how about... torrent? - General Topics

How many times you opened a mediafire/megaupload/any other uploading site and had to wait many many hours to download something as a free user, and then, maybe when you just are above 90%, it just interrupts?
well, **** happens, we all know that, and the main problem is that storage sites don't allow the use of a download manager. And that becomes a problem when the site you're referring to caps the download speed at like 20-25 KB/s and you're downloading a very large file.
So i was thinking, couldn't it become a forum rule, or at least something strongly adviced, to post a torrent link for large files, let's say larger than 150MB?
I mean, we all are REALLY grateful to people who make all the tinkering possible, who provide us with blazing fast and stable ROMs or with nice apps, but sometimes it gets frustrating to download from those sites! Maybe posting a torrent link wouldn't cost them much, it's just a couple of minutes task and it could get very useful!
Thank you very much!

Hmm.... guess I don't see a problem with that...

you want something for free and you want the person offering up the item that is free to pay for fast downloading ???............ clueless and inconsiderate....

I remember writing an email to XDa about that way back in 2006,they said theyd look into it. Of course, back then there were lawsuits against the owners of the torrent sites. that shouldnt have been a problem for people distributing Roms since they didn't have copyright. We have plenty of seeders so the downloads will be fast and reliable.

.
Torrents are normally associated with warez
Thread closed
If anything to discuss please PM me

If torrents are used to post ROMS which don't contain warez of ANY SORT, it would be acceptable. If Any chef is interested in doing that they can take permission and get verified by a moerator/admin and post the link - but on a trusted torrent host.
Thread remains closed as we do not encourage discussion or use or torrens ( which we all know are majorly associated with WAREZ/pirated things ).

ROM(software?) Mirror: for torrent users(test).

Dear all,
I am in possession of a Kaiser and used some of the ROM's here. Now I am not a chef and prefer spending my time on other stuff. However I felled obliged giving a bit back.
Now I had an unused torrent-tracker on my website/server and was waiting to find something to put it to good use.
I am presenting a link to this Torrent-tracker for Firmwares/ROM's(if needed also some necessary CAB's).
http://tracker.homeip.net/tracker/
On the page there is a link/download for the client Utorrent v1.6.1 build 490. There is also a website(www.utorrent.com) with a way higher version, there is however some difference in opinion about versions above the v1.6.1 b490(discussions off topic).
This is however a test and will in the future depending more on the chefs willingness creating and uploading the .torrent and keeping secrets or sending me the ROM's and letting me do the work.
I will 1st put my effort in the Kaiser forum but if this idea is popular enough and requests will come in I will move a level up making the tracker available for the other forums with their ROM's.
I have already made a start with some of the popular ROM's and I will add more and more over time and naturally on request.
It will save a lot of time searching upload websites.
Reactions are welcome good or bad
For the Chefs:
Dear hardworking freaks if you like this idea and want to join this project take a short look at the following ways of sharing your hard work with all the other freaks.
1)- 1 have setup an FTP server and upload account for the Chefs. PM me for the link, user name and password.(all you have to do is upload your next ROM and I will do the rest)
2)- It is possible to upload the torrent to the tracker by your self. Again PM me for the link, user name and password.(you will have to create the TORRENT, upload it and share it.)
good thought, but
I like the good idea, but think that members will still want to download from the chef's website. Reason being, the chef's website will have a description and pics of their roms as well as easy updates & and discusion.
Additionally, the DL speed max'd at 24kbs, and the dl would have taken 45 minutes, versus the less than 5 minutes from the chef's choice of file server.
Again, I think this is a good idea, but without the army of seeders and a large following of members to dl the roms... good idea, but maybe not.
Great Idea!
Actually sounds a great idea in theory. Ive already tested out a torrent version for ppc but took too long.
The points STU makes are correct and I agree. I guess the idea would be great in theory and definately handy if using a TILT via WIFI. I found myself stuck without a PC / Laptop recently. I can imagine a scenario like this whereby the software COULD come in handy especially if the speed was acceptable on wifi.(lack of seeders to begin with?)
Good Luck and I for one would like to hear of how you get on with this project.
Best Wishes
Nick
@Stu_Can_Sam,
I welcome any argument and have to agree on some points like i am not sharing with a high upload. But you already pointed out the force/weakness of P2P-torrent is the many seeders.
For an idea that hardly started and placing judgment is a bit premature.
For any idea something can be good or bad after living it a couple of months not just after a day. Look at chefs cooking their ROM's, at 1st they are not always great but using the forum and people adding positive feedback makes their ROM's really great after a couple of versions.
So give it some time, people have to know it and getting used to the idea, and reading around in this community i guess people are not just "hit and runners" and will share their downloaded stuff way longer. We are not talking about movies of 4GB here so storage is surely not an option.
Very interesting....
I hear and feel what the others have said, but this could also serve as a way for others to "see" what others are using and potentially help to eliminate all the "What Rom are you using?/What Rom is best?/Who is the best Chef?/What Radio is best?/etc...." threads that keep popping up and polluting the forum. It could also potentially serve as the "perfect" alternative for all those that complain that they cannot use 1 file sharing service or another for X reason.
Of course, as with any torrent-based d/l, the overall speed would be determined by the seeders, but for some of us, this would be a great way to assist with information sharing. I myself have 5 PC's at home that serve as a mini farm when i am not at home or during the wee hours of the morning, when the network traffic in my area is lowest.
The only major downside that I could potentially see is that here in the states, more and more ISPs are moving toward bandwidth caps and penalizing those who go over their limits. I should know as I work for one. If a ROM were to become REAL popular, then i could see where this would get sticky, but other than that I would see no long term problem.
What I would suggest is adding a link back to the particular thread or post that the ROM originated from so that users can see what they are downloading or find out what is included in each ROM, with a heading of "Technical support and FAQs found here..." or something similar.
That's enough from this peanut gallery... NEXT!!!!

