Quick Question, Google - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed a rom and I'm stuck on the GOOGLE screen. Roms flash completely but after I reboot the screen stays in GOOGLE?
Any ideas what I can do? I hard reset and no go!

Do a full wipe. Factory data then wipe the cache and dalvik then reflash the rom.

Thanks, I did that and than I go into recovry and flash a rom and it either freezes half way whil installing or it goes all the way through. BUT, once I reboot it stays on the GOOGLE logo forever!
Any other ideas?

Check the md5 and make sure your download was not corrupt. What rom are you trying to flash? It is for the nexus s correct.

I'm sorry but what is the MD5? And I have tried a few roms for nexus s. Latest one is BOFTAIN-NS-V1.
Btw, when I install a rom i get E:ERROR IN /SDCARD/MIUIDEV.....ZIP (STATUS 7)."INSTALLATION ABORTED" What does STATUS 7 MEAN?

MD5 has (or checksum) functions as a compact digital fingerprint of a file. The download file and on both ends should have the same number. As for the status 7 not sure. I have never had that issue. I do recall others in the past did. What recovery version do you have?

I tried another thread that said to download the stock 2.3 gingerbread.... and the file is a backup for the nandroid something something. I did just as the instructiond stated.
But when it tries to restore it says CAN'T MOUNT SYSTEM. and it stops right there.

GOT IT! I downloaded and flash 3.0 version and its working!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I have the latest one.
It's v 3.0.2.4 CWM
Topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
Don't forget to download the right one.
If you have nexus s super clear lcd (i9023) download the second one.
If you have the other one w/ SAMOLED (i9020) it's the first.
And flash it via fastboot

Hope it helps

The 3.0.2.4 CWM is a unofficial release. The official release is 3.0.0.5.
But regardless, both should work the same.
@Jasjer: Glad to hear its working

Sorry. I just put this because I think is better because I really don't like the lots of no's on 3.0.0.5 .
Thanks in advance.

yeah thats the only obvious change.. unofficial doesn't necessarily mean bad, just saying if you encounter bugs with the unofficial one try the official one.
i personally use 3.0.0.5 because im used to the No's

[Q] CM7 to Stock 2.3.4

Hey,
I'm new to Android, and still pretty bad with it, so when I set out to flash a custom rom last week, I never bothered to setup a backup. I didn't think it was going to be as complicated to get back to the way it was when I took it out of the box. I guess I'm still use to the iPhone. Now, I'm not completely happy with my phone and am looking to go back to stock.
I've looked in to it, and it seems easy enough, but I just have a couple of questions:
Pre-CM7 I'm pretty sure my phone was GRI54, and i9020, It's now GRI40. Does this make any difference?
And, finally, where can I download an official version of this?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

I've downloaded the i9020a one, but when I'm trying to update it it's saying "Installation aborted". I tried doing it from clockwork mod - and I don't know anything about it. Do you know where I'm going wrong here?

Sorry, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've tried using that zip a few times (286d814dee5b.signed-sojua-GRJ22-from-GRI54.286d814d.zip 12mb) and it says install failed.
I boot into recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, install zip from sd card, pick the file, agree.
Have you checked the MD5 hash to ensure the download isn't corrupt?

yes, the default for all stock 2.3.4 roms will restore the recover back to stock on each reboots you have to rename/delete the install-recover.sh script to prevent it from happening

Sorry? I have to delete the files to keep clockwork from being removed?
All I did was flash it, restart, and clockwork was still there.
Also, my phone's internet speeds seem really slow now. Could this be from now having a different build? (GRI54 -> GRJ22)
Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge. It's quite obvious I jumped into something that's much over my head.

A stock rom has the script. So flashing it will also restore stock recovery. If the rom you installed does not restore the recovery partition, the the rom was not completely stock.

