Official Galaxy S GingerBread coming in mid April [engadget] - Captivate General

We hope to see the working Ginger bread 2.3 soon on our Cappy.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/07/gingerbread-update-for-samsung-galaxy-s-to-start-rolling-out-in/

Hopefully, but knowing samsung and AT&T.
I'll be delayed.

Hopefully the Dev's can find the "tattle" feature and remove it. The one that tells the carriers if we are rooted and possible tether. I rarely use the tether, but I'm not paying $20 extra a month to tether a MAX of 50-60MB's every few months.

Sorry, I meant to say that DEVs might be able to port it for Captivate. Most of us were already running i9000 based froyo and still running.

I'm not sure it works this way. They do a simple bandwidth screening, and if you are unlimited and are using up gigs and gigs of data, then for iPhones only they check if the packets look like tether packets
They don't just screen every packet through every phone to see if it looks like a tether packet

What makes this so funny is SamsungJohn's latest twitter post:
We are doing the best we can to deliver Froyo/2.2 for Fascinate owners.

Isn't this announcement regarding the European release? Not really sure it applies to U.S. users; we might be waiting a little longer.

When this releases the source code probably isn't much more than a month behind. From that we should get Captivate ports

Did we really need another thread about this?

Sent from the future.
I await all ROMs with gingerbready Greatness!!
And to be honest, I thought we'd be a little ways into Jan before we seen the source code. Glad it took just 1 day after the Nexus S release. Now, the many-months wait for OEMs to get Official updates out to the devices =\
if that was sent from the future, that comment must mean that you are afraid for us because something is WRONG with gingerbread because you would have KNOWN about this already! LOL so HOW IS IT?!?!?
Yay!

Yet still no official 2.2 for us.... awesome.

How did GB source C drop before FroYo????????
If you are referring to what I posted, it was source code
For the Nexus S kernel Android version 2.3
And yes, pretty cute we have available source code for a new
OS before we seen a piece from any Android 2.2 source code for our Epic

I think the million dollar question is what are the predictions for an official 2.2
rom for our Epics? jk but I think after samsung and sprint gets ahold of it first.
Otherwise it would be another AOSP like cyanogen.
I've got a related (and hopefully not stupid) question regarding the process.
So, I know we're waiting for the 2.2 kernel source for our epics, obviously.
Generally, what's the process in between Google dropping a version's source, and it being released (by samsung) to us? This is not a complaint-- I'm really just curious how it works.

I know someone can explain better than I can.
Google drops the stock rom. This wont run on our phones without drivers, and support for specific hardware for our device. Then you have Sprint carrier modifications like VVM, ota updates, 4G and other configured apps. After all the work is done, developers can go back and modify things to their liking.
Otherwise you would have a from the ground up like CM,
where its a lot of trial and error, getting the ROM to support hardware/software.

I'm no developer or expert, but i'd give it a week or two before we see a slew of ROMs, maybe less. Its great that Cyanogen has 4G working on the Evo, so cant wait for 4G-enabled CM6/7 for our Epics. As for an official 2.3 update from Samsung.... March is my earliest guess

I'd say we get official 2.2 updates in a few weeks. The leak is out, so they are probably just cleaning it up for release. The plain-jane (no custom ROM) leak works flawlessly on my phone tho.
At this point Noobnl is going to deliver faster than Samsung is on the Froyo. He's got CM pretty much done it seems. Whenever Cyanogen's done with gingerbread source for CM7(im presuming) noobnl will hopefully start on that as well.
I bet that the hardware drivers for 2.2 will work with 2.3, sounds like 2.2 to 2.3 is a lot less of a change than 2.1 to 2.2, but I could be wrong.

