If you are wondering what the hell [LEWLSWSE] stands for, Then your should know it stands for
"Life's Easier With Linux-Swap With Some Extras"
At first this thread was a hella lot of info and my opinions but, alot of people found this thread to be corrupt,stupid,pointless,G1bricking, and a hec of alot of typos. So I'm finally re-editing it to be Better than what it was before.
(oh yeah and for those who found the typos(as in bad commands) Thank You!) I was usually editing from my phone at like 1 in the morning so please don't be angry. And sorry for the bad language I've been qute furious the past week, due to the heat here in cali.
To start,
Linux-Swap( I want a faster Hero/Cupcake!!!! Is what your Saying )
1st things first
I'm not going to tell you whats the best Linux-Swap Size is, because mainly, I don't have your G1's. And all g1's are different and respond better, to certain size swaps. So pretty much I'm going to just give my G1's results and what was perfect for me and what ran better for ME, not you because like i said YOU have to find that sweet spot on your G1
and for me that sweet spot is 96mb.
Cupcake ROM's 4 Me:
For me all cupcake ROM's were perfect(kinda), I'm not gonna mention names here but in majority for a super highly responsive cupcacke.
Use 64mb
Hero ROM's:
In majority Hero ROM's need a swap. period.. because there super resource hoggers and require alot of G1 power/stuff to be running smoothly, plus the fact that it wasn't ment to be on a G1.(but that will soon change) Thanks to all the devs.
Anyways for me any pretty much all of the Hero ROM's, i found that 96mb is perfect for pretty much any, mainly because from everytime of flashing back and fourth on my G1 i found that 96mb was in the lead no matter what i did. And even though i felt dumb trying to outsmart the ROM cookers, I was successful, and was able to run a stable Hero for about a week, but longer then that i wouldn't know because, i quit the testing figuring it was perfect
In general Use 96mb
Now everybody remember this is MY G1 not yours
My G1 may and does act differently then your does. So you would have to find the sweet spot your self to find out what best for you,
In my opinion the majority of the dream owners find that 96mb was perfect for any ROM Cupcake/Hero
Basically 96mb is perfect for Someone who switches back from cupcake to hero, so its kinda hybrid like those ugly @ss cars you see on the street
And for me I guess im using a Hybrid Swap because i find, myself switching from stable cupcake to sluggish(remember thats ISH) Rosie. TO see how shes been doing(Kinda Better)
Am so yeah Linux-Swap play around with it find your G1's sweet spot
Its not that hard its actually quite easy, So have fun!
Anyways here the extras as i meantioned in the title.
(How to)Formating your SD, Then reformating it to fat32/ext2/linux-swap
How to Format(meaning everything deleted) your card using recovery console
however this is only through Cyanogens Recovery so if you don't have it, Get at it!!! HERE!!!
Right Click to save as .img
http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/cm-...m/sd/*
and yes that is a star don't forget it
Need more info like (Hero)
1. How many screens do you use
2. What, if any widgets do you use
3. How many app icons (if any)
4. Do you use Mail or just gMail
5. How many apps are installed
I think all this is relevant due to the fact that the more stuff you have running will cause it slow down. What I mean by running? Well do you have Mail,Tweeter, Weather and so on, set up which checks for updates at timed intervals.
Wow. Seriously wow. Thank you for your research. Your scientifc approach rivals any I've ever seen. To put this in the language you used in the OP, I like (idk) can't believe I read the entire thread? I think.

