G2X owners - READ THIS! - T-Mobile LG G2x

G2X owners...
Do NOT flash a Optimus 2X baseband onto your G2X. It will remove all phone functionality (I am working on obtaining a P999 baseband so you can revert if you've done this).
Do NOT use my recovery installer or recovery reboot app at this time - recovery is on a different partition in the G2X. I will update the installed and app to add G2X compatability soon.
Could a mod sticky this as it's VERY important information?

Could we install your recovery with ADB in the different partition manually?

Thanks a ton Paul I was hoping but not expecting you to come to the G2x owners rescue. I'll be keeping an eye on this because I dumped my nexus s for the g2x!!!

Thanks for the important scoop Paul!

Very excited to hear that we have one of the top devs supporting the G2X. Ordered mine early this AM. Waiting for the truck to arrive, just another what, 6 days, don't know how I will be able to maintain sanity.

Gotta love craigslist I have mine in hand, comparing it to the Nexus S. Summary: there is no comparison, it blows it away. It even blows away the samoled screen (except of course those incredible blacks). I prefer the Nexus S form factor, but I'll get over it. /end off topic post

Thanks for the heads up. Just got my G2X and want to play around with it but now the waiting game.

Confused.. I don't know if mines a g2x or an optimus 2x ?

Does it look like stock Android, or does it have the LG skin? Stock Android is the G2X (only available from T-Mobile USA, afaik), while the LG-skinned one is the Optimus 2X

Well.. it came with a load of Lg bloat then quickly got rooted lol

So basically - we can root the phone using the info from the 2X but no custom ROMs until this issue gets fixed?
As long as I can root it the second I get it and remove all the T-Mo bloat (except for Wifi Calling, I happen to love that feature), I can be patient before flashing custom ROMs and kernels and such. Apparently the G2x, being stock Android, performs pretty damn well out of the box anyway.

What about using Rom Manager to flash clockwork mod recovery? I have a paid version of Rom Manager and it is even better with the latest and greatest update. Can we use clockwork mod recovery with rom manager??? It's probably a dumb ass question but I saw on the LG section of XDA that CWM recovery was some how not usable on the G2X. Thanks for any help.
Just waiting for the delivery truck.

I hope this is true as well. I can live without custom roms for a little while (I think), but would like to take advantage of root.

The LF updater will only fail you if you can't read. Instructions are clear. Took me all of 30 minutes to update from LG, revert back to froyo [I only wanted the baseband from the update], root and apply a custom GB rom.
I'm pretty sure theres a thread on how to update it with the kdz file.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Use the LG updater. It's the same build and it's really easy. It's not like it's unofficial or anything. It comes from LG's website.

just flash cyanogenmod and be done with it. its a much much better user experience. i even have iphone owners going wow that phone is nice when it comes to responsiveness. i dare anyone to get a iphone owner to say that with stock.

I would do that, as soon as I get the updated baseband from the official update, which seems to fix the gps issues I'm having for some people.

G2X CM7
I just flashed cm7, but I'm back to stock again waiting for the ota. It's incredibly stable compared to some of the nightlies I tried out a month or two ago, but I still have no gps lock. Pretty darn sure at this point its the baseband.
On a side note, has a2dp been fixed on cm? I forgot to check.

Doesn't have to pretend to be GB in build.prop.
Niceee. When you say working camera is that to say the camera in the dev section isnt 'working'? I've tried it out and it works great!

Is there an updated "how to install CM7"? I've searched around and keep finding bits and pieces of what I want, but not the whole picture.
I'm on a stock rooted g2x but want to make sure I do this right. I've flashed CWM recovery with NVFlash. Do I need to update with LG tool to get the latest baseband, or do I just flash CM7?

If you want the latest baseband, you have to go through LG's flasher or the OTA update. However, this is not required for CM7. CM7 is happy with either baseband version.

I haven't noticed any improvement from old baseband to new, so just flash CM7 and don't worry about the LG updater tool.
1. Nandroid backup using cwm
2. wipe using cwm
3. flash cm7 (just get the latest nightly: http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=p999)
When you flash subsequent nightlies/RCs of CM7, you can flash right over the previous CM7 flash, just be sure to wipe cache/dalvik cache and do a repair permissions before booting into new CM7 flash. At least that's my little ritual, not sure how much it helps.

new lg mytouch 4g root?