I've never used it myself.
Looking over the zip file, the script has been renamed, so it's not 100% stock.
Normally you would need to root the phone to change the file name.
Perhaps renaming the file in the zip will correct the issue?
try renaming /etc/install-recovery.sh.bak to /etc/install-recovery.sh and re-apply the zip. ( no need to wipe )
That rom was posted by dsixda, he may be able to confirm what needs to be done.
If you had root, it would be fairly easy to rename it.

This doesn't seem to work. It does gets you back to stock rom but I still have the old modem I flashed, old APN, CWM Recovery and still there and factory reset doesn't works. Just hangs with the little Android guy and an exclamation mark.
Is there something like ODIN for Nexus S to go back to stock?

This should work:
http://android.grdlock.net/index.ph... S&PHPSESSID=9dc0c107b878587d1e0b21ec1e3130ef
This should bring you to stock 2.3.3 for the i9020a
Then apply the official patch:
http://android.clients.google.com/p...5b.signed-sojua-GRJ22-from-GRI54.286d814d.zip
This will then bring everything to stock 2.3.4 with proper baseband and recovery

CWM vs TWRP ??

I'm very new to android and have been using Clockworkmod Recovery basically since day 3 or 4 since I got my HTC One XL...
I'm just wondering how many of you are using TWRP instead of Clockworkmod Recovery.. and if so, do you recommend me flashing that instead of CWM?
I have no real complaints with CWM and dont mind using the volume keys to navigate. But besides that, are there any real advantages besides the touch interface?? also, can someone post a link where i can find TWRP ?
thanks guys!! I LOVE the community on here!! it's great!!!
also, when people refer to "Touch Recovery" are y'all referring to TWRP ?

I personally use twrp I like its setup look and feel and it is a little speedier than cwm when making backups, flashing etc in my opinion. I used cwm on every phone I had except this one x. After twrp was introduced I switched and love it.

i believe CWM is also touch screen, just no buttons, so you gotta be careful not push a wrong link - but they have conf screen as well.... haven't tried TWRP - would also like to know if it has any advantages... thanks!

to go back to CWM, all you would need to do is place the CWM.img in the fast boot folder, and
go to the dir where u have fastboot files (mine is c:\fastboot ) but i am also running a virtual machine on a mac.. process should be the same since i'm still using windows..
anyways in command prompt.. navigate to c:\fastboot
and then,
fastboot flash recovery CWM.img
(or whatever your clockworkmod recovery image is named)
I haven't tried this, but it's how i originally flashed cwm and it's how i just flashed twrp.... so far it's sweet, a lot more options as well.. don't see myself going back anytime soon. (sorry cwm devs, still love cwm)

right, wish I'd known that before. I ended up in bootloops when using twrp to ry and restore a cwm nandroid. luckily, i was able to reflash a beans rom and get it running again, but in the process, I believe I have messed up something. the kernel, bootloader, maybe how the file system is set up. dont mix them up. choose one and stick with it.
Well, I'm pretty sure that one, twrp is simpler, more pretty, more useful, faster, easier.
Also Pretty sure cwm in some cases ruins your phone forever.
Go a head and use cwm though.
TWRP has and official release for the One XL although last time I checked CWM only has a port. I highly suggest using TWRP. It should work better
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Another advantage of TWRP is that the sdcard can be mounted while in recovery mode. I don't think that's supported in CWM.
That may be the case for the htc, the thing is, I am on a verizon samsung galaxy s 3.
I wonder if that makes a difference!?
I was reading elsewhere in these forums that the non kexec kernels ( meaning that the bootloader is actually unlocked) don't work as well on twrp

Every device is different, this discussion is about the One X(L). If you want more info on CWM vs. TWRP on the Galaxy S3, head over to the forum for your device. Don't follow the GS3, but would assume that its officially supported by CWM (which makes a huge difference). That is not even the case for the One X. Its not yet officially supported, and the CWM we have is just a port. Although an official version is in testing.

On the main/home TWRP screen, go Wipe>battery stats.
But battery stats get wiped every time you charge the phone, anyway. There is not benefit to wiping it manually: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/

Have you tried reflashing CWM via fastboot? Could just be your recovery got borked and you need to reflash recovery.
You can also try reflashing CWM via ROM Manager.
edit: Your img file might be corrupt, did you compare the MD5 sum? How are you flashing recovery?

