I've been testing alot of methods on how to get our GPS to lock fast. I found a method that I've tested on about 7 rom's and it works to perfection everytime. Follow these instructions and youll lock on in under a minute everytime. First thing you have to do is download a app called gpsfix from the market. Here's a step by step on how it works for me...
1. Turn on GPS
2. Open GPS fix
3. Hit start and let it find your location before exiting out.
4. Open maps and type in directions
5. Hit the navigation sign on upper right
This should activate the navigation almost instantly, it does for me. Hopefully it works for alot of you since our GPS on this phone is a little quirky. Don't forget to hit the thanks button if you find this tip useful
It works!
Would i have to do this every time i load up my navigation?
*edit* I notice when i turned off my wifi, my location moved about a whole block off my actual location.
Sweet! Thanx.

Thanks for the tip but i've honestly never had a problem with the GPS on my phone, it's always almost instant for me to be picked up.
Worked for me. Thanks
my GPS locks on in less than 10 seconds using Orange sense ROM, inside my apartment. Without using this trick, could it be a ROM/Kernal issue?

Yeah...I wish I had the same luck as you but it would vary from rom to rom. Atleast know I know whichever rom I'm on....ill get a quick lock
Whoa...I thought my GPS locked on fairly quickly, but now seems to be locking on considerably faster. Especially noticeable in car/bus/train! Thank u for sharing.

Hi
This is an Auto Screen Locker program which rely on Proximity Sensor.
you guys may love it.
>>old version!View attachment PoxLocker2.7.apk<<
>>newer version in the second page!:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11772475&postcount=19
This program can prevent pressing buttons when you put your cell phone in the pocket
Note:What if
Can't unlock?
restart your phone or give your phone a call.
Can't uninstall?
You have to stop this program by uncheck the first checkbox("Use sensor depended locker") before uninstall this program.
in newer version, you can uninstall the program from the menu of this program!
Not working?
Make sure your phone's system is Froyo or above.
if you restart your cell phone, please run the program again.
I upload a clip about how to use this screen lock on youtube
Any feedbacks?
thanks for tha app
Just testing now... seems to work fine and doesn't lock the screen when on a call which was the only thing I was concerned about...
Only thing left to test is battery life..
Good app..

It is programed not to lock screen when a call is incoming, otherwise it will lock the screen and you will miss that call.
But , anyway, your idea maybe useful to prevent using cell phones when driving.
So,if you still think that lock the screen when a call is incoming is necessary, I can add a check box for that function.

I think you misunderstand me... what I meant was that I was worried that this app would lock the screen when I am on a call which would be inconvenient...
I am happy that it does not do this and was just commenting on this in case anyone else was wondering this...
Great app, no changes necessary as far as I can see..

I just noticed something...
After a restart the background service does not start automatically for me...I have to go into the app and then the service starts... dunno if that is just me..

... also is there any way that you can make the sensitivity even less? I've got the sensitivity slider all the way to the right but I still find it a little too sensitive..

I've just noticed that you mentioned in your post that the app needs to be run again after a restart so ignore my previous comment about that issue..

Sorry for that, I actually didn't add auto-start feature to this program. I will add it in next version.
It's not a big deal really...
Loving the app by the way

Brilliant app, this is just what I've been looking for!
I think every phone should come with something like this, and if battery wasn't such a concern with smart phones, it'd be awesome to have the reverse work too, and the phone turn on when nothing is sensed.
I've only been using for a little while, I'll let you know how it affects my battery after a few days.
Edit: I thought it wasn't locking the keys, but that was another program I started using together with it - No Lock