I know this isn't the lg mytouch thread, but there isn't one. I ordered 2 of these phones as a test order I couldn't cancel, but was pleasantly surprised at the solidness of the device. Very thin and light, and solid enough build quality. Screen is AMOLED sharp.
I need to use the hotspot therefore I need root. But it doesn't look like people even acknowledge the phone's existence.
any Ideas?
Which OS version is it running, to begin with?
If the bootloader isn't locked - you have a shot by using one of the temp-root methods and pushing Superuser.apk+su.
If the bootloader is preventing write access to /system partition - you'll need to wait until someone creates a method to unprotect the /system. And it might take a lot of time...

I am kinda new to this but would this work on totally different phone I mean yes the original HTC Glacier AKA MyTouch 4G and HTC Vision AKA G2 were kinda the same both made by HTC but these phones the LG MyTouch and LG MyTouch Q are totally different and besides the LG MyTouch do not have a 2.2.1 rom out there, also I do read this thread so I do thank you for the help earlier but I just want to clarify if it will work on ANY 2.3.4 rom thanks again
It can't be said for sure - since nobody tried it yet. But it works on other chipsets - fr3vo was originally made for Evo 3D and Sensation. So, since no harm can be done by trying it (the worst you can get is having to reboot the phone), why not to try?

Lol. You posted these same questions on Android Central. At least that was in the right forum.
Without a custom kernel there aren't a lot of options with setcpu to save battery. What are your available governors?
One thing you might do to save battery while the phone is asleep is make a sleep profile that locks the max somewhere between 300 and 400 mhz (if possible).

[Q] installing Froyo camera on G2X running Gingerbread

First, before shaming me over a question that surely has been answered somewhere (yeah, I saw the scary intro video ), let me just say that:
I read the camera thread (no, not all 100+ pages) but couldn't find the answer.
I tried to post on that thread but wasn't allowed because of my noob status.
I'm an Android developer, so you don't have to hold my hand.
I'll gladly read the instructions, if only I can find them.
So... I have a G2X that I've upgraded to Android 2.3.3 using LG's tool. Like everyone in the world, I hate the new Gingerbread camera. Well, not so much hate---it's just that the photos and videos are unusable.
So I found on the camera thread that some wonderful person(s) have made available the camera from the Froyo version. I downloaded the LGCam V3.0.zip file and unzipped it. But I'd like to know:
Do I just install the apk like any other android app?
What do I do with the library and XML files? Do I just throw them in some special Android directory? Or do I leave them in the same directory as the apk? Or do I put them elsewhere?
Once I install this apk, can I uninstall it and go back to the camera I have now?
What are all those other files (e.g. Stock_Gingerbread_Camera.zip) on that thread? Are they merely earlier versions, or are they alternate camera builds from other developers?
I'm sorry I couldn't find this information. But I couldn't. If you'd point me to this information, I'd appreciate it---and if I succeed I'll even write a blog entry about it to make this easier for others. Thank you!!
You don't have to unzip it, just flash the .zip it through recovery. You can leave the .zip on the root of your SD and just.flash it through there. The Stock Gingerbread Camera .zip is the camera you have now, so you can revert. Also, you might want to try Jboxer's 2.3.4 ROM, it has the LG Camera pre-installed.

You can root your phone and still keep your apps. If you follow this guide, and then flash WeaponG2x, you'll be fine since Weapon G2x is based on the same 2.3.3 firmware. At that point, you should be able to flash the LG Camera in recovery by holding power+volume down.
You can flash Weapon without factory reset since it's based on 2.3.3? File this under "things I wish I knew last night"

