To previous epic owners, question about battery life and charging. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Very simple. I've read the tmo ns takes a long time to charge but the battery lasts okay. The epic takes a while of undisturbed charging to fill up the battery. Epic's battery life is so so IMO.
What are your thoughts? The reason I have been asking so many questions about these two phones is I'm giving it some thought about maybe getting one. One thing I would like to hold out for is the seidio (sp) extended battery and cover. I have also read that the aftermarket batteries are good in the beginning but get worse (than stock do with age) rather quickly. I've got a 3300 coming in the mail so I'm excited to see how good it is.

I can't comment on stock but with cm7 rc4 I got 18 hours yesterday before the 15% remaining warning popped up and I plugged it in. My usage is a few phone calls between 300-500 texts heavy internet browsing and some gaming among a few other things. Been unplugged for 8 hours and I'm on 59% right now.

And charging I honestly don't know because I charge during the night. However the other night I plugged it in with 4% left and slept for 4-5 hours and it was fully charged.

I owned the Epic 4g when it first came out...battery life was about 1 percent per minute with the screen on. My Nexus S battery with CM7 and og kernel lasts about 3 times longer than the Epic 4g.

Another battery life thread...

Is there any way to get this thing to last over 10 hours with moderate/medium usage? I mean I hate to compare, but I was able to use my iphone 4 hard periodically through the day and be at 40% around midnight, but I have to stay using my captivate very lightly after about 10pm, and I usually unplug around 12 to 1pm..
I don't want to have to sacrifice majors perks of why I switched to android just to get a full day out of it. I've tried a lot of the suggestions I'm the forums, but nothing makes a notice difference, or makes it a fame changer as to where I'll get a full day of moderate internet/media usage
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried draining and recharging the battery as other threads have suggested? I usually unplug around 9-10am and I don't get battery warning until near midnight or later.
I keep seeing people complain about the battery life constantly.. but to me coming from my bb bold it seems that the battery is lasting way longer then i expected.. first couple charges i let the phone drain down till it shut off, and then charged it 100%.. its still new to me so im constantly playing with it and changing the menus around.. i try to make sure almost everything is closed when im not using it.. cause im sure that eats battery life..

I did it once, but I booted back up the phone a few minutes after I plugged it in, will leaving it off while it does a full 100% charge noticeably increase battery life?
Do you have widgets updating frequently? How frequently? Maybe just too many updating widgets. I get about 18 hours with the screen on for 4.
18 hours also
I'm getting 16-18 hours of use with about 4-5 hours of screen time. Better than expected.
Today I used my phone as much as I used my iPhone 4 on a regular basis. My phone has been off the charger for just over 12 hours and I have 70% of my battery left.

I'm around that too, I use a black background to save power and I have about 5-6 hours of screen time and I watch a movie on it every day (treadmill at the gym)
I only get low battery around midnight
I use advanced task killer and set it to when the screen is off to kill apps, aggressive mode, I can go about 20hrs before I need to recharge. 5-6hrs screen time.

One thing about android is it has true multitasking. Combined with some apps which do NOT close properly and continue to use up CPU this can drain your batter very fast.
In the battery Info your TimeSpentAwake should be ~ the same as Display on time. If not something is not closing properly. Use OSMonitor to check which program it is and either uninstall it or make sure to kill it with task killer after using.
I have the M110S (Korean Galaxy S - I get 16-18 Hrs with moderate use, but M110S comes w/ 2 batteries so i just swap )
Yeah based on people who are getting good battery life mine is absolutely terrible. I am on my fourth full discharge. I have had my phone off the charger for 2 hours and I'm already at 87 percent. I listened to about 45 minutes of cached slacker radio and like 2 posts on xda app

Just to comment on my battery life. I got my phone saturday (2.5 days ago) and its been on the whole time with medium usage. When I got the phone the pamphlet inside said "fully charge before you turn on" and thats what I did. My battery is at 41% and the only time that I have charged it since is when I am connecting it to my PC for a very short amount of time. I have had great battery life so it is possible. I am very impressed with it.
Yes...my battery life has been good...
Screen brightness all the way down (auto brightness off) *same for the browser brightness
Screen timeout 15 secs (annoying sometimes so maybe 30 secs)
No window animations
Power saving mode off (no point in having the lcd adjust if its already as low as it will go)
I also dont have any widgets that update in the background, however i'd imagine one or two wouldnt affect the battery much
These settings have worked out for me and i use the phone moderately with 2 hourly updating email accounts.....