It helped me.
I have a 92mb swap and have to agree, it does help... although i still some rare loading screen(class4 sd). anyone tried over 110MB swap?
thank you for your efforts!
i have learned and will benefit from your work.
ok first things first
1 @ @ssHoles if you have nothing better to say then dont say it
2. if you guys are being smart @sses please tell me cuz on a forum its hard to tell rather or not you being sarcastic
3. Here welcome to all those that really think it helped
4.Thank you for the suggestions
5. 110mb?? esta loco!!! i havent tried
and really dont want to try, ive heard swap many times within the last 4 weeks im about to swap my hand with a gun and *BOOM*
but yeah 11omb if you wanna try it for me
then please do so
run all the widgets(if possible) and see what happens
and if you try it out for set the swappiness to 60 or 80
THis is a friendly forum and people don't mean any hard. Everyone needs to just chill out and enjoy this great thread and ignore other comments. Why should a comment on the internet bother you? Don't take offense to something written on a forum people. Come on people you guys are above this. Just read, post your opinion, and respect other's opinions. BTW after reading this all I need is bluetooth and fully functioning LEDs to run Hero now. Thanks jf4888!
as far as Swap partition is concern you should NEVER make it bigger than the actual RAM of your computer/phone.
So if the HTC Dream has 192MB of RAM (but only 98MB are free/usable/recognized by the OS) that means the linux-swap CAN be set to 96MB but it SHOULD NOT go any higher dont be absurd..
i've used 96MB with no problems "although it might become unstable in a long run".
so if you wanna use 96mb go ahead.. it will run just fine!
and if you like been a little superticious 192MB + 96MB ' linux-swap ' = 288MB (same of Hero's memory capacity) your Hero ROM might think you have the actual phone
gl hf
Waiting for answers to my questions please!
I have read people say "My hero is on crack, its so fast" only to find out they only use 1 or 3 screen and no widgets.
I personally tried 32, 96 and now on 64
I found 96 to work for a few days, mind you I was overclocking it and was using task killer and auto starts to modify what's runs at start up and killing apps every time I went home just to keep it running smooth. Pain ass! (And yes I excluded TouchFlo from task killer)
So I went with 64 and by far its more reliable and I have NOT used autostarts or task killer.
I I have NOT seen a htc or loading since boot up.

Mike has an excellent point... the fact is that everyone's phone is different, so while 30 swappiness on compcache, for example, is optimum for my phone, he may run at 25 to be as fast. I have to agree with his overall position, and I take exception to how you started off your original post. You don't know what's best for everyone else's phone.
Essentially, your results only apply to your phone. At best they're a good starting point for the rest of us... but that's it.
Aside from that, I'm surprised that many people are even running linux-swap partitions still... old tech.
Thank you this helped, I was using a larger swap then 32mb on JacxHero and was getting crazy FC errors like you said... now I know why it happened and can switch back to that rom later if I want.
How long did you run at each of these settings? What were you running? Was your setup even close to the same between the different ROMs? Which applications were your testing?
If you are using a 96Mb swap you better reboot your phone a lot or it is going to get really laggy. Ask Drizzy. He even posted on his twitter to everyone to stop whining that Hero slows down after a few days if they are going to use a 96Mb swap.
If you are using anything but Hero you should not be using swap at all. Compcache with backing swap is MUCH more efficient than regular Linux Swap. Maybe I should start a thread that says Don't Use Linux Swap with cupcake ROMs.

Linux Swap is worse on xROM than any other ROM I have tried it on.
Why don't people listen to the recommendations of the developers who are cooking the ROMs?

I'm sure your intentions are good but your method sucks. You have provided no details to what you did, how you did it, or why. If you want to explain exactly what you did and how you benchmarked your results that would be great. If you are just going to say "I tried this setting and it 'felt' faster" you are wasting your time. Did you use any benchmarking software? Did you run any specific processes and time them?
Cupcake vs. AOSP
Cupcake ROM's:
Cyanogens Mod's: From stable to unstable etc...
I found that with his ROM's you really dont need a huge partition(Kinda Obvious) and that pretty much running his ROM on any swap size
32,48,64,96,... is good it actually just gets better(for me).
So in General: Use a 64mb partiton, its perfect.

JacXROM: This ROM actually doesn't need a swap(Its an AOSP) thats why but i just tested it out to see what happend, i actually found that it slowed down, after surpassing 32mb partition, for some reason it lost its snap and eventually became crazy, and forced me to flash back to cyan becuase of a crazy FC error with a bigger swap :/ ??.
So in general for Jacx Use a 32mb partition

@jf4888 - What is the difference between a cupcake build and an AOSP build? Why does one need swap and the other one doesn't? Please explain this to me.
Edit: I'm sorry if you feel like I am being an jerk. I just hate to see people post threads where they give people misleading information, which you have. You lost all credibility with your post when you started saying that Cyan and xROM are different because one uses AOSP and the other uses cupcake. Not to mention your post was poorly worded and you added "I don't know" about things that you are claiming to know about. If I'm wrong and you can prove that you have found a magic configuration that works - prove it. Back up your findings with your method. Show us your work. Give us the details that we need to reproduce your findings.
If anyone would like some help getting their ROM running faster feel free to PM me. I haven't had a chance to tune anything for Hero but my configuration works really well with xROM and Cyan.
very nice thread
im currently using 32mb and hit a loading screen if i like leave peep on and my phone goes to sleep thats prob the only time
other than that im good
ill wait till drizzy drops the new hero and try out 96mbs and will load the phone with widgets and will post results
so far really nice thread
thanks for the hard work

