Cheap Extended Battery Performance - Potential Fix for Some - Galaxy S I9000 Accessories

Like many others I succumbed to the temptation to order super cheap extended batteries off of Ebay several months ago (I paid USD$23 for two batteries, covers and a wall charger).
After having issues on and off for a few months with one of them I noticed it rattled around a bit in the case so I shimmed some paper between the battery and the case to keep it from rattling. That stopped the rattling and random shutdown issues/low battery warnings for a few months.
Early last week it started to become a major problem again, multiple shutdowns a days, etc.. I opened the case and realized my paper shim had slid up into the speaker area of the case.
What I did was took several new sheets of paper, then folded them and laid them down between the bottom of the battery and the case to force a solid connection at the top of the battery with the connectors within the phone.
Absolutely zero problems since, battery life is prime again, no random shutdowns, charging issues or anything of the sort.
Just figured I would post this and a picture so that folks could see what my paper shim looks like and know that it may not be that your battery is bad, it may just fit improperly.

Mine's just the same, but I used a folded up post-it note. I bent it under the battery too, stays completely "stuck" then

same fix i used to do with a lot of my old nokia phones. hehe

Close Call Today

I dropped my Arrive onto a tile floor. As it slipped out of my hand a quick thought shot through my mind - should have bought the insurance. As pieces went everywhere I reached down to asses the damage.
The pieces were just the battery cover and batter. Since the keyboard was not out during the drop, I was surprised to see the battery cover come off, since I thought it impossible without extending the keyboard.
After putting everything back together and turning on the phone, all was well. Not a scratch or scuff to be found.
Whew!
That's one tough little bugger

Yeah I've dropped mine twice now (!) which are the only two times I've dropped any of my phones in the last 10 years. I think the aluminum battery cover makes the phone very slippery to hold relative to other phones, and opening the keyboard requires enough force that sometimes the little bugger just gets away from me. I'm contemplating a skinomi carbon-fiber body skin to give it more grip, but I hate doing things like that. My only concession has been a screen protector (which I also never use). I think I just need to be more careful.

That's how I saw my battery for the first time. Dropped it the second day I had it. Decided not to get a screen protector because the screen looked too nice. Face down and not a nick or scratch. Agree, this is one tough phone.
Dont know how you guys avoid scratches on your screens. My screen protector is covered in them! But then again... its probably is more sensitive than the screen.
To access the battery, we need to slide out the keyboard so the part that holds the screen up, uncovers the notch to take the cover off. Obviously it doesnt actually hold the cover in place. Must be purely an aesthetics thing.
Nice to hear they can take a beating though
Just had my close call today a little while ago; it was a two foot drop from my hand in a chair to the tile ground with it landing right on its face. Still a bit paranoid but looks like everything is fine on the exterior, but the cover flew off too. Right now trying to do everything I can think of to make sure the internal components are still in working order, particularly the mic and speakers.

Frankly, the most fragile part (as far as impact damage goes) is the screen/casing. So if cosmetically it looks fine, it probably is fine.
Didnt you just see it going in slow motion the whole time? lol Glad you faired well.
I tossed mine off the desk (accidentally -- swept my arm while talking, caught the cord, phone came unplugged)
The slow-mo with the long too-deep-to-be me "nooooooooooooo" followed by the beautifully artsy smash into the wall. Battery cover and battery left their normal homes.
Reassembled, everything's fine. It's like the first scratch in a new car. Sucks, but it'll happen.

Observation: Wireless Charging Heat Generation

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to post up something I have noticed. I have the Nexus 4 I also have the OEM wireless charger. At the time of the observations I also had the Skinomi TechSkin front and back cover installed.
In regards to wireless charging it is known to generate extra heat, its a downfall of the process. The Nexus 4 design with its glass and metal build is good at handling this.
I have charged my Nexus 4 on wireless many times and at first while I still had the Skinomi installed I noticed the phone was retaining heat, this freaked me out. My last phone was a Nexus S and heat was the downfall of that unit, if it heated up to many times it broke down components like the power button.
So why was my phone retaining heat? Well I narrowed it down to the protective skin. It is my assumption that there was particular design considerations in the development of the Nexus 4. The Glass/Metal body was put into place to help with the radiating of the heat away from the body over the whole of the surface. When the protective skin is placed this process is hindered.
I removed the protection and then attempted another charge. Heat did build up as before but the phone became cooler quicker.
My conclusion to this is the use of applied protective skins may cause future heat damage to the phone.
This is only my observation though. I would really like to hear from others on this matter.
My nexus does indeed hold more heat for longer with a nilkin case on it while charging wirelessly.

