Need help with tethering since new update. - HTC One S

T mobile us, rooted unlocked, never put custom Rom on it. I used to be able to tether even when screen shut off, now once the screen shuts off the data stops until I turn the screen back on. Any ideas how to fix this besides leaving screen on?

Bummer.

This actually had me thinking, since google play music is running before the screen shuts off and it constantly draws data, maybe thats why it stays active even when the screen is off. So I am going to have to test this theory by loading a huge webpage on the tethered device to see if you need a constant demand for data for tethering to keep working, I suppose I could just a youtube video.
Edit: My theory panned out and may lead to a fix. This is what I did
1) Turn on FoxFi an make sure screen doesn't time out 2} Tether my Asus Infinity to it making sure the phone screen doesn't time out 3) Start a long youtube video using the youtube app, I tried a 7 minute one. 4) Turn screen off on the phone and I was able to watch the whole video while tethered to my one s
My conclusion is if there is a constant data draw the tether will keep working even when screen is off. So they have enabled a rapid cutoff of wifi if your screen shuts off with no data draw, if there is a draw the data will keep flowing.
Test it out for yourself and share your results, off to try netflix.
Edit 2: Further testing confirms this on my device, This time I used netflix streamed dark of the moon and it continued to allow the tether to work. I dont want to burn my months data out testing this so we need a few more people to try this.

I have the EU rom but I'm experiencing the same issue.
I'm using Airdroid and it stops responding as soon as the screen shuts off. I can confirm that Ready2Mosh is right, since if I turn on the web radio and then shut off the screen Airdroid works flawlessly.
I have never noticed this before 4.0.4 so I'd guess the bug wasn't there. This is a major bug that has to be fixed soon by HTC.
What about 3g connection? Does it shut off too?

Does it do it if you just use the built in tethering app?
I don't think it is really a bug with android per se vs design
that is sleeping the app as backgrounded since screen is off and not being over riden anymore.

You're right. Tethering isn't put to sleep for me.
I can confirm the issue with airdroid and other apps though. I'm going to open a new thread in order not to hijack this one.

I tried airdroid and that works fine for me though.

Display turning on by itself for no reason

Does it happens to others that the D2G turns the display on by itself for no reason? This happens to my D2G all the time and for no apparent reason. What can be the real reason or is it just a bug on android 2.2 or a hardware issue?
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
Do you receiving text messages correlate with your screen turning on?
I DO have the same 'problem' with my desire hd. Every once and a wile the screen turns on by it Self with no reason. Dont know why this is, there is no message comming in or anything else, it just turns on. I know my touch HD had the same thing every night at 2359 hours. Weird stuff these phones;-)
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I believe this happens when you tick the "in pocket detection" option under settings>display. It supposedly turns off the screen and locks the phone automatically when its in your pocket.
Try turning that option off and let me know how that goes.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
In pocket detection is not checked on my D2G and it does this sometimes, I rarely notice it, but once in a while when it hasn't been touched and is just sitting next to me on the couch and never got a txt message or sort of notification or update it will turn the screen on. It is so rare that I think nothing of it really, but it is definitely weird.
Well, it is not weird, it seems it is a bug on Froyo. It happens all the time and it has nothing to do with text messages coming in. I am not sure about the in pocket detection. It happens while laying over a table by itself. These are the things that make me think Android is still experimental, kind a like windows mobile always was.

Maybe it happens when the phone looses connection with the network.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
I noticed my D2G doing this sometimes. Turns out it was crashing and doing a short reboot (just android logo for a few seconds and right to lock screen, not a full reboot with the M logo etc.)
Same here with HTC Desire. Looking for a solution. This is really annoying!
I am beginning to think that when i cancel data and it only works on 2G, it doesnt turn the display on by itself. Maybe it has to do with the phone working on GSM instead of CDMA, which is my case.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
I am almost sure display comes on thanks to an application you have installed. If you have time to waste - start fresh (factory reset) and check if phone does it again with no extra apps loaded.
I suspect that the cause of the display turning on is the window that pops up everytime I loose connection with the network asking if I want to switch to Global mode since there are no GSM/UMTS networks available...

