[Q] Near Field Communications - Epic 4G Accessories

It seems like Near Field Communications (NFC) is going to be the next big sensor for portable devices. Is there any way to retrofit NFC to a device or does it need to to be on-board (literally).

It requires hardware we don't have.
This doesn't belong in accessories , please post questions in Q & A from now on.

He didn't ask if there was a way to do it TODAY

Good to see there will be an accessory to bring this capability to our phones, even if it is in the future. (I don't live in salt lake city so no NFC here yet anyway.)

Personally I think this is a bad technological improvement as it just opens up more access to our personal data for a minimal increase in the ease of our daily lives.
My plastic RFID-free credit card suits me just fine.

This is a development forum, 90% of anything discussed here isn't available yet.

As I understand it NFC will be supported natively in Gingerbread, which is in the works for the Epic right now. As far as the hardware goes, there are cradles or adapters available for some phones right now to support NFC. Since Sprint announced recently they will be making a big push this year for NFC, I would expect they would release an NFC adapter for many of their phones.

Yeah........ I do live in SLC... and I'm not looking forward to NFC.
Anything that increases the ease of transferring sensitive personal information or money to random people worries me.
Look at all the security holes RFID has.

I can't see this taking off for at least another year and by then I hope to be looking at what new phones are available. Bought a G1 on launch and I've learned my lesson in early adopting.

MT4GS or Vision

I looked up some GSM Android sliders and the Doubleshot came up as the latest and greatest Android slider. I wanted to buy it, except browsing these forums showed little to no development on it. No CM7 or MIUI, or anything. I want to know if the superior specs of this phone make up for it over the HTC Vision.
i had (have) a g2, i just got a mytouch4g slide this morning and got it rooted already, their isn't much dev works since the kernal source hasn't been released yet. the g2 has alot of great roms out for it, i loved it. im missing miui sooo much till i get on the mt4gs, but i'll wait and play with my dual core and camera for a bit. =]
Just my luck
HTC released the MyTouch 4G Slide's kernel source just an hour ago. Does this mean we'll see much more development for the phone?
Doubleshot is far superior to G2 so I would get it.

Get the Anker batteries mentioned in the Accessories board. Also, give the AOSP team time to create a vanilla/CM build for the Doubleshot.

Personal point of view on this question;
I have an HTC VISION. I got it at xmas time last year, its an excellent phone, excellent knowledge base, excellent development, and I am totally satisfied.
As the owner of an HTC VISION, I don't see any particular reason to change the hardware at this time. Not to an HTC DOUBLESHOT or to anything else.
The HTC VISION and DOUBLESHOT are fairly similar phones. In many respects, virtually identical. Consider the DOUBLESHOT basically as the upgraded VISION. It has a faster processor, more RAM, and a FRONT FACING CAMERA. If the details of the standard camera are of particular interest to you, it is also enhanced over the VISION, but for my use, this is irrelevant (I use phone camera for emergency stuff, like if some douchebag crashes into me, I use it to take evidence shots, etc., all my *real* photography is done with a REAL CAMERA).
Now my GF, amazing as she may be, had some stupid fruity piece of crap when we met, I don't know, it was labelled something like iTurd. Anyway, a few minutes of exposure to my HTC VISION, and she suddenly realized what a piece of garbage her phone was, so off to buy an HTC DOUBLESHOT. Nice phone, very slick, definite upgrade from VISION and highly recommended IF YOU'RE PURCHASING NEW. The difference isn't *that* big that I would actually be willing to fork out any money to upgrade, but there is a definite difference.
Of course, it came with that SENSE cruft. Though still better than that iCrap, it is a definite downer. Undeadk9 saved me a WHOLE LOT OF WORK by building his mostly-senseless system image (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!), which makes the phone *bearable*. The kernel source now being available, hopefully this will move right along and we can get a TRULY proper system image for this excellent hardware, but it isn't there quite yet.
At this point, I would DEFINITELY recommend that acquisitions be of HTC DOUBLESHOT rather than VISION, though both are *excellent* phones. For anybody who ALREADY HAS an HTC VISION, keep it.

If it had an HDMI output (that worked in 1080p60), and the ability to decode and playback a reasonable variety of media formats, that feature would be worth mentioning, because it would actually have a use.
Sitting 6" back from an NTSC TV is bad for your brain. Why not just look at the phone screen? The TV out on that hardware is simply not practical.

Not practical are you nuts? I watch netflix on my tv everynight not to mention emulators I play as well as going to test out a bluetooth controller as some other members are doing for games.
Not to mention a longer cord can be purchased. As well as rca 3 prong will work with older and new tvs hdmi will not unless another adapter is purchased. The picture is great quality too.
If we use your logic, looking at this small screen for an hour is just as bad as sitting six feet from a tv. Talk about a bad case of blurred vision ,headache and possible decrease in long range vision (nearsighted).
No offence but that was a dumb comment and I rarely say that.