3rd-party battery bulge

I've read quite a few threads/reviews about 3rd-party batteries causing the battery cover to bulge. I've got such a 3rd-party battery and I can see the bulge. But the battery cover bulge isn't a big deal to me. The big deal to me is that my 3rd-party batteries actually cause the screen to bulge.
I never noticed it until I realized it was actually bulging. With the screen off, reflections aren't "mirror-like" as you would expect with a flat piece of glass. Instead there is a slight distortion. And then looking down the edge of the screen held at eye-level, the middle of the screen is noticably raised from the exterior chrome casing (which it should normally be flush with [which it still is at the top and bottom of the phone.])
Surely a bulging Super AMOLED screen should be more of a concern than a bulging flimsy plastic case. But I haven't seen or read any thread/reviews about batteries causing a bulging screen. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Is the battery itself bulging? If it is, I'd take that thing out right away. Stop using it and dispose of it. Bulging in a battery means that something wrong has happened.

That could very possibly be the case. I wouldn’t say it’s bulging, per se; more like swelling. I know bulging batteries aren’t safe, but I just figured with all the reviews/threads about bulging battery covers, that this was “acceptable swelling” (whatever that may be. Ha!) Also, I figured it was “acceptable swelling” because it’s not just one battery I have; I had five (5) Anker batteries and all five have exhibited this swelling. But I already threw away two of them a few weeks ago because the swelling was getting to the point of “bulging.” The remaining three (3) batteries seemed to be within [my perceived] “acceptable swelling” range.
To get an idea of what my batteries are like, read this thread (it’s not about Anker batteries for the GS4, but they are Anker batteries, nonetheless.) Just search the thread for “swell”
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297345
I’ve decided to not use these particular batteries anymore. I’ve already contacted Anker about the issue (here’s to hoping that my batteries were from a 1st-run batch of lemons.) The batteries came with an 18-month warranty; I’ll be sure to report back on the replacements.

If anything, this thread can now serve to help others in regards to not only a bulging battery cover, but a bulging screen and bulging/swelling batteries.
Thanks.

I wouldn't say any degree of swelling is acceptable if it involves the actually battery itself. Don't want to risk that kind of stuff with my phone haha.
That's why only [email protected]#$ with oem accessories except for cases and screen protectors!
Sent from my Ssamsung Galaxy s4
Got the replacement batteries. The batteries lie flat and aren't swollen. They fit nicely into the phone. But per the general observation with various 3rd-party batteries being slightly thicker than OEM batteries, there is a slight bulge on the back cover. As for the screen, although the reflections now look "mirror-like" compared to what I was seeing with the swelling batteries, there is still an ever-so-slight, almost-unnoticable-but-I-know-what-to-look-for-so-I-know-it's-there bulge.
Looks like I'll be sticking to OEM batteries.
Seriously, I'm surprised I haven't seen other reviews/comments about screens bulging due to thicker [even non-swelling] 3rd-party batteries (I guess this thread can serve that purpose for others.)

[Q] loose ill fitting back cover should i be worried?

Ive had my note pro for 2 months now and i can't return it given the niche nature of this product sourcing parts will be difficult. My back cover i think does not fit perfect over the device this ratting sound which appeared last week out of the blue i have pinpointed it to being the insides being flexed and mov3d slightly causing the back cover to not fit properly,
Clearly this is a hardware issue should i be concerned?
Im worried that the insides will push more and more outward causing either screen flickering issues from a loose cable or the battery connector may get loose. Is the only solution other than taking it to samsung for repair to put a snug case over it thst clips in so that it's held in place?
It is a bit disconcerting when i press on the back it flexes in a bit before i can feel the battery etc
does anyonr else have a loose back cover that doesn't fit flush against the insides?
Crap im starting to think the ill fitting cover might be due to battery swell. Has anyone had a swelling battery in their note pro?
I can't believe i could be that unlucky to get that. I look after my battery i use a fan whrn i charge and it never heats up or overheats so nothing indicates a swelling battery byt when i feel the back it doesn't feel smooth on that side.
No need for multiple threads, you are posting about same problem here: [Q] Tapping on upper middle of screen makes rattle vibrate sound like something loose
Can some8ne give mr an answer at least as to what it might be?

Back glass panel question

So where I live it's been getting very hot weather wise. I've had the phone in a toughcase for almost a year, the phones 2 years old and pristine.
Few days ago thought I'd take it out the case and give it a clean, took it out the case today and one side has started to come up, it looks as though the adhesive is coming off due to the high heat.
Has anyone experienced this? And if so what did you do? The phone is out of warranty so can't get ir repaired by Sammy. I'm fairly proficient when it comes to repairs and what not.
I can obviously replace the whole thing as a long term solution, but is there anything I can do in the mean time?
Thanks in advance.
I would guess that the battery has degraded over time and giving excess heat and expanded a little. I would suggest to replace it (maybe with S7 Edge battery).

The battery is fine as I've looked at it and normally with battery swelling the battery life is dreadful but I'm still getting 17 hours use with 3-4 hours sot. The back panel fits on fine it's just the adhesive one side, I've checked battery health too and it's good.
You can buy the adhesive from various places and google will take you to various guides on removing the back cover, you need to heat it up enough to loosen the glue.
