[Q] Samsung Jack i637 - Use with Linux - General Questions and Answers

Ok, I got a Samsung Jack from AT&T (first smart phone ) ... but there's a problem: I primarily use Linux, and ... prefer not to boot into the XP partition on my HD unless absolutely necessary. I've yet to find anything for Linux that will allow *direct* access to my phone's FS, or even allows me to sync properly (short of SynCE ... which doesn't want to work for me thus far ). So in short, I can't back up my device right without running my fingers ragged trying to indirectly place it on my microSD card via the phone itself!
Does anyone know of any solutions, or at least ones that will work through WINE?
Additionally ... is there a version of DosBOX that will run on non-touchscreen devices like mine? I specifically avoid them, as they tend to not work well for me.

Did I post this in the wrong forum, or does no one know how to answer my questions? Any suggestions would be quite welcome …

The Apple iphone-New files for our wizards

is it possible to dump the iphone OS for our wizards?
can you dump mac software on a pc and have it work? -- answer to your question and mine is no.
but we can create similar software -- search for "iContacts" and "TouchFlo" in this forum.
I love the htc touch
I dont want the whole OS on my wizard. I would like to try the Safari browser.
OMG .. you seriously asked ..
You're Damn Right I Ask!
Thats how we learn, we read and we ask questions that we dont have a answer to, yet. A lot of people are scared to ask questions on this forum, but not me buddy. Now stick to the question, can we extract some files from the iphone such as the Safari browser and put them on our wizards?
nope, sorry you cant, the system is totally different.

Wow man, that post helped me so much! I think that many other people will agree that that is totally on topic and is giving out a lot of information.
(Can the crap, why is there need for such useless posts?)
Flames...
Don't embarass those who are willing to ask a simple question that only requires a simple answer. If argue about it, argue about it simply, not obnoxiously. Giving our cackles and asking if this person is serious is pretty much lame in the case of forums.
Be polite... I like XDA Developers 'cause we're all polite here...

Well don't you realize that if we can't even fully port TouchFlo's finger gestures to devices such as the Hermes yet that it would be similarly not possible to port Safari, and/or the iPhone OS?
Why do you want Safari in Windows Mobile?
Its a good question actually - as far as I recall the iPhone is based on an Xscale core. Most WM devices are based on similar xscale cpu's so *if* the iphone was running Windows Mobile of some sort yes by all means rip away and run on your device. However since it runs OSX 'mobile' it would be like trying to get your fridge software to run on your tv - no go in any environment. On top of that I don't think you can even get to the system files to copy anything from the system?!
The one way to *possibly* do it is to join the Linux dev project for your phone and then try getting a Linux version of Safari running on your mobile..

You've got a point there. What I think he REALLY wants is the "turn the phone sideways and the phone goes into landscape" feature. LOVE the phone in your signature!

Best Windows Mobile Universal Remoteware today?

Hi All,
Has anyone tried out all the major vendors still around?
I don't want to fork out for all of them...
About to try the package that comes with the CF IR booster called 'ultramote'.
However I believe there's others which are prolly better...
If I upgrade to the latest rom (6.5.x?) will they still work?
I also have something "roughly" like this visualised... (see attached .txt)
I have an old Axim X50v which android is being ported to atm...
But progress is slow & ultimately limited, so I may have to find a better supported device soon.
Any thoughts/ideas/advice greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Jed
Come on... Any thoughts on this anyone?
I'd be really interested in hearing opinions!
Cheers
UR title sucks. What's UR? User remote, or something like that? I don't really understand the first post, and am not in the mood to download the text file. I may not be alone.

And now that you better understand what I was laying out...
Any thoughts/opinions?
Thanks
Guys, can anyone help me out here?
All the best,
Jed
Ohh i get it you want a remote for pda. Gotcha ... IR is not included with HTC devices after the titan II.
Um, no...
If you look at my "rough" diagram (attached) ...
I'm hoping to devise a device that acts a central controller for consumer electronics & home automation.
So far the most promising solution I've found is this...
http://www.openremote.org/display/orb/Boss+Overview
You don't have to use their reference hardware but something low power/profile like it would be ideal.
I was thinking of integrating the entire thing into my existing HTPC/PVR but I'm not sure yet, it might be best to have dedicated machine.
To run this software it's critical one has JRE + Apache Tomcat installed/configured properly.
I'd in turn probably run this software on top of Ubuntu or LinuxMCE.
This controller would be able to send/receive via;
Internet, Wifi, Ethernet, IR, X10, some proprietary RF, & numerous other HA/CE related protocols.
A critical part of this system is a hand-held (x50v) that interfaces nicely with the controller.
This hand-held would ideally also have IR integrated, but it's not imperative as Wifi would be used mostly.
However...
In the short term I want to use my hand-held (x50v) as the 'central controller' for various devices using its IR.
Hence the basis for my original post....
I'm interested in other peoples ideas, have you tried something similar?
Have you played with a platform that's better (in your opinion) than openremote?
Or perhaps you know of a better hware/sware combo for the hand-held?
Cheers,
Jed
Well I've done some investigations and Linux/android support is just too limited and prolly will remain that way to bother with Linux on the x50v.
So it'll have to be x50v + WM + app <---> HA controller device <---> end devices
Longer term I'll have to get something like the nokia n900 (maemo based) or at least something with good potential for Linux support.
So it'd be cool to get a few more thoughts on this from people doing similar stuff.
I realise that's probably not a large cross-section of people though, LOL
Jus gunna let this thread rest soon, delete from my readerlist, & move on.
Before that, in depth thoughts from interested parties would be appreciated.

