Are Inspire owners really that weak and girly? - HTC Inspire 4G

I have found no issue with removing the battery cover or sim cover. Just sayin. Its a little exaggerated.

I've had no issues either. I can see the possibility of these covers breaking. (The tabs I mean) ...But one would have to be careless with the removal and install. I've only had to pull my battery once, and no issues at all with the cover.

Maybe they're worried about accidentally cracking their screen by pushing too hard in the wrong spot.

Well, the first one or two times is no picnic...it definitely feels like your applying enough pressure that, if inadvertently displaced to a more delicate part of the phone, could damage it.
After a few times of doing it successfully, however, the cover starts to loosen up a little, making it easier to do as time goes on.
Not to mention, its all in the technique. NOT using that little "fingernail slot" that's on the cover (it's too shallow and positioned off-center to provide adequate grip), but instead sliding your fingernail in between the volume button rocker and the cover, gives you a better shot at success.

If you got yours recently, or within the past few weeks like I did - HTC addressed and fixed the battery cover issue.
How do I know this? On the first inspire I had that I got on the launch day, the battery cover was already on the phone, which meant we had to struggle to break it off with a small screwdriver in the store. I never took it off again after that, but the initial removal was a B----.
The second one I got a few weeks ago had the battery cover in its own little plastic bag, in the box - OFF of the phone. All you had to do was pop in the battery and then press on the cover in the store.
Since then I had to do a few battery pulls when I made the mistake of not wiping the dalvik cache for some roms (I do it all the time now). The first time I removed the cover for this phone was MUCH easier than the first time I removed it on my first inspire.
Long story short, HTC fixed the struggle, and you probably have a post-fix device. It's a good thing - I'm not trying to put a damper on your manliness.

I purchased mines on launch. The initial battery pull was a PITA. After that it's really easy.

Yeah, I was relieved when I saw it was in the box and not on the phone. The first one I mangled pretty good in the Radioshack where I bought it at, which really sucks. I'm really glad they fixed it - and it is still plenty snug enough to not worry about it ever popping open.

Its really easy to do. I can dissemble the phone without problems. Dunno why people are moaning, it's quite easy and snaps into place without problems.
What pisses me off is the way its designed, I want one of those big 3000mA extended batteries, AINT GONNA HAPPEN THANKS TO HTC'S RETARDED DESIGN.

Yeah. I've never had any issues with it. It's waayy overblown.
Via the XDA app for the HTC Inspire

If you just put your fingernail right where the little clips are(you can see them when the cover is off) its very easy and doesnt usually offer much resistance or feel like its going to break.

I find it much easier to remove the battery on this phone then the glorious iPhones!

I have 2 batterys since the battery life sucks and I just switch them usually once every two days and have been doing so for the past 2 months and my battery door is still fine. It gets so much easier after a couple of times.

Yeah right when I got the phone I had absolutely no problem removing either cover.

It was a bit tedious at first taking the battery cover off, but after one time, you get the hang of it, and it's not terrible. I'd much rather have it a bit harder to open than exceedingly easy just for peace of mind I suppose.
The SD card cover is a breeze though.

Otterbox Commuter - phone got run over by a car and survived!

So, long story short...
I was stupid enough to drive off from a parking lot with my phone on top of the roof of the car.
Returned some time later to circle the parking lot, looking for it with no luck. Figured it must have held on through some turns due to the rubber corners, so I left the lot and retraced my route, leading back to a main street. Crawling at 10 mph at 2 o'clock in the morning, I held on to the hope that I would spot it.
Seeing a black object on the side of the road, I pulled over thinking I'd finally found it... only to discover it was someone else's expensive smartphone! As you can see from the pictures below, I think it's a Motorola Droid X with the screen smashed to bits.

Disheartened, but still not giving up, I kept driving. A couple of blocks down, I saw another black object and stopped in the middle of the road. It was the Otterbox's soft inner case... a few feet away from it I found the naked Inspire, and its battery. As you can imagine, I was already quite happy at this point.. but I couldn't see if the phone worked or not without the battery cover. So I made a u-turn, circled around twice, and found my battery cover as well as the Otterbox's outer shell, which was squished on the sides, with some of them flattened.. obviously run over by a car.
Back in the car, I inspected my phone (no scratches on the screen, some scrapes at the corners and around the lens, but all cosmetic), popped the battery in, and it didn't boot. I realized that I'd put the battery in the wrong way, and tried again. White screen, HTC logo, and CM7 boot! My phone had just survived falling from the roof of my car and being run over by another one.
Moral of the story is.. HTC build quality rocks and the Commuter is an awesome case! If it could do this for my phone, the Defender would pretty much render it indestructible.
PS I salvaged the 16gb microsd card from the Motorola and upgraded my 8gb one! Lmao.

