Nice list. One thing that sometimes trips people up when installing Open Recovery using Dexter's apk: you must have the SD card mounted on the phone when you install Open Recovery (i.e. USB Charge Only mode). The easy way to make sure this is true is to unplug USB. Otherwise "install recovery" will report "success", but Open Recovery won't actually be installed.
TL;DR: unplug the phone before you press the "install recovery" button in step 3.

Hello All,
I'm knew to Android but since I got my XT720 I have been looking for ways to make it better since it doesn't have a lot of internal memory. I would also like to share how I installed it GalaxyXTv4.
I basically followed this Video
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943368
I download it the Galaxy from using this link
http://www.multiupload.com/VAIZTZJWMM
Finally I downloaded the whole root and openrecovery using this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946973
I also replace the content of the openrecovery folder with the extract of the GalxyXT, and the followed the Video.
The only difference is that I did reset everything cache, davlik, and factory defaults. When the phone rebooted, I was doing the initial setup and the phone rebooted itself twice, so I decided to remove the microSD card let the phone boot and then add the SD card back, I formated the card using the phone option and it has been working great (only a few hours since I installed the Galaxy).
The phone is performing better than when I was on 2.1 with apps2sd and definitely better than using 2.2.1 v4 BLUR make

I followed this guide and it worked, but when I powered off and powered on my phone just now.. it just stays at the white Motorola circle logo and then powers off. It's not bricked... is it?
Edit: Managed to get back into Openrecovery to wipe all 3 cache things. Now it's working okay.
After I format the SD card, I put to the phone, and it is not able to be read anymore. Please help
Re format it or buy a new card

I unrooted my phone click "unroot" using original OCLF thinking i didn't need this app anymore being i rooted the phone using usb and one click root when i flashed the cognition rom. Now i actually unrooted the phone and i uninstalled the original oclf and the new version does not let you root. How do i reroot my device? When i follow steps to reroot it has a red screen when im in reboot menu, i believe it is voodoo lag fix gives me many option but i use the power button to select reboot phone since i do not know what to do. Please help thanks!!
hmmm. You can search for root options on 2.2. You xan asks back everything up and reflash the rom.

how do i reflash if i cant even root my phone tho? when i try to use one click root, the phone goes into boot menu but all letters are red, and talks about voodoo lag fix, i will try again and post all the options that the phone gives
Disable lagfix, select install zip from sd in recovery. You do not need root to flash a rom as long as you have clockwork recovery. The red recovery will work

ok obviously i'm still kinda new to this, i somewhat understand what you mean, is there anyway you can give me better directions in steps? I know you are using your phone, thanks for the quick responses. how do you disable lag fix, and the rest of the steps?
Disable lagfix
Boot phone to on
Go to my files app
Look for voodoo folder
Inside voodoo folder create a new folder named disable-lagfix
Reboot, you will hear the voices.
flash rom
Make sure rom is on your sd
Long press power button
Select recovery
Once in recovery select install zip from sd
Then select choose zip or something like that
Find the cognition rom
Select
Select again
It is likely when the rom boots voodoo will still be disabled
To re enable go back to voodoo folder on sd, open, delete disable-lagfix folder, reboot. You will hear the voices

ok i used one click root to force root file that i renamed, it then rebooted phone to a red menu, "clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.3 - voodoo lagfix" options are:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
install zip from sd card
backup and restore
advanced
voodoo lagfix
go back...
Can i select install zip from sdcard from here, is that what you were meaning?
Also on a different note, i have the xda app how do you get notifications from my post?
The rom works fine, so do i need to flash it again, or is this the method i will need to flash all over again to be able to root?

