Ok,I need someone who fits this description to tell me what they think. I'm a heavy, heavy internet user. I'm on simple mobile 60 dollar unlimited everything, even though the 50 dollar unlimited talk and text,100 MB of data would work for me,i don't like restrictions. But i don't get 3g with the captivate running t mobile service so i use wifi as i live in wifi heaven. I just ordered a laptop from Verizon,50 a month for 5 gigs, but i also have wifi. So would you keep paying 60 to simple mobile just to have it if you need it,or would you cut Down to 40 a Month unlimited talk and text, use wifi on the phone and use the laptop as your heavy duty internet source?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I would drop the simple mobile and rely on the wifi for your phone data. I'm a very heavy internet user, I spend several hours online a day. While the Captivate is a great for internet, there's no substitute for a full laptop.
I would keep the "50 dollar unlimited talk and text,100 MB of data" with the 100MB just in case I need to go to some area with no wifi
Yeah im stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I can't afford too much because im only 17,making minium wage and I got a baby due. So im trying to see what other people would do ya know? I figure if I don't pay no more than 100 a month for a phone, and a laptop then that's not too shabby because most contracts other than sprint are running people anywhere from 80 to 100 for unlimited anything. One question, the hp mini has a 1.6 ghz proccessor but I see where people say its not as fast as a full size laptop. Well if speed relied on the proccessor then wouldn't ya think 1.6 ghz would be blazing fast? I know some computers go waaay faster but it seems like that would be atleast as snappy as my cappy

HP mini runs an atom. N455 maybe? Im pretty sure that's a 1.6. Anyway, atoms pretty powerful. I can't say it'd be an i7 or an i3 for that matter, but its great for everyday computing and battery life. I suggest, if an HP mini is what you've gotten, that you add another gig of RAM. It makes a world of difference.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I have an idea. If you are working a minimum wage job with a baby on the way, get some priorities. Perhaps get rid of internet and smart phone and laptop? Goto a library if you need to get online. Its FREE! Quit screwing around online and improve your life so your kid has a better one. That will solve your online/money dilemma.
if u are a heavy internet user get the netbook and drop the data plan on your phone. i got my cappy with no 3G, wifi only and carry my acer aspire one almost everywhere i go. its more convenient especially if i need to RDP client PCs, nothing beats the full keyboard and larger screen for heavy internet usage

I've only done it on a desktop, but you just open it up, and place it in the slot. Google probably has a diagram of which slot is for ram on your laptop

Well look up the HP mini you ordered on HPs website and. You should be able to find a list of compatible RAM for the mini. From there, you could go to Best Buy, or buy from one of many online retailers. Usually, laptops and such will have a plate held in by a screw on the back where the RAM is housed.

When your laptop arrives go to crucial.com they have a program in there that auto detects your system and will give you an idea what memory upgrade your laptop needs and it's very accurate so you don't thinker around for the right memory module to buy.

but yea if you have Wifi teather as USB is not an option for Such a well built device. You can get it some where around here if you don't have it now.
EDIT: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Also no there is not Extra price for Tethering, I have Sprint and have never had a problem. If you want to get better speeds right now Sprint is advertising their Overdrive for 3G and 4G speeds.
we don't like the word apple round here. apple + android = fail!
But Orange is alright

jk. just make sure you have unlmt data...
I'm doing that exact thing. I have not been charged (or even arrested). =P
Also, yes it does work. Works quite well actually. I got to play with a few yesterday morning before the store opened. They're nice, and I was going to pick one up, but instead I left with a couple thousand dollars worth of speakers.
This is exactly why I can't justify buying the 3G model

