Hey,
I'm new to Android, and still pretty bad with it, so when I set out to flash a custom rom last week, I never bothered to setup a backup. I didn't think it was going to be as complicated to get back to the way it was when I took it out of the box. I guess I'm still use to the iPhone. Now, I'm not completely happy with my phone and am looking to go back to stock.
I've looked in to it, and it seems easy enough, but I just have a couple of questions:
Pre-CM7 I'm pretty sure my phone was GRI54, and i9020, It's now GRI40. Does this make any difference?
And, finally, where can I download an official version of this?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

I've downloaded the i9020a one, but when I'm trying to update it it's saying "Installation aborted". I tried doing it from clockwork mod - and I don't know anything about it. Do you know where I'm going wrong here?

I haven't been able to find anything for this. The closest I found was someone saying 'use this one instead', but that got me stuck at the Google screen.

Sorry, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've tried using that zip a few times (286d814dee5b.signed-sojua-GRJ22-from-GRI54.286d814d.zip 12mb) and it says install failed.
I boot into recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, install zip from sd card, pick the file, agree.
Have you checked the MD5 hash to ensure the download isn't corrupt?

yes, the default for all stock 2.3.4 roms will restore the recover back to stock on each reboots you have to rename/delete the install-recover.sh script to prevent it from happening

Sorry? I have to delete the files to keep clockwork from being removed?
All I did was flash it, restart, and clockwork was still there.
Also, my phone's internet speeds seem really slow now. Could this be from now having a different build? (GRI54 -> GRJ22)
Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge. It's quite obvious I jumped into something that's much over my head.

A stock rom has the script. So flashing it will also restore stock recovery. If the rom you installed does not restore the recovery partition, the the rom was not completely stock.

I've never used it myself.
Looking over the zip file, the script has been renamed, so it's not 100% stock.
Normally you would need to root the phone to change the file name.
Perhaps renaming the file in the zip will correct the issue?
try renaming /etc/install-recovery.sh.bak to /etc/install-recovery.sh and re-apply the zip. ( no need to wipe )
That rom was posted by dsixda, he may be able to confirm what needs to be done.
If you had root, it would be fairly easy to rename it.

This doesn't seem to work. It does gets you back to stock rom but I still have the old modem I flashed, old APN, CWM Recovery and still there and factory reset doesn't works. Just hangs with the little Android guy and an exclamation mark.
Is there something like ODIN for Nexus S to go back to stock?

This should work:
http://android.grdlock.net/index.ph... S&PHPSESSID=9dc0c107b878587d1e0b21ec1e3130ef
This should bring you to stock 2.3.3 for the i9020a
Then apply the official patch:
http://android.clients.google.com/p...5b.signed-sojua-GRJ22-from-GRI54.286d814d.zip
This will then bring everything to stock 2.3.4 with proper baseband and recovery

No. It flashes back to stock DI07 and does not touch recovery. I believe this is to give you a clean slate before flashing ROMs or a quick fix for when somthing goes wrong flashing zips.
you still need to flash DG27 to DI07 so you can get the latest modem.bin..what does this mean??? do i have to do something after i flash this rom that is attached?

It means you have to already have the DI07 update installed first because it only flashes the system, not the modem/phone or data.
updated!!!
http://firon.net/xda/SPH-D700-modem.DI07.update-signed.zip
Here's a modem updater. You need clockwork to flash this. Rename to update.zip and copy it to the root of your sd card.
This will update your modem/baseband from DG27 to DI07.
It will not check your phone's version, but it will at least make sure using it you're on the right phone model.
It will NOT overwrite root, your kernel, or anything else. It only touches the modem.
any chance of the original epic Rom? the one that came with the phone prior to DI07? i used Oden to rever to stock and then applied the update (DI07) but Android Market is not working (i'm guessing corupt (g)Talk file).
Data Wipe + Clear Cache did not seem to help when in clockrecovery, the android market wont let me download anything
noob, would you mind posting a copy of the DG27 modem.bin file? Some of us are having issues with Bluetooth audio and I wanted to see if reverting the baseband would solve it.
Awesome, noobnl you rock. Now i'm gonna really start messin with this phone

Hello all I'am new hear & i'm sure this is a noob Q but if my phone is rooted & has DG27 on it can i use Clockworkmod to flash this stock.epic.DI18.rom.update.zip to update it?
The Older Build .zip file is busted i downloaded it two times & both times winrar says
Code:
! D:\net down\stock.epic.DI07.rom.update.build2.zip: Unexpected end of archive
Clockwork also said the file was no good
My question is can i update my phone from DG27 to DI18 with the first file in the OP? & then use "update-modemtoDI18.signed.zip(from post #14)" I was reading things about having to up date to DI07 before going to DI18 also if any one would be kind enough to point me to the right files & stuff to get my phone updated. I have been on this forum & a few others for about 4 hours now and i can't seem to find an answer

Yes.
you won't lose clockwork recovery but you might lose root.
if you lose root access, you simply need to re-root or flash a new kernel.
He just needs to flash a rooted kernel and that's it. Just in case.