Damage Report:
As you can see, the scratched areas are the corners and the lens (only the rim, not the glass!).. which are the only areas the Commuter's hard shell doesn't fully cover.
It seems as if the phone had shed the silicone skin before the corner damage occurred, as the skin seems to be unharmed.. that might have prevented some or most of them.
Not bad! Thanks for sharing because I have been considering that case.
Glad to have gotten the same case and I really do like the case personally the first time I put it on. Thanks for sharing your story mate.

Just got my phone this past Friday and I'm looking into getting accessories for it. Thank you for this post as it helped me decide which case to get now.
It'll be nice if Otter actually have some in stock for people that are looking to buy it.
I think they get new stock every few days. I tried to order a new one the night of the incident with no luck. The next afternoon, they were back in stock and I got my order in.
Sent from a telegraph station somewhere in northern Russia.
Sorry to hear about your accident Pheno.menon but look at the brightside, you have your phone intact with little to no damage.
Wow, good to see the case I bought a week prior to buying my Inspire does its job.
Bite the bullet and buy the Otterbox Commuter everyone, looking at mine now and am more than satisfied by the protection as well & the styling it gives the already beautiful phone.
I'm always in an attempt to keep it that way.
Specs of the case:
I know this is not the streak thread but hey i read them all! I must say the commuter is for real i dropped my streak from over six feet it bounced a couple times then slid on the concrete all i could think was well there went that phone i was sick because some peoples have been broken from way less. Anyway to get to the point no damage at all otterbox commuter a+++++++++++ a must have.

This thing turns a thin sexi phone into a BEAST. I guess it's all about how you treat your phone... if you're one to drop the phone, yeah, you need this, and it's worth having it turned into a thick beast of a phone for the protection, but if you're careful and not 12 years old, a standard case or no case is just fine.
It never ceases to amaze me that people buy slim\sleek phones, then put a big ol case on it... total waste. If it breaks it breaks. If you're that prone to destroying phones, get insurance. Not worth ruining the aesthetics of the phone.
I'm also baffled as to what would cause a car to run over a phone. I guess the same pool of people as end up on Judge Judy and Jerry Springer.
I think this thread just helped me make my decision on cases!

Has anyone tried both the Mugen and Seidio extended battery covers?

I'm curious which one felt better in your hands while typing with the hardware keyboard. If Mugen does I will order the Seidio battery and Mugen cover independently as I've had good experiences with this combo of parts on my Palm Previously.
Dude man like really. Why wasting my time wit you. Everyone knows seidio rules. Just look at their website they have everything then look at mugenpower and like they don't have all the accessories, they are the low down dirty skanks of the cell world
Also with mugenpower better get a condom for your phone as they are made in dirty conditions with slave labor from china

I just got my Seidio 3300 and must say the case for it is extremely uncomfortable in my hands. There are way too many hard angles which is really taking away from the the experience of using the phone itself. I ordered the Mugen cover from the link posted below and will be updating this post in a few days when I receive it.

Yeah, especially with the keyboard fix TheImpaler posted last night. Although I have become accustomed to the Epic's weight I have always found it to be a little light for my taste. Even after logging some decent time in with this Seidio cover I still don't like it. There is just way too much going on in the back not to be distracted by it. Having extra meat in the back also makes typing 5x easier. I'm thinking a thicker OE design will be just what the doctor ordered. Mugen did a good job on their covers for the Pre and hopefully they'll do justice to the Epic's design as well.
I don't really use the slide keyboard. I just like the idea of the same/similar curvature as stock.
I just got the Mugen cover and its spectacular. I had to shave the living hell out of the insides to get it to fit as it uses a thicker plastic than the Seidio but it was well worth the effort. I highly recommend it. Feels great in my hands.
Nice. Can you post a picture of the insides?
Lots of scraping with a pocket knife lol. I lined the edges of the battery with some chalk to see what areas needed shaving.

Cool. Thanks for that. How does it fit around the edges? Is it precise?
I'm OCD and my generic eBay cover bugs the heck out of me because it doesn't follow the phone perfectly. Hah
It took about three days to come from Colorado to Berkeley. No shipping confirmation was sent so don't get worried if you don't hear anything from Mugen.

