Battery Life Help! - HTC One S

Hey Xda,
I just got the One S on Thursday and I've been wondering about my battery life. Everyone , from reviews to here on XDA, says how the One S has good battery life but I think I'm having problems. Now mind you I've done about 3 full cycles of draining the battery then fully charging it from Thursday to now but my battery life seems subpar. For example I just woke up at 730 am at 100% and have been using the phone from then to now 823am. That's one hour of extremely light browsing on Xda with brightness low in a dark room and WiFi on. No calls nothing but browsing. I I rooted andcustom ROMd my phone yesterday but this has been this way since I got the phone. My battery life is at 87%. Is thanormal?

It really depends, how long was your screen on time within that one hour?

Screen was on like that whole 45 minutes
My phone drops one percent every 2 minutes of screen on use. it doesnt matter what i'm doing.
this sucks watching the percentage drop so quick, this is like my battery life on the vibrant after almost 2 years of use off of that battery -.-

So if you had screen on for 45 mins in that one hour, and you battery dropped from 100 to 87, I would say it is normal, not mention you kept WiFi on which uses quite a lot battery.
But I don't get what you said 1 percent every 2 mins, in that case 45 mins would cost you about 22, 23%, not from 100 to 87. So did I miss something?

My battery is weird!!

When I put my phone to charge for a while then unplug it on whatever percentage it's on it would stay on that percentage for an hour plus. After that it would drain 3-5 percent every 5 minutes or so. Why does it do that for every time I first take it off the charger?
At first it made me think my battery would last 2 days. Lol

mine does that too, when i take it off the charger, the fully charged message stayed on for over an hour, i thought wow...next time i looked at it 10 min later, it was at 80%
Lol yeah! As soon it goes down that one percentage it starts going.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one experiencing that. I've also tried turning everything sync related off to see if that helps, but so far no dice. Although, I could have overlooked a thing or two I guess.
i noticed the same thing here. idk why it does that
Mine did the same thing the first day, so I checked the battery usage when I got home and saw that "android system" was using over 50% of the battery! I turned everything off, deleted widgets and the next day, same issue, "android system" using around half of my battery life. So Friday I did a factory reset, let it erase everything and start from scratch. Since then, my phone doesn't do that anymore.
I'm actually getting a little better battery life on this phone than I did on my N1. Check your battery use in the settings and see if yours is doing something similar. If Android System is over 10-15%, something is wrong.
The first 2 days I had to charge my phone twice to get through a day. Last night, with 2 hours of phone calls, some browsing, a couple hours of messaging, 30 mins of video chat, and random checking of time, weather, etc. My phone lasted about 17 hours before dying.
The only thing that's using most of the battery is display. Display uses 74% and everything else is under 10%. Why is display using so much?

you have to remember that this is a percentage of what has been used, not 74% of the battery total. At least how I understand it.
My battery goes down pretty smooth but man this thing is horrible on the juices. With sync off and screen brightness to low all while making sure I am quick about using it the battery is in the red mid-day. Not happy with the battery at all, i realize it is a smartphone and all but with my N1 overclocked and everything on including GPS i had no battery problems. Other than that i love this phone

I actually like my Sensation, but I'm gonna have to return it

Kind of makes me sad though. The device feels good in my hand and I like it overall, but the battery performance is unacceptable for me. I went to bed with it having something like 93% (dropping from 100% after like 15min of play). Not even 6h later I wake up and when I look at it, the battery is already drained to 85% only from standby (Yes,always-on mobile data is deactivated, power efficiency is on). After playing with the unit in train and some browsing while commuting for 30min, its already at 70% or something. During the next few hours, while working, I was just checking mails, using whatsapp from time to time and writing a few messages. No surfing, no videos no games.
By 3PM the battery was at 15%. Even worse, the damn thing takes some 4h+ to fully charge. That's just too damn long, my iphone 3gs charges fully in about an hour. What is also very frustrating is that the Sensation discharges a good portion of its current as pure HEAT. Never saw a phone get this warm afer 15min of normal usage.
I knew battery wasn't going to be stellar but this just sucks. Most of all that a full charge takes 4h. fail :-/
EDIT: Ok guys the 2.3.4 update did the trick! The battery now chrages fully within 2h and battery life has ridiculously improved!
I took it off the cord around 8am this morning. Now it's 2pm and my battery is at 83 with some 46min screen time and slight usage. Also the heating seems to be gone.
Apart from that, everything runs smoother with the new update. Guess I'm gonna keep the little guy after all
However, I did order 2 extra Ankers + charger (25$!) as additional mobilty is never wrong.
Before you return it, I recommend that you call HTC support and request a warranty exchange for the phone and battery.
You may have a defective unit.
While my battery isn't stellar, I get a minimum of 10 hours before I drop below 20% life (always-on mobile data off, manual syncing, not too many widgets).
Your phone battery performance is not indicative of Sensation battery performance for the overall majority.
Most have said that the battery gets better after a few full charges/discharges, and the todays new update is supposed to improve battery performance. Many people say the Sensation is better than most other 4G phones.
I dont play games and such, mostly phone text and email and it lasts me a day and a half. There is also a better battery you can get.
That charging time is ridiculous, which leads me to believe that your unit and/or battery is defective.
Mine charges from 15% to 100% in 2 hours. Same for almost everybody elses phone.
You might want to reconsider and try warranty exchange mentioned earlier. Also, I would suggest the ChiChi battery. I'm running from 7:30 to about 4:00 with my WiFi hot spot turned on for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I'm using my phone for calls, texts etc., my battery still has about 30% left when I leave work.