I'm sorry but what is the MD5? And I have tried a few roms for nexus s. Latest one is BOFTAIN-NS-V1.
Btw, when I install a rom i get E:ERROR IN /SDCARD/MIUIDEV.....ZIP (STATUS 7)."INSTALLATION ABORTED" What does STATUS 7 MEAN?
MD5 has (or checksum) functions as a compact digital fingerprint of a file. The download file and on both ends should have the same number. As for the status 7 not sure. I have never had that issue. I do recall others in the past did. What recovery version do you have?
I tried another thread that said to download the stock 2.3 gingerbread.... and the file is a backup for the nandroid something something. I did just as the instructiond stated.
But when it tries to restore it says CAN'T MOUNT SYSTEM. and it stops right there.

But regardless, both should work the same.

No, you just flash stock ota updates that directly come from google. Just has to be renamed to update.zip and flashed through stock recover. And if that was a reference from the other thread then, no comment.

I just flashed it on my phone and it seemed to work fine, I was on 5.0.2.0 and still am ;-)
I uploaded and downloaded it and it's the same MD5 as the one on my phone that worked.
Just rename to PG58IMG.zip boot up from scratch (Power and Vol -), vol + to flash. When it wants to reboot after flashing pop the SD-card out and rename it after booting.
I came across this, it might be abit outdated but I'm guessing it'll work fine.

In the ARHD (mike's) thread there is a SuperWipe script in the downloads. Use that when changing between ROM flavours, or if recommended by the dev when changing versions. E.g., VI from 2.0.0 -> 3.0.0 required a SuperWipe.
MAKE sure you take regular Nandroid backups before/after you changing anything.

I might write a guide from a noobs perspective (for noobs) on what to do...

Oh right ok, well I've been advised to change my recovery to EXT4, which I'll do tomorrow. Nandroid backups, is that when I go into HBOOT and choose Recovery? That's a good idea. So when I do go to update my ROM to ARHD 6.xxx for ICS I'll use Superwipe to clear out my app etc... So by using recovery I'll keep my app data/saves etc?
Root fail
I do evrything but when i get to bootloader he starts to read fails from sd card and then says phrasing****** and then nothing. How to root
I just wanted to make sure that I understood the process of returning my phone to stock before I make a mistake.
All I've done since I purchased the phone was root it and unlock the bootloader. I have not loaded any custom roms.
So If I understand this correctly I need to:
1) Flash the Stock Image (which should include the stock recovery?)
2) Use fastboot to lock the bootloader
The reason I'm wanting to return the phone to stock is to receive OTA updates. I never use any apps requiring root, and don't plan on loading any custom roms.
I never did find a 2.3.4 stock image for the I9020A..
you should actually be able to get ota updates no problem. it'll just remove root every time you update.
it's probably not a good idea to lock the bootloader though cause if you ever want to unlock it again in the future you'll have to wipe everything from your phone. your best bet is to just flash stock recovery so you can install the update
i'm pretty sure that works, but hopefully someone else can verify just so you don't get some bad information lol
I heard the same thing about OTA updates. If you're phone is rooted and you're using the original rom, you'll get the update but you'll have to root your phone once again.
I haven't tried this myself so I cannot verify it.
It's just the word on the street, you know!

you need stock everything, so stock kernel, rom, radio, etc... the op should be fine to update if they flash stock recovery though. rooting is simple from there

Thanks kibmcz ! I'm a n00b when it comes to this but when you say flash via ClockworkMod you mean get into clockwork recovery mount the usb, transfer the zip onto the SD card and then <<Install from zip>> ?
Is that the method?

Thanks again kibmcz, so I just completed the flash, then did a fastbook oem lock.
Seems to be working fine except for one thing...
When I go into settings and hit Sound I get a Force close when I try and select a new ringtone...
Should I try reflashing again?

Didn't happen on mine (In fact im using a self rooted rom based on that exact stock zip) try doing a wipe in stock recovery.
after flashing that does it take it back to out of box condition?
reason i ask is because i bought a already rooted and unlocked one here from market place and i want to return it to stock firmware, radio, kernel and such to recieve OTA updates and what not.
your info is greatly appreciated

Using my zip yes... it flashes Bootloader, Radio, Boot, System and on first boot (and any other time recovery changes) Recovery is flashed. All you got to to is lock the bootloader and that wipes user data and usb storage.
hey man i appreciate you coming forward with a solution, ive yet to recieve the phone but wanted to prepare.
my goal is to flash everything back to stock and start completly over whereas i have no clue what method was originally used to root and unlock the bootloader.
when the time comes hope you dont mind a PM if i have any extra questions.

Just did the method using the stock ROM provided by kibmcz "thanks BTW!"
Phone is back to stock, working like it did when I first bought it. Had a little trouble with some Force Close issues but did a factory reset/data clear of the cache and all that before re-flashing, and it seems to be working Vanilla!