No you don't have to do all of that,
Just download the correct CWM recovery.img file, CHECK the MD5, then flash via fastboot, you don't have to start fresh or anything.

I got that it's an HTC device running Sense 4 but we might help you find a better CWM recovery link if we know which device you're using on what carrier.

Awesome!
Glad we got you back up and running, it can be a real pain when the issue is a bad img file and you can't seem to figure out what is going on, but people need to remember to check MD5 sums for recoveries, radios and bootloaders lest they brick.
I don't think you need to upload since that link seems to work, they can just find the CWM for that phone from the link I provided and flash via fastboot from there.
Cheers bro, let us know how it's going after you flash the ROM

Yea it is, but I think it's more for Motorola devices. I don't know what HTC uses if anything different. But my phone would boot to the OS so I could still install apps via the SD card. Once I got that properly reinstalled I could access the boot menu again.

Hi all,
Apology if this questions may already been ask millions of time but I am really stucked at the moment and hoping that someone may guide me to the correct direction.
I have got HTC One X-LTE (Evita)
I managed to get S-OFF and also CID - 111111
It has TWRP 2.6
The last time I got it working was on the STOCK 4.2.2 I downloaded from the XDA - then I got into the issues of rebooting and loosing signal from time to time. so I went into my TWRP backup I had and reflashed it using my old backup made from my TWRP.
the reflashed failed and now I can only boot up to the HTC logo and then black screen.
I can get to the TWRP recovery and I have got fastboot and ADB on my PC.
When I run the fastboot devices command --> it shows device connected BUT when i try ADB command ---> no device is found.
It will be much appreciated if someone can guide me to the right direction as I am really stucked at the moment not sure where to start.
I tried searching in the forum but I don't think I went to the correct area/tutorial.
Please help
Thank you
When you made your twrp backup did you select system, data, and boot? If it's hanging at the HTC screen it seems there is not boot.img installed or one that is incompatible with your backup. Open whatever Rom your backup is made from and copy the boot.img to your fastboot directory. Then reboot the phone into fastboot mode and flash the boot.img using this command.
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Then reboot the phone and see what happens

Thanks for the reply.
When looking at the TWRP backup I copied into my PC - does not have the .img - the one I can find is MD5
Can I use the existing ROM I donwload from XDA like : EVITA_UL_JB_50_S_TMO_DE_5.08.111.2_By_Turge.zip
when I extracted EVITA_UL_JB_50_S_TMO_DE_5.08.111.2_By_Turge.zip - I can see the "boot.img" can I use this one?
Thanks

I had a somewhat similar experience with Viper 4.0 ROM - I managed to get Cyanogenmod installed correctly (particularly this one). Take a shot and see if it works - atleast your phone will be up and working.

hmm - Im on ROM dated 09/13, which is not present now. Your best bet would be http://get.cm/get/aOM
Also remember to flash Google Apps (play store, etc.) which is packaged separately here - http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip

Hi Sandy
Thank you again for your help
I finally got my phone at least booting again.
What i did was I went to the fastboot and then correct to the PC and when it was asking for format the drive, I did format it (fingers crossed) and luckily it let me see the ROm I downloaded from the Stock 4.2.2 Turge version.
Now my problem is that the phone keeps rebooting.
I don;t know how to flash the kernel as suggested on the front page of the thread.
What is the most stable ROM at the moment?
I want to learn how to flash and fix this - I have kept reading post after post but I still can not get myself to where I want it to be which is fixing the reboot issue from the STOCK 4.2.2 Turge version.
I am a real newbie so I am not too familar with some of the fancy terms people use.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

You can either flash the kernel, which can be found in the Android Development section, flashing the kernel is just like flashing a ROM, just install in Beastmode. Or you can upgrade your firmware to 2.15, the instructions are I'm the first post of the ROM thread.
Asking which ROM is best/favorite/most stable is against the rules so we can't answer that question.
When you say the phone keeps rebooting, does it ever make it into the OS or is it boot looping (showing the boot animation then starting over)?

