SNS: half-assed digitizer? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
Not sure if anyone (although I hope so) has noticed this - but I kinda feel that the Nexus S digitizer (touch-sensitive layer between lcd and glass, built into SAMOLED screens) is a bit.. unresponsive at times..
I'm comparing to a HTC Desire HD - which, with CM7, is alot more responsive IMHO!
Hoping to hear your opinions on this
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

It seems fine for me though. Not sure why you are experiencing unresponsiveness. What kernel are you using?

If anything, it's TOO sensitive. You can actually register a press without touching the phone. Try it, move your finger ever so slowly towards a button, but make sure not to touch it. Eventually, when you're a couple millimeters away, it'll register a touch, even though no contact has been made.

i think he is describing the FREEZE problem some people are experiencing
by default SAMOLED display are SUPER sensitive, you do not even need to touch the screen, it's enough to just fly-by over the screen surface and you can activate something
it's actually too good for some people which wants to make them less sensible

Well, I might just've phrased my question the wrong way. I have the i9023 (SCLCD) version of the Nexus S - my girlfriend has an Xperia X10i and with that phone you can feel that the digitizer isn't keeping up with your finger.
I've used both an iPhone 4 and HTC Desire HD - both seem to 'track' my finger better on-screen.. Am I the only one? Damn, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to go see my doc

N1 screen calibration

I'm convinced that the screen is slightly out of calibration - but I can see no way to reset the calibration. (I'm ex WinMo!) - it must be in there somewhere - or do i need "an app for that".
Advice appreciated
G.
I was also thinking this. Unfortunately I still have not bought the phone yet, or I would of tried creating an app to test this theory. If a touch can be captured in x/y data, we could see what the problem is with the bottom row keys.

The more I use the phone, I'm starting 2 think that the screen is not so much out of calibration, but is very sensitive 2 the angle that U touch the screen. when I use 2 hands 2 use the phone, It seems 2 always respond correctly
cause my finger is touching straight down, but if I use 1 hand and try 2 reach
across the it responds off a lil at times. 2 solve this I put the phone 2 the end of my
fingers and secure it as far from my thumb as possible. awkward at first 4 me be it responds correctly when I do. Hope this is clear and helps U. I do have big hands though.

I might know what you are talking about. At times I can't slide home screens when using the phone with one hand and it can get very annoying, but I blame myself rather than this wonderful phone.
I also remember my wife using the phone while it was flat on the desk and it would not respond properly, but as soon as it was picked up and did the same procedures it would work properly. We were thinking that It may have something to do with the angle of the phone and our fingers on the screen. Dont really know I just know how to get it working.
Have you guys rooted and enabled multi-touch?
If not, are you sure this isn't to do with the lack of multi-touch. On my N1 I have the same problem when using it with one hand. And I've noticed it's because part of my palm sometimes touches the screen as I'm holding the phone. As theres no multi-touch it won't register what I'm selecting with my thumb until my palm stops touching the screen.
At first I suspected it was an issue with the screen responsiveness/calibration aswell. Because as you try and tap with your thumb a few times, eventually you move your palm and it works.
However, then I took a closer look everytime it happened, and noticed part of my palm was always touching the screen.
Obviously this doesn't happen when you use two hands as usually you will then hold the phone with your fingertips, not by wrapping your hand around it.

Dude, thanks for using your first post on us.
I think you are correct about the palm touching the screen. I have rooted and installed the modaco custom ROM, but I have not installed anything else for multi-touch. I will definitely look into this, thanks.

No problem.
Coming from an iPhone it was not something I ever thought about, so was quite releaved when I figured out why it was happening.
Was on here looking for widgets when I spotted this so thought I'd register and save you scratching your head trying to figure it out like I did.
Lots of stuff to love about the phone, especially the battery life which I'm really impressed with and hadn't even expected to be a plus point over the 3GS. This was just supposed to be a stop gap until the iPhone 4G, but I'm actually thinking I may stick with it now

If you stick with it then welcome to android.
If you don't then you just need to have fun with this phone.
I've been finding ways around the major niggles I had over the last couple of weeks. So it's looking promising that I won't be splashing out for another iPhone in June/July.
It helps that my brother has one and I've had some time to play with it and get everything the way I want it. Which is part of the reason I got it now. If it had been during a really busy period (work wise), i'd probably be back on the 3GS.