[TORRENT] Eugene373's AOSP 2.4 - Eclair ROM on Bittorrent

To moderators: Where should I put / start a thread announcing torrent/ magnet link availability of a ROM?
I'm seeing posts in the forums from people having trouble with the various filesharing sites. I've had some time-wasting grief there myself in recent days with some the ROMs.
For anyone tired of the speed-choking fileshare sites (like...they slow down....and then stop completely 43MB into a 45MB file), I'm seeding this ROM on bittorrent.
Caveat: My uplink is only 110KBytes/second, but if several people download then seed these files, the cumulative transfer rate should be nice and quick....
The primary torrent is here: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5286019
If you don't like The Pirate Bay for some reason, then Google "AOSP24.zip" and "torrent". Most other torrent sites pick up a new torrent from any other torrent site within 24 hours.
If Pirate bay is down or blocked, then here is the DHT Magnet Link, Cut / paste it into your bittorrent client. You don't need the torrent file.
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:xumhprzuxjc3ge4xjlondzwt47ztmt p3&dn=AOSP24.zip&tr=http%3A%2F%2Ftracker.openbittorrent.com%2Fannounce
(There are two extraneous spaces in this magnet link (between "mt p3" and "bitto re", XDA's editor did it...I've tried to remove them).
Good idea. Torrents can be good LOL.
I think you should probably still upload to places like mediafire. Just cause torrents need seeders and when you run out it sux.

I know what you mean! I *hate* that!
I leave a torrent up until a torrent hasn't been touched for 3/4 weeks. Then I take it down on the basis no one wants it.
These files have limited shelf-life. In a month few people will want THIS file. They'll be on to the next one.
I would find a less dodgy link to be honest mate.
If it had not been thorugh thepiratebay's trackers I would have helped you seed for a while.
Eugene373 AOSP 2.4 - Eclair ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589344 Soooo.. Why would we need a torrent when the rom itself is 2 posts up? Also.. Me thinks eugene, who barley bothers with these whiny forums, isnt gonna be to happy about a torrent link for his rom.
very fast, just downloaded at 700k/s.
meh, no reason to complain about it being torrented... although I would just give the magnet link, as linking to piratebay.org is probably not kosher, as they obviously have pirated material too... I'm not even using that rom, but gonna seed 30:1

As far as I know, openbittorrent.com isn't a "pirate bay" tracker. It's just a tracker. Not sure it matters.
Pirate Bay is just a convenient site to load the torrent onto. *This* content isn't pirated and I don't care about anyone else's.
If you google "aosp24.zip" and "torrent", within 24 hours most of other torrent sites will have picked up the torrent.
AndroidSPIN FAST Direct Download
I've placed a mirror of this ROM on AndroidSPIN as I see people are having issues downloading from 4shared.
Head here to download Eugene Eclair 2.4.
Enjoy.
Get your Seed on, lol.....
androidspin ftw!!
the forums are kinda inactive tho...
I'll be seeding, I prefer a speedy torrent over those filesharing sites any day of the week.