Battery life for me has been decent. I consider myself a moderate user and I can go from 7:30am till I go to bed at night without dying, but its close. Coming from an iPhone 2G, where with the same usage I could get 2-3 days on one charge, its a little disappointing. But it is what it is I guess. I have heard horror stories of EVO's only going 4-6 hours on a full charge, thats ridiculous.
But what gets me is all this nonsense about fully discharging before charging back up every time. These are Li-ion batteries, they are not Ni-cads, they will not get a "memory" if you dont fully discharge every time. Yes, its good the very first time, to fully charge it before using it, but after that, it doesnt really matter.
Also, one more thing I noticed. The phone will stop charging the battery the second its fully charged. So if your phone reaches 100% charge at like 2am, it stops charging at 2am and you are then going from 2am till whenever you take it off charge in the morning. I noticed this the other day. As soon as the phone told me it was fully charged, the battery icon turned into a normal battery icon even though it was still plugged in. So its possible that the phone is going for 4, 5, 6 hours off charge before you even wake up. What I do to make sure I'm at 100% when I leave, is when I get up I unplug it, use it for a minute then put back on charge while showering. Then when I leave for work, I know its fully charged at 100%.
I guess I'll be switching out phones at Best Buy today as well. Phone keeps losing 30-40% overnight (more like 5 hours max since I'm a night owl) even with everything turned off. When I do get back to a 90% charge before I leave for work at 8am, I'm usually left with 30-40% by 5pm after 15 texts or so and a few emails.
I am fairly sure all new batteries have a chip in them that regulates the power. So you HAVE to run it down to 0-5% and charge it back too 100% several times before the battery is even calibrated for use. That has to be why its 50/50 battery sucks battery is great, just let it drain and charge it again.
battery life simply not acceptable
Hey guys,
I know many people post on battery life.
Here is my situation.
I do not care about beauty, but functionality is a must.
I am in the hospital from ca 6am to 7Pm and I have Q4 call meaning every fourth night its to midnight. That is simply a fact of my life.
My requirement:
I need my phone to last for this duration without recharge.
1.)
I don't need or use widgets
2.)
I don't need or use a wallpaper other than a solid black background.
I do need and use:
the GSM radio and wifi both need to run the entire time and reception is what it is.
My applications of use:
merck manual, dynamed, epocrates the usual in my boat.
I really really want to use this phone, but battery life wise only my blackberry with extended battery and my iphone 4 can hack it.
If any of you have any suggestions on what I could do plz let me know. My last resort is carrying two batteries, but that would frankly be admitting that this phone is inferior to the iphone 4 which can hack a 20 hour usage day in my setting.
(I absolutely cannot turn wifi or 3G off both must run)
I am open to all suggestions including the task killr controversy or anything else constructive one may have. Any extended size batteries out there for the captivate?
Thanks a bunch in advance.
(Having had my secretary spend 4 hours rooting the phone and sideloading Merck manual is a testament to the pathetic entity that is AT&T by the way. If you have professional apps from an institutional subscription you cannot download the software from the market...)
PS: My secretary is not exactly a hacker so forgive the 4 hour timeframe.
I consider myself to be a heavy user!! I like to text, browse the web, listen to music (either from my own files or streaming,) check email and comment on facebook all throughout the day. I did that perfectly fine with my Bold 9700, that battery lasted a full day or more.
I had an iPhone 4 and my battery would not last my 8 hour work shift!! I either had a bad battery or who knows what was going on with that phone. I didn't even leave the apps running...the phone was nice, but that battery killed it for me. I don't understand how some people got a full day out of it.
On the Captivate the most I have gotten has been around 10 hours of use and that's not even using it how I normally like to. I stop charging it at 8:30 and my battery is 100% around 10am I'm already in my low 90's or upper 80's. I don't have any widgets updating, I have a black wallpaper, I don't have the haptic feedback on, and I sync email hourly.
Could my battery be bad?? How can some of you manage to get 16 or so hours out of it??

[NS4G] Why won't my phone properly charge?

I am having horrible issues with my Nexus S 4G. The phone does not seem to charge properly.
What is wrong with this phone? My Evo would charge at around 800+mA in, while the NS4G barely gets above 100 with the screen on and around 400 screen off. Is this just a Samsung vs HTC design issue or should I return this while I can?
Additionally, the charge never gets to 100%. I've read that charging while the phone is off alleviates the problem but it hadn't helped at all innumerable case.
Is SBC available for this phone? I really enjoyed that extra feature on my old phone.
Thank you!

Mine doesn't charge to 100% either. It actually seems to charge to around 80% because as soon as I unplug it, it drops to around 80% within the first hour and then discharges normally from there.
The battery is not supposed to charge to 100. Its a feature that turns charging off right around 94 percent to preserve the life span of the battery it self.

you can try wiping the battery stats from the recovery. some times it helps.
Sent from two cans and a few strings.