It fits great. I'm OC too and spent an extra 20 minutes shaving it down so that everything was nice and tight. I took off maybe 1/16" off when all was said and done. I'll post pics of it once I get home.
Thanks. I placed my order the other day. Do you still like it?
It was a little too much for me to be carrying around as a daily driver. I didn't mind it with my Pre but the Epic was just too big for my preference. I'm keeping it around for roadtrips however incase I need some intensive GPS usage. I ended up going back to the stock battery and lucked out when my phone bricked on Vision's 1.2 kernel. The sales rep at Sprint was nice and slipped me a spare battery. The girth of the extended battery cover definitely made typing a little easier so I ordered a protective case off ebay. Some guy is selling the same (supposedly) cases that Sprint sells for dirt cheap. They're the ones made by Otterbox. I picked it up for $7 shipped.
So for you it's a size issue, not fit or finish?
Yeah, fit and finish are perfectly fine. Expect to be shaving for a loong time. I think a pocketknife will work best.
I just received mine about an hour ago. Interestingly, the fit & finish is fine as you said but I had to put a spacer inside...not dig it out. I cut a business card in quarters, folded one of them in half then taped it inside.
I don't know if that's because of my batteries being eBay cheapies, or variance in the cover.
My only real complaint is how tight it is once it's on. Those little tabs make removal extremely difficult. Folks who never or rarely change batteries might consider that a good thing.

i'm switching out my shattered Captivate under insurance for an Inspire as of now (get my inspire tomorrow and could not be more excited haha)
but anyway, this led me to look up a little about the prices/difficulty of screen replacement on the inspire vs captivate. Captivate was possible to replace, but being an OLED screen, it was very expensive (something like 130 bucks or so). Inspire replacement screen is only 60 bucks, but wow, i looked at the teardown video and it is downright INSANE. HTC made it as close to impossible to replace a screen as they could.

While having an easily replaceable screen may seem like a huge consumer benefit, I highly doubt the percentage of people that are actually willing and capable to perform a screen replacement are taken into account. I'm sure it is low on the manufacturers list as far as design criteria.

very true....but you also think they would do it to benefit themselves. Think about it, what do you think is the number one service request they get? yeah but their technicians know how to do it and probably do it frequently. They can probably do it a hell of a lot faster than you can because they do it all the time. Now if you do it, you're probably going to have to make sure you're doing every step correctly to make sure you're doing it correctly.
Also, that sucks...I had a gel case on mine, and it was kind of thin, and I was playing doodle jump while I was walking (stupid) and my friend slammed the door on me (as a joke) and I dropped my phone flat on its back, and since the camera sticks out a bit, the round part around the camera got scratched (not the lens, thankfully)
I might replace it eventually because I saw that you can buy the back part for like $35...so if the back gets any more beat up, I'll replace it. I like my phone looking awesome

right....
what I'm saying is that since they do it more often, they understand what they need to do and probably don't have trouble with it. It's their specialty, so once they learn how to do it, it's probably quick and easy for them. Making it easier for the consumer probably won't make much of a difference for the technicians.
i know what you meant....it just didn't really apply to what i'm talking about at all. Just because they know how to do it, doesn't make it any easier. It is still a long and very tedious process no matter who you are.
Take an iphone 3g for example. 2 phillips screws and a spudger to remove 3 ribbon cables and you are done. Which do you think a technician would rather do??? Something very long and drawn out, sometimes involving a heat gun to loosen the adhesive holding the screen in the chassis (hence, the EVO) or a couple screws and total time taking less than 5 minutes (even for someone like myself).

I´ve simply bought a 4*8 Inches sized Fibre tape.
Then i attached it on my backcover, heated the tape with a hair dryer and pulled it around the corners. When a part of the Cover was without folds, I let it cool down so that the tape cured and then cut a part of the fibre tape off.
Then I heated the cover again and the procedure started once more.
It took me for about 45 minutes and a very steady hand, even though a friend supported me.
That's awesome! Where did you buy the tape? I'm hoping that it was online...

Exactly the same here... My edges just didn't get perfect because i was afraid to break them... I was usign the hair drier and it looked like the back cover was going way too wobbly (i don't know the word opposit to "hard"). Mainly because the original gets very hot, and the phone once came up with a warning on mine about not charging the phone while using it so much, I think I was using it to watch a full HD video or something, that I had not bothered to convert to something more fitting to the SGS. But it is nice to use it as a portable media centre.
What a great idea!! Here's me probably bought about 6 different battery covers and cases and always got rid of them because they never fit properly, or if I find one i DO like then they get cracks or the paint wears off.
And this is using the original! Brilliant idea.
Does the tape make the sides of the cover wider than the phone? You know how some cheap badly fitting battery covers seems to stick out at the sides where they should join seamlessly?
Of course it´s a bit thicker, but it fits pretty well Much better than those rubbish Back-covers from Ebay
And to clarify it: There is no problem with overheating at my phone at all....
Battery temps are the same as without the tape so i guess CPU and everything else will be the same too
Anyway temperatures highly depend on the modem-file you use...
I've got (yet another) back cover on the way from eBay, but I think this one may fit just right after talking to the seller... but this carbon tape idea i love! I was thinking about sanding down my stock Samsung back because i love the fit and everything, its' just too damn slippery.... and paint would scratch off over time. but sanding it (if it could be done evenly) would fix that.
Might consider this idea though. I wonder what different types of tape there are.... hmmm....