SIM Cardless Optimization

I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example
furthermore - wrong section

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

[Q] In way over my head regarding a Android stick (Mk809III)

Hi guys
First of all, I am not a programmer.. Not even very tech savyy, so if "ordinary" people isn't allowed to ask around here, I apologize. I would also like to mention that english isn't my primary language, so also please forgive me for my bad english.
My problem is that I am in wayyy over my head. I bought an android (hdmi)stick over Ebay and actually kind of expected it to be plug and play. After a bit of playing around and reading up on it I realize that this is far from the case.
The item is an Azurill MK809III
I have the following problems:
When I am trying to use apps that requires a rooted device, they say it isn't rooted. When trying to use apps that doesn't allow rooted devices, the app says it is. I am quite convinced that it is, but I don't know why various apps (also apps which only purpose is to check for root) says it isn't. I would, solely for that reason like to find another (still mediacenter-friendly) rom.
I also find the movies kind of choppy. According to various posts on the internet, it's because of a problem in the way the stock "kernel" handles things. I've read various recommendations of which alternative kernel that should be used. I don't know if another rom will solve this problem also?
The problem is that it's a JUNGLE out there. I honestly don't know how to flash a rom, and when reading up on it it seems VERY complicated. I know from earlier escapades that tech-things often look more complicated in writing, but what worries me the most is that all the guides that I found includes some kind of code.. Is that Linux? And does that mean that I need to have a computer running Linux to do this?
I am a totally virgin when it comes to tampering with things on this level.. I honestly thought it would be a nice "out of the box" alternative to a Chromecast, but boy was I wrong.
Can anyone save me? Either by guiding me through the whole process or maybe just tell me if this is possible without Linux and pointing me in the right direction(s)? I fell over something called "Rockchip Batch tool", but I don't know if that can be used for the process or only to flash back to the stock rom (or maybe I totally misunderstood what its for)
I am of course kind of afraid of breaking my device, so I don't dare to start following some guide on my own initiative, unless someone assured me that it is the right thing to do.
Thank you in advance.. :fingers-crossed:

Looking for help on an archaic platform

A long time ago, when PDAs were still around, there was a guy named Gattobus who cooked up several ROMs for the PXA310 driven devices like the IPAQ210. These roms would load everything from WM6.0, 6.1, even 6.5 on to such devices using a formatted SD card. I can still find the original links to these ROMS but the downloads are all broken.
Is there anybody out there who still has a copy on their machine of the optimized english 6.0 rom? This was the same OS as the one that comes native with the IPAQ 210 but it was cleaned up for more memory, better performance and some stuff was fixed which was broken initially. I used to have it but can no longer find it. Please if you have it, I would appreciate your kindness to share it so I can archive it for good.
Sorry for posting in the wrong forum but I couldn't find a suitable one and I remember XDA forums being active in these devices back when they were in use. Thank you.
Nobody knows? This is the original link but it doesn't work now:

Indeed. I just thought over all these years, somebody would have backed it up on their hard drive and would be able to post a copy. It's what I usually do with such files, although not this time unfortunately. Back in the day, WM6.0 was a popular enough platform that I'm sure many people who frequent these forums today would have downloaded it.

Once the hardware reaches the point where it's obsolete, so then does the software. Obsolete software isn't maintained and people that don't have or don't use the device anymore have long since deleted it because they didn't need it.
I'd be surprised if there were alot of those devices being used or even still functioning. Things break down, especially electronics and especially batteries. Replacement parts get hard to come by, especially batteries because they are the most commonly replaced part and probably discontinued so that limits the supply of how many are left.

I guess I'm weird then because my ipaq210 is in pristene condition and I still use it a ton. Also there were many devices that used that OS so the user base should be huge. Granted, as you said, most people just blew the files away and moved on but there are those like me who hoard stuff so I was banking on the numbers.
