Best prepaid device - General Questions and Answers

I'm going to go off contact soon I want to know. The most cost effective way to get a new devices. I want to do some mobile game and check email stuff like that. At the moment I have a wilds fire s It works OK. I was looking at a Nexis 7 with a portable hot spot. Or the 3g ver. If I went this route I would be useing some kind of voip. I do a lot of manual work so Im a bit. Worried about the size and it getting damage. When you move into a phone the price shoots up a lot then I have to start looking into the used market like eBay. I would even use a iPod touch If need be but would like to stay with the Android platform. I don't mind a contact so much but prepaid see much cheeper I guess if I do get a contract I would get some kind of service plan. Just in case I know people ask this question all the time but it seems like tablets and phones get release on a weekly bases and it hard to keep track of it all. Thanks much

which Android to buy kindly advise

hi
Hi sorry if this is the wrong place to as this question but kindly advise
im planning to buy anew Android phone preferably a HTC(no offense to other brands its just the feeling that a known devil is better than an unknown angel that's all i have been using HTC for around 2yrs and absolutely no problem till date)
i was looking at the tatoo but it seems to be same as my jade with android but it seems to be the only affordable for me so can any one kindly advise on which one to buy
i would have been really happy if i could get android os for my jade but it seems to be an impossibility as of now and my crazy itch to buy anew phone and a android is kinda taking over(the wife is gona kik my A**)
Well, if I Were to make a speculation without being biased.. I would say Flash 10 is coming soon enough and according to Adobe the only 2 android phones strong enough to run the full package are the Nexus and the Moto Droid. All the other models (HTC etc.) are running flash light which is a half baked memory hog.. 'but it works'.
Also, 99% of the applications/mods I have seen are working on the Droid or compiled specifically for the droid.
In the case of you being a 'I dont want to or need to root' person I would say simply... If your going to build a computer.. would you build a 486 or a pentium 3 OR would you build something that will at the least run the current existing and immediate next gen software?
Hope Ive helped you out.

If the OP wants HTC, why not the Desire? Aiui HTC make both the Nexus for Google & the Desire under their own brand; the two are virtually identical wrt hardware, with the Desire being described by some as the Nexus with HTC's Sense ui added. OTOH the Nexus might get more timely updates than HTC's phones.

thanks for ur kind reply but both the phones u mentioned are also quite costly as they have been recently introduced in my country ie India
so i think i will wait for another 6months usually their is a big drop in price around that time

a X10i would do the job right
x10 is good now, but will get even better with android 2.1 or 2.2!

Except that 2.1 will be released in september.
I would advise not to get the Nexus One. The Nexus One has broken multi-touch (because of the sensor that it uses), poor build quality (touchscreen messing up, weird tint on the touchscreen, paint chipping off, etc), and is showing its age already in the USA.
The HTC devices may have flash lite now (I'm talking about the ones that have HTC SENSE) but they are upgradeable to the latest full flash 10.1 once it comes out.
I would go with the HTC Desire or HTC Legend for now but in the USA T-Mobile USA will release the MyTouch Slide (made my HTC) and it will have the same specs as the Nexus One except it will have a 600 mhz processor versus a 1 ghz processor but it has an external keyboard. If you want that, then you can buy it unlocked.

hi
thanks to all who have been kind enough to reply
but looks like all the phones u have advised on are currently too costly in my country(India) around 400 -500$ roughly its kinda costly for me so i have no other option to may be wait for some time till they do come down in price and it does happen all new phones come down on price in about 3-6 months of their intro but thanks guys it was very very nice of you to give me ur kind advise but i dont know why but if i buy i think it would mostly be a HTC brand some how im very happy with my experience with this brand
thanks again guys so nice of you to give me such nice advise
Simple choice...
HTC Desire. IMHO.
I ordered a SIM free HTC Tattoo today. I have 8 months left on my current 18 month contract with my SE W995 which does pretty much most of what I need however I wanted a phone I could use Spotify on and maybe a few other apps. I was torn between the iPhone (yes I know...) and the HTC Desire, both of which I would need to buy SIM free for £400-£450 but in the end I opted for the HTC Tattoo which while limited in specs compared to my other options it'll still do every thing I need from at at only £180! I may get a new phone when my contract ends, but for now I wanted something inexpensive.
would it cost too much to invest in the Motorola Milestone?
thats the out-of-the-US counterpart to the Droid. same hardware but running Android 2.0.1
just throwing that out there.
also, I'm sure you could find a MyTouch or another htc smartphone on eBay for quite cheap.