Hi all,
I've been away from here for quite awhile, but I spent a bit of the little spare time I have now playing with android. I took a look at the dalvik code in the froyo branch of AOSP and found some small optimizations that could be made in the implementation of some atomic functions. In particular, I found that the marcos in atomic.h could be changed:
MEMORY_BARRIER() just emitted some empty inline assembly with a "memory" clobber. I replaced this with the ARMv7 "dmb" (data memory barrier) instruction which implements a barrier in a single instruction.
ATOMIC_SWP_CMP() called some function in bionic which appeared to invoke a series of function calls that would make a syscall into kernel_cmpxchg. I decided to write my own atomic cmpxchg function using LDREX and STREX and put it in atomic.S.
Also, I noticed there might have been some branches to generate log messages scattered around even with debug turned off, so I undefined all the LOG macros and replaced them with my own do nothing macros -- the compiler would then optimize out those branches -- in addition, there is the added benefit that the binary is smaller since those debug strings are deleted (there are a few left that I have to check...)
I may/may not have time to support any of this as my time permits, but I have uploaded the modified source, as well as a update.zip that works fine in CWM2/3 here:
http://www.nuerom.com/libdvm/dalvik.tar.gz
http://www.nuerom.com/libdvm/update.zip
The usual disclaimers apply: it could brick your phone, cause loss of data, etc. I'm not responsible.
I've tested it on the epic4g, it should work fine with any other phone running froyo as well. Well, except multicore processors (exposed to android), since I don't think dmb works as a memory barrier with smp.
edit:: tested on ec05 rooted w/cwm.
Nice work!
If we install the update.zip is there a way to go back to stock?

Why, please tell me why, did you just HAVE to include that second part of your post? Needy, needy, needy...it isn't even on topic.
On a lighter note, yes, Id like to understand this mod as well lol. Sounded like its for AOSP roms like cm7...just don't know what it is.
And build me a new phone, and make me dinner, and hold my hand! :rolls eyes:

I tested it on a rooted stock ec05 w/cwm. I dont really know what implications it will have except possibly better performance in some cases. The lack of any useful good benchmark package (w/documentation) on android makes it difficult to quantify... probably will have to write one myself, although i observed a .1 increase in "linpack" stddev over 30 runs. in short, atomic locks are probably where some of the vm wastes its time, this reduces that fraction by some percent....

What about GLBenchmark and Smartbench? I think the creator of smartbench browses xda so he can provide documentation probably..

Nice to see you again no2chem! You HAVE been away from us for a long time. Hopefully you're back to help us a bit. I'll definitely be willing to test out anything you throw at me since your work on the TP2 vastly improved the phone's performance.
I'll let you know how this stuff works out.
Test driving this. Will report back if anything blows up.
Edit: so far it's working well no issues to report.

Well, there's some very particular things about what I modified that I'd like to test, something like smartbench is too general, I think - it introduces too many variables into measurement for my purposes.
For example, I made some optmizations to some atomic operations. These are used by the dalvik cache. A small microbenchmark to test the speedup in the dalvik cache or other subsystems of dalvik would help greatly... but how to write a benchmark of the dalvik cache? Dalvik has some built in tests, but i don't know how to access them and I probably disabled them by erasing all debug output anyway =D.
I also managed to update some parts of the froyo bionic with some parts of the gingerbread bionic. Can't tell any speed difference, but some functions like strcmp have been improved with assembly versions. For those who don't know, bionic is "libc" for android - it contains a lot of subroutines that many programs call, making it a good target for optimization since a lot of android uses it - same thing with dalvik. I'll upload the new bionic later.

maybe; I'm having a hard time getting used to the whole android build system. I tried to port nueusbkeyboard the other day; wasted almost 2 days and realized that the whole thing wasn't possible without distributing an updated kernel with the app! =( well, maybe there's still hope as I need to figure out how to deregister the stock usb-gadget driver from the interface cleanly.. but yeah...

After running it for a few days, That was after I had to change my good working busybox to an older one that caused issues. I didnt see any change other then it closing apps that it had no point in closing. Android has one of the best memory management systems and its best not to mess with it a bit much. I have had a few people run it on my set up and they ran into the same issues. While I agree that is may work on some roms, it is not for every rom.

