CWM vs TWRP ?? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I'm very new to android and have been using Clockworkmod Recovery basically since day 3 or 4 since I got my HTC One XL...
I'm just wondering how many of you are using TWRP instead of Clockworkmod Recovery.. and if so, do you recommend me flashing that instead of CWM?
I have no real complaints with CWM and dont mind using the volume keys to navigate. But besides that, are there any real advantages besides the touch interface?? also, can someone post a link where i can find TWRP ?
thanks guys!! I LOVE the community on here!! it's great!!!
also, when people refer to "Touch Recovery" are y'all referring to TWRP ?

I personally use twrp I like its setup look and feel and it is a little speedier than cwm when making backups, flashing etc in my opinion. I used cwm on every phone I had except this one x. After twrp was introduced I switched and love it.

i believe CWM is also touch screen, just no buttons, so you gotta be careful not push a wrong link - but they have conf screen as well.... haven't tried TWRP - would also like to know if it has any advantages... thanks!

will try

just backed up my current rom... twrp seems a little more thorough with more options and there's even a progress bar when backing up.

to go back to CWM, all you would need to do is place the CWM.img in the fast boot folder, and
go to the dir where u have fastboot files (mine is c:\fastboot ) but i am also running a virtual machine on a mac.. process should be the same since i'm still using windows..
anyways in command prompt.. navigate to c:\fastboot
and then,
fastboot flash recovery CWM.img
(or whatever your clockworkmod recovery image is named)
I haven't tried this, but it's how i originally flashed cwm and it's how i just flashed twrp.... so far it's sweet, a lot more options as well.. don't see myself going back anytime soon. (sorry cwm devs, still love cwm)

+1. Yea it's easy to flash back and forth between recoveries. Just do it the same way you flash the first one.

right, wish I'd known that before. I ended up in bootloops when using twrp to ry and restore a cwm nandroid. luckily, i was able to reflash a beans rom and get it running again, but in the process, I believe I have messed up something. the kernel, bootloader, maybe how the file system is set up. dont mix them up. choose one and stick with it.

Well, I'm pretty sure that one, twrp is simpler, more pretty, more useful, faster, easier.
Also Pretty sure cwm in some cases ruins your phone forever.
Go a head and use cwm though.

TWRP has and official release for the One XL although last time I checked CWM only has a port. I highly suggest using TWRP. It should work better

Another advantage of TWRP is that the sdcard can be mounted while in recovery mode. I don't think that's supported in CWM.

That may be the case for the htc, the thing is, I am on a verizon samsung galaxy s 3.
I wonder if that makes a difference!?
I was reading elsewhere in these forums that the non kexec kernels ( meaning that the bootloader is actually unlocked) don't work as well on twrp

Every device is different, this discussion is about the One X(L). If you want more info on CWM vs. TWRP on the Galaxy S3, head over to the forum for your device. Don't follow the GS3, but would assume that its officially supported by CWM (which makes a huge difference). That is not even the case for the One X. Its not yet officially supported, and the CWM we have is just a port. Although an official version is in testing.

On the main/home TWRP screen, go Wipe>battery stats.
But battery stats get wiped every time you charge the phone, anyway. There is not benefit to wiping it manually: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/

Successful root and unlock, can't get past splash screen :( Help

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum.
Today I successfully perm rooted my Doubleshot...
Then I tried to flash CM9 Alpha 5 using CW recovery.. downloaded the .zip...
Flashed it.. hit reboot... and it wont get past the mytouch splash screen.
I've tried flashing other roms, and other alphas.. but they all don't reboot into the rom.
I can still boot into recovery and get into ClockWork..
Any ideas on what I can flash or do to at least get any rom running on here... I'm not even picky at this point... I just wanted something like CM7 or some AOSP.
Thanks in advance.

1) This goes in General. I don't know why the mods can't just add a Q&A board to remove the n00b confusion.
2) Fastboot the ROM's boot.img before booting up.

You have to take the bootimage from the rom that you are using and put in a folder and name it so you can reconize it. You follow the command prompt instructions they give in this thread. You have to have some knowlege of a PC in order to be successful. I had the same problems as you did. You can get it to work... Do you know how to use the command prompt for your PC?