Dude , custom rom and anker / chitec battery.
My first time with my new anker achieved almost 24 hours on battery and almost 4 hours screen time with quite alot of use during that time.
Totally destroyed my oem battery in every way.
Also I would do a Warranty Exchange and with the new update I have seen a big differance in 2.3.4 vs 2.3.3 in terms of battery life and speed of Sense in general. I purchased a Anker 1900mah battery for $10 and fully charged to dead I get on average about 17-20 hours and I would say I'm a good moderate to HEAVY! user. Switching back to a stock battery after calibrating with the Anker Battery has also improved battery life seeing that I get between 12-14 hours with stock now. I would charge to 100% go to bed and wake up with about 97%-98%

+1 I agree 110%, Try this though Calibrate the Anker Battery then fully charge your stock battery and see what battery life you get.

Get a anker battery and download leedroid/android revolution/insertcoin. I guarantee you won't want to return it than. When I first got my device I was thinking about doing the same thing but after I looked through the thread I saw people were getting better results with the anker or chichi. Don't be discouraged that its a third party. It actually out performs the stock battery and embarrasses it.
Also download calibrate battery from the market.

I had terrible battery life for the first week or so. 6 to 8 hours max, and 2 hours screen time if I was lucky. After conditioning the battery by fully discharging then fully charging on the AC adapter for a few cycles, it corrected itself for the most part. Yesterday I had 15 hours with 3 hours screen time and still had 20+ percent left. I have a chichtech battery sitting in my mailbox right now waiting for me to get off work.

really appreciate the good advice guys, thanks. I have done my bit of reading here and many many people here report having around 4h charge timr (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154780)
So you guys can not confirm this? If so, it might be my battery is faulty. I will upgrade to 2.3.4 and calibrate. Probably will improve battery time, I doubt however it will reduce the charge time...
Something is definitely up. I just got my Sensation 10 days ago and am still stock. It takes me ~2 hours to fully charge, and that's with me using the phone like crazy while its charging....and the phone light on the entire time.
And I get a good full days use out of it....sometimes 2 days if I dont use the screen much and just phone text email.
IT'S ALIVE!!!

Also check if your phone is always awake because I had this and it had a huge affect.
I easily get 16-20 hours with LeeDroid's ROM.
i had the same battery issue with my first sensation. Even after several cycle of charging - discharging, battery calibration, the battery would not last for more than 7-8 hours. i exchanged it , for first couple of days, it didn't hold the charge for long,.but after i did battery calibration and update to 2.3.4, now my battery will last for 12 to 14 hours with moderate use. doesn't get hot with normal use, but over the weekend , i use map navigation and temp reached 48C. I think, i should not use it as GPS for longer than few minutes, or it may burn the phone.
Juice Defender Ultimate is definitely worth the tiny amount of money it costs. Just got just over 3 days on my Sensation, admittedly i hardly used it.
Usually i get a good 22 hours from it with medium use.
HTC sensation
Just replace the battery and you will see the difference.. my phone last ast least 10 hours.. its just amazing....
I lose almost no charge while it sits on standby.
I work 12 hour shifts, I listen to Music the entire time, browse, login to home computers for about 30 minutes using Teamviewer and keep up with RSS feeds throughout.
By the end of shift I'm down to 5%.
Sounds like you need a replacement, rather than a return, bud.

Going nuts!! Battery...