Seriously, why would you buy an iPad when it is basically a slate tablet PC that does not allow you to download anything besides app store software and only stuff that carries a higher price than the same iphone apps. Don't tell me you believe that line of BS that they need to charge more for apps because the ipad has a higher resolution. Throw in the lack of gps and 3g on the current model and you have a big loser, IMHO.
If you bought an iPad, wouldn't it get really red-stained after a while? It's just a giant iPod Touch that goes onto a vajay-jay.
Very classy.
I used to think the same
I used to think the same, but not anymore. I am a PC guy, and have been for the last 15+ years. I just recently bought the iPad 2. My fiirst one! I actually got it on release day and HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN SINCE THEN! I used to have the same misconception: a gigant ipod. To me is more like a ipod/kindle/iphone/netbook/movie-music-application-gaming center. It does not replace a pc. (It was never intended to do) But it is definitely a gadget that you must try if you call yourself a geek or a "tech-guy". I love the portability and battery life!! After the Ipad I waited for the non-apple community to release something worth trying. And what did they give us?...a Galaxy Tab. *giggles* So I decided to give Apple a try, and I must say i wish i would of purchased the Ipad the first day it came out. Now Im here eating my apple ipad funny comments but happy i gave it a chance.
I still wish our heros would tether to ps3s

Could it be???
Its all about MONEY!
Because unfettered internet access is nice (Yes, there are alternatives.)
Also, It's easier to sell a $400 device + $30/mo than it is to sell a $700+ device.
Not all of them are like that.
Personally I don't see the appeal. 10 inch devices are not very portable, so why would I want a data plan with that? Plus Mifi is going to kill all this anyway, once people figure out the cost savings.

Mifi is a type of device that verizon and some other stores cell that come with a contract and it puts out a wireless signal for devices to connect to anywhere there is a cell signal but it than runs a cell phone speeds, its like if you have a rooted phone and just get the wifi app to make your phone a hot spot thats what it does.
when i first saw the xoom data plan 1 gig a month for 20......what wft what am i going to do with 1 gig....despicable, and the audacity 10 gig for 80 shameful
Mifi makes sense if you have a few devices on hand like a tablet, an iPod Touch, or anything else with Wifi - and want them all to have 3G. And there's a big cost savings if you wanted to get 3G for every device you own as an alternative.

Similar, I believe. But don't you need to make changes to the cellphone to do that?
What I like about Mifi is that you don't need a cellphone for it. It's whole purpose is to give your Wifi devices access (up to 5 for Sprint, I believe). I have a work crackberry that's locked down, so Mifi makes sense for my needs.

(back to the thread) -- hard to say. Depends on your needs, of course. The good is that the screen angles seem to be a little better than a GTAB, the LCD devices seem to be free of any major defects (the PQ devices might have a few), and a Tegra 2 1GB device means it's fast and will likely get faster when the software catches up. The bad is the same software issues that plague the GTAB affect the Adam, and of course there's a risk with using a startup in India if they happen to go belly up.
IMO.......no....wait until a tab with a better screen comes out. There are IPS tabs coming and unless you spend a ton of time in direct sunlight then the pixelqi is not worth the expense
MiFi and its equivalent are the "killer app" for these type systems
I have to agree with roebeet, MiFi or its equivalent are the best way to go. I have a Cradlepoint Cr300 with (german) T-Mobile usb stick and it works for all of my systems (Mackbook Pro, iPad and G-Tablet).
Not having to buy a "plan" makes it easier to collect more toys!
It looks really good. I have been following it for several months on the Notion Ink website blog. It looks like it might be well designed and tightly integrated.
BUT,
It is designed in India and made in china (and ships directly from there). I don't think there is a US presence (that is probably not a deal killer).
You probably can't get one any time soon. Unless you are part of the select group that gets an invitation.
The wifi LCD version is the same price as the GTab. The higher end version (3g or Pixel Qi) is in the Xoom range. I think the GTab is a kick ass platform and with Vegan, it runs really well.
Notion Ink has no market and no access to google market. They are promising to open a market soon, but I don't know how many aps they will have. I suspect that normal android apps may not run very well because the software is so customized. So you are stuck with the apps that ship with the device.
Feedback from early users is that there are problems with the update process so the Adam really doesn't work very well.
I ended up buying a gtab and am having a blast.
Montyhp
If you are considering a Gtab I highly recomend buying it from a place that doesn't have restocking fee. I am not trying to be a troll, I really enjoyed the Gtab but the viewing angles on the screen are so aweful that I ended up returning mine after 10 days. The commmunity support and the hardware for the gtab is excellent but the screen was the deal breaker for me. Also, with viewsonics other tablets coming out, I really wonder how long viewsonic will continue to sell the gtab.
I canceled my Notion Ink order and got a G-Tab instead. Couldn't be happier. Rooted with Vegantab and running great.
I then retired my trusty Palm Centro for an old Moto Backflip we had hanging around. Rooted the Backflip and am tethering away with Barnacle Wifi Tether.

