I would also like to know this. I just got an Inspire yesterday, moving over from a Dell Streak, so i'm doing the research on getting Rooted so i can throw some ROM's on this thing.
With the Streak i never had to deal with eng & radio s-off stuff and this whole Gold Card thing is a little odd too. I'm supposing its because of the different MFG's.
Thanks in advance to anyone offering their wisdom to this thread.
and the research continues...

Mainly because you have to downgrade the rom and radio. That is the simple answer.

Here is the link to the gui Bubby GUI
More then likely you will end up with a cwm black screen, if/when you do go here.

does the rc2 has a gui? because 90% of the rc1 was based on just typing commands, thats what i saw in the youtube video at least
There is no absolute, fool-proof, One Click, rooting method for the Inspire.
Do some research, take notes, watch the videos and do whichever you feel most comfortable with.
People have had success with both versions (Simple One Click and Hack Kit)

As said above there is no fool proof way. If I recall correctly the GUI uses almost the same method as the hack kit except it does most of the commands for you. They both use the same exploit they both downgrade the rom and radio to root and s-off. The major problem that people run into is that the recovery screen is black. There are work arounds for it, which are in the link I posted above.
so there is a chance that the one click root MIGHT work for this? I've read up on the hack kit, while it sounds complex, it appears very simple...

Use the hack kit or the gui, like you said, not that difficult.

I used the One Click method, in conjunction with the very fine video that accompanies it. Watch the video a couple of times, and then follow it step by step when starting the process, and you'll be fine. Although I did run into the CW black screen problem, it was an easy fix.
This thread is totally in the wrong place. Not to flame but come on. This is all over general and can be found inside of 5 min. I just read a great article about not being a fan of one click rooting. The editor had this opinion because there are all kinds of people out their rooting their phones that have no business doing so and when, and chances are good that it will happen, they brick their phones running back to their carrier for them to fix their mistakes because they don't want to do any research on their own. This in turn is leading carriers to locking down their phones with locked bootloaders and trying to figure out ways to identify root users to suspend their service. I totally agree with this article and while I encourage noobs to learn and root their phones, it requires a lot of reading and some people are just not up for it.
OK that's the end of my rant.
Please do the research and become a contributing member of xda so we can all benefit from each other and keep striving for a better android experience.

Agreed...I couldn't have said it any better.
It's not hard to root, the hardest part is following a bunch of half ass guides because people that write them expect you to know everything.
I ended up having to make my own rooting guide back when the N1 came out because I had to compile 4-5 different guides just to get all the information needed.
I can't speak for the rooting guide for the Inspire since my phone doesn't come in until tomorrow.. but we shall see
Question from a newbert
hello all,
recent convert from the atrix to inspire...had a question based on the S-off vs ENG S-off...what's the difference?
if I do this in the proper steps then will I be fully rooted, S-off, ENG s-off?
1) Bubby - HTC Inspire 4G Simple Root and S-OFF
2) jkolojo - One click ENG S-OFF
3) then flash radio? which one is better?
Radio_12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M - (HTC Ace Gingerbread S Generic 2.16.0.0)
12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M - (HTC Ace Gingerbread S Generic 2.25.0.0)
Is clockworkmod included in the Bubby root?
After that is fully installed, can I flash any ROM I want?
Thanks, really appreciated!
Also what's the difference between all the different rooting methods?
I know SuperOneClick for Atrix made a mess. Which one do you guys recommend for a beginner?
Ace Kit
attn1 root
bubby root

In the development section everyone keeps saying one click root will not happen on the inspire i was just wandering what the reason for that is i know there is one for other phones ive had just wandering why this one is different
HTC closed the bug in the radio firmware that allowed the security on the nand to be unlocked. This is why you use a goldcard to flash a rootable Rom to the phone. Once you do that you can root with a one click like visionary.

just being lazy previously, reading up on it now. Can't seem to find •HTC Inspire 4G Hack Kit v3 update as everywhere I have looked, it won't start the DL.
Although Ill probably be flogged for this... here we go. I just bought an att inspire for me and my parents. Anyway seems significantly more difficult a process than past devices ive owned; tilt 2, tilt 1, etc...
Anyways just curious if someone could spell this out for me in detail specifically for an att branded inspire from start to finish?

I dont think its you guys on the forums responsibility to put this in clear terms but would appreciate if someone could lend a hand. Like a start to finish guide for someone who is completely new to this device and the android os...
Like, what to i need to back up, wtf is booting into recovery and how is this done??? You see what i mean? To someone who is brand new to this device this is not as clear as everyone Ive asked makes it sound. I do not want the geniuses on here taking offense to this because your work is what makes this site tick but a clearly laid out and detailed process would be very much appreciated.
It really is as simple as what he says.
1: download bubbys one click method from here: http://www.inspiringandroid.com/htc/inspire/3-21-11_RC2.exe
2: Watch the video of this method on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0sQFoS_m_8
3: follow video from youtube while doing the root.
4: download and install a rom of your choice or keep the one from bubby.
5: enjoy.

the key is:
after you root, when you restart hold volume down. that opened up a world of ROMS to me.
if I had not already rooted, I would write a step by step for you.
just watch the video.
also, back up your contacts and messages to something - google or mobilego or another program like titanium backup (pre-root) before you do anything. expect to reinstall apps. (amazon is great b/c it keeps track of what you install so you can do an easy reinstall)
hey guys I have a questions. I have my phone rooted using the Simple one Click method, so that that mean my Inspire is also unlocked, like if I put a different sim it would it work or not.
If you just bought the Inspire, you more than likely don't have anything on the phone yet that needs to be backed up other than contacts, which can easily be restored via HTC sync. Bubby's method will spoon-feed you through the entire process, as the tool will do all of the dirty work for you, including the making of your Gold Card. The hack kit is just a little more hands-on, but is just as easy to use. Read through the instructions for both methods, look at the FAQs, and take a look at the threads for each method. You'll see that almost every problem that was run into was solved just by going to the FAQs or by following a quick link from the thread. If terminology is intimidating you, the Devs always do a great job of explaining steps/procedures in layman's terms. The Inspire is a challenge to root because of the necessary ROM-downgrade so that the phone can become exploitable, but take your time with the procedure and you'll get it knocked out on no time. Good luck.