I just got another cord to extend it. I can sit up to 18 feet back now.
Even when i'm not using it, it's still hooked up to a tv i've gotten and placed next to my desk in my work area (i've never owned a tv before...leave it to a phone to make me want one). I play music through it on the tv generally.
It's also good to have the system up on a larger screen sitting next to my computers so I can work with it more efficiently.
The idea of being restricted to a 6 foot cable is not so great, but it's a very cheap and easy solution you can fix at any radio shack, best buy, walmart, etc...

Are you interested in working together on this?
I have someone (finally...no real-life computer friends...) who is willing/able to sit down and figure it out with me. He wants to attach his wii controllers to his phone, so I have that piece of hardware to work with and two phones + a Nook Color to test it out on.
I ordered a sixaxis controller, but the order got all screwed up and i'm gonna have to deal with paypal to get my money back. I hate ebay, and usually stick with amazon, but the price seemed too good. When I can afford to try again i'll get one.
I haven't actually sat down and put all the random info together yet, but i've got a pile of raw data waiting to be sifted through.
Shoot me a pm if you're interested and we can go from there, but i'm gonna sit down with my new computer friend next week and spend a whole day - maybe two - working on this exclusively.
It may just work right away with no tweaking (lol) but if not we'd need kernel source to fix the problem. Now that we have it it's worth looking into, and this is one of those projects that got put on hold until source dropped. Starting to dust off the old ideas and run them now.
If you're that diehard about your video games, grab a console, $100-$150, and it works proper, not some crazy hack with a phone. As for netflix... same game console does that too.

Why should I buy a console that either has a history of hardware issues or a EULA that is offensive in the extreme? Particularly when I have a phone that will do the same things?
There is nothing any console on the market has that I want that my phone can't already do.

Thanks for the info. I'm purchasing the phone new, so the Doubleshot sounds nice. The camera is a welcome feature for me, since I don't want to have to carry around an actual camera. Unfortunately, most of the Doubleshot's camera features come with Sense, although I don't mind sense too much.

Android Pocket TV Dongle - might arrive by Fall?

A little news blip hit my Google Reader subscription yesterday. For some reaon, I opened up the site out of curiosity.
There appears to be a some-to-be-released TV dongle with Android's ICS running on it. The release date seems to be October 2012.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/484889112/the-pocket-tv-makes-any-tv-a-smart-tv
Anyway, I went ahead and put in for the $135 option to get the Dongle with the gyroscope remote. Looks fun to say the least.
I love my Logitech Revue, but this will give me full access to video apps like Hulu and others that are not supported with Google TV.
I think it deserves an article on the main page...
I did make the silly request of GPS as additional hardware so I could play with it, but I'm sure it doesn't make sense.
I am definitely very interested in one of these

Valid question and I'm not part of the company to answer it.
However, one thing that sets it apart would be the A9 CPU in the Kickstarter project versus the A8 in the one you shared.
What sets it apart for me is the gyroscope motion controlling and the fact that it's a start-up company that isn't shipping from China I guess. Heck, I can't even find out how that device is controlled. All I see is what appears to be pointer movement from a mouse.
I like the fact that it's a start-up of Android devs doing it based on people "buying" into the idea. It only starts if enough of us buy into it to support the kickstart/upstart of the venture.
I'll inquire on this to the company any way though. If there's much more to offer up, I'll send it this way.

The kickstarter one has a better gpu and its own ui plus a remote and can additionally use a wii like remote so is better suited for a smart tv as with the 802 it seems you have to use a wireless keyboard or mouse and navigate standard ui but that 802 looks nice and has one gig ram which more than the kickstarter one.

I think the pocket tv would be preferred as it seems more aimed at creating a user friendly smart tv and has the better gpu to handle graphics intensive apps better. It also seems to have a custom ui which if correct would be nicer than scrolling through the default ics one with a wireless mouse.
The ram of 512 mb is fine for a smart tv, and for most games, though if it had 1 gb ram it would be perfect but then I would assume it would push price up which might price it too high for some people.
Both devices are good but the pocket tv appears more user friendly and would cope better with gaming and videos. The ram difference might swing some people who prefer more of it but as a whole package the pocket tv appeals to me more because of the hardware used because it would be great to play deadspace or asphalt on with the air remote

There are a few other differences that I suspect as well. But, we should remember this is a proof concept run. Basically, enough backers mean this progresses. If there are enough backers, I'm sure a second generation would be much more impressive as far as specs go.
We can't assume this to be a major corporation with large expenditures to make a new product. Rather, it's a start-up idea that we all can participate in. If ENOUGH of us participate in it, we will get to see the first generation as thank you for believing.
I think the basis of a Kickstarter project is much more impressive than the other product mentioned. I get the chance to help the product "make."
I an pretty sure if you were to choose the mk802 over this, there are options out there that have the gyro to control as well.
I plan on purchasing the mk802 & the below for controlling it. Price for both would be about the same as the combo on this unit and I don't have to wait until September or October.