[FIX] Sensation Display Responsiveness

Hi,
I've been experiencing issues with my sensations screen not being very responsive i.e:
- taking 5 attempts to unlock the phone
- opening random apps I didnt press when scrolling through the menu
- pressing the wrong things
- not being able to write a message properly because your key presses are not registering.
- generally being very frustrating and making it hard to use the phone.
Now I know there is another thread which tells you to fully discharge your phone then leave it over night etc etc ... this worked for a few hours but didn't stick. The problem came back.
Well I have found a solution that has worked for me. So im hoping it works for all you guys. I've found out that its a GROUNDING issue. The phone case is not connecting well to the inner part.
Guide:
1. Turn off and dismatle the phone.
2. Remove battery.
3. See image below....

4. As the image sugests ... gently scratch the surface of these orange strips where the pins will touch. Use a coin, screwdriver or anything small and metal.
** SCRATCH GENTLY - IT DOESNT TAKE MUCH!!! GENTLY!!!
5. Do this for all the orange strips and the little silver one up the side of the case.
6. Once you have done this you can give the case a quick clean (I just rubbed all the dust and blew on it) gets rid of any dust etc.
7. Thats it. Put it all back together and fire it up.
** Optional - I eased the little pins ringed in red out with a small screwdriver - just to give them that extra push when connecting to the outer shell. Dont have to do this.
-----------------------------------
Now I know this is not ideal but it has worked for me. My phone is blistering now with no issues when zipping around the menus. Screen unlocks in one go.
I will be testing the phone throughout the day and reporting back my findings. But for the past 2 hours Its been perfect.
Hope this helps you guys out.
ciao.
**Note - My phone is S-OFF and i'm using Android Revolution ROM**
I have no issues so can't offer any confirmation. Hope it works out. I've been "concerned" about those contacts since I saw the design. I wonder if that has anything to do with the wifi issues? Certainly easy and cheap enough to test.
Thanks.
these connectors are coated with gold or either silver, so they will not oxidate (not know if I'm using the correct word in egnglish).
Once scratched the surface, it will oxidate a lot easyer and faster, so the problem will only get worser in the end

If it's gold and you scrape it off that could be true. Perhaps bending the contacts slightly for a bit more pressure could help. But then we'll see posts of people breaking them...
This as you said could be true. Although I have only marked a circle where the pins will make the best contact. The rest of the strip I have left covered in this gold layer. I've been using my phone allday and I can honestly say it has helped a lot! No screen issues whatsoever.

The contact points are what matter. If those corrode the problem would just come back. It takes longer than a day for corrosion to appear. Bad contact at the points you've indicated would certainly cause problems. What you don't want to do is get short term gain and long term trouble.
Assuming the problem is dirty contacts this could be a better option than scraping:

If the issue is contact pressure then slight bending of the spring parts could help.
htc need to design a new cover
i was having the same issues as you for the second week of owning the phone, first week was flawless. Through the third week however i noticed that the problems all disappeared of their own accord and returned to its out of the box state in terms of responsiveness.
Try it tonight..
It's a good shout but a bit extreme. As someone said, it could get worse in the long run.
I'll take liberty to recommend to only scratch silver pin contact on back cover. It's alluminium anyway, so can be repeated if it gets oxidated.
DO NOT SCRATCH GOLDEN CONTACTS. They are for WiFi and network antennas and have no contact with body.

Not to threadbash or flame or anything. But how does this help? I understand you said it is a grounding issue... but my phone seems to work fine *fingers crossed* and it works fine with or without the back cover on; so what does grounding have to do with anything?
There was juts one time that I missed a call, as it wouldn't slide into answer properly ...
Well i have been using the phone for over 24 hours now and the screen is still working perfectly and I have no issues with WIFI or mobile signal what so ever.
Looking at the case again, I would agree with only scratching the silver strip seeing as that's the only connecting part to the outer case.
Regarding the grounding, with my issue... My phone screen didn't function correctly without contact with the case. When I touched a certain part of the case it worked. Personally I wouldn't have designed the sensation case to work in this way, I'd have kept it similar to the DHD case but hey ho.