Finally I found The Reason
Some installed apps works without permission ,,,, so the screen turns on every short time<<<,
For example the reson of turning on the display on my phone < that i have installed a livewallpaper ""morph.galaxytt.apk or Morphing Galaxy LiveWallpaper" so this livewallpaper ""even if i not using it "" will work on services causind the screen turns on
so you have to go to "setting/Applications/Running Srvices" and stop the apps thats working without permission
Note that i have been forced to uninstall morph.galaxytt.apk after that my phone screen stays off <<<<
Press Thank button if you benefit from this Reply &&& sorry for my bad english

[Q] screen wont timeout

I have a rooted thunderbolt (thanks for all who made that possible). in the last couple of days I have noticed that the screen does not timeout. I don't know if it is a rouge app, or some other problem. I have done some searching and it appears that I am not the only one with this problem, but I have not seen a solution to the problem yet.
After a reboot it does appear to work correctly for a time though. If it is an app how would I find out which one is doing it? As a side question. If I do a hard reboot will I lose root?

Yeah, I get this too.
Do you guys run Titanium? My screen wouldn't turn off this morning, and now that I'm paying more attention, I noticed Titanium ran an auto-backup last night on the charger. That might just be a coincidence, but something to look out for.

Well the spare parts thing did not work...
Any other ideas?
The only time I had this happen was when I bumped the volume buttons as I was setting the phone down. Somehow the volume indicator on the screen got stuck or something and the screen never shut off. I just started being more careful not to bump the volume, or actually pressing the power button to shut the screen off. Idk if this is your issue or not, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Change the setting to disable "partial wake locks" (in TB) and it will go back to sleep.
pandora radio also has a toggle to keep the screen on while its in use.

[APP][2.2+]NotifyWake (save power buttons)

Well everything about the android is good and getting better, but weve seem to have neglected the physical hardware. namely the power button.
This application will wake the phone for 10 seconds when any notification(theoretically) is received. this includes changes to existing notifications too. this will reduce the need for using the physical power button to turn the phone back on, this is very usefull for IM apps, email, or things that require short reaction timespans(for many people SMS)
In combination with the notification power widget(or another app that can turn off the screen) you can reduce the use of the button and preserve its lifespan.
This app leverages the accessibility api of android to detect when notifications are changed, and accessibility must be enabled by the user.
installation: install like you would normally(from attachment) and then go to settings > accessibility options > NotifyWake
it will run only when its been selected from the accessibilty.
P.S.: feel free to let me know of any ideas or problems with it.
[update]
added in timeout options and some other experimental features, havnent had much time to add stuff but what i wrote a long time ago
[update 2]
added in whitelist/blacklist filter options, got rid of the osd notify(it isnt finished nor intended to be a part of this app) remember, enable in accessories
[update 3 may/29/2012]
-fixed bug where if filter is disabled, it doesnt function.
+added api 15 compatibility for appearance(functionality remains unaffected so far)
+added fastscroll/thumbscroll on filter activity
*attempted to make seekbar item match default items themes, if anyone can help would be nice

I tested this on my Optimus Chic and it works great, although i only tested it with SMS.

Juice Defender actually uses more juice than its saves. By default wifi gets turned off when the device goes so sleep. All that stays awake is you mobile data, unless and app keeps the wifi on. Most android devices have a very good battery life, requiring you to charge at most once a day unless the device is being taxed by constant use. I suggest you charge when you go to sleep and get rid of Juice Defender. This app works perfectly and I get my happy 12-18 waking hours on my device, unless playing games. On my other android device which i use only for calls, 2 days without charge and no battery profile managers

curious what internet has to do with this app. im not familiar with juice defender. only cases that i i think it wouldnt work well would be when an app sends a notify because the phone sleeps. in which case i would find a different app...

(Q) Screen Lock App/Widget

Can anyone recommend and good screen lock/off app? I want something that I can press on my homescreen instead of having to press the power button when im driving. I used Screen Lock and Off on my nexus but supposedly it's not compatible with the s3. All the others Ive tried either have delays or some unnecessary animations etc. Im looking for something nice and simple. Thanks

I've used Invisible Lock Widget in the past, but it seems like you have to hit it twice on the S3 to get it to work.
I use something simply called "lock screen widget" available in the market. Works perfectly.
Thanks I will give these a try.

Screen Lock and Off works perfectly fine on my S3 (as well as my wife's). Initially, it would either flicker first then turn off, or the screen would go blank for 2 seconds or so then turn back on. I solved this by going into settings and checking the "Delay Device Locking" option. It says, "If the screen turns off and comes back on immediately or you want to use screen off animiations, then you can use this option." The apps now works great.

