Q & A Area - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I was looking around and I was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to have a Q&A area like the Nexus S and the Atrix 4G the have Q&A areas...
Again just a idea...

I've got a Q, maybe you can help me. I just ordered the SGS4G as part of T-Mobile's free promo they're running tonight. The Vibrant has 16gb internal memory. The SGS4G seems like an updated Vibrant. The agent told me the SGS4G has 16gb internal and a microSD slot. GSMArena and PhoneArena both say it only has 1gb. Did the sales rep assume incorrectly, or are those 2 websites not updated?

TMO's own website shows 1GB internal ROM. I've researched this ALOT. It appears to be only 1GB internal... they show: Internal memory: RAM: 512MB; ROM: 1024MB. The Vibrant has 16GB internal and came with a 2GB external SD installed. The SGS4G comes with 1GB internal ROM and a 16GB external SD chip. Both external SDs can be upgraded to 32GB..... Can you say MISSINFORMED???

And this sux since they reserve 250mb of that 1gb for ota updates...

Internal phone storage

Anyone else's Inspire only say 1GB instead of the 4GB it should be???
**From HTC**
Dear ************,
Congratulations on your new Inspire 4G!
The phone does have 4GB; however, the amount that is available to the user is approximately 1.5GB. Therefore, there is no error in the device.
We do apologize for any inconveniences that this may have caused, Chris.

I thought it was supposed to be 1gb internal plus the included card.
This is the specs from the HTC Website
Internal Memory 768MB/RAM 4GB/ROM
Mine phone storage says 0.94gb free. does that mean than that it is using 3gb already? Seems like alot.
Specs listed on the AT&T and HTC site say 4gb internal.

Mine was fresh out of the box and listed 1gb. I think we have a problem.

Could be pre OS memory. A 16gb iPhone has 14gb free out of the box. Android and Sense probably take up tons of space. Just an idea. It's like when you buy a computer with a 250gb hard drive and it has 225gb free after everything loaded on.

Even after the OS there should still be 3+ GB left.
just confirming the 1 gig issue and wondering wtf
I just sent an e-mail to HTC about the issue. Hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow.
"I just purchased the (AT&T) Inspire 4G and I am worried about the amount of internal storage available.
The tech specs on the product page list 4GB of internal storage (ROM). Right out of the box my new phone only listed 1GB available. Please advise if there is an error in the first run of shipments and how I would have the handset replaced.
Thank you"
I have just been reading up on a similar issue when the G2 was released.
Listed 4GB, only 2GB was showing available.
There was some speculation as to it being mixed up on the assembly line with the Desire Z which does not make sense since that phone was only offered with 1.5GB ROM, same as the DHD
I still cannot find the exact answer as to what the issue was.
I believe three of the 4 are system reserved, including a full restore function. If memory serves.

If 3GB are reserved, how does the DHD get away with only having 1.5 GB ROM??
Seems like it would be 1.5GB short.
I don't think the dhd has the restore function the inspire does.

New Galaxy S 4G no longer has 16GB SD

I received Galaxy S 4G from T mobile and It is has only 8GB SD card in it. The box says 8GB too. When did they change it? Samsung is so cheap.
I read the thread title and thought you were gonna say that you got a 32 gigger instead. Sad sad news.
Confirmed. That sucks too.

Wow..that sucks..i got mine like a month ago so i was able to get the 16gb
[sarcasm] Apparently it was changed sometime after I bought mine but before you bought yours. [/sarcasm]
Seriously, that sucks...but I dont think it is a make/break issue since the cards are cheap enough these days.
Blade
That sucks! I'm glad I got my phone just recently enough to get the card. If you're looking for more internal space, make sure to delete/move your FOTA files using root
Im getting 16GB off ebay for $20 and 8GB goes to my GF at least she's happy.
Yeah they sent out a memo about cards shipping with 8gb now.. prob to save money for att lol

Got mine two days ago, and it has a 16GB card. This is a rather odd thing from Samsung, or could it be T-Mobile?
Just got mine from costco. it has 16GB mini sd card.
They're to cheap to make a new box too. They just stick a piece of tape over the stuff about the 16gb card.

[Q] Normal to only have 9gb storage space?

I just picked up a Rogers One X and i notice that i only have 9 gigs on usable storage space..
is that normal? i thought i was supposed to get somewhere close to like 13gbs
It's normal, at&t is the same. They dedicate a about 4gb to apps.