When you said that flashing kernel is the same as flashing ROM, I did it By going to TWRP and the press install and locate the zip file. Is this what should be done?
What is beast mode?
Sorry for the basic questions
Thanks
Yeah that's how you install the kernel. It must be done after you install the ROM. I kinda worded my reply a bit weird, sorry about that. Beastmode is the name of the kernel, you can find it here:

I did try to flash it through recovery but it always failed. Not sure why. I copied the kernel zip file into my phone sd and then I went to recovery and press the install and located the kernel zip file but still failed.

Which recovery version are you using?
Sent from my Evita
Recovery is 2.6.3.
The process failed on not able to fine the MD5 file or something like that. We don't need to extract the Zip file do we?
Cheers
Disable md5 checking in settings. You never need to extract a kernel or ROM zip.

I have checked the setting in TWRP and nothing is ticked.
When I flash the zip, it is still saying "failed due to md5 does not exists".
I am not sure which should be address first but I now noticed that there is an error : "unable to locate storage device"
also came out.
When I plug my phone to PC I can see the storage but why it is saying "storage device not found" in TWRP?
Thanks

update to latest OTA and recovery issue

HI all, I have CM12 installed on my rooted phone and this morning when I switched it on, I got a message saying:
"WARNING: Update Cyanogen recovery is disabled. This may cause issues with updating your device. Please enable Update Cyanogen recovery in developer options"
Now, that option is off because I have my custom recovery TWRP installed on the phone, I'd like to keep that and I don't want to reinstall it after the update, so I believe I should ignore the message, but what I wanted to check with you guys is whether ignoring it will in fact cause any issues as this is the first time ever I've seen this message (this update by the way I think is the first one after installing CM12).
Any idea?
thanks
Disregard the message.
Thanks Heisenberg,
I did that but when the phone restarts trying to install the update, it goes straight into recovery mode (TWRP) and from there I don't think I can install the update, as none of the options seem to allow me to do so, see screenshot http://s23.postimg.org/6d6s7wyq3/IMG_20150625_135453.jpg
All right, I downloaded the zip from here http://cyanogen-ota-bacon.somee.com/ and tried to flash it from TWRP, but I get an error, screenshot here http://s28.postimg.org/zb06wtcpp/OTA_error.jpg, any idea why?
Same here, got an error in TWRP logs that prevented the update to install.
I'd like to avoid reflashing stock recovery only to install the update...
Heres the log: http://s29.postimg.org/njqqqlfc7/Screenshot_2015_06_25_08_49_42.png
Seems something related to outdated "build fingerprint" my device has currently 12.0-YNG1TAS17L
I guess the alternative would be to do it thru Cyanogen Recovery, but let's see what more knowledgeable members have to say as, like you, I don't want to have to reinstall TWRP and SU just for the sake of the update
Looks like you cant use the official update with TWRP. Either flash it via cyanogen recovery then flash back TWRP, or use a differnt zip for update not the official
Thanks for clarifying that davebugyi, then so be it, I'll do it thru cyanogen recovery and then reflash TWRP and probably SU as well
thanks

Ah, sorry forgot to ask, is there an unofficial update? If so where do I get it from?

thanks! Ah OK I see so that's the whole ROM there as opposed to just an update

Is it safe to flash only that zip from TWRP over the stock Cyanogen OS?
Yes, but if I'm not mistaken, judging from the file size, that's the whole ROM

The file I quoted is not a whole ROM, it's 31 MB.
AH OK, sorry I thught you referred to the 500mb file
Apparently even by enabling cyanogen recovery, I still can't get the updated installed as the phone keeps rebooting in the TWRP recovery, which is very odd.
I'm having the same issue. Anyone?
Got the same problem. Any idea?

The solution seems to be installing the new ROM provided. Related problem here http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/twrp-cm-android-version-mismatch-t3147658