I actually like my Sensation, but I'm gonna have to return it

Kind of makes me sad though. The device feels good in my hand and I like it overall, but the battery performance is unacceptable for me. I went to bed with it having something like 93% (dropping from 100% after like 15min of play). Not even 6h later I wake up and when I look at it, the battery is already drained to 85% only from standby (Yes,always-on mobile data is deactivated, power efficiency is on). After playing with the unit in train and some browsing while commuting for 30min, its already at 70% or something. During the next few hours, while working, I was just checking mails, using whatsapp from time to time and writing a few messages. No surfing, no videos no games.
By 3PM the battery was at 15%. Even worse, the damn thing takes some 4h+ to fully charge. That's just too damn long, my iphone 3gs charges fully in about an hour. What is also very frustrating is that the Sensation discharges a good portion of its current as pure HEAT. Never saw a phone get this warm afer 15min of normal usage.
I knew battery wasn't going to be stellar but this just sucks. Most of all that a full charge takes 4h. fail :-/
EDIT: Ok guys the 2.3.4 update did the trick! The battery now chrages fully within 2h and battery life has ridiculously improved!
I took it off the cord around 8am this morning. Now it's 2pm and my battery is at 83 with some 46min screen time and slight usage. Also the heating seems to be gone.
Apart from that, everything runs smoother with the new update. Guess I'm gonna keep the little guy after all
However, I did order 2 extra Ankers + charger (25$!) as additional mobilty is never wrong.
Before you return it, I recommend that you call HTC support and request a warranty exchange for the phone and battery.
You may have a defective unit.
While my battery isn't stellar, I get a minimum of 10 hours before I drop below 20% life (always-on mobile data off, manual syncing, not too many widgets).
Your phone battery performance is not indicative of Sensation battery performance for the overall majority.
Most have said that the battery gets better after a few full charges/discharges, and the todays new update is supposed to improve battery performance. Many people say the Sensation is better than most other 4G phones.
I dont play games and such, mostly phone text and email and it lasts me a day and a half. There is also a better battery you can get.
That charging time is ridiculous, which leads me to believe that your unit and/or battery is defective.
Mine charges from 15% to 100% in 2 hours. Same for almost everybody elses phone.
You might want to reconsider and try warranty exchange mentioned earlier. Also, I would suggest the ChiChi battery. I'm running from 7:30 to about 4:00 with my WiFi hot spot turned on for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I'm using my phone for calls, texts etc., my battery still has about 30% left when I leave work.

Dude , custom rom and anker / chitec battery.
My first time with my new anker achieved almost 24 hours on battery and almost 4 hours screen time with quite alot of use during that time.
Totally destroyed my oem battery in every way.
Also I would do a Warranty Exchange and with the new update I have seen a big differance in 2.3.4 vs 2.3.3 in terms of battery life and speed of Sense in general. I purchased a Anker 1900mah battery for $10 and fully charged to dead I get on average about 17-20 hours and I would say I'm a good moderate to HEAVY! user. Switching back to a stock battery after calibrating with the Anker Battery has also improved battery life seeing that I get between 12-14 hours with stock now. I would charge to 100% go to bed and wake up with about 97%-98%

+1 I agree 110%, Try this though Calibrate the Anker Battery then fully charge your stock battery and see what battery life you get.

Get a anker battery and download leedroid/android revolution/insertcoin. I guarantee you won't want to return it than. When I first got my device I was thinking about doing the same thing but after I looked through the thread I saw people were getting better results with the anker or chichi. Don't be discouraged that its a third party. It actually out performs the stock battery and embarrasses it.
Also download calibrate battery from the market.

I had terrible battery life for the first week or so. 6 to 8 hours max, and 2 hours screen time if I was lucky. After conditioning the battery by fully discharging then fully charging on the AC adapter for a few cycles, it corrected itself for the most part. Yesterday I had 15 hours with 3 hours screen time and still had 20+ percent left. I have a chichtech battery sitting in my mailbox right now waiting for me to get off work.

really appreciate the good advice guys, thanks. I have done my bit of reading here and many many people here report having around 4h charge timr (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154780)
So you guys can not confirm this? If so, it might be my battery is faulty. I will upgrade to 2.3.4 and calibrate. Probably will improve battery time, I doubt however it will reduce the charge time...
Something is definitely up. I just got my Sensation 10 days ago and am still stock. It takes me ~2 hours to fully charge, and that's with me using the phone like crazy while its charging....and the phone light on the entire time.
And I get a good full days use out of it....sometimes 2 days if I dont use the screen much and just phone text email.
IT'S ALIVE!!!