I do not receive notifications, when I am bored and watching tv I am pretty much always playing around. If I am helping someone I am mindful to keep an eye out.

the root method i download was from a thread with video and instructions on how to flash a rom from 2.1 to a custom froyo rom. so if i get this right, your saying i need a file that roots a 2.2 phone? so i need to find in xda one click root for 2.2 right?
Well thanks for being bored and being helpful.
yes swype does put in the weirdest words sometimes
any idea on a 2.2 rooting file? or search?
my biggest bugs with swype are with the words "want" always come up with wasnt. and a few others but "want" bugs me the most
http://www.multiupload.com/02RXSWORVC
Try this. I found it in a search. It should be a download of an update zip to root froyo.save to sd, select apply update.zip in recovery. Make sure file is named update.zip
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
ok, just want to get this right, copy file to internal sd, rename "update.zip" then reboot phone to menu right? holding volume buttons and power right? then select reinstall packages? or will it prompt me to select update.zip from sd card

I have been trying to install the Bionix Frost SGS4G rom from team whiskey, but I am having a lot of trouble doing so. I downloaded the file posted in the original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119986), downloaded Rom Manager through my phone, then CWM through ROM Manager. I attempted to install the .zip file from the SD through ROM manager. Everytime I click the button to install from my SD card, I choose the folder and then my phone restarts and hangs on the "Galaxy S" startup screen. After about a minute, it starts up normally. I know I must be doing something wrong, so would it be possible for someone to walk me through installing this ROM (in somewhat detail)? Thank you in advanced!
I don't know specifically what's going on, but I just installed it on an otherwise stock+rooted T-Mobile SGS4G and it worked splendidly. Did you follow their steps exactly (emptying the cache and all that, and mounting /system)?
Thanks for the quick response. I never get the options to mount/clear because once I choose the .zip file, the phone restarts. I also have rooted, but otherwise stock. I haven't done much with it. Did you just put the zip file on your sd card and run from rom manager? Im not sure if there are any steps prior to this that I am missing. Thanks.

ok. i uninstalled ROM Manager. Then I went to the CWM Final Thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374) and downloaded the 2 files. I Used Root Explorer to overwrite my recovery file. Then I placed the update.zip file onto my SD Card. I just dragged and dropped into the SD card. It is not in a folder or anything and located in /sdcard on my phone. Then I redownloaded the Bionix Frost SGS4G rom and placed it in my /sdcard directory as well. I reboot my phone press the power button, along with both volume buttons to get into recovery. I get into the "Samsung Recovery Utils --for BML--, I see the options to reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache. But before I do this, I want to be sure I am on the right track. This is the recovery screen that everyone uses right? I do not see anywhere that it says ClockworkMod. If it is, I know I will have to choose "delete all user data", followed by "delete cache data". But after this step, how do I get to the options to "Mount storage and mount /system"? Thank you for all of the help
Click on reinstall packages ... that will load update.zip and that's how u get into cwm

I'm not sure if you got your problem fixed because I haven't read all the way thru this thread. But I had similar problems from what you described when I installed Bionix Black Ice with voodoo lag fix. I found that when I flashed the rom things didn't work right. My fix, after making a backup of everything, do a data/factory reset, then delete the cache, then delete delvik cache, then flash your new rom. After that, reinstall your apps thru the back up you created and all is good. I am using CWM to flash with and My backup root to backup my apps, files and what nots... Hope this helps!
sea, thats great advice. also, if you guys get any force closes, go back into cwm and go to advanced and fix permissions.