First 2 Days with the Sensation

Got my Sensation 2 days ago, and after the amount of *****ing I read on this forum I was a bit worried...
So here is my verdict:
The good:
- Camera issues (crashed on pic): NOPE
- Screen responsiveness issues: NOPE
- WiFi issues: NOPE
- Lag: NOPE, stop *****ing, this is more responsive than a Desire
- Great keyboard, I love the multi-language suggest
The bad:
- Reception is AWFUL. The Desire wins hands down. Nothing to do with death grip either, on the same network with Speed Test the Desire scores are double, seriously!
- The screen is a fingerprint attractor. How you do you guys clean the screen? Anyone using some antistatic coating? Can you recommend one?
I come from a Desire, compared to that this phone feels a lot better. Seriously.
To the people that said it doesn't feel like much of an update compared to the Desire: I really don't get you.

I've tried a lot of different things to clean the screen on my sensation and I've come to the conclusion that you can use a t shirt, a blanket, a napkin, a towel ect. Seriously this is the easiest screen on a touch screen phone to clean. A free rubs on my sleeve and its spotless. And with the gorilla glass you don't have to worry about scratching it. Enjoy your sensation

Wash your hands once in a while jeez......... j/k
I have the AUO screen (screen manufacturer makes no difference in the gorilla glass btw) and mine is definately succeptable to fingerprints, but they are easier to wipe off than they are to acquire.
Glad to see more threads with people actually singing the phones praises and saying that not everyone suffers from these issues. So many people report problems, but very few report when everything goes fine. So as we all know this means anyone coming into the forum just sees lots of issues, it's easy to forget that it's only a few people sufering from these, and only the ones suffering seem to add to the threads that have been opened anyway.
Thanks for the good news
Coming from the dell streak, I have to say I love this phone, it is way better than the streak. Mind u if the streak had sense 3.0, then I might have a different opinion LOL.
Ok the reception has issues (random ones) but that's not that big a problem,
Love the HTC widgets, its great to see manufacturers like to have a polished interface that is very useable straight out the box. That said would be even better if they could be re-sizeable. (couldnt believe how bad stage was) its great you don't have to down load apps to get the phone the way u want it, just wish I could get a refund now on those paid ones lol
Before mine arrived I had picked up on some of the negative posts and was a bit concerned, but everything works perfect. HTC put this in a 5 incher n I'll buy one 2morrow as I miss the steaks real estate but size isn't everything lol.

[Q] Previous Nexus One users

I've had the N1 for a long time now. My biggest complaint that I can't deal with anymore is the touch screen. I've been eyeing the Sensation for awhile now. For those of you that upgraded from the N1 did you regret it? What are you're thoughts on the Sensation compared to the N1. Other than the obvious unlocked boot loader.
I've heard there are touch screen issues are these as severe as the N1's?
The nexus one had touchscreen issues?
If you used to fingers and crossed axis it would get confused left to right making it almost impossible to play games using virtual controllers. Intermittantly they will wig out and lose touch screen calibration. You would touch one part and it would read it almost a half inch off. Only work around for the calibration is to lock the screen than unlock it. This is what's driving me nuts.

lawl.
Anyway, I came from a nexus one and I haven't had any touchscreen issues with my sensation. Personally im very happy with the phone so far. The only complaint I have so far is I really miss my trackball notifications, and of course the locked bootloader (but in time the second will change). Other then those, I cant really think of anything else.

yeah, the sensation has proper multitouch too, no more cross axis issues.
I had the awesome nexus one with very few issues and I haven't had any touchscreen issues with my Sensation! Just some lag in Sense...
I have since given my cherished n1 to my wife. She just wants my games lol....
Yes the touchscreen works finally but besides that I would wait until the bootloader is unlocked. I jumped in because of the 148 price at wally mart. Compared to what I had initially paid for the N1, I think upgrading to this baby is worth it for the price.
Do I miss my N1? Sure do, like the others said, trackball alert was a big thing for me. I miss looking across the room to see if I had missed a call or not from my charger. Also miss the weekly MIUI updates. Since the sensation, I haven't updated miui and I heard the lockscreen has been changed a bit from the normal ones. Makes me want to grab the n1 and start flashing the sucker....maybe just out of withdrawal lol....
The positives is that the phone looks and sounds great. Besides the low speaker volume in speakerphone mode and some other issues like the gallery and video quirks some users have come across. Do not get me wrong, I do NOT regret this phone at all. I just wish the s-off comes already lol.

What is the fix for poor touch screen response on the Triumph?

Hello,
I am convinced that something is wrong with the Triumph. I searched for "keyboard" and "response" in the thread titles but got nothing.
Basically, the screen doesn't register my touches consistently. Is this something that is fixable by a software update, or is it faulty hardware? It's almost like I type too fast for the Triumph. But when touching a link, it often doesn't register, either, and it's not localized to any particular area of the screen. Slowing down my typing seems to help, but this is making the phone in my opinion, unusable. I have no reason to believe that I got a faulty unit.
What is the fix for this problem, and sorry if I missed the answers somewhere in the forums.