Last question before I fastboot, is it necessary to have the SDK or ADB to fastboot? Can I fastboot/flash the kernel using Hasoon's all-in-one-kit (the app I used to attain root)? Or is it too late since now the device wont boot and Hasoon "can't find the device"?
I have the boot.img I want in a place where I can locate it. Can I use the command prompt without the SDK/ADB?
Interestingly enough I was able to mount using recovery, and boot a new kernal... phone won't boot but at least it's stuck at a different splash screen lol "mikroms"..
I'm calling this progress.
*UPDATE*
Ok, got it!
I mounted the phone to my computer using recovery and used the Hasoon kit to flash the CM boot image.. then I rebooted and got the mikroms splash screen. That was because the last zip i flashed wasn't CM.. it was the MikRom..
so I went back into recovery, flashed CM.. now I'm good!

Of course not. 'Fastboot' is an 'ADB' command. BUT if Hasoon's tool 'can't find device'....that's an ADB error message and you probably don't have all the drivers installed that you need but he has the necessary files included for what you need for 'Unlocked" & recovering from a mess-up. You may as well go ahead & install ADB tho....you'll eventually need it.

I believe what you did is 'Flash' a ROM from MikROMs but the kernel didn't go because you have S-On. Take that same '.zip' you just flashed, look inside it and put the file named 'boot.img' where you can find it in the windows 'path' and THEN
'fastboot flash boot boot.img' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556
You should boot up fine then.

[Q] Steps to root and flash a new rom

Coming from a DX, the process to root / flash on the galaxy doesn't seem that much different. Although, there seems to be greater risk for issues around imei information, etc....
So, I've read about everything I can on the forums, trying to make sure I understand all of the ins and outs and I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable with the process, however I would like someone to just confirm that i've got everything correct......
Based on this guide ( [GUIDE][VZW Edition]How to root your Galaxy SIII & More!(ROMs/CWM/Stock)) , this is how I understand things if somone could either comfirm or correct my information I would greatly appreciate it!
1. using section 2 in the guide for windows users, I use the RootDebugFS bat file to root the phone.
2. After rooting, and prior to unlocking the boot loader, I backup my IMEI using Comprehensive IMEI/EFS Backup method listed in the guide.
3. From here I can unlock the bootloader and install CWM reovery.
4. At this point, back in the droid X world I would take a back up of my system so I have a semi - stock image to go back to.
5. Now I can download any of the different custom roms listed and follow the instructions in the OP to flash that rom.
Going back to stock.
1. Should I need to go back to Stock, I would just use the ODIN tool to flash one of the stock images.
Again, If someone could just let me know if i've missed anything or if I'm WAY off base I would appreciate it.
Thanks again, and I love the forum and the community!
yep you got it correct...also if you have any questions feel free to post in my thread!

I've got 2 more questions....
1. I tried to flash the synergy backup for the IMEI/EFS using stock recovery as per the instructions and I got a message that the signatures or something like that wasn't correct and it was aborted.... Thoughts?
2. As far as custom recoveries go.... I'm used to CWM, but I've heard a lot of good things about TWRP. Which would you recommend?

#1-Have never had to use it as I have never lost IEMI. May be a way to disable signature check in recovery. Can do permanent fix with terminal emulator.
Type:
su (enter)
reboot nvbackup (enter)
#2- Recovery is personal choice. I have been using TWRP since pre-order release and never had a bad flash or backup. As far as I'm concerned it rocks. Easier navigation and looks good. Some prefer CWM. To each their own. Don't recommend flashing via Rom Manager. Flash straight from recovery.

So i guess I felt out of date and wanted to root my phone and use that cm10 rom or whatever everyone else is and i messed it up real bad. I've flashed a clean recovery.img but whenever i try to access recovery , it brings me back to that screen with the red words. In addition , my phone is rogers so i can't even find a correct RUU to install. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get my phone to work again ? Any help is greatly welcomed !
P.S Wow i think it got worse , now it doesnt even loop again , it goes start into that menu bootloader, reboot , power down.. Omg i spent 5 hours looking into this. I NEED HELP!