PoxLocker3.apk is the newer version.
in the newer version
you can set the program auto start
you can select lock delay time (how long you block the sensor)
you can select third party screen lockers
in the menu:
you can setup a white list(when the program selected in the list is running, sensor lock will not working, but the onekeylock still works)
you can easly uninstall the software
OneKeyLock.apk is a program which can call the service of PoxLocker to directly lock screen
Just tried your app. It's really great and works wonders. I do, however, find it to be too sensitive even when I set it at the least sensitive level. Maybe you could change it to be even less sensitive or make the sensor detect an object at an even closer distance if possible. Pox Locker paired with No Lock is truly a godsend.
poxlocker3 still gives me massive partial wake lock..no wonder my batt has been draining like nobody's business.. even though i ticked the 'turn off sensor after lock' option..
I've uninstalled it...
So, after installing the GB Leak, I noticed that GPS was hosed. I was able to resolve this and get locks again by following the steps below. (This has also been confirmed by Atantian that it fixes GPS when going from the GB leak back down to 2.2.2)
dial 1809#*999#
Scroll down to GPS Test
Check Use Extended Conf File (this will be for gps.conf in /data/gps which I will include with the Bionix 2 release)
Click System Settings
Check Use XTRAS
Click SUPL Setting
Click SLP Server Setting
Here, you can test for best results. I am using the Spirent server
Hit back x3
Click Get Position
Hit Menu
Click Settings
Session Type> Single Fix
Oper Mode > MS-Based
Hit Back
Go outside in a clear view
Hit Menu
Hit Start.
Let it do its thing for 10-15...
You should be good to go.
Again, for SLP server, test each one out.
Once done, you can grab GPS Test from the market and should have instant locks.
Thanks Again,
Followed the instructions worked perfect.
I went from Stock > CM7 > Stock and my GPS would take forever to lock once back on my stock ROM.
I found Spirent option to be the best and insta locked 5 Satallites. (Checked via gps check application)
Confirmed 2.3GB to 2.2 Froyo works to fix GPS
Thanks Again!
TW / Krylon you are appreciated
Works on cm7?
Yes, it should. I went from stock to CM7 and the Gingerbread messed my GPS up. I went back to stock and the GPS was still messed up. I then followed Krylons instructions and it fixed the issue.
If you are on CM7 - try it and tell us if it works. - you can always do it again and go back to Tmobile Sats if it doesnt work.
I tested the 2.3CM7 > 2.2stock I volunteer you for the CM7 Test lol =p

Mine didn't work with the Spirent server after 15 minutes, now I am trying the T-mobile server.
EDIT: Didn't work with T-mobile server... Now I will try the last one...
EDIT 2: No server worked for me. I wonder what I am doing wrong. I am on the GB leak rom. When I press menu+start and let it sit for 15 minutes outside on a balcony, I come back to it and everything is still solid 0's and google maps still won't lock a signal...
EDIT 3: I think you missed a step. Before selecting "Get position" I selected Apply for Setting Values and things look like they are working in the test.
EDIT 4: I still can't get an accurate fix. The closest I have got is 96m. I get anywhere between that and 12,000m.
My GPS has been totally hosed since trying the GB leak and reverting back to 2.2.2, so I will give this a try! Thanks.
How long should it be saying "ussd code running" before it comes up with the other screens? Waited 5 minutes and did a battery pull

It shouldn't. Its not a ussd code. You're entering it wrong.

This is giving me improved accuracy; however, when I attempt to get driving navigation from google maps, it stalls on "searching for gps" and can never get an accurate enough lock to function.
Again, I went from stock to GB leak and am still on GB leak.
EDIT: I changed the Session Type to Tracking instead of Single fix and now it locks 10+ satellites instead of 3. I will take this on a navigation run and report back.

When I enter the code itself, nothing happens. If I hit the send key, it then pulls up the USSD message. For what it's worth though, the CheckIn code still works no problem

Didn't freeze anything. However, I cannot seem to find the lge.hiddenmenu on my phone. I would presume it to be in /system/app?
EDIT:
Did a full search with Root Explorer and couldn't find it. Could you send the APK to me at [email protected] along with the correct folder it should be in? TIA
This deff works! In one try..instant lock
Confirmed not working on gb leak.
The phone will find and utilize gps just fine.
However, you restart the phone, you have to perform the test over again

lock is only half the equation.
Getting an accurate enough lock to use google navigation is the tough part. Well, that and getting it to lock that accurate again after a restart.
I tried I keep getting ussd code im on cm7
T mobile us, rooted unlocked, never put custom Rom on it. I used to be able to tether even when screen shut off, now once the screen shuts off the data stops until I turn the screen back on. Any ideas how to fix this besides leaving screen on?