I received mine yesterday. I played with it and had no unexpected problems. But, others on their forum suggest they have issues.
One thing I did was write a guide on that forum about streaming. People don't understand containers and codecs. Just because a file plays great on some devices doesn't mean it will on others...
I'm going to try and get some people to help me create custom kernels and stuff to speed up hardware acceleration if possible.
Is there a plan on having a dedicated xda section for the Pocket TV?

DIY Android Device?

Is it plausible for an average consumer to purchase all the necessary components and build an Android smartphone/tablet?
Quite a number of people build their own computer rigs now, and I was curious to know if the same could be done with phones.
Might be a silly question, but if anyone's done it I would love to hear about it
TI processors are sold in sets of 10,000 last time I checked so in terms getting hardware it may be difficult to say the least.
I would love to do this myself but it just seems so expensive to get the hardware, I wish dell would do with phones what they did to computers.
Imagine if you could pick your cpu, ram, radio etc then choose your case.
Alas I wait for said company
So in short I don't think it's possible
Sent from my GT-I9300T using xda app-developers app
You can if you want. You will need to buy the specific hardware from the vendor and have very good electronic knowledge.
Then you can compile an Android rom for the specific hardware.
But my only doubt is whether the hardware company from which you buy the hardware will provide all necessary drivers and codecs(which are mostly closed source)
In short, it is possible but it is not worth the effort!

I think
parts of the device which will come from different country, assembling and developing rom for device will cost you more than actual device available in market plus your time wasted in waiting for parts, assembling/developing rom then testing your device on both hardware and software level
its better to buy device rather than doing all this..
Computer can be assembled easily because All the component required to build computer are easily available in our local market
For something sort of comparable, check out The Tricorder Project for an excellent example. Create your own Star Trek "tricorder" with various sensors and a touchscreen that runs on Linux for around $200 and some work putting it together.

Future dev support?

Just a quick question: does someone has an idea about the dev support this tablet is going to get? I mean, it's a pretty sweet specced tablet, but it's kinda expensive and serves a niche market (artists, note taking students,...). I want to buy this thing for taking notes during lessons, but I don't like touchwiz at all, so it kinda depends on the the dev support or am i better off with a cheaper tablet and a capacitive screen stylus?
Hi.. I used a Tab 10.1 with a capacitive stylus... but even with TouchScreenTune, that's a more or less working solution.
As soon as I heard from the Note 10.1, my decision was clear that I will buy that one as soon as it is available (and I did).
The capacitive stylus requires TouchScreenTune (really worth its money for this purpose), but writing with the stylus is more or less efficient, there is no handwriting recognition and you keep the "palm on the screen" problem. The palm detection of TouchScreenTune is ok, but that's all not comparable with the S-Pen.
When inside the range of the screen, the S-Pen allows to simply disable input from the capacitive screen (which can explain some reports regarding a non-responsive table to finger input . The precision is outstanding, the tablet is fast. Compared with my Tab 10.1, it finally got the memory card slot and with the adapters, I can attach USB devices (stick, keyboard, mouse, ...).
I tried other solutions like the echo pen (paper pencil with digital recorder requiring special paper), but in the very end I searched an "all-in" solution.. documents, notes, calender, contacts, email, ... and now, I got it.
And Samsung announced during yesterdays US release that Jelly Bean will come this year.. so I am really satifisfied.

Well, I can tell you that at least one Cyanogenmod maintainer (myself) is almost surely purchasing the device.
So CM should eventually come unless this device has some horrible surprise - but it seems like Samsung ditched the evil AR6K wifi chip and its closed-source driver that was in previous Exynos tablets in favor of the same BCM4334 that is in the I9300.
I was originally thinking I'd get the 32GB version, but remembered this actually has a MicroSD slot - gonna go for the 16, which is available locally so I may get it tonight.

I'm probably going to do a minor Touchwiz kernel initially just for slight tweaks and also to ensure that I know how to properly build a kernel - but don't expect it to be incredibly fancy. Just basic small tweaks (Possibly including TriangleAway support) and compiled from source, before moving on to CM bringup.

Wow, it's really good to see you here Entropy !!!
Really enjoyed your work with the Infuse 4G.
I'm using the i717 Note now (love it) and my good ol' 7" Tab is quickly becoming a piece of crap.
My GT-N8013 shall arrive tomorrow!