..... It says that on every One X, it's HTC telling whoever turns the phone on that you used HTCDev.com
Make Sure you have TWRP (recovery) flashed/installed ... then in the bootloader go into recovery and flash cm10 ... and since you probably have the newer hboot 1.14 that means that you HAVE to flash the kernel (boot.img) via fastboot
Which is simple,
flash cm10
then reboot into the bootloader > fastboot
extract the boot.img from the cm10.zip
and fastboot flash boot boot.img
then your done reboot and enjoy.... (anything else read threw the forum, all your answers have been asked by somebody else already)
On rogers he won't have the 1.14 hboot, which means all he has to do is install the rom.
Try flashing the recovery again (TWRP ONLY!)
And then reinstall CM10

That might be your problem. CWM isn't supported for this phone and has been known to corrupt data.
Links for all the files you need are in a sticky in the Development forum. Here's the link for TWRP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677447
Once you've got that, you can wipe your phone inside TWRP (don't do it in bootloader--you'll have to reformat your sd card), and reflash CM10.
That link requires me to use that GOO manager? Confused lol i have TWRP on my computer but not sure the steps to use it ..

Read up, get adb working. Then you can install TWRP using adb.
So first i need to get adb working , then install TWRP to wipe my phone? To access that i flash TWRP and go into recovery right ?
EDIT: So .. i've downloaded that adb , and i got a bunch of files.. what do i do with this? I put them into my fastboot folder in my C drive.. Also i need to unlock my phone to do this right ? Cause i accidently relocked it .
EDIT: OKAY i rooted my phone , and got into TWRP , tried a factory rest under the wipe menu. http://i48.tinypic.com/13yklep.jpg It says fails.. what do i do ?

The Rogers HTC One X IS a HTC One XL. Rogers just branded it. The OneX has the Tegra 3 Quad Core Processor, the One XL has the S4 Dual Core Processor. Your phone is the same as the ATT Version. Trust me
Okay got the evita one but it still says same msg , should i proceed? :S

No problem. Just be glad you didn't flash an international Rom. They can render your device completely unusable. Remember only flash things from this forum and enjoy

[SCH-I705] Help can I unbrick my tablet

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 VZW and was trying to install the ClearRom, but I guess I forgot to unlock bootloader, so now everytime I turn the tab on I get message statitng " System Software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone."
I have a backup from before I tried installing the ROM but don't know what to do with it
Any help will be appreciated

HOw did you make the backup? CWM? If so, then install CMW recovery and do a restore.

I tried getting into recovery mode, but I get the following screen everytime, I think I need the Stock Firmware to flash with ODIN but I don't know where to find it.
<iframe src="https://skydrive.live.com/embed?cid=47A1A726F16BDCFD&resid=47A1A726F16BDCFD%212570&authkey=AE3MPZ8PewFeQos" width="180" height="320" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>
Always, ALWAYS, follow directions exactly how they're laid out.
What you need to do is download the aboot.img to your sd card. Reboot into recovery, ADB Shell into your device (you may need linux for this part as Windows doesn't recognize the device in recovery mode). Once you ADB into recovery, make sure you are root (noted by # instead of $).
Then:
dd if=/sdcard/aboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
reboot download
This should unlock you bootloader so you can get by verizons pesky warning.
We can't see the picture you tried attaching.

I cannot get to recovery mode, only download mode, also ClearRom did not specify that the bootloader, that is why I did not even bother

You'll more than likely have to send it back. There has been no official release of stock firmware, unfortunately (none that I have found at least). In the root thread there are steps 1 - 3 for a reason. 1 - Root, 2 - Unlock and Recovery, 3 - Custom ROM. Always follow directions.

Actually, according to here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558 you just need download mode to install the stock image and then follow the rest of the steps.

DO NOT INSTALL A P3100 ROM. It's not the same hardware (not really even close), so that would only make it worse.

imnuts is correct. These devices are extremely different and really does need it's own subforum so people don't keep getting confused. The i705 is closest to the i535 (s3), nearly identical actually.