Hey guys I saw no slickdeals that the price of the HP Touchpad is dropping 300 bucks tomorrow cause they dropped it! I called to confirm and its true, I bought 3 for the full price and they 100% guaranteed that I would be given credit when the price adjust tomorrow at 7AM EST.
Heres the Slickdeals thread:

You can either wait till tomorrow for the price drop or call in right now and pay full price and have it adjusted tomorrow morning. Some are saying the new price is live for the Academic shop but some people can't see it with .edu email addresses.
I have played with the tab in a store and I have to say for $99 this is one Hell of a steal.
Good luck.
Wow. I was expecting a liquidation, but this is remarkable. For browsing the web and random Document editing, this is an amazing price!
Does anyone know the hackability of this device? Do you think that, despite discontinuation, that the app market might become at least respectable (with xda involvement)?

I don't know about the hackability but I'll tell you this tab handles flash like a boss. Its the only one I've seen that can do 1080p youtube without a hitch. And I dunno, they are killing off the touchpad itself but they want to keep webOS alive, I don't really know what that means for webOS on the tab.

I'm DEFINITELY buying one and I'm sure ICS can be ported to it when the time comes since the source will be released for it. This is a SNAPDRAGON QUALCOMM CPU and GPU and HTC uses that for their CPU/GPUs so I don't see why it's not possible, someone would have to write a kernel from scratch though to make it smoother, just like how the HD2 has Android, but it's not perfect since it's not using it's own kernel. If someone actually takes the time to unlock the bootloader(if it isn't already unlocked) and write up a kernel for it and port ICS to it, this tablet can be badass ;D $99 Android Tablet with ICS pl0x.

Unfortuanely, most Americans won't be able to buy this phone. The monthly service bills are whack a$$ high because the carriers want you to sign a 2 year contract. That way, you get a higher monthly bill but a lower up front price.
You could buy an unlocked phone, but then you would end up paying the same service bill as someone who got their phone for 500USD less. So unless he or she is OK with paying for the phone almost twice, no American will buy this phone. Or any unlocked phone.
Or of course, someone may have money to burn. The only major carrier that (only 1month ago) doesn't use contracts anymore is T mobile.

Except a sapphire crystal display, which I believe has a hardness of 9H; Diamond is 10H.
A 128GB capacity.
4 GB RAM.
Silicon Anode Li-ion batteries (as opposed to standard graphite) that are estimated to have 3X the capacity.
Stereo speakers (like the HTC One)
The ability to dual boot Android and Ubuntu.
The ability to connect to an external display and become a full desktop PC.
Dual-LTE antenna.
OTG support.
$700 price.
Nope, nothing special about this phone at all.
Obviously, this is only on paper. The Edge, unfortunately, will never see the light of day. The specs are unrealistic for the price, unless Canonical is working on a tiny, tiny margin. I would LOVE to have this phone instead of my One. But I live in 'Murica, where everybody who doesn't sign a contract pays double for their phones...

You merely needed to have a look at the indiegogo page to see that nobody made a "crap load":
What if you fail to reach the funding target?
We appreciate every bit of support we receive during the 30 days, and every backer will be welcomed into the Ubuntu community. If we don’t reach our target then we will focus only on commercially available handsets and there will not be an Ubuntu Edge. All contributions will be fully refunded.

Anyway... as a Maemo user (still), I'm glad Ubuntu will be focusing on commercial handsets. I've no use for a super Ubuntu phone that costs as much as a mid-level laptop; rather, I want Linux to breathe life in the low-end segment. Android is a RAM hog, and the low-end handsets don't quite have enough to run it properly; but a pure Linux system works wonders with low amounts of memory. My N900 does almost everything I'd want to do on a modern dualcore phone with a gig of RAM, and it only has 256 megabytes. If we got Ubuntu running on cheap phones we could get excellent performance on phones costing less than $150 - possibly even entry-level ones costing less than $100, if the system could be slimmed down enough.
I'm also hoping that the availability of drivers for Ubuntu might make it possible to run other systems - specifically, Debian-based ones.
I like its look and feel but Android looks and feels even better