Have to charge almost twice a day... I believe it happened after latest 1.45.531.1 update....
Disabled all animation, got auto adjust for display, disabled all what I could.. Still gives me 12 -16 hours on standby only....NOT even using the phone!!!!
Does anyone have something like that??? Or there is some remedy I skipped?
Sorry if I repeat someone's question.
Running full stock, HTC battery.
Thanks in advance!!
Tester.
PS. Recently exchanged the phone.... First one R.I.P......died completely, didn't even charge.
Is there a chance they swapped a refurbished one on me??? How to find out???
can you provide a screenshot of the battery usage graph? also, have you tried getting an aftermarket, bigger battery such as the anker?
I was the same way as you. I checked my battery graph, and standby was using something like 80% of the battery with almost everything turned off. By the time I got home from work I would need to charge it immediately. I bought one of the Anker batteries on Amazon for $15 bucks or so, and I'm now getting about 2 days for a charge. I don't know what it was with my battery, because it sounds like my experience wasn't typical, but I didn't really feel like going through HTC when I could just pay the $15.
I'm with ya...
This phone was running PERFECT prior to the HTC update. Now I'm having a plethora amount of problems, including the battery. For example, prior to the update I would get 13-16 hours on HEAVY usage... Moderate usage? Try a day or day in a half. Now take today for example, I unplugged my phone a little before 7am and I had 20 something percent 4 hours later.
I'm telling you, that HTC update really messed this phone up IMO.
Thanks, guys!!
Will try to get Anker battery, I believe it's 1900 mAh.
But again something running on the background with that update. We'll see.
I'll try to get the graph, maybe someone'll get some sense of it...
Much appreciated,
Tester.
here are the battery stats...
Display..........74%
Cell standby...13%
Phone idle......11%
Voice calls......2%
THAT'S IT!!! Nothing else is running...... SUX...
Still gives 12 - 16 hours of life on almost idle......
I hate to say it,but if you're battery's dying a lot faster after an update,a bigger battery won't help much.
I'd be getting in touch with HTC and ask them what the heck is going on.
Really annoyed with the battery performance. I checked and only display is using 90% of battery. Tried everything to reduce it but no change.

I've had the same issue since the update. My battery drains at a ridiculous rate. I've become really frustrated with the phone since. I rooted it and flashed a custom ROM in hopes of solving the problem but it's the same deal.
I've confirmed it's not the battery either since I've got another one I've tried and only get the same results. Even with Juice Defender running I get nowhere as great a battery life as I did before the update
I'm doing decent 8hrs 20,mins on batt. With 40% left mostly text and internet browsing

Try clicking the graph at the top of the screen it will give you another screen that shows awake/screen time etc. Is your phone going to sleep when you screen turns off?
I was having the same problem and realized that some app was keeping my phone awake even though the screen was off. I uninstalled 80% of the crap I had installed and now my phone sleeps like it should and battery lasts amazingly long time.