First off. There were programs developed for the Thinkpad tablet that may require little or no porting.
Second off. If the Note 10.1 sells well, as well as the Note selling well, developers will come to it.
Third. The Note is not likely to be the last tablet with a active pen. Shoot they are even selling one for the iPad now ( MyNote ) and a kickstarter starter project ( iPen ).. So I think pens will be popular enough.
Yes yes the great and wonderful Steve Jobs said "who needs a stylus". If he ever had a real job instead of stealing from Woz and telling others what to do he would know who needs a stylus, and don't forget Jobs is the guy who once said "who needs a hard drive". The Mac took off, but soon started crashing partially because you copuldn't add a hard drive without voiding the warrantee. When Sculley wanted to modify the Mas so you could add a hard drive, and other things via SCSI a great war ensued and Jobs was booted. Think about this if Jobs had stayed and the Mac never got a hard drive, would Apple still be around to make the iPod?
The sector of the public that want's a tablet with a pen maybe a miche but it is a very large niche. It doesn't include just artists and note taking students ( and students is a fairly large niche ). It includes: note taking lawyers, graphical designers of all types, editors, note taking lawyers, note taking engineers, note taking middle level bsiness men etc. This is a niche that is far from small.
So yeah I think there will be plenty of developers around.

I was originally thinking I'd get the 32GB version, but remembered this actually has a MicroSD slot - gonna go for the 16, which is available locally so I may get it tonight.

fantastic to see you here. Can't wait for your kernel. It's a fantastic device. I've been using it all day to take handwritten notes. Will cyanogenmod support the s pen
Initial feeling is that this tablet could use a Cyanogenmod blessing since it's equipped with 2GB DRAM but the bloat takes up 600-700MB on the display unit I looked at.

Right now, on the N7000, CM supports any app that uses the ICS pen APIs. There's some work to try and get one of the opensource pen apps (Such as Memo by ng93) included by default, but that's taking a while because we're all busy with JB device bringups at the moment. N80xx pen support should be equivalent to N7000 - On N7000, it was a matter of building the pen driver in the kernel and all of the ICS pen stuff immediately started working.
There's a patch in review for pen gesture support, but it needs to be forward-ported to JB and cleaned up.
S-Pen SDK apps will be a different story - that's a proprietary API which will not be supported by CM. Not sure if PS Touch supports the "vanilla" pen APIs.
Thanks for the clarification! Do you have any idea whether the S Pen SDK is better performing or otherwise superior compared to the ICS pen API? Looking at the documentation it seems like ICS should support all general pen functionality including buttons and pen position/tilt but maybe not the eraser (if this has an eraser?). Performance should just be a function of the driver, and not the API since input events should be going through the same system anyway.

[Q] Idea on Android Wristwatch

A few of in the IT department were thinking today about how nice it would be to not be tied to a singular device and instead be able to move across devices, even across multiple smartphones with ease. This led to this idea we thought we would run by the braintrust. Here's the What If:
You create an Android based Wristwatch. It will take a SIM Card so its on your mobile provider as a phone and data. It has bluetooth and is a Wifi Hotspot. It does voice, GPS, etc so its somewhat usable as a device. You could even have a small screen on it for doing some very very basic functionality.
Now, you take your Samsung S4, or Nexus 7 and you sync them together. Maybe you even have an HTC One you keep in the office. The other devices use the wristwatch for everything .. connectivity to the carrier, internet, etc. Even your car stereo would use it to connect to Pandora. Sure, you can do this now with Wifi Hotspot, but how many of us have multiple devices and feel compelled to carry them with us?
With this, the "power" for connectivity is small and unobtrusive. Now, I can use my tablet as a phone when I'm strolling around the office (why carry phone + tablet?) or even use a different phone from work vs home (S4 Active for Home, Samsung Note 3 at the office) and switching is easy (could be proximity based, or simply a button I press on the new device's home screen).
Such a device could interact with modern game consoles, smart TV's running Google TV, and other devices by enabling collaboration among users as well.
We see that people are creating wristwatch android devices, but I don't see a smart"phone" coming in that form factor with the software to link the devices together. Do you think that this would be useful to you? Do you think such a thing could exist and be popular?
Thanks, just looking to start a discussion =)

Based on the reports my smartphone shows, the largest consumption of battery is the screen itself. If you get rid of that, smaller batteries should be able to compete?
it sounds kind of like your explaining the Omate smartwatch which I think is good

Like the Sony SmartWatch?

Thanks for sharing idea and infos. Sounds cool. By the way - to solve that battery problem: Why not have a belt? There is plenty of space around my waist