For Samsung it's more rational for them to use their dev's time to spend on making new working firmware for new devices that are debuting at CES and to ready the firmware for those devices.
Samsung's strategy has changed over the years and is now executing the mantra "first out the door with new technology." While this is great for those of us who like new toys, it's a set back when we want long term support for our new toys. If their R&D resources are tied up working out new firmware for the next gen, they lose focus on their current customers.
If you've kept up on the latest engadget, gizmodo, boy genius, etc etc news - you'll know there's a dual core super duper galaxy whatever chip coming out soon. That's where the resources are now. For a company that has been lagging behind in innovation for the last few years in the mobile area, this is their new direction... Innovate quickly and be the first to market. Support resources are but a second thought; overhead.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...uct-crisis-as-choi-tries-to-triple-sales.html might give you a better perspective of the company.
So if I am reading this right....
Once we have CM6 running on our epics it will be a lot easier for us to get Gingerbread installed; for that matter any new verisions?
Does this really need to be in the Epic section?

As with everyone else, i'll get in line for the popcorn. Can I get a diet coke too?
Never gonna happen. at&t didn't give a single **** about releasing froyo on the captivate with any kind of speedy schedule and that was when it was new, do you really think that they will be johnny on the ball to release an update for a phone that's according to them, is at the end if its life? No, they will just push new phones on us cause that's where they stand to make the most money. And who cares if they do anyway? How many froyo roms do we know and love that started out as "ports that still had quite a few bugs"

i believe geo was asking if the i9000 was beta or not.. as the article says that gingerbread is coming to the galaxy s line... i9000 is the galaxy and we HAVE it.. right? no? well kinda!
the JVH/B that we already have for i9000 are the samsung firmwares from the firmware site open source versions.
NOW it is going to hit the carriers and KEIS.... bloat and other crap! yay~
Does this mean the source would also be made available?
Not gettin my hopes up...
When has official anything for our specific device ever been that great? Everybody was so excited about official at&t froyo update, it finally came, and never did blow anything we already had out of the water. As far as I'm concerned the devs will probably have something better worked up by the time official 2.3 drops.
My 2 cents.

Still, what are the chances of a US Cellular ROM working on the Charge? We would still not have the RIL source, and the ICS build works fine otherwise.
Also, US cellular is known for using dated phones (for a much lower price, mind you). Their previous flagship was based off of the OG Atrix and Photon for AT&T and Sprint.

I would say very good. US cellular is CDMA like VZW is. From all accounts the phones are going to be the same.
The RIL source won't matter that much if we get totally working ICS radios now will it? Well it will for things like CM, but I am not thinking that way. I am think that this makes ICS stone cold done, not jellybean mind you, but just ICS.

The issue is that we aren't gonna get the radios. Google has flat out said that they legally can no longer release full source code on any CDMA phone.
assuming the aviator is as close to the charge....as the fascinate is to the mez/showcase then porting roms is pretty easy
just edits to apns, cdma carriers in system/etc, some build.prop edits and hacking up mms.apk and mmsprovisioning.apk (all of those just for sms/mms...rom will boot with data/calls as is)
since the aviator will get ics (under google's 18 months of updates) even if the charge doesnt, it should be pretty easy to port over
but really, i think the charge will get an ics update because i doubt samsung will spend a ton of money to make an update for a phone that might sell 1/20th as many units as the charge has (really little work on their end to make it compatible for the charge)
in fact id be surprised if the og sgs doesnt get ics now since the specs (screen and lte aside) are virtually identical from charge (which is essentially an lte og sgs)
now this coming from you makes me real happy......

I agree with all you started above till the last sentence.
Correct me if I'm wrong-
I've seen the update came out for Nexus S, was retracted and now owners are still waiting for the official release. A debloated ROM will probably run just fine on Charge, which you touched on in your previous post. That being said "Officially" I don't believe the charge will see ICS. I'm sure with your help along with JT and others, we will have it.

In regards to Verizon's upgrade list here; even though it isn't complete, I think it is ridiculous that carriers aren't more worried about getting their phones upgraded. I recognize that the manufacturers do the development, but you'd think that the carriers would try to light a fire under their ass.
Furthermore, I am rather upset that Verizon hasn't said anything about getting an HTC One phone.

Man I would love to be that optimistic. Unfortunately, I would bet cash money that even if they were to eventually upgrade the Charge to ICS, it wouldn't be until 4Q 2012 or later. In fact, I would be downright shocked if any of the phones they listed get ICS before 3Q.
By then, Jelly Bean will be just around the corner and ICS won't be enough anyway

Erm...in the email sent to me by Verizon, they said the Droid Charge is free until March 31,2012. It's a promotion they have going on.

