[Q] UnRooting and Roms - General Questions and Answers

I was just wondering if I were to UnRoot my phone...would my custom rom disappear or would I eff up the phone real bad? Vibrant US btw.

in sony ericsson's case
for my phone, all i do is go through Sony Ericsson Update Service on the computer, and everything flashes back to stock.

What would happen would depend on what phone you have, I guess... For some HTC phones, if you S-Off, perhaps a custom ROM may still give you root, but if I understand it right, you can't make changes stick to the system partition.
To really remove root, I think you'll have to revert to stock.

u will b able to unroot ur rom by "z4root"..
but u will loose access to system files and other customization..
ur rom will b similar to the stock rom..
but if unrooting is what u intend to do then i would suggest that u restore nandroid backup (or go back to stock rom somehow) then install "z4root" and then unroot it..

help! rooting question

Hi all,
My evo is way too power consuming. I am thinking to root it to Android 2.2 to see if the power consumption can be improved. If not, I would return my evo.
My question would be if I "root" my evo, if my warrenty will still be valid?
Is there any way I can backup my current whole system and restore it if I find the rooted 2.2 doesn't work well?
I am new to android world.... Thanks for your help.

idk anything about going to 2.2 with the evo, havn't read anything about it cept in the overclock thread about performance.. if u root, u void ur warranty, but u can always unroot, yes u can backup ur current whole system and restore if u happen to mess up something, follow the stickys on the android development section. you posted ur question in the wrong section. there are alot of steps that needs to be taken before u can decide to move foward. make sure u download htc sync from the website, these drivers will keep u from a huge headache when trying to do adb later on.
I would skip the whole bit about backing up your phone. To get it back to factory status you just have to flash the original Sprint ROM and your unrooted.
This is in the wrong section, and its a simple question that is answered in almost any "rooting" FAQ on the web. I would say try doing a search next time.
Rooting voids your software warranty. If your phone bricks (unlikely, but possible if you cant follow instructions) and can no longer turn on, you're out of luck. Technically nothing is wrong with the phone hardware wise but you can't do anything with a bricked phone.
If you want to go back to stock rom make sure you do a NAND backup right after you root (go read about this, guides are all over the forum) in case you mess up with roms. And as the above ^ stated, its easy to go back to stock rom unrooted (sprint stock rom), just flash that.

[Q] Need to revert to Froyo without rooting

I need to revert my G2X from Gingerbread back to Froyo due to the newer OS making my camera worthless. My problem is twofold:
A: I am very tech development unsavvy, and
B: I don't want to root my phone, as this will void the warranty.
I've seen a few options around the forums, but don't completely understand the tech language, and I am unsure how invasive the software changes will be.
Any takers out there who can clear this up for me and walk me through the process?
You can download rom manager and restore this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196019
But if you stuck in boot loop,be ready to flash NVFlash. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644
You can always unroot your phone by using clock work recovery to restore to stock and then use nv flash to flash the stock recovery and then your back to how you bought the phone.
You don't have to go back to froyo they successfully ported the stock LG camera to gingerbread and you don't even have to be rooted to do it. You do have to use nvflash to install clockworkmod. It is so easy even I did it and I am new to android. As far as I know it Wil not void your warenty plus even if you have to send it back you can use clock work mod to flash stock recovory. That is your best bet. If you WAnt help just pm me and I will guide you through.

[Q] some clarification about rooting pls

Would appreciate some clarification about the rooting thing. I've read and rooted my HTC sensation...S-off and clockwork. Have a few questions that I would like to clear up:
1) when a new OTA update is available for example...can I actually just install that instead of flashing a rooted ROM? I understand that I will lose root...but can't I just reflash the superuser file to obtain root again? Or must I use a rooted ROM or custom ROM.
2) right now, I am using the ROM that came with the phone and only went through the rooting process. If I want to keep this ROM as an original so I can go back to...do I have to back up this one now? I've done a Nand backup in clockwork before I rooted it as instructed...can I simply use that and then flash the SU file again if I ever want if I want to stay on this current ROM after I change it?
3) I performed backup using titanium backup including apps and system data...does that include all the contacts info?
4) finally, what exactly is Radio and Kernel? Do I need to change it...from what I read, if things are working...I don't need to change anything right?
Thx for clarifying this. I've read various threads but haven't gotten a clear answer to these questions.

1. You could, but the ota could include some security changes or something making it hard to achieve root again. Easiest to just flash a pre rooted ROM that includes the updates
2. Yes that would work, but why not create a backup after root instead?
3. Tb can backup contacts, but the file might not be compatible with newer roms due to software changes. I just let google keep mine, that way the ROM doesn't matter
4. by radio we mean the software that is connecting your phone to the mobile network using the physical radio. Sometimes newer version can be more effective, and some are region specific. Between the radio and the ROM is the ril (radio interface layer), which helps the two interact. The kernel is the layer of software that directly controls the hardware of the phone (battery drain, cpu frequency and governor, all that stuff). rarely is changing any of that stuff necessary, but some of us just want to tweak everything we can
Thx for the clarification.
What to you mean by pre-rooted ROM? Wouldn't I need a rooted ROM now that my phone is rooted or it'll lose root?
As for the backup...yeah.. so if I perform a NAND now..it would be a rooted version of the ROM right? And it'll have all the contacts as well?
Thx

I meant when an update comes along, instead of all the effort of UN rooting, updating, and re rooting, just wait for a dev to post a ROM with the update cooked in. Much easier, less work = less risk of a problem.
And yes

[Q] A pre-noob question

I am very new to the android world. my question is about the version of Lite'ning rom I should use?? My understanding is that I need not to have a rooted phone to use this? Good mine ain't rooted. Here is a pic of everything I think will help.View attachment 837063 Sorry about my literacy or lack of it.
You have to be rooted to run any custom rom.
download SuperOneClick and root your device, then install the ROM.
I'm actually scared to root because of the 'bricking' thing. I know nothing about this stuff. Will I mess up?? what to do after, if successful, etc.
Do the research. You can't run a custom rom if your not rooted. If it worries you so much maybe you should stay stock. Custom roms are not for everyone. There are risks and there are bugs that dev try to fix but each device is different and if bugs happen you need to be able to find and work out fixes for it.
Those that just root and flash without knowing what they are doing are bound to be mad when they brick their device.
Rooting is pretty easy but I would avoid flashing a new rom if your worried about rooting as it is more difficult and you need to be very sure what your doing first.

You mean i can root my phone and keep the stock rom?? The reason for me wanting to do this is the Bloatware that is installed on it. Will I be able to get rid of them??

Yes just root the device and buy Titaium back up pro and you all good to go.
You can do it without TIBU pro but it just makes it easier

If I rooted my phone..

Hello everyone, I want to ask if I rooted my phone will my original ROM stay or not ?? and if yes I can still update it like it's unrooted ??
Your original Rom will be untouched, if you install a custom recovery you will not be able to install the OTA updates, if you update you will probably loose your root
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
yes on both. but do make a backup if you every want to change it back to the original.
After you do S-OFF, flash the recovery (CWMR 5 or 4ext) and backup your current ROM and save it. You can also find the shipped rom over the internet
I remembered i proper jobbied myself when i first rooted my HTC Desire. I thought i'd get taken to jail lol.
If you don't like the idea after its done, you can always re-install the stock rom from these forums, and all will be well.
However, once you get into this stuff, you'll wonder why you didn't sooner
