I'm looking for an app that can read my epub books aloud.
I've tried this one ( https://market.android.com/details?id=v00032.com.wordplayer&feature=search_result ) but the voice is just plain text to speech; the voice is downright awful. Not only that, but there's no pause, and it only starts at the beginning of a chapter.
I know Moon+ also does it, but it's $5. Has anyone used the text to speech on it and can comment on how well it works? I'd love to hear how it sounds, but I haven't found any videos on YouTube etc of this feature being used. If the voice is just as bad as WordPlayer, I'd rather not waste the $5. And 15 minutes seems too hasty to test this out.
Is there any other way to have epub books read aloud via some Android app?
if yuor talking about that female sounding death voice then it's android itself that does it. I dunno if theres a way to change it.

Aye, just found the "SVOX" ones. But very very expensive....
Yes, SVOX Classic. Each language pack costs $3
But still you will not get a feel of audio books. The book reading app needs to incorporate some intelligence.

Just the native one, as provided by Mr. Fluffy
It is basic, I suppose, but at the end o th day I just need something that pulls stuff off the 'net - I mostly download podcasts to listen to later, that kinda thing.
Exactly the same as me, also monitoring some torrent trackers!
I just remembered about viigo. I had a BlackBerry Pearl and used to use that for downloading podcasts and different feeds from the net. Check it out, it's a good app, easy to use, pretty user friendly - and free
Cheers
i use upvise www.upvise.com
it is very fingerfriendly, you can manage it on pc or pocket pc and has a low need of transfer.
I use opera mini 5 and it has a pretty handy built in RSS reader.

... that have a button to skip forward/backward 5-10 seconds with a single button press?
Google's Listen app does this, but unfortunately cannot play mp3s downloaded outside of the app.
TouchMusic can kind of do this, but... it's just a horrible app...
Anyone know of an app that does this?
Doesn't the default app do this? if you hold down the buttons instead of pressing quickly.

Holding is not a button press. I specifically said button press for a reason
Also, I'm on the Desire ROM which doesn't have the holding functionality anyway.

Ok seriously people. This is EXACTLY what I was talking about just a few days ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6003685#post6003685
I am asking for a very simple and specific request. Please stop telling me to do other things which are obviously not what I asked in the original post. Jesus F'ing Christ!!
GAH!!!
Using the bar to move backward 10 seconds in a 90 minute file is frustrating and almost impossible, especially when driving, running, or any other time when I don't want to fiddle around with trying to move the bar one tenth of a millimeter.
Does anyone have any input on the actual question that I asked?
sorry no.. if you find one let me know please.. i am looking also.. the built in app is crap.
no equilizer..
no effects...
no add to playlist other than one song at a time.. etc. etc.
the music player in my older i8910 is much better.

I suggest you file a enhancement request here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list .
You shouldn't expect everyone to analyze your every word.

No, but I have some input on life: Stop being a sperglord about volunteers offering alternative suggestions that work on the actual issue and not the very specific implementation you requested. If you don't like it, you can stop posting.

I don't like your attitude or your swearing when people try to help you.
People understood clearly, and are offering alternative ways, unless they knew that such a thing existed. Don't like it, stop posting.

Analyze my every word? It was worded quite clearly, and I even bolded it.

Sounds like you are looking for a mp3 player that might cater more toward audio books/ podcasts.
I needed something similar recently, I think AudioBook Player or MortPlayer Audio Books might do the trick. If those don't work, check other apps that handle audio books in mp3 format.
It's 2010, why are you still running around with a single 90 minute mp3?

Perhaps muncheese has never heard of a podcast?
I try not to spend hours at time listening to other people's opinions.
I've never "understood" the appeal of podcasts, so I wasn't aware they don't even have the decency to organize them neatly for listeners.

There's more than just opinions. You can listen to news too, among other topics
http://www.npr.org/
Or not into news either? : P
You have to sign up for the google group but the app is now available as a beta!
Get it HERE!
DUDE! So, awesome! I've got hella books to catch up on.

They are narrated books. You know, for ppl that don't have time to read.
Too bad the books are expensive. The only feasible option is to pay 15 a month to get a book a month. They are narrated well though.
I have AVX on my Note (which, by the way, isn't working so great. It's pretty unusable. Others are using it, so I imagine I'm doing something wrong, but the settings aren't very intuitive, and I can't really figure out how to tweak it to make it recognize my voice better). Anyway, I have that and a couple of voices and what I'd really like to do is to have it read ebooks to me. Is that possible? Do I need a specific reader? Mostly, my ebooks are epub format, I believe, and I've been reading them with the Nook reader app for Android, as I came from a Nook Tablet, originally.
Thanks in advance.
I use Moon Reader+ and it can read the text out to you. Not sure if free version does that, but paid does.

If the books are in pdf format, ezpdf can read it out too.
Cool reader will read epub books but the voice is a cheap computer voice and I don't know if other voices are available.