I have been lurking the forums here for a bit, and I have not come up with a definite answer. I am using ARHD (XE based) 3.6.7 and love how nice and smooth my phone has been acting.
I was wondering though, is it possible to de-activate or completely remove from the phones storage the extra languages that it has the option for? I really only need the english pack, and might keep on one or two other languages if I am able to remove them, but I do not know what to go about doing so.
So the point of this thread is to get to the bottom of these questions:
1. Can you remove the extra languages?
2. If yes to question 1, Will it just be de-activating the packs, or removing them from the internal memory?
3. How do I go about doing this, if it's possible.
Thanks for your time

Hi,
It is worth looking at ROM CLEANER as a way of removing all sorts of bloat and crap that you do not want on your ROM.

Hi,
Open the ROMCleaner_User.txt and put a "#" in front of everything you do not want to remove.
This may take a while the first time you do it,but once you have configured the ROMCleaner_User.txt ,it takes seconds to clean up a ROM.
I understand that you want to control what is removed and what stays in,but this program does that for me.
I think that using a program like ES File Explorer might be able to remove the apk. that you do not want.
I guess ROM Cleaner is for HTC only and not Samsung, is it?

#1 no American or Canadian English setting (on initial setup, and under language settings)
#2 where's the Beats Audio?
Still love it, though. Noticeable difference in speed without background apps, and much better internal storage. Also, mildly improved battery life.

It's based on the stock EU ROM, so no, there's no American or Canadian English. I could add them but it'd add to the size of the system or no real reason. I'm sure you can live with the Queen's English
The Beats Audio doesn't show up anywhere in the UI, it just works its magic in the background. I even notice a difference when I use it with my cheap £20 eBay headphones so I know it's working
If you've seen other ROMs with the Beats Audio showing up as a setting on the UI, that's probably because they have the Music app from ROMs of newer phones. I might see if I can get that ported to my ROM now, come to think of it. Thanks for that idea
P.S. to further improve battery life, go to your sound settings and turn off all the sensor based stuff if you haven't already, that makes quite a difference!
Hmmm...haven't noticed a difference with my 20 buck Panasonics, or in my car, though that's with an FM transmitter (a good one, though).
I guess I'll live with the Queen's English, though the patriotic side of me cringes, eh?...
Weird, maybe it depends on the music you listen to. Stuff with heavy bass sounds better at least
God save our gracious Queeeeen
I just tried to stick the /system/apps folder from a Sensation XE onto my ChaCha... The ChaCha didn't like it too much. I'll experiment more later, see what I can get working. Looking around the XE ROM, there's certainly stuff here which shows whether or not Beats is working in the actual UI, so I might add some of that in if it plays nice with the ChaCha.
Cool! Thanks for all your work. Is it possible to move these posts to your thread in the development forum, so others can see what's going on?

Also, the facebook key doesn't work anymore. Can this be sorted out in an upcoming relase--is it possible to have the key open up the Tinfoil app?

A moderator would have to do that, but yeah, mods if you're reading this, moving these posts into my Stock Plus thread would be helpful, cheers

That's something else I'm looking into. I know it can be done, others have done it, I've just got to edit the right files in my ROM so it goes to Tinfoil.
I promise I'll start posting there once I cross this ten post threshold. I understand why they do it, and it clearly has an effect on the quality of the posts, but it's still annoying .

To confirm, I am going to try and implement a fix to the dialler bug this week when I continue work on my ROM. My first priority is Aroma at the moment but it's on my list of things to do.

Glad to hear that. Ur ROM was my 1st ROM i installed after Root this device.
Original ROM is good for user who have less experience in Android or someone love Sense UI of HTC. CM7 is only good for Tech guys.
Stock ROM feel on CM7?
I have been using Chacha for almost half year now, and I like it to core. Have tried almost all ROMs so far. CWM's backup/restore functionality is pure bliss. At times when your hands are itchy, go ahead, mess up your system, do all your experiments. When done, just restore and you are back to your normal mood! Excellent!!
About the ROMs, I try them a lot, but finally do settle down to ROMs based on stock, as my daily ROMS. These are ROMS which I try my own with some experimental versions, or ones available here like from Hexgore . The reason is, there are quite a bunch of apps on Stock ROMS which are perfectly tuned for Chacha's small screen, and hence I find them more efficient than other alternative apps. Here are apps I find too good and difficult to part from.
Mail App
Dialer App
Messages App
I agree that there would be a lot better apps (like K9 for mail). But the easy of bigger icons, easy to tap organization of icons, just make be feel to stay with this mail app.
Now, coming to point, Will it be possible to get these apps work in non-Stock environment. Similar to Gapps package, if we can get to package these apps, it will be great.
I myself, will try these experiments one by one, and report my observations. But just would like to know if there are any like-minded people like me. Please comment. Thanks.