Click on the graph in battery stats, it should show awake time and screen on. If your awake time is constant when the screen on time isn't, then chances are you've got an bad app somewhere preventing the phone from sleeping
my battery life was plain **** on 2.3.3., device was running hot all the time (=waste of energy), charging took ridiculous 4h+! When I took it off at the charger around 23:00 the battery was dead at 14:00 the next day with most time being idle!
Since my update to 2.3.4 things got so much better. charging takes around 2h and battery finally lasted a whole day and had 40% juice left in the evening.
Since I got my 2 Ankers+charger for 20$, battery life is crazy now. Been on one charge for 2d2h and still had 16% left. Pushmail on, wifi on (cellular data only when not at home), brigthness at 100%, taking video, pictues and some navigation, messaging and phonecalls. Oh yeah and a few minutes of flashlight use
I would say between slight and medium use.
If 2.3.4 worsened your batterylife, contact HTC or your vendor.
I now replaced the battery at 16% with the other Anker because I still need to do my 5 charge cycles on that one to calibrate it.
Here's an example of the graph. At the bottom you can see awake and screen on time. I pulled phone of charger last night, did some browsing, then ran for an hour with music playing in the background (you can see the small green bar on awake even when screen is off). After I surfed a little and left it off the charger when I went to bed. The phone is properly sleeping when the screen is off and almost 16 hours and still have 62%.
Before I uninstalled the apps, the awake time was solid green across the screen.
Anker battery worked wonders on my device. Before I would have to throw it on the charger after lunch as I like to go for a beer after work and the stock battery would never make it that far... Now when I get home from the bar I still have ~30% battery. Anker battery FTW!
flash a custom rom and u will go gaga over ur battery life. definitely works for me. on standby overnight drain 0-1%.
I found out that if you don't have strong signal at your location your battery drains pretty fast that's why I always connect my phone to WiFi at my apartment where my phone looses signal sometimes. now I lose just 1-2% of power during a night.
Sorry to hear about your battery troubles. A couple days ago I rooted and switched to "Android Revolution HD 3.0.4" and my battery life seems pretty solid. I wasn't having battery life issues prior to this though.
I'm currently in the process of calibrating the battery:
- drain it mostly
- turn off
- plug it in overnight while still off
- in the morning unplug, wait 15 minutes, replug for a few hours; do this ONLY ONCE or you may damage the battery
- power on, immediately go to recovery, advanced, reset battery stats
- start normally
- drain battery until it shuts down; a continuous stress test or stability test app is probably ideal
- once it shuts off, turn it on again to double-check that it's dead; it should only come on for a second or two
- while off, plug in and allow to fully charge; no fooling around with plugging/unplugging, just normal
- calibration complete!
I think you can follow a similar procedure (minus clearing battery stats) to refresh the battery calibration even without rooting/custom recovery. I've read the effectiveness is similar. The phone just needs to be retaught what "full" and "empty" mean, all in one charge cycle. If you calibrate it wrong you could have issues with it shutting off while still reading ~15% battery life.
Anyway, as I said, I'm in the process of doing this. Currently I'm in the "drain it" phase... with my screen at maximum brightness (remaining on), overclocked to 1.5 ghz, I've been running "StabilityTest" (from market) for one hour and fifteen minutes. It stresses both cores as well as the RAM. At this time, my battery is at around 30-40% or so, and it's getting really hot! The phone's temperature is reading as 54.8 degrees!
Also, yesterday I used the GPS for about 4 hours before it died, this was prior to any calibration attempt. I think this is within typical battery life considering that the screen stays on.
TL;DR: Maybe you just need to try a custom rom or recalibrate your battery. Miscalibrated battery can be caused by flashing/updating a rom, I imagine even when it's an OTA. Sense is crippling your phone anyway, you might as well give it a try IMHO.
get yourself an anker battery..I havent charged my phone since the day before and now i have 20% left! heavy usage

Very curious quirk On Android Open Kang Project ROM... Near Unlimited Battery!!!!

hi all...
soo after my comments over a week ago on the aokp website for this build, i decided afterall to take the plunge and update. i was on b26, so subsequently had to flash b27 and then this. everything has gone absolutely swimmingly with no issues at all so far....
HOWEVER>>>>>
I am faced with a very puzzling quirk. its by nooooo means a problem at all, infact it quite the opposite!!! let me explain.
i've started charging my phone in the evening these days for some stupid reason and then, when charged taking it off and going to bed. After getting this milestone on, my battery has been killed over night, draining to around 15%. Normally, it would drain to around 70% and be flat by the end of the day ready for charging again.
This continued for a few days when i decided to root out the cause of the massive overnite idle drain. I installed a fantastic free app called Badass Battery Monitor (which i highly recommend btw!), and over a period of a couple of days the offending app was weeded out. It was Nova Launcher. This had never happened to me before and couldn't understand it. So, as part of my diagnostics, I decided to confirm the findings by removing it and just using stock.
Over a couple of days monitoring, with exactly the same charging method, my battery levels returned to normal drainage with around 75% battery left by the morning. Fantastic. I had found the problem fixed it and got back to normal. Soooo where is the quirk i here you say!!!? lol Well......
On average, from everything i've read in forums, battery drain overnight while phone in standby is around 20/30%, so mine WAS right up there with the majority of you.
Last night, i decided to charge to full and then wipe battery stats. Which i did. Now, bare in mind here that I ONLY have the standard battery that is supplied with the Galaxy Nexus. I got up this morning, and to my utter amazement, my battery had only drained 2%
Now been incredibly realisting here based on average overnight drains, i was 100% sure that this was deffo an error. I have done everything from restarting the phone, taking the battery out, but still the level in my battery was saying the same.
As I sit here writing this, I have been streaming a radio station via wifi on the phone for the last 2 hrs, and atm my battery is telling me that it is STILL 85% full.
I am DEFFO not complaining, but i'm sure now, you can see why the hell i am so puzzled! HOW THE HELL IS THIS HAPPENING, because i can genuinely find no explanation at all for it
as a follow up, it is now more or less 5 hrs since my orginal post, and my battery is reporting that it is 75% full
Jeesh, 20 to 30 idle drain overnight? My phone drains about 3 to 5 overnight which is typically 8 hours of sleep.