You know... good phones are bound to be expensive ...
I'm in a country with similar situation as yours (billions of people!) and I can fully understand the pain you are suffering: want to buy a fair device with reasonable prices.
HTC phones are not cheap at all. Try find a Italian version Dream in gray market. It it old and not fully-functioned like these mentioned above, but its price is also cheaper:250USD in my country with much of the playable features.
Sorry for my poor English. I'm not a native.

Actually, these days, it seems that everything anyone wants to do or figure out has been done before.
There is always a way around something.
Proxies, budgets, wants/needs. I'm pretty sure you could get an unlocked iPhone 3G and run Android on it (via OpeniBoot) or go with an unlocked T-Mobile G1. I'd definitely give you any spare android-running phone I had if I had an extra..... I'm sticking to the droid for as long as I can.
Also, try googling around or asking in Yahoo Answers- I'm pretty sure there's someone out there who is a non-horder who just happens to have a spare Android phone. Sorry for your luck My problem is that I can't use my awesome Droid outside of the U.S. (hence why I mentioned the Motorola Milestone, as that would really come in handy for me)

Best starter android phone?

So I'm looking to get my first android powered device , my question is what do you guys suggest to be a good phone for my first experience? Looking at spending around $500 usd budget (will go over for something I really like, but no $800 desire hd stuff lol), and don't want something "out of date" or have a poor build quality.
here is some info to go off of:
-I am not eligible for a upgrade so will pay retail
-In the us
-at&t carrier, no data, so any at&t specific phones are out of the question
-have wifi in vehicle and anywhere I go (one main reason I don't have a data plan)
-like a big screen and or keyboard since my hands aren't exactly small
Thanks in advance for any help. Also one more question that I haven't found the answer for, I saw a marketplace while signing up but cant view, what are the requirements to view?
p.s. I think this might belong in the Q and A section...
my first smartphone was the palm pixi a fantastic OS but then went to htc hero id say thats now a beginners phone
now im with an epic
You could probably score a used Nexus One on eBay or Craigslist for $500.

That is one thing that I've thought about, I've also looked at the htc desire, its a little more then other phones but i like the design and the extra ram it offers.
I think nexus one. Just my .02
Thanks for the responses, I guess I need to start hunting for a good condition nexus one. Am I correct for saying that you can not buy them new anymore?
if you can get one (UK only afaik), the Orange San Francisco seems to be a good phone to start with, at about £90.
It's the ZTE Blade, and has an HDPI (high res) screen and reasonable CPU etc.
Worth a look if you can lay your hands on one.
zte blade has a nice exterior, probably one of my favorites so far . But the processor seems a little slow (clock wise), anyone have any experience with how well the Qualcomm MSM7227 competes with say a snapdragon or samsung hummerbird cpu?
id get a nexus one or desire, there not too expensive anymore and have ample power to keep up with technology for the next couple of years, the hero is good but its starting to show its age now, it depends what you want, the nexus one is better built imo but the desire has more ram and an optical trackpad instead of a trackball
Just remember if you do purchase a T-Mobile Nexus One - and you end up getting a data plan down the line.. your stuck on Edge forever while on AT&T's network.
There are AT&T Nexus One's out there.. but your going to be paying a premium.

Is the trackball like blackberrys dumb trackball? I hated that thing with a passion when I tried to use it (even though touch screen means I will rarely use it). I have never used a optical trackpad before. Is it like say running your finger on the bottom of a laser mouse? I know it is kinda bad analogy.

Yes, I have been looking around on craigslist and what not, t-mobile ones in mint condition run about $400, while ones bought straight from google run about $450, which I would want anyways so I don't have all the tmobile bloatware from the get go.

Dude... removing bloatware takes every bit of 10 minutes. I'm assuming that you're going to root anyways, so just save yourself $50.
So you can remove it? Did not know that. Yes I will root it, but I just wont our of the box because of a laziness factor lol. (atleast im truthful )

Easily, and the chances are that any custom ROM you flash will be already purged of bloatware.
The Nexus One is a great starter phone. I personally started with a cheap G1 I found on craigslist. The owner had bought a new phone and didn't know about modding and even after I told him he wasn't interested in doing it. After a while I traded up and got the Nexus One.
The good thing about the T-Mobile version of the N1 is that if you do decide to get data service, and you're okay with the EDGE speeds (slower than 3G), then you can pay the cheaper price for the data plan. I've heard from here and there of people with the AT&T version of the Nexus One having their phone automatically upgraded to the more expensive data plan because Google must have given them an updated IMEI list for the phones.
Well just a update, purchased a Desire HD. Waiting for it in the mail, I can't wait!