Oh, that would be awesome. So these xda-developers.com threads... you know, I'm used to someone creating and updating single page. (Sorry for whining.) Can I just read the first page of these posts you mentioned and follow the directions? Or do I have to read all 50+ and 100+ pages, respectively, and note all the small details in some obscure reply that might modify the instructions, or indicate something has been updated, etc., and note that e.g. page 83 changed the instructions mentioned in page 40, which changed the instructions on page 1, except that page 90 told how the instructions on page 40 were wrong...? How does this work?
I'm pretty new here but they seem to update the versions with instructions in the first post. If you want commentary on a version you will probably have to look for posts in the time frame it was released.
got WeaponG2x---next steps?
OK, I'm almost there, but...
I installed ClockworkMod. Am I rooted now? (I downloaded Titanium Backup but couldn't find out how to start it---the "refund" button was all that was available, so I requested a refund.)
If I flash the LG Camera using the power+volume down combination, why did I need WeaponG2x? Couldn't I have just flash the new camera using ClockworkMod?
Now that I have ClockworkMod installed, will this make my phone less secure? Before, you had to enter a password to get into my phone. Now if someone steals my phone, can't they just boot into ClockworkMod without a password?
Most important of all, the camera: the Weapon G2x 3.0_R1 page says "LG Cam v3.0". So did I get the LG Cam v3.0 just by installing WeaponG2x? Or do I still have to flash it? (See point #2 above.)
Thanks for all the help so far.
P.S With WeaponG2x, I hope I don't have to reboot my phone at security in the airport---the last thing I need is a huge "weapon" sign...)
You don't have root yet, but since Weapon is a rooted ROM, you'll have root access for Titanium Backup and other things. You don't have to flash Weapon, but it's extra features are great. If you don't want the extra features, look up Xboarder's tweaked 2.3.3 ROM. LG Camera 3.0 works with Weapon and Xboarder's.
Also, the last part was funny
Sent from my Tsugi G2x using XDA Premium
And concerning ClockworkMod and security, there's no option for passwords, unfortunately. But you still need a password to use the actual Android OS itself.
Sent from my Tsugi G2x using XDA Premium
success!
After flashing WeaponG2x, I realized others had the same question of "where is the Gingerbread camera when it is listed in the WeaponG2x features?" Turns out it was removed in a later build and you have to install it yourself---in fact a link is listed on the main page.
So I installed the LG Cam V3.0 for WeaponG2x, and it works! My phone still seems to function, I didn't have to reinstall my apps, and I still get the T-Mobile WiFi calling! Whew! Half the morning just to get a new camera, but... it was worth it!
I really appreciate everyone who helped me on this thread. None of this is particularly difficult, but if one isn't involved in the rooting/ROM community, it's not entirely obvious where to start... or even what you need. Turns out I didn't even need WeaponG2x, it seems, but... I guess I'm better off, now... Thanks!

I was under the impression that I needed WeaponG2x---now that I know, I probably wouldn't have bothered my stock ROM and just used ClockworkMod to get the new camera. But now that I have WeaponG2x, can you help my buyer's remorse---what is the Xboarder, and the WeaponG2x ROM is better, right? Right? I'd hate to have to flash another ROM just because I think I flashed an inferior one. What's the best ROM I can get for G2X 2.3.3 without resetting and reinstalling everything? Cheers!

Cheers!

Weapon is superior because it has more features, but some people like pure stock like Xboarder's ROM, so Weapon was a good choice.
Good to know everything worked out okay

Yeah, but no joke---now every time I whip out my phone on a long flight and turn it on to listen to music (in airplane mode, of course), I'm going to have to hide it into my pocket until it boots up. Otherwise, can you imagine the commotion when the person next to me sees this huge, bright "WEAPON!!!" sign? Arg!
FYI, the LG camera that you can flash to gingerbread works great *except* that it is not Skype video chat compatible. If this has changed, someone let me know. Since I use Skype video chat with the front facing camera for work (and to see my little girl when I am away) this was a deal breaker for me. I was using Xboarder's ROM with the stock camera.
Tsugi G2x has a flashable LG camera that does work with Skype video chat. I think JBoxer's ROM may as well.

[Q] No one's playing with the LG LS840 'Viper'?