Bummer.
This actually had me thinking, since google play music is running before the screen shuts off and it constantly draws data, maybe thats why it stays active even when the screen is off. So I am going to have to test this theory by loading a huge webpage on the tethered device to see if you need a constant demand for data for tethering to keep working, I suppose I could just a youtube video.
Edit: My theory panned out and may lead to a fix. This is what I did
1) Turn on FoxFi an make sure screen doesn't time out 2} Tether my Asus Infinity to it making sure the phone screen doesn't time out 3) Start a long youtube video using the youtube app, I tried a 7 minute one. 4) Turn screen off on the phone and I was able to watch the whole video while tethered to my one s
My conclusion is if there is a constant data draw the tether will keep working even when screen is off. So they have enabled a rapid cutoff of wifi if your screen shuts off with no data draw, if there is a draw the data will keep flowing.
Test it out for yourself and share your results, off to try netflix.
Edit 2: Further testing confirms this on my device, This time I used netflix streamed dark of the moon and it continued to allow the tether to work. I dont want to burn my months data out testing this so we need a few more people to try this.
I have the EU rom but I'm experiencing the same issue.
I'm using Airdroid and it stops responding as soon as the screen shuts off. I can confirm that Ready2Mosh is right, since if I turn on the web radio and then shut off the screen Airdroid works flawlessly.
I have never noticed this before 4.0.4 so I'd guess the bug wasn't there. This is a major bug that has to be fixed soon by HTC.
What about 3g connection? Does it shut off too?
Does it do it if you just use the built in tethering app?
I don't think it is really a bug with android per se vs design
that is sleeping the app as backgrounded since screen is off and not being over riden anymore.
You're right. Tethering isn't put to sleep for me.
I can confirm the issue with airdroid and other apps though. I'm going to open a new thread in order not to hijack this one.
I tried airdroid and that works fine for me though.

Are you using a different ROM other than stock? Are you outside or by a window? Did you try another app? Need a bit more details please.
Try the Play Store app GPS Status & Toolbox. Install and open the app. On the app's main screen, you will seen on the circular display, "dots" for any satellites that the phone can track. Below the circular display is a bar graph, with each bar depicting the signal strength for each satellite (should turn green when locked). Let the app do its thing for at least 5 minutes and see if any satellites are being tracked, and how good the signal strength is.
Also, its not clear from the OP:
1) Are you trying to get the GPS to lock on outside? This is the best condition (especially for a first time lock), with a clear view of a majority of the sky. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes.
2) Did it ever work, and now it stopped working?
3) Any recent change, like RUU, or flashed a new radio?
I was outside when I tried to find my location, and I've only tried with google maps. I downloaded the GPS status app and after running, all it says is it can't find my location. I also didn't have any network Internet after unlocking the phone, but I changed the APN settings to be compatible with tmobile if that helps any with this problem.
Try turning update through network and WiFi off. See if it will locate then turn it back on.

Any dots on the circular display of the app, or any bars appearing on the bar graph?
If the GPS is working at all, it should at least be able to track some satellites, even if its not strong enough signal to get a location lock.
If nothing at all, it suggests a hardware issue, or the OS not being able to communicate with the GPS for some reason.
Also, I asked before but didn't get an answer: has it ever worked before, and just stopped working? Or never worked, newly purchased phone, etc.
There was one green circle but no bar graph below. And it hasn't worked since I've had the phone. I purchased it from a friend who upgraded and didn't need the phone.
also have the same issue, my gps doesnt lock to sattallites at all.
Its unlocked and on ARHD 21.0. Sometimes it finds one sattallite (no lock though) so i'm guesing that actual gps hardware isn't dead.

I'm on RLS14 and my GPS is so wonky that I can't use it. If I change it in the status bar toggles (both stock and toggle mods) it will sometimes turn off or on, but I only know because my battery starts draining. Then it's nigh on impossible to get it off again, so I've got unused GPS for sometimes a couple days. And Location Services is no help either, the check marks check and dissappear with a mind of their own. So if anyone has a solution, that would much appreciated (I've already tried wiping cache/dalvik and fixing permissions, and followed all instruction to install)