HP Touchpad price dropping to $99/$149 tomorrow!

Hey guys I saw no slickdeals that the price of the HP Touchpad is dropping 300 bucks tomorrow cause they dropped it! I called to confirm and its true, I bought 3 for the full price and they 100% guaranteed that I would be given credit when the price adjust tomorrow at 7AM EST.
Heres the Slickdeals thread:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3220862
You can either wait till tomorrow for the price drop or call in right now and pay full price and have it adjusted tomorrow morning. Some are saying the new price is live for the Academic shop but some people can't see it with .edu email addresses.
I have played with the tab in a store and I have to say for $99 this is one Hell of a steal.
Good luck.
Wow. I was expecting a liquidation, but this is remarkable. For browsing the web and random Document editing, this is an amazing price!
Does anyone know the hackability of this device? Do you think that, despite discontinuation, that the app market might become at least respectable (with xda involvement)?

I don't know about the hackability but I'll tell you this tab handles flash like a boss. Its the only one I've seen that can do 1080p youtube without a hitch. And I dunno, they are killing off the touchpad itself but they want to keep webOS alive, I don't really know what that means for webOS on the tab.

I'm DEFINITELY buying one and I'm sure ICS can be ported to it when the time comes since the source will be released for it. This is a SNAPDRAGON QUALCOMM CPU and GPU and HTC uses that for their CPU/GPUs so I don't see why it's not possible, someone would have to write a kernel from scratch though to make it smoother, just like how the HD2 has Android, but it's not perfect since it's not using it's own kernel. If someone actually takes the time to unlock the bootloader(if it isn't already unlocked) and write up a kernel for it and port ICS to it, this tablet can be badass ;D $99 Android Tablet with ICS pl0x.

Got one for $90. I mean, at that point I couldn't resist. Heck, at worst I feel like if I use it, dont like it, I can still flip it for a tiny profit on craigslist or ebay.
Im really hoping for an android port. The specs on this tab are actually quite good. Im probably going to end up keeping it regardless. I'll probably just end up using it for bedside web-browsing, movies, and music.
There's a killing to be made by porting android to this thing. thousands of people just picked up this thing on slickdeals (there are literally over 11k browsing right now). I know tons are willing to donate (im good for 10$-20$ myself depending on quality and progress)

[Q] What to do with old phone?

Alright, I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100T and was immensely impressed. I had the option of getting a Galaxy S3, but it looked abit ugly in my opinion
What's happened now, is that I have a spare Acer Liquid Metal that I use as a door-stopper and paperweight. I was wondering, is there anything cool that I can do with it apart from selling it?
It doesn't have too high specs, after all, I did get it for $128 AUD. The basic specs are the following:
-800Mhz Single Core Scorpion
-Adreno 205 GPU
-800x480 screen
On top of that, it's rooted and has t&l metal 2.3.6 with TechnoLover's kernel running on top of that.
Comment on what you think I'd be able to do with it, thanks
i will be sell it and change other one or bue a new phone

Try a website like gazelle.com
Or recycle it at a Staples or Best Buy
There are also a lot of devs that can use old phones as test platforms when developing apps. I'd recommend finding some projects you'd like to support and ask the dev if they'd like to have your old phone for testing on.
Consider converting it into an mobile audio player
I loaded up an old smartphone with mp3 files, including music and audiobooks, and paired it with a motorola roadster portable speaker (around $50-$70). I then dropped my satellite radio subscription, so now, when I'm out and about, I'm able to listen to just the music I want to hear, with no commercials, come-ons, or monthly fees - including data overage fees resulting from streaming content from the internet. I originally stopped using the smartphone because it was a lousy phone. Makes a very good in-car audio player, though.