I feel kind of lied to. If they would have expected said "9gb of storage" I would have really thought twice about the phpne

I had 16Gb internal en 16Gb external on my SII
Last week i had to delete a lot of stuff from my HOX because i could not make a backup through recovery
Also the amouth of RAM is loads lower then i had left on the SII which was always over 500M free , i'm happy if it doesn't drop below 200M on the HOX
I also feel lied to as it said 16Gb internal storage and 1Gb RAM which is also not true because it shows less then 700Mb total (672 MB ?) in task manager
Still its a great phone , but it could have been better with 32Gb storage and real 1Gb RAM
I'm kinda twitchy all the time because i have to keep a eye on storage and memory all the time....
sigh... an other one of these post.
Android optimizes it's ram fine, watching it actually causes more problems, and it has 1gb ram, a portion about 300mb is uses for camera, phone, graphics, and critical apps.

You weren't lied to. Storage is storage, and there is 16 GB of it. What they are saying is technically quite true. Yes, they could be a little clearer and say 9 GB of user accessible storage. But there is no lie here.
Every electronic device (including all smartphones) that has an operating system and other separate partitions (like apps), includes those in the storage total. Would you buy a laptop with a XX GB hard drive advertised, and expect the OS to not take any of the drive space? Of course not.

Keep the 16GB or return for the 32GB?

I have been torn about keeping the 16GB or getting the 32GB. I just don't know what to do. I have used a large amount of storage on the 16GB already and my 30 day return is up tomorrow. Any suggestions?
See the thread int eh android development section about Apps2SD that you can run without rooting or anythig. The author is TweakerL. Look it up.
Return for 32 imo. Unless your a pop the collar with your hat turned backwards kinda guy. Then keep the white.
I faced the same dilemma and decided to switch from 16gb to 32gb... If not it would have bothered me.
The only thing I miss is the White color...
I don't have the white one.

I have the 16 GB but I used this app to move my data folders to my 64GB microSD card. You can actually move any folders over, not just data folders.

I like the white color so this works out really well for me. This app effectively turned my White 16GB note into an 80GB note.

I don't view $50 as loads extra. Plus no matter how big your microsd card is you'll always have 16gb less with a 16 vs 32 model.

I went right for the 32 gb because id second guess like yourself . Plus my a500 is 16 gb and runs out fast. So 32 + 64 gives me 86 gb of storage

Availability of the 3G 32GB version is a problem too, at least in Europe. No 3G, no tablet for me personally.
I ordered (and have been using) the 16gb in white for 2-3 weeks, and just decided yesterday to order the 32gb in deep gray, instead. Although I try to store all of my media externally, I use up that space quickly. At the same time, I find it to be a PITA to swap things between internal and external, such as backups and ROMs. I don't mind paying $50 more for twice the memory, but I wouldn't have paid much more than that at all.
As for the color, while I like the white, I'm not fond of the silver/gray borders; I think it makes the device look kinda cheap, like a toy, though I do like that it resembles my Skyrocket. However, the border on the Skyrocket is not only a lot slimmer, it's chrome, which is much more appealing to me. I wish they had done something similar in this case.

All 64GB cards show as 59GB. It happens with all storage devices. That's to do with the fact that you're never going to get the full amount that you get told you will, because a portion of that memory is actually being used by the storage device for information pertaining to its self.

It shows as 59GB mainly because manufacturers give the storage sace in 1000s wile your tablet counts it in 1024s.
I looked at this for mine and decided to go for the 32 gb model since DRM protected movies cannot currently be moved to the SD card.
Google Play phone support guy advised that they have rec'd a lot of requests to enable this, so perhaps in the future it won't be an issue.

I'm the proud owner of a black 32gb Nexus 5. I call her "Black Betty". I needed more space since I have tons of pics, music and games. I had the 16gb Nexus 4 and it was barely cutting it. I was down to about 2-3gb once I loaded up all my data.

this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505934
three other threads about the same thing
This thread is pointless, nobody can tell you what YOUR needs are. Some people are fine with 16gb, and for others 32gb is not enough. Only you know what your usage is like.
I got the 32GB as 16 GB is Low for me. Secondly there is no expandable memory and hence I opted for the 32 GB.
Though I agree with _MetalHead_ that this is a pointless thread as you should know your requirements and if 32 GB is not available in your country, there is no point in talking about it. Though don't you think you could have bought it from ebay.com if you seriously needed 32GB.... a risk that you could have taken on Nexus 5
16 gigs with a otg cable and a 64gig sdcard = no troubles
Its obvious that OP wants some consoling because he can't get the 32gb version.
OP, you should buy your 16gb nexus 5 and use an otg cable to connect an SD card of whatever size you want to the phone.