Ok found the Screen Off and Lock apk at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577380
The screen comes back on for a second after pressing, but then shuts off (with the delay option enable) which I guess is better than nothing. The others mention in this thread don't keep the screen off, but thanks for all your help anyway.
If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Known bugs that HTC must fix

I think it could be useful to compile a list of known bugs, so that we users can have a look and solve (if possible) them and HTC hopefully can bare in mind what still affects this otherwise great phone.
I'm on the EU rom, so I'm listing the bugs of the INTERNATIONAL EUROPEAN One S STOCK ROM (Firmware 2.35, Android 4.0.4, radio 1.06es). If someone is interested in listing the american version's or other version's bugs let me know and I can write down everything in this first post.
KNOWN BUGS:
1) email ringing twice: when you receive an email (just 1 email), the phone sometimes rings twice (one ring and immediately another in 1-2 seconds).
2) hung in standby: if you put the phone in standby for a long time (i.e. at night), when you try to disable standby mode the mobile network is marked as "activating..." in the menu, and actually never activates. You have to reboot in order to get network connectivity (not only data connectivity, but also the ability to make/receive a phone call) back.
3) wifi hung when screen off: wifi keeps connected to the wifi network (if wifi setting "always on" is selected), but data isn't actually transferred when the screen turns off. As a result, the app that relies on wifi (for example, Airdroid) stops responding with screen off, and instead immediately responds if you turn the screen back on (even not unlocking the screen: it's enough that it's on).
4) continuously switching between 3g and hsdpa: when trying to use the mobile connectivity (e.g. loading a web page), the phone sometimes starts switching between 3g and HSDPA and viceversa at 2-3 seconds intervals. In the meanwhile data transfer (download/upload) completely stops (e.g. the web page loading doesn't proceed). Possibly related to fast dormancy. Bug that used to affect other HTC phones in the past and that HTC solved for those with a software update.
5) htc sense keyboard's arrows showing up even if disabled (thanks to users s10shane and greeneyes513)
AND THEIR WORKAROUNDS:
1) none
2) if you enable/disable standby mode by long pressing the power button, instead of from the settings menu, it works.
3) the bug doesn't happen if there is a constant flow of data: e.g. if you put in download a quite huge file and in the meanwhile you turn off the screen, all works (not only the download but also other apps like Airdroid) until the download finishes. Other method: enable "better wifi performance" in settings menu (but this drains the battery a lot). Third method: manually activate a wake lock via third party app such as Android Terminal Emulator (don't know about battery drain but I think likely there is).
4) maybe disabling fast dormancy but this requires root access, so this can't be considered a workaround for most.
5) sometimes can get rid of the arrows by putting the phone in landscape mode, then turning the phone back to portrait mode.
What am I forgetting?
I don't have any of those so called "known issues".
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda app-developers app
besides 1, the others are present with my device
Yes, the first one is also already known. For example here (that guy mentions it as number 2).
i have an issues with the htc sense keyboard on 4.0.4. i noticed when i turn off the arrows in the keyboard settings, sometimes they show back up on the keyboard even though they are turned off (also it only turns them off in portrait mode). sometimes i can get rid of them by putting the phone in landscape then turning the phone back to portrait mode. lol its annoying as hell
The wifi bug bothers me a lot since I use a texting app and facebook messenger and my wifi ends up turning off after standby for like 5 mins

A few bugs I found... Are these already known?
Often when opening the sms app, the sort menu will open by itself.
The phone reports available open wifi networks, even though I turned that feature off.
Notification about open wifi networks
I can confirm this bug. Although I have turned the notification for open networks off, it shows up in the notification area whenever I have wifi turned on and am not connected to a wifi network. That's probably not the expected behavior, so it's a (minor) bug.
I read that this may be due to not doing a factory reset after installing the lates OTA update.
I just bought the phone and installed everything, so I can't be bothered with a reset for this small inconvenience. But when/if Jelly Bean arrives, I will do a reset after installing, and see if that fixes the issues.

Not for me it doesn't. In fact I'm not sure I understand the workaround anyway! I mean, how else am I supposed to enable/disable standby mode? I only ever long-press the power button to put it in standby mode.
Mine is totally stock, supplied unlocked from Clove and about one in every four wake-from-standby, I have no data or mobile network connection unless I carry out a full restart. I thought it was me, the fact that I occasionally use it without data, or swap between PAYG and Pay Monthly (o2) sim cards, but I've just popped in another (True Mobile) PAYG sim and that's the same.
No such problems with my HTC One X+; possibly the best phone I ever bought. That's not supposed to sound conceited. In fact, quite the opposite.