Sell it, or donation it to a project you will could use it , you could install linux on it and get a full pocket computer! (See my project in sig) or use it as some form of controller if you have devices that can use it (many smart devices etc support this)
Sell it would be best unless you wan to save it for a spare! The price shld fetch you some accessories or something for your current phone!

just sell it. simple solution
Sell it on ebay

you can give those who need a phone or sell in ebay
Root it, put an awesome rom on it, install all your apps and stuff you use regularly and keep it as a back up phone. You never know when yours will break or go missing, its ALWAYS a good idea to have a back up phone that already has all your stuff on it... Good rule of thumb would be to add any new apps and phone numbers to this phone once a month, just in case. You may need to run somewhere while flashing a new rom to your GSII, so you can just throw your sim in this phone and your good to go! So my vote says keep it as a backup.
I always keep a spare device or two, just in case something goes wrong in my primary device. Also, I can lent it to friends in need of a cellphone until they get a new.
i would sell it as well..

On top of that, it's rooted and has t&l metal 2.3.6 with TechnoLover's kernel running on top of that.
Comment on what you think I'd be able to do with it, thanks

I have an old HTC Incredible with no phone service that I use in place of my iPod Touch and as a VoIP phone with Google Voice and Talkatone on WiFi.

Just keep it? You'll never know what kind of information people can recover from you phone storage.

I always keep a spare device or two, just in case something goes wrong in my primary device. Also, I can lent it to friends in need of a cellphone until they get a new.

+1 You never know when you may need a device to help out someone in need... who knows, it may even be YOU! =]

Next phone upgrade?

Okay I hope I am allowed to post this in general, and I hope no one gets offended by anyway lol
I am going off to college (UCSD) this fall. I am considering buying an iPhone just for the fact that I want a completely functioning phone as my daily driver and I don't want to find myself trying to solve issues during school.
I am asking for some opinion.
I love android and flashing, but I find myself using a lot of time doing so, I dont want to do this and get distracted while I dorm in college and have other things to worry about.
I guess my question is, should I consider a new iPhone, or are the new phones like the s4 just as reliable? I know I'm going to get a variation of opinions, but that's what I want I really cannot make up my mind lol.
It just seems to me that all the apps are more reliable to use on an iPhone since they are developed for that specific device etc.
Thanks in advance for your opinion

the iPhone 5 is great device if you find one on a good price... has LTE for T-Mobile...
the only drawback si the there will b a new iPhome comming out in the nexts 3 month, so if you buy it brand new on a full price, you will lose bout $300 in value by that time...
might consider finding one on craigslis for $400sh, but be carefull, as i just got burned w a lemon last week...
bought a NOTE 2 for $360... used it for 4-5 days and got reported stolen... no service...
going to sell it for $300sh now for use on another Network, and take the loss...
back to the Blaze for now...

Have you considered running just stock on the blaze? If you want real, real stable/reliable, stock is the way to go for this phone. No need to troubleshoot issues, wipe davlik, catlog and that kind of stuff. This also applies to all smartphones. Part of flashing a non-stock rom is assuming that nothing is ever 100% stable, but can be sometimes. Most roms are 99% stable, but it seems to be that the time you REALLY need your phone for something you discover that 1% bug
Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see what Thomas will bring with all his hard work on CM 10.1. But I just haven't ever been happy with standby battery life on CM10/CM10 based roms. That and wifi calling is a must in my basement (where my home office is).
Back on topic... regardless which device you get running stock will ensure 100% stability, that or running a stock themed/debloated/deodexed rom is also a safe way to go. Not to knock iPhones (they aren't that bad), but my father in law seemed to always be having issues with his iPhone 4. He kept losing his contacts. He just got a 5 a few days ago so I don't know how that will fare... I personally have over $100 in apps from the play store, and I don't want to have to buy apps all over again... soo.... My next phone will be a nexus 5 (got 4 bills saved already!) :good::victory: Just a few months to wait!
So yeah, I would recommend a nexus 5. Just wait 2 1/2 more months... rumors have it dropping in October. Current rumors have it with a snapdragon 800 (double the graphics perf from the 600 and modest clock bump), and a Nikon camera... drool....
yeah im looking to buy a Nexus 5 aswell, but i dont think it will have the latest procesor
its a mid tier phone, i personaly will be just happy w a LTE chip and timely updates...
whatever else they can cramp over my expectations its a plus
PS the Note 3 will be a beast... rumored to have the new flexible displays that you can not break and that latest procesor w 3GB RAM and LTE-A ...
Nexus 5? New Nexus Phone "the Moto X" will be most likely shown on August 1 as Motorola has already sent invitations. I have yet to see the Nexus 5.