Interesting quirk. Are you a heavy or a light user? It'd be nice to see how it drains after a full drain and recharge.

well, to see if what was been reported was correct, i've been an absolute heavy user today. i have wifi on, ive streamed radio via internet for around 3 hrs, ive been playing all sorts of games and watched a few youtube vids. and my battery is atm reporting 74% life left
so here i am, STILL very very puzzled..
my battery life is just going and going with no signs of running flat... have a look at these screenshots and give me an explanation as to why i suddenly have a super battery!
MAYBE you really have a super battery or your mobile is glitched and shows the battery like that due to laG?
I'm on miui and I lose 0% overnight. It just depends on the ROM, but 20-30% is ridiculous!

Your states do not seem super impressive. On most phones the screen is the biggest drain. You show 49% battery with a screen on of only 1 hour. After 33 hours you've only used your phone for 1 hour screen on. Thats VERY little.
I usually get 2.5-3 hours of screen on time for my galaxy nexus.

Thanks for the app recommendation! Been looking for something like it all day.
This will depend on ROM/Radio/Kernel user installed programs/sync etc but 2-6% is normal drain over night anyone with 20% needs to seriously look @ battery stats and work out what's causing wake locks.
Also not forgetting most phones need to bed in after a flash which can take 2-3 days before we see real battery info.

How does the battery drain on your S6?

On my G3, when I fully charge the phone, it would stay at 100% for a VERY long time before dropping down to 99%. The most I've gotten out of the 1% before was about 25 minutes of SoT.
On my S6, once the phone is fully charged, it seems to drop to 99% very quickly, within just a couple minutes of using the device.
What causes this difference between the two models and does your S6 act the same way as mine?
So far my GF and I notice the battery drops quickly also.

Sure SOT is important but it depends on your standby too. Example 6hrs SOT with 8hrs Standby is kinda expected and normal. If you can get 6hrs SOT with 24hrs Standby the that is mightly impressive.
True but 19 hrs standby and 1 30 on screen is awful. That means you picked up the phone and drained it half way in an hour and a bit

Im not sure you get how it works bud.
That 1.5hrs SOT was not achieved in one continous sitting.
If you read my previous post i explained that you can get 6hrs SOT with the S6 easy but your standby will be short say around 8hrs. If you watch videos no stop on the S6 you could probably get 7-8hrs SOT before the battery is flat. This is normal for the S6.
Basically: Long SOT = shorter standby
Long standby = shorter SOT
The Holy Grail is Long Standby + Long SOT
EDIT: Im only referring to the S6 in my asaumption. There are flagships out that can get long standby and long SOT already out there namely Note4 and Mate7.
I have pretty terrible standby time though. An all nighter drained 10% but if i use the phone continuously i could get 4hrs of sot lol
Brightness was on auto

I get about a day standby with between 4-5 SOT.
Overnight drain is around 3-4%, I normally sleep around 7hrs a night.
I'm using XtreStoLite seriously debloated ROM, Ktoonsez 920F Kernel.
Also using App Ops and Disable Service to kill Google Play Services wakelocks.
Hope this helps you get better battery life bud.
Playing music through streaming music app Simfy, doesn't require the screen to stay on.
SOT isn't the only way to gauge a battery's performance.
Haha you guys took this thread pretty off-topic. My question was more related to the actual way your battery drains vs battery life.

Apologies OP didn't mean to derail tour thread.
Hmm i wouldnt want to root and unlock yet. Im gonna give it at least a month or two because the rattling home button is quite a concern to me. Even though its not really that bad
Man I must be lucky cause battery life for me looks REALLY good, especially considering the small capacity and the 2k display. Last night I fell asleep in front of the TV with my phone at 20%, woke up this morning and it was still at 20%. It's sipping battery nicely. I'm happy!
Edit: I'm all stock using the G920i. My brightness is controlled manually indoors, automatically outdoors.

I noticed the same thing with my S6 the first night I got it. It came with 50% battery and after an update and me playing around with it a bit I went off to bed at about 23%. The next morning I woke up and it was at 22%. I consider that to be exceptional considering nothing was disabled and it wasn't even on its first charge.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to fully set up my S6 due to exams so it's been sitting on my desk looking pretty. I'm still using my S5 for the time being and plan to fully switch over to the S6 in the next few days!

The battery on my edge seems to drop 1% every hour.