As someone who has just rooted and I am a noob on Android phones. just take your time and read up on the rooting process before you start. It does look intimidating at first, but if you can follow instructions, its really not that hard. The above methods is what I used and good luck.
The point is that it's a little bit of a leap of faith... you have to follow the steps as you go not knowing what the instruction itself is gonna do the most of the time... the language is indeed intimidating but let's face it... if they say 'boot in recovery mode pressing the power button while you hold volume down' you don't need an explanation of what recovery mode means.... you just press the buttons in the order.. eventually u will understand the rest...

Instead of just clicking the link, try right clicking the link and select 'open in new tab'. Theres been several links and downloads that have done that to me too and the opening in new tab seems to work.
Edit: Its working for me here at work (WinXP machine) but home machine (Win7) it will do that also, pop up a blank window and even have the security bar at the top and nothing happens after approving security. But if I open in new tab instead, works every time

Except for the black cwm screen but there is a fix for it if you go two or three pages back I have a thread posted
Sent from skynet using XDA Premium Resistance App
The hack kit IMO is easy enough it's worth doing it that way over the "one click" method.
The CWM black screen is due to something not going right with the Super One Click...even with a fix for it wouldn't you sleep better knowing it was done right from the start?
I used Simple One Click and never had the cwm black screen. Not everybody has that issue.
what blank screen issue? you're scaring me
I hope this doesn't become another versus thread, we've already been down this road. They're both great but both require paying attention and common sense. Read, research and be merry.
Sent from Desire HD or Inspire 4G or whatever this thing is called via premium XDA app.
Ummm, the One Click fixes the black screen too - click Fixes and it will enable full S-OFF by flashing the engineering bootloader.
I personally used the One-Click method. I also got the black screen for CWM.
I have read the tutorials for both. BOTH methods are very solid. And BOTH methods work.
What it boils down to is this: Can YOU follow instructions? If you can, you will be fine, using either method. the One-click specifically states that some users WILL experience a black screen issue. AND it tells you how to fix it, which is built right into the program.
In conclusion: Pick one. Read the instructions completely. Then download EVERYTHING you will need. Then test your ADB is working properly. Then read the tutorial again. Then start.
I found the one-click method to be pretty easy and did not get the black screen. Tribalartgod is right, though: be sure to read over all the directions for whichever method you choose, and get everything you need downloaded in advance. A user did a youtube video for the one-click which I also found helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0sQFoS_m_8

One Click is faster and easier as long as you can follow instructions. Example, if you forget to put it back on Charge Only mode, you have to start the whole process over again. Also when you get to rage, the terminal app doesn't always restart itself so you have to exit the app after it forks the childs and then continue from there.
I personally think that it was faster using the One Click but I'm also adept at following instructions - it took me about 25-30 minutes total to get totally rooted, radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. Its certainly a LOT faster to make the goldcard with the One Click.
i pretty much used both..i used the 'one click'..but i got the black screen..so i had to follow the other set of instructions to fix..which was part of the instructions for the 'hack kit'..after that i did eng s-off..very simple tool..
I'm about to buy, almost positive, a Inspire 4G on ebay.
Only question is, are all of them rooteable, or are some models that are not?
I've never come across anyone with an unrootable Inspire/Desire HD.
WOW. That was a quick reply.
OK, so i shouldn't care about versions of the phone.
Are all the same then, or is some version more desirable than others?
I still remember my Magic, that there where different versions, like the touch, like the canadians, etc, and some had some advantates.

If a phone model is already rootable , it always will be.
AN inspire only has one version anyways, other than the OS version....
Well, if they fix the way a root has been applied, no.
I ordered one off of ebay and will be sim swapping between this and an iPhone 4 unless I root it and use it for my Tmobile account.
Will Super One Click be all I need to root this or will I need to use it and Hack Kit? I used SOC or what ever when I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S and it was a piece of cake.
Also is there any simple way to Unlock this outside of purchasing an Unlock Code?
I used bubby's simple root twice in the last 24 hours. It's absolutely all you need.

They kind of did, that's why the exploits have to push a (signed) Desire rom to the phone to gain temp root in order to permanently turn off the signing requirement. So unless they change the design to where the baseband can't be downgraded (ala iphone) this exploit can't be closed.... and the redesign wouldn't effect already produced phones anyway.

and after many reviews i have find out that all the tablets and devices are the same in their stracture but still icould not understand why there is so many troble to make a normal 4.0 isc with root on the xoom.
and why all the fuzz about the europe version of the device ?
i don't andrstand why programmers and hackers have such troble in making a simple one click root solution as people have done for other devices please explaine it to me.
thank you,
Daniel.
p.s. please understand that i am a simple user.
One click roots are nice but they take away any and all learning. So most people root not understanding what they have just done. They just rooted to root. Making you peg away at the command line quickly shows you what your changing and how. Yeah it takes more then 2 mouse clicks. But it never took me more then 5 minutes either. Now all the roms I use are pre rooted. But I honestly prefer command line to one click. Just a personal preference.

I'm quite sure one click root is not universal for all devices even on the same version, unless it was some exploit such as the zergrush which is just temporary. Another issue is that one click root, there is a higher chance of bricking the device due to the fact it might not have been specifically developed for that device.
If you want an One click solution try LordAIOTool works cool