ROM chefs who need hosting

I've created a new high performance hosting site for WinMo and Android custom roms. It is still however in beta but I expect that it will be finalised before the end of June
The servers (Yes I mean that in plural ) that are being used are located in Dublin, Ireland (My hometown) so as to ensure brilliant speeds for both the US and EU. This service is of course free however there are certain rules that must be followed to preserve the integrity of the site. For example, I will not be allowing full scale discussion like here on XDA to make it easier for people to navigate ROMs.
In any case, when you host a ROM on my infrastructure you get both regular HTTP download and bittorrent download as a backup so your ROMs will always be available. No more rapidshare! Devs get unlimited space for their ROMs and those with more than five distinct ROMs get their own subforum to release their ROMs on. Again, I would like to stress that the primary aim of this site will not be ROM development as is XDA or MoDaCo but it's aim is to be sooner or later the comprehensive database for custom ROMs on both Android and Windows Mobile.
In any case, the site's URL is http://www.smartroms.com I hope you do find it useful, if you encounter any bugs or the like please send me a pm and I will look into it
Nice idea. Good luck with it. I'm registering just now!

Can you let me know if the registration page redirects you correctly? I noticed a few times that it kept hanging on redirecting during testing but it disappeared after I made a few seemingly irrelevant code changes.
Anyways, give me feedback!
It redirected me fine. The only tiny thing I'd say is that once you register and you are redirected to the login page, instead of your username being pre-filled, it puts your email address in.
Some less 'savvy' people might stumble on that and wonder why they can't log in.
As I say it's no biggy but you know what some users are like

That's odd, must have a look at that, thanks for letting me know
No bother. It might be a PHPbb thing. I used to run a PHPbb board many moons ago. They have changed a bit since then. lol
I really like the idea.
Thank you for providing a fast platform
Nece one, will check out soon. Thanks!
Sounds great, Roms with *****ing
Moved as not ROM Dev.
B.t.w already a hosting solution http://www.xdaroms.com/
Appreciate the offer and contribution.
Yup! A central place for finding ROMs should be brilliant.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general
here's your feedback:

good work man
Re: ROM chefs who need extra hosting
that could be very good!

that's really bad... for a hosting site
I've been working all night migrating the server to vBulletin instead of the phpbb system it is now. That's why it's slowing down from time to time. I thought it would be safer to work through the night as less people would be accessing the site but I suppose I thought wrong
In any case the site is hosted across multiple servers for performance and redundancy reasons so when the site is finalised there should never be any speed issues.

ROM makers: Want a different host for your files?

For the last 6 months I've been hosting files for developers in the Eris section. I made the site to people wouldn't have to use all that MultiUpload crap, got sick of the waiting 60 seconds to download a file, entering a verification code, etc etc.
Anyways, the site's worked well. You can direct link to your files, upload everything via a simple web interface.
I just thought I'd offer the site to developers in other forums now.
http://android.grdlock.net
Anyways, if you're interested in using it to host your files, just make a username on the site real quick, shoot me a PM, and I'll give it upload permissions.
And no, this isn't an advertisement or anything. People in the Eris section have just liked using the website over MultiUpload, so I thought I'd offer to let other people use my bandwidth as well.

Sent from my phone... I think useing Tapatalk?

Just thought I'd offer my hosting to Hero users

As I typed this thread title I saw there's been two other posts in the last month or so about this, but oh well.
I've been hosting many various ROM's and kitchens for other phones for 7 or 8 months now. I know there's quite a big Hero following as well, so I just thought I'd throw it out there if anyone would like to host their files on my site instead of MultiUpload junk.
Anyways, site's in the sig, my email addy to get upload access is on the site. The whole site is setup just for hosting rom's. Uploading is really simple, etc. Plenty of speed (I max out my 30mbps connection at home whenever I download something from it myself), plenty of space, etc.
Mods: This isn't an advertisement for a site that would compete with XDA, it's solely a file host. I've already had approval in other phone sections. Just an FYI.

Awesome that you are providing this service to us. It is very appreciated.
BUT I did want to inform you when I sent you an email, it bounced back/denied it.

I'm betting if the email address is to his host then its because the DNS changes havent went into effect fully..
Yeah that's probably correct. I just moved to a better host over the weekend, so it's possible some smaller ISP's or mail servers still don't have the updated DNS records I suppose. If you want upload permissions feel free to send me a PM instead for the time being.
Whoops, nope, I broke my mail server when I changed a few settings yesterday apparently, and didn't realize it! lol... fixed now.