How to get Android 2.3 Operating System(OS) on your Huawei Ascend (For Newbies)
Android 2.3
Z4Root
Google Apps
Metro Backup
Ok, to start things off, You need to move all of the files that you downloaded to your phone’s SD Card, you will also need a Application Installer, You can download one from the android marketplace for free, there’s tons of them. “AppInstaller” is the one that I personally use.
1)First you must root the phone by installing the Z4Root file. Open your application installer and find Z4Root where ever you placed it onto your SD Card, install the Z4Root. The phone will restart on its own. The phone is now rooted.
2)Next you need to download clockwork recovery from the android marketplace. There is a Free version and a Paid version. The free version works just fine . After downloading the app, open it and under the 2nd tab of the app choose the reboot into recovery option.
3)The phone will restart itself and a black screen with blue/green text will appear, it is recommended to create a backup before installing anything new. Next, Choose the “wipe data/factory reset” option and click yes. Then choose the “wipe cache partition” option and click yes again. Lastly, click the “advanced” option then scroll down to “wipe Dalvik Cache” and choose yes again.
4)Once you have wiped the three files, choose the “Install From Zip” option, then the “choose Zip from SD Card” option. (You should have the Android 2.3, gapps and Metro backup Files on your zip already, If not, put the two files onto your SD card then repeat the last step). Then scroll down to the “Cm7-Ascend-05142011” option, the new operating system will now be installed onto your phone.
5)After that, choose the “MetrOFF.v1.1-MMS-[GB]-[CM_AOSP]” option. This fixes a bug that caused users to not send multimedia messages properly.
6)Now choose the “gapps-gb-20110307-signed-1.zip”, this installs all of the google apps onto your phone
6)After installing the Gapps file, choose the “reboot system now” option. Your phone now has Android 2.3 Operating system!
7) Yay!

Superuser keeps track of and grants permissions to apps to root access. When you use Z4Root or Gingerbreak, it is installed automatically. And yes, you need it.

The only problems are that with Metro you need the metroff fix flashed, and you can't use the camera with apps. For instance, you can't use a barcode or QR code scanner. If you need a QR scanner, you have to take a pic of the QR code first with just your camera, then open something like QR Droid, and read the code from the pic you took.

PlayfulGod has really maximized what the Ascend is capable of. I haven't heard anyone saying that his CM7 ROMs aren't faster and better. His latest overclock to 710 and 748, depending on if you have a lazy Ascend or not, and have a2sd integrated into the ROM. It's faster, beefier, and just plain better. IMO anyway.

Update this method by using the latest CM7 and gapps 20110613 found in Prepaid Android Wiki. Just know that if you try to flash the ROM with the 748 OC kernel, and your phone won't boot after a couple attempts, you probably have a lazy Ascend and need to flash the ROM with the 710 OC kernel.
If you're on 2.2, it will still work, except root with Gingerbreak instead of Z4Root.

To install CWM:
First, make sure Unknown Sources and USB Debugging are both checked.
Make sure you have the Ascend drivers installed.
Then, if you haven't rooted your phone, do a permanent root with Z4Root. If you're going to flash CM7 (Android 2.3.4) grab the CM7 and gapps zip files from Prepaid Android Wiki and put them on your sdcard now.
Plug your phone into your computer via USB.
Then grab Clockwork Mod 3.0.2.8, unzip it, open the folder, and run these files (make sure you use the versions for the OS your computer is running, Windows for instance)
adb
fastboot
install recovery
Unplug the phone, pull the battery for several seconds, put it back in.
Hold volume up and send button (leftmost button along bottom) and hit the power button. Don't let go of the buttons until you see recovery.
To flash CM7:
Make sure to BACKUP APPS AND CONTACTS!
Grab the latest version from Prepaid Wiki along with the gapps zip there
Copy both zips to your sdcard (don't unzip them!)
Boot into Clockwork Mod
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
go into advanced
Wipe dalvik cache
back out to main menu
go into mounts and storage
Format boot
Format system
Format data
Format cache
back out to main menu
Install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
select CM7 zip
select gapps zip
back out to main menu
Advanced
Fix permissions
back out to main menu
Reboot system now.
Wait for a little bit. If it gets stuck at the boot screen for more than ten minutes, and you tried the 748 OC kernel, try it all over again with the 710 OC kernel.

