Booting into recovery on the HTC Desire S
Basically it's business as usual. Hold [volume-down] and [power] when the phone's turned off.
That last bit's the tricky part - because of a feature called fast boot the DS does not really turn off when you shut it down but just hibernates. So you have to either turn off fast boot (in Settings -> Power) or pull the battery before attempting to enter recovery.

I know it's Power + Vol Down while booting up to get to the BL, but the soft buttons blink 6 times and then nothing happens.
Then i let go of the buttons, try it again, and nothing happens.
SOmetimes holding Power+volDown works, sometimes it doesnt.
What am i missing here
a program called quickboot. Only works for rooted phones
Or
connect phone to computer
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot bootloader
It's very iffy for me, the best is to use a short cut like quick boot or have an extended power menu. But if you must, power down your device, hold volume down and power for 5 seconds (I countdown like the shuttle is taking off lol) then on 5 release power but hold volume down... Should pop up every time

yea i've been using adb, but that's a hassle when im not at home
i guess i'll be giving the app a shot, but what am i doing wrong with the key presses?
should i do it with the phone off?
while rebooting?
from the OS?
what
how i do it and what i originally read to be the correct button combination is hold down power and volume down for 5 seconds, then release power button while holding volume. should work.

Turn off fastboot in power settings, if it's on when you power off the phone its like sleep, it's not actually off and that would be why it's not working for you.

If you are okay with flashing a better, faster rom compared to stock, CleanROM has this feature from the power menu. Works flawlessly.
Before that, I used adb commands.
I hold down the vol down button, then press and hold the power button for about 2 sec, continuing to hold down the vol down button until you are in the bootloader.
So the vol down button is the trigger for the bootloader.
And you have to have fastboot turned off.

This had happened to me before. I'll restart my phone and it boots normally but then I hear a beep and I've lost all my apps and my custom launcher and I see a toast like message with safe mode written on it. I cleared my cache in recovery then it boot up back to normal. Just wondering if any one has seen this.

Weird, I have seen this message on my old ipod touch but never seen on android devices

1) turn mobile phone off.
2) hold power button down until the first white HTC Screen
3) now release the power button and hold the Volume Down button, until boot finished
Now you see "safe mode".
this is from older devices and can be used for removing bad third party apps
I had a couple time where it went into safe mode on its own.
I cant enter bootloader after i turn off my bricked htc one s using 2.2.1 TWRP.i try to hold powerkey+volume -.the soft key is blinking for second after that my phone screen flashed like a old tv.what happened?what should i do?thanks
Try pressing the power button only and wait for the soft keys to flash then wait several seconds and release. Now press the power button and the volume down rocker until the bootloader shows.

I also have the old TV bug
I found that when the phone is off, if you hold down the power and vol down keys, and then start pressing the power button on and off, it will take you to the bootloader. Then you can release.
This Phone makes me crazy, the biggest problem is... its not my Phone! i borrowed it
The Phone is never rooted/unlocked
Locked - S-On
The volume down button does not work anymore.
I took the Phone apart and removed the flex cable, but had the same problem.
The Phone Always start in bootloader mode (white background and the options) if i dont do anything
If i pull the battery out and i hold volume up and power button it will boot to the Phone with safe mode.
I used a ruu from somewhere but still safe mode
I tried to unlock the bootloader with fastboot but i cant select yes with the power button (it doesnt do anything)
What are my options now, i dont mind loosing everything!
From your explanation it seems the phone is stuck with volume down button pressed/on
That's why normal boot is taking you to bootloader and from bootloader it is taking you to safe mode
Try to readjust the flex cable

Where as If I power off and power back on with the button. Its really fast, avoids the white HTC screen with the red text at the bottom. Is there a reason for this? A way around it?
My setup - HTC ONE M8 VZN with 4.4.3 NuSense Six ROM ROOT and S-OFF
Thanks all

Are you comparing simply pressing power to sleep and wake the phone to a full restart?

Here's what i'm doing. Sorry I should have given more info.
If I power down using the power menu option reboot, it then restarts the device however it doesn't "fastboot" it shuts down then brings up the white htc boot and the DEV jargon in red at the bottom, and the boot takes a REALLY long time.
If I power down using the power menu option Power Off, it shuts off quickly. Then when powering back on it skips the previous screen, fastbooting?, and shows the boot animation. This way is REALLY fast, nice for applying root things.
Just wondering if this has something to do with Xteneded settings? maybe SenseToolBox. While stock rooted, using standard power menu Reboot works great. fast booting past the dev screen.
However i'm on Nusense six ROM, I don't seem able to completely remove xteneded settings, I unchecked it from xposed, then hit uninstall, all settings remained enabled after 2 reboots. And it wanted setup again in xposed after the 3rd, seemingly to have re installed itself.
It should still show the splash screen even if you power off and back on the device