No, I have not, but I have thought about it. I've heard conflicting reports about whether that helps or not. In the past, I have not noted these screen protectors to be causing the problem. Can anyone speak with authority about whether removing the screen protector solves the response issues? It's a one-way procedure, because there's no way that I'll be able to get that screen protector applied as perfectly as it was at the factory.
Thanks

I can't speak with authority, but I can speak based on personal experience. It made a HUGE difference for me. And no, I haven't had any scratches on the screen nor have I had any problems since I removed it.
I can't say but I have notices that when my available RAM falls below 50 mb that the touch becomes less responsive, that and cold fingers.

The touch screen does lag, regardless of the screen protector. Its most apparent to me when opening the app drawer; it's hard to get the screen to roll. I think it's a combination of literally cold fingers as well as a sort of metaphorical coldness of the device itself; it seems that the lag effect diminishes as the device settles into its groove after prolonged use. I notice the lag when the ROM is 'fresh.'
I am on my 2nd T and they both exhibit the quirk. LPP and the new ADW seem to help her work it out. Perplexing little devices on an intentionally-attenuated redheaded step-network, fer sure, but virtually unbrickable, and oh my black jesus do i ever love me my $25/month, contract-free ultimateness.
I've spent a lot of time trying to resolve this issue in the TG-Reloaded CM7 ROM. Updating & rewriting the bi041p touchscreen driver in the kernel. I'm finally ready to just say it's a hardware problem, maybe a grounding issue. The interrupt sometimes just doesn't trigger reliably.
Well they're are two things you can do it increase the touch screen sensitivity, the first way would be to flash ROM or a kernel that has reworked drivers that are supposed to help touchscreen sensitivity a little. The next thing you could do that I think would greatly improve touchscreen sensitivity would be to take of the factory installed screen protector as it is very thick and low quality.

Anything i need to know?

Hey, I just bought this phone, I can't wait for it to arrive, but i just wanted to ask is there anything i need to know?? Any bad issues with this phone? I am going to root and install a custom rom at some point in the near future (if i get round to it).
I'm so excited at this phone is a huge upgrade for me... my last phone was the LG GT540
No issuses with phone othe than speaker not loud as my old phone which I's due to 2.3 which can be fixed once you flash.a custom rom don't keep it stock flash and enjoy cause there's some.really good roms out there that help battery last longer and make the phone prettier to look at. I like coredroid roms but theres also nice rooms that don't use sense ui which was nice to just youtube stuff.

Bluetooth sucks. Its a design flaw, don't expect good bt performance with this phone. Other than that its great.
For me, and I've heard from others, there is really only 2 things that bother me.
1.) My phone squeaks when you squeeze the bottom part, no idea why.. it's 100% brand new few days old.
2.) When unlocking by moving the ring up, I usually have to touch and drag it 3 times or so until it finally moves...
Otherwise the phone is awesome! The battery can get very hot while gaming though, you can really feel it, I rooted my phone, and it's overclocked so when I play a game for 10+ mins it gets so hot it almost feels like im touching a metal pole that has been in 100 degree heat for an hour.
Please hit thanks if I helped you! Just takes a click

It'll always happen as the case is separate from the phone itself. Mine creaks but I really couldn't care less
Mine doesn't creak nearly as much as it used to. So far I have no problems. I did notice the smallest amount of dust particles under the screen but it's literally almost impossible to see. However some people have posted some truly terrible pictures on here showing a crazy amount of dust.
This really is a superb phone.

First off, this is a good phone. But, unfortunately there is a couple of things wrong with it
I have come in direct contact with 5 different Sensations. Here's my experiences:
1. One of them had dust under the screen - I believe this is not an issue with new Sensations.
2. Two had a lousy power button - It becomes too soft and hard to press on some models. Lousy build quality there.
3. Two had the touchscreen issue - This is a serious one, but we have it fixed here on XDA... For the most part. Again, build quality?
4. Three creaked when pressed - My 5 year old nokia felt better under pressure. This is fixable with a larger battery.
5. Screens varied significantly - Don't know which screen I'd pick... Some had better viewing angles, some better contrast, or sharpness, or whatever...
6. Sense lagged more than I'd like on all of them - Maybe I want the impossible? No lag on my 1.5Ghz while scrolling through home screens? :|
7. WiFi death grip - I can live with this one.
I probably went into more detail than I should... Sorry
It's a good phone for the most part. I just expected way more from HTC (and for my money) and now I'm a bit disappointed...