I'm hoping I'm just missing something. I tried these steps earlier but no matter which CM7 ZIP I tried, i get stuck at the "Ascend" screen during boot. I have CWM 3.0.2.8, tried the following MODs:
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09122011) (748 OverClock defaulted to 710)
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09132011) (710 OverClock defaulted to 710)
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09132011) (710 OverClock defaulted to 600)
Always seem to get stuck on the Ascend screen. I'm rooted. Originally had 2.2, rooted via Gingerbreak and when I couldn't get it going, I tried going to Metro PCS stock 2.1, used Z4 to root, then tried the exact steps above, even the extra formats and the permissions fix at the end. Waited 15 mins during each boot and it's stuck on the Ascend screen (before the CM7 boot screen).
Any ideas?
Odd that you keep getting stuck at boot, maybe you have a super-lazy Ascend that doesn't like the kernels. When it's stuck at the screen like that, I could sneak into a too-high-for-my-phone kernel by tapping or holding rhe power button when it seemed stuck.
Personally, I would run this by the guys at androidforums.com. They're still fresh in this phone, and it's probably something obvious that I'm not seeing.

Another thought. When I was flashing my Ascend all the time, there were lots of times I had to reflash with fresh downloads multiple times. I remember at least twice I it took 4 flashes to take. Granted, those were early versions of CM7, but I never called it unsuccessful until I tried to flash a ROM 3 or 4 times.

Thanks Scur. I posted on AndroidForums.com. I tried Bobz's last build and that loaded. Maybe it's just PlayfulGod's mods. I'll do it a few more times and see, but at least I know I have one build that works. Thanks again!
Yeah, so I did litterally EVERYTHING this wanted me to do, and in the end I got black screen with blue letters. I only had 4 options:
Reboot now
Upgrade SD
Wipe factory
Wipe cache
Someone please help? I have the CM7 downloaded into my SD card i think, just someone please try to help.

That's the factory stock recovery. You didn't install ClockworkMod recovery.
Cud anybody help me with the istallation procedure for the following link..

Really confused here and wanna install ICS 4.0.4 for my phone :/
0. Make sure you're rooted
1. I think you also need s-off
1.5. Download the ROM file, and the Gapps file
2. Flash a custom recovery, such as ClockWorkMod. The easiest way is to download ROM Manager
3. Boot into that recovery. This can be done by using ROM Manager, or some device specific method (search it)
4. Make a backup (use the volume keys to navigate, select and back buttons are different for each phone, but should be easy to figure out)
5. Clear data/factory reset. OPTIONAL: under advanced clear dalvik cache
6. Install zip from SD card, navigate to the downloaded ROM, and select
7. Let it install, then install zip from SD card again, but this time select the google apps file
8. Reboot and enjoy! First bootup will always take longer than normal.
NOTE: since you do a factory reset, its a good idea to backup your apps with titanium backup, and various other things (like sms and mms) with mybackup root
This is the procedure for flashing any non-Sense (lol) ROM as well
Hope this helps!

I really doubt the Wildfire S to be powerful enough to manage running ICS smoothly.
Anyway, good luck!
Rooting the phone is such a pain in the ass wid the bootloader requiring as many as 14-15 software's installed b4 it can work properly and also crashes everytime!!

hi , being the total rom noob i have some questions
I finally found a ROM for my device , here in the forums.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2117085
Problem is I never succesfully applied a custom rom before.
I found this general guide for flashing custom ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1941028
It's helpfull ,but i don't quite get there.
1) first step of the topic says i need to download files from sammobile and flash em over my phone . I had a look and i think this step is required for the 'clean' install to start from?
2) replace the 3e_recovery file with the existing in System/Bin (download root browser lite from google play store). --> i don't quite get what i need to do here
3) install Rom-manager and install clockworkmod (choose samsung captivate).i find an app called clockworkmod , and find another one which needs to be installed once i start clockworkmod. I succeceed in downloading and selecting the captivate. When i click the 'flash recovery' button i get some error
4) if i reboot in recovery window and try to apply the updates it errors , but this is probably due to 5 mistakes i already did before.
Sorry for this noob question. If my phone would be a popular one i probably would get there with the default guides on youtube and stuff , but right now i don't quite figure it out
Thanks in advance to anyone trying to help me.
Yoshiwa