Ok, so having transferred back to Sprint after an arduous ordeal with Verizon, I now have my new LG LS840 'Viper'[A.os v2.3.3] and have rooted the system. This was definitely not my preferred choice (I wanted the HTC Evo LTE), but it seems like you all got to them first. Now having said this, I find it alarming how few (if I manage to find any @ all) posts there are about the above mentioned LG.
I have run into a few problems. As in things like; I have root and su# capability. System apps. which require root seem to work fine(i.e. mem. optimizers and CPU controls etc.). That is until I try Clockwork Recovery which sends the device into reboot. Also, trying to access the bootloader in the common android fashion (Pwr+Vol.Dn) does nothing more than send me to a 'Factory Data Reset' option.
Now please understand that I am new to LG, as all my experience is with HTC, both at Sprint prev.(HTC EVO 4G wi-max) and at Verizon (HTC Thunderbolt LTE) I think I simply got conned into this fone.
So, If any one reading this post has any experience with the LG Viper, or any other LG device, or both (preferably), Please, give me the run down on how these devices work or any input on the above listed issues.
Also, any links to information (etc.) will be highly appreciated.
Thank You, JLM
p.s.
I should also probably mention that I rooted the device using the SuperOneClick method listed @ Androidcentral.com
I have LG P509 Optimus T to access recovery home, volume up and power. I'm using AmonRa 3.0.6 but same button combination for Clockworkmod recovery.

Have you installed a cutom recovery yet? You will need it to flash rom's and make backups.

Not yet. I thought that S1C would load it. I have currently found a user program that is supposed to work with LG viper. I have yet to try and run it. Here is the url address http://d-h.st/GFZ. with a little more time maybe I can have it worked out.

Perhaps I should mention that the SuperOneClick version I used successfully was v.1.7 and not the v.2.3.3 that is listed in the Androidcentral Forum. With v.2.3.3 it always froze trying to load Superuser.apk
I jut got one of these todays. Cannot figure out how to get to the boot-loader yet.

LG
LG is a good brand was thinknig of getting it
I've had this phone for about 6-8 weeks now and still cannot find any roms to flash.
Jelly Bean release
I get the feeling the Viper is suffering because of LG's decision to release it with GB when ICS had been available for so long. Maybe there's some light at the end of the tunnel. I did find at least one rumor saying it will get a Jelly Bean Update in the Sept/Oct time frame. It might be enough to get some interest back into the device. Without some interest on the part of Devs, this isn't going to move much at all. It might already be past a critical adoption time too.
Since I'm a noob, I can't post a link, but go ahead and Google:
List of AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile Phones that will get Jelly Bean
Its actually a pretty slick little device for the price. Can't beat free

I'm quite disappointed with this phone and the lack of development. It's been a great phone despite the fact that something fried inside my first one, and now my 2nd may be suffering from the same thing. I might keep this phone as a spare and upgrade to something better soon.
I'll have to agree with earlier, this little thing (my main is a SII Epic 4g Touch) is not bad. My girl had got one, said she was having problems so I switched, giving her my Photon 4g, but since I've had it, and rooted it, I haven't had a lick of problem out of it. One thing that has surprised me is also the what has seemed an extreme lack of support on it (I've had a custom rom on every one of my phones since my first cappy 3 years ago). Another is the external speaker....my goodness!! this thing is twice as loud as my SII....of course LG has been slowing falling off the bandwagon, but somehow holding on in the android race. And tho I'm a Galaxy S freak, this phone is alright. For free, a hell of a deal.

from what ive found on the internet the only way to have custom roms on the lg viper is to flash back to GB with the lg flashtool and then flash a rom. I think the bootloader is locked and that's why you cant do anything with it. I haven't tried to unlock with any programs or anything cause I don't think im that advanced but if you want to try go ahead. this is all just info ive gathered from the internet though. I have managed to root ics zvk though. just don't freeze or uninstall google play movies and tv. it gives a security error.
if you want to root zvk follow these steps though;
1) install lg flashtool and flash phone to zvi
2) root with Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15
3) install ota root keeper(voodoo ota rootkeeper)
4)temp unroot in ota rootkeeper
5)install update to zvk
6)restore root in ota rootkeeper
7)enjoy!!!
It's late, but I'm playing with it. I'm using a thread to summarize what I find.