It still wouldn't work. boot, recovery, and system for the s3 are designed for the s3. The hardware is the same, but the software has it's differences. What differences, though, is beyond me.
I have the same issue, this is the first time I've ever "Bricked" a device. Thought I followed the instructions correctly, I can successfully flash recovery.tar.md5 on Mr.Hydes thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558 but when it goes to reboot it gives me the Yellow ExclaTriangle "System software not authorized by Verizion , yadi, yadi ya da".
I can get into Download mode but NO RECOVERY, Tried flashing (With ODIN) CWM 6.0.1.9 located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044630 but ERROR with NAND WRITE FAIL.
Does anyone have a PIT file? I want give Heimdall a stab at it before I go throw it through Verizon's front window. Appreciate any help, like I said I understand the importance of following Instructions, I've done plenty of Android devices before including The Original GTab7, I dont mind cracking it open either, I've already had it apart to disconnect the battery but that did no help either, BTW it's really easy to open up.
Sounds like you didn't flash the unsecure bootloader

I couldn't boot into Recovery to Flash, I'm Trying to flash now using Odin but get "Secure Check Fail". Any Ideas?
The bootloader needs to be flashed before the recovery using the dd command. Its listed first under step 2, before the recovery.

Yeah that's where I'm confused, I've had it rooted and unlocked since November following your original Development, I was on G3 not J1. Followed the Instructions and then crap.
Unlocked since Nov and it just now crapped? That doesn't make any sense.. When you boot into download mode right now, what orientation is the screen? Portrait or landscape? Landscape would mean a correctly flashed aboot.img (boot loader)

I followed this thread of yours in the beginning of NOV. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942674 I was rooted and unsecured bootloader, had CWM and SuperUser, but there weren't any ROMS out yet. Everything was fine until I went to install CleanRom the other day.
Portrait Orientation in Download mode.

Tab 2 will only boot to CWM

So we were trying to update my friend's Tab 2 to a 4.4.2 ROM. We got CWM 6.0.2.3 installed, and tried a ROM. Well this failed, and appeared to break other stuff as it now boot loops to CWM. Actually I think it's going every other book to CWM. Right now it's saying battery depleated. I've got it plugged intoa charger, hopefully it'll take a charge.
I did later realize we weren't using a new enough version of CWM, but regardless, any ideas how to recover from this? It does not appear to be able to go into download mode. It only goes to CWM. I've tried flashing other ROMs but that doesn't seem to be working either.
So...kinda stuck for the moment.
Thanks!

We have a winner... the next one who didn't pay any attention - i.e. reading the OP post of the ROM thread.
ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.x.y is ONLY for flashing CyanogenMod up to 10.1.3.
For flashing OMNI ROM or CyanogenMod 11 (both Android 4.4.2 at the time of writing) you _NEED_ to use TWRP (recommended for OMNI) or PhilzTouch Advanced Recovery or ClockworkMod Swipe Edition (recommended for CM11). See AndroidAndi's file repository to obtain a copy of the correct recovery for your particular model of the Tab 2.
Next thing to do: Download and install ODIN, install the "Samsung USB Drivers" (Google's your buddy), download the .tar.md5 of the recovery you want to flash (see above and make a choice), put the tablet into download mode, flash the recovery.
If that worked flash the custom ROM of choice (+gapps if CM11, +SuperSU if OMNI) through the custom recovery you just installed and be glad you didn't turn the tablet of your friend into a paperweight.

Speaking of not reading OPs and paying attention...I already said I realized that was the issue, and that I can't seem to get it to go into download mode, so that's likely paperweight land?

If you're down to "can't get it into download mode anymore" (I start to assume the attempt to flash some 4.4.2 ROM through CWM 6.0.x.x may overwrite partitions it's not supposed to overwrite) the only way left to breathe life back into the tablet is to resort to JTAG (UART port connection, CASUAL restoration package, USB Jig to force the tablet into UART mode).
If you search on XDA you will discover tons of threads by AdamOutler dealing with that topic, maybe that's useful to you in any way to figure out if that's an option for you.
Does it stay in CWM once it boots? If so you can copy a TWRP 2.7.0.x zip file to your SD card and install it from there.

I'll keewp looking, but if you have a location I can get a flashable zip that will work for this, that'd be very helpful!
Thanks
Found a flash, flashed TWRP and got CM11 on it and working.
Thanks!