Right, but why? My guess is to clear out inventory. They are no longer selling the Thunderbolt and the Revolution is free as well. With the launch of the New Droids (Fighter, Blade, Incredible 4G, etc.) coming soon, I think they're cleaning house. Once inventory is gone, I think we're EOL.
The silver lining? The Aviator doesn't even launch until next month. It will be CDMA/LTE, so it could have the same RIL. I think Samsung will have to update it to ICS, so this means there's hope that our devs can port even if Verizon refuses to release an ICS official OTA.
It's been EOL in my mind ever since they announced that we're not getting ICS.
I was in a Verizon store yesterday. I picked up 2 charges and, without me even asking, the rep openly admitted that ICS is coming to the charge.

They never actually announced anything, one way or the other.
Don't listen to reps. Consider them to be like car salesman. They'll say what they have to in order to make the sale.

Yeah we had "reps" saying when we would be getting the GB update... and they were all wrong.

this statement is
facts
pure facts

Gb update I'd believe, but ICS I don't see that happening anytime soon. If it even happens. Rumors are rumors, not facts. Until a official statement from Verizon or Samsung is released, it will still be a rumor.
Edit: On a side note that doesn't mean we wont get it seeing as JT is progressing with ICS on charge. (Beta 2 is released) It just wont come from Verizon imo.

I do not know if this was referencing my post or not, but this was after the sale and there was no previous mention of anything relating to ICS.
I do not know if what he said was fact or not, nor do I really care, but I found it odd that it was mentioned out of the blue, like it was some new info that seemed important.

Reps often times no less than the average user of a phone enthusiast forum, and those that do know more tend to just sit and look at news sites. They are not high enough up the food chain to get any info about updates until shortly before release at the earliest. That would go for anyone working in any store, managers included. They don't provide the information until the last minute to avoid any critical issues stopping an update.

Yeah, but the issue is that Samsung's RIL does not fall under GPL and does not need to be open sourced. So, they're not obligated to release source code and, to this day, they have refused to do so.
JT may eventually get a working RIL for AOSP/CM9 use, and that would be great... But, having said that, it still won't be an RIL optimized for the Charge to the same extent that a RIL built with absolute knowledge of Samsung source code would be (please, correct me if I'm wrong here).
I think it would be absolutely absurd for the Aviator to be US Cellular's "flagship" device (which it will be) if Samsung isn't planning to build an official version of ICS (complete with TouchWiz and their GB-esque ICS interface). If the RIL is built for CDMA/LTE, then it's possible that devs may be able to port the Aviator's stock ROM over to the Charge on Verizon and modify that base into an InfinityROM, Eclipse, or TweakAviator ROM. Not 100% sure this will work with Samsung, but I've seen it before with HTC devices--with the Eris, a lot of the ROMs were ported CDMA Hero ROMs. This would provide kernels, ROM bases, and modems all specifically designed to work in unison. In my opinion, this will result in extremely stable ICS ROMs (as compared to a reverse-engineered RIL for AOSP/CM9). No?
reps dont know anything about anything. we're never getting ICS unless IMnuts, Nitro, JT or one of the other developers give us a hack. Ill prob switch over the GS3 well before that happens (not cuz of the developers, cuz of samsung and verizon, the developers all kick ass!)

If ICS is released with the aviator, it may be possible seeing as their the same device. But that is a big if. Samsung should just release the RIL source. We already know they suck at coding. Why hide it?

Why go Samsung? By the time SG3 comes out, Samsung's not gonna update it to Jellybean and your gonna say "ill get the SG4"...Better off getting an HTC phone with a Samsung Screen..HTC good about releasing source and has good development. Although Samsung has thinner devices.

One can argue, if their code is suck, why you want it then? or if you want to ask some one for something and you called them suck, do you deserve to have it?

Honestly, I've had three moto phones and while not having full access to flashing kernels and not having a real recovery sucks, their hardware is insane.