Also check if your phone is always awake because I had this and it had a huge affect.
I easily get 16-20 hours with LeeDroid's ROM.
i had the same battery issue with my first sensation. Even after several cycle of charging - discharging, battery calibration, the battery would not last for more than 7-8 hours. i exchanged it , for first couple of days, it didn't hold the charge for long,.but after i did battery calibration and update to 2.3.4, now my battery will last for 12 to 14 hours with moderate use. doesn't get hot with normal use, but over the weekend , i use map navigation and temp reached 48C. I think, i should not use it as GPS for longer than few minutes, or it may burn the phone.
Juice Defender Ultimate is definitely worth the tiny amount of money it costs. Just got just over 3 days on my Sensation, admittedly i hardly used it.
Usually i get a good 22 hours from it with medium use.
HTC sensation
Just replace the battery and you will see the difference.. my phone last ast least 10 hours.. its just amazing....
I lose almost no charge while it sits on standby.
I work 12 hour shifts, I listen to Music the entire time, browse, login to home computers for about 30 minutes using Teamviewer and keep up with RSS feeds throughout.
By the end of shift I'm down to 5%.
Sounds like you need a replacement, rather than a return, bud.

Battery XE vs Galaxy S2 - can some1 comment?

Hi all,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 from work, have had it since summer. Got the Sensation XE for private recently and been having a feeling it's consuming the battery well faster. After making some searches and reading some I purchased one of those Anker 1900mAh batteries, got it yesterday and charged it up. I then had both phones lying on the table, screen off doing nothing. About 2-3h later the Samsung was at 98% whilst the HTC was at 87%!!!
I decided to at least restart the HTC and after the restart it showed 88%. I then left them over night, more or less 8 hours - right now the Samsung is at 90% and the HTC at 74%.
Now I know that batteries don't reach their top performance immediately but require a couple of charges first, but how do these numbers sound to you guys? The 13% drop within the first 2-3h was scary and ridiculous, but the overnight loss seems reasonable yet still far worse than the S2. And this is with the Anker battery, not the original.... the Samsung is rated at 1650mAh only.
I've not done this test with the original battery yet, it seems that it kept it's charge better than the Anker though - although on the other hand it had a tendency of staying at 100% for quite a while then dropping faster. Is there some procedure to calibrate/reset battery perhaps?
Cheers
//Joris
You could let the battery of XE die and recharge it back to 100% for a few times. If you are rooted be sure to clear battery stats first when you battery is fully charged before doing the above procedure.
Somehow i've been getting rather great battery life with Anker. Probably only losing around 5% when left overnight. Did you clear battery stats when trying out Anker? That may be the reason why the battery life seems poorer as compared to Galaxy S2.
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk
Hi m8,
cheers for the reply - I do not currently have the phone rooted and, as a matter of fact, would like to keep it that way. Was looking into the wipe battery stats/resets but all I did find related to rooted phones. Guess there's no way for a non-rooted?
It's currently down to 32%, the Samsung is at 70%. That said the HTC has had some light use whereas the Samsung has been sat in my pocket all day, doing not much more than pushing work email and some syncing.
Was thinking to plug it into charger now but better to wait till it's nearly dead? Or even till it shuts itself off?
Sense is a resource hog so that is where probably the majority of your power is going, take a look in the phones battery settings
Had it on charge over night (phone switched off), unplugged it around 7 this morning, so approx 7 hours ago. It's now at 92% with some light use, which is quite impressive - if it's "true" (I'm expecting that battery level is going to drop much faster during the day than it did this morning, when it was at 100% quite long).
Right now it's showing:
34% Screen
34% Phone idle
18% Phone inactive
10% Phonecalls
4% Camera
Not sure that's actually since last charge though, as I've no recollection of using camera at all :/
*edit*
whilst posting this and having screen active it dropped to 90%... so let's see how it is going to hold up during the day...

Battery Life Help!

Hey Xda,
I just got the One S on Thursday and I've been wondering about my battery life. Everyone , from reviews to here on XDA, says how the One S has good battery life but I think I'm having problems. Now mind you I've done about 3 full cycles of draining the battery then fully charging it from Thursday to now but my battery life seems subpar. For example I just woke up at 730 am at 100% and have been using the phone from then to now 823am. That's one hour of extremely light browsing on Xda with brightness low in a dark room and WiFi on. No calls nothing but browsing. I I rooted andcustom ROMd my phone yesterday but this has been this way since I got the phone. My battery life is at 87%. Is thanormal?

My phone drops one percent every 2 minutes of screen on use. it doesnt matter what i'm doing.
this sucks watching the percentage drop so quick, this is like my battery life on the vibrant after almost 2 years of use off of that battery -.-

So if you had screen on for 45 mins in that one hour, and you battery dropped from 100 to 87, I would say it is normal, not mention you kept WiFi on which uses quite a lot battery.
But I don't get what you said 1 percent every 2 mins, in that case 45 mins would cost you about 22, 23%, not from 100 to 87. So did I miss something?
