won't happen, and asking will just get you a lot of derision.
Got all that? Good luck, and happy modding.
Wow that is the greatest post I've ever seen. Gave me a good laugh.
Edit: I've gotta agree with the fact that using one click solutions to root etc really doesn't help you learn because I have almost messed my phone up on a few occasions and without knowing the basics of adb I would have been a goner. There is no one click solution to fixing your problems...

Thanks, guys. I actually wrote most of this quite a while ago, but wasn't motivated to post it until the recent influx of noobs.
Nice post.

It's a funny post, but r-tards can pick up a part time job rooting phones.
Id have to agree on the one click deal also, im also leary of the aroma installer and hub now also. i know its very rare for someone to have problems with them but i did and now it cost me 60 bucks to fix. just because you learn what you are doin and are comfortable with the various things you can do, sometimes things dont go right or there is spaz in the hardware and it will render you useless
Haha! This is a great post!

Ah, well if spend most all your time in One X/XL then I understand if you prefer to keep the writeup for this crowd. I did enjoy the read and am glad I stumbled across it.

I'm happy to share it; I was just concerned that having this as my first post over there might come across as somewhat obnoxious.
