help! rooting question - EVO 4G Android Development

Hi all,
My evo is way too power consuming. I am thinking to root it to Android 2.2 to see if the power consumption can be improved. If not, I would return my evo.
My question would be if I "root" my evo, if my warrenty will still be valid?
Is there any way I can backup my current whole system and restore it if I find the rooted 2.2 doesn't work well?
I am new to android world.... Thanks for your help.

idk anything about going to 2.2 with the evo, havn't read anything about it cept in the overclock thread about performance.. if u root, u void ur warranty, but u can always unroot, yes u can backup ur current whole system and restore if u happen to mess up something, follow the stickys on the android development section. you posted ur question in the wrong section. there are alot of steps that needs to be taken before u can decide to move foward. make sure u download htc sync from the website, these drivers will keep u from a huge headache when trying to do adb later on.

I would skip the whole bit about backing up your phone. To get it back to factory status you just have to flash the original Sprint ROM and your unrooted.

This is in the wrong section, and its a simple question that is answered in almost any "rooting" FAQ on the web. I would say try doing a search next time.
Rooting voids your software warranty. If your phone bricks (unlikely, but possible if you cant follow instructions) and can no longer turn on, you're out of luck. Technically nothing is wrong with the phone hardware wise but you can't do anything with a bricked phone.
If you want to go back to stock rom make sure you do a NAND backup right after you root (go read about this, guides are all over the forum) in case you mess up with roms. And as the above ^ stated, its easy to go back to stock rom unrooted (sprint stock rom), just flash that.

Some extremely noobish questions

my dad is going to get me a samsung captivate for my birthday next week, and I really want to get the most out of the device. I have several questions that I could not find the answers to:
1. what is the chance that loading a custom rom will brick the device? I see a ton of disclaimers on rom pages and stuff. how dangerous is this?
2. can you fix a "bricked" captivate? is it possible to flash it back to stock, or does bricked mean perminatly dead?
3. how long will it be until there is a gingerbread rom? I wanted to get the nexus s, but I have to go att. how long will I have to wait for that gingerbread tastyness?
thanks for the help.

1. There is always a chance to brick your phone even if it is .00009% it is still there.
2. Make sure you can get into download and recovery mode with the 3 button combo. As long as you can get there then you can just about always recover no matter what you do to it. Key word being almost. There are also other ways to recover, look around and I am sure you will find them.
3. That part is still up in the air. Untill we get a full port. Right now we are still waiting (well at least some of us) for an offical 2.2 update let alone a 2.3 update.
Make sure you read at least the first page in the rom thread you are gonna flash for any extra instructions
so pretty much it is unlikely that I will brick it, and even if I do, it is possible to fix?

It is highly unlikely that you will brick it. Most bricks can be recovered from. The only time I have not been able to recover is when att did the OTA and it bricked my phone and I didn't know about jtag at the time so I sent back to att and it was replaced. Is it 100% umbrickable? No but i would say 99% as long as you read up first and follow the directions to a T you will be fine. I have flashed about 1500 times and nothing i could not recover from

thanks. I just wanted to make sure that it was fairly safe to modify, because the phone is not cheap, and it would kind of suck to brick the device 10min ito owning it.
ya I was the same way as you, kind of nervous about bricking my new phone. Just read up on all of the various rom threads. If you have a good idea what you're doing the chances of bricking should be quite small.
I agree (with all of the above) and there is an excellent how-to link to YouTube vids in the Development section (too late and heading to bed or I'd link it) that steps you through rooting and installing ROM. I've been there, done that but it's a great reference for anyone thinking about installing a custom ROM....nice to SEE someone do it to ease the fears.

Im new to all of this :-(

DONT DO IT IF U WANT TO USE UR PHONE FOR SOMETIME!!! COZ AFTER USING A ROM PEOPLE FACE LOT OF PROBLEMS.. OR PROBABLY BRICK UR PHONE, IN WHICH ITS BETTER TO THROW UR PHONE OUT THE WINDOW INSTEAD OF TAKING IT TO THE VENDOR COZ U WILL VOID THE TOTAL WARRANTY.. TRY AT UR OWN RISK!
try checking other topics or search within this website. i bet you'll find answers to those questions you are looking for right now.

Okay, not to be rude, but this is way off. The ALL CAPS really helps though.
Rooting my phone took only a few minutes. Backing up my current rom + flashing a new one = 15 minutes, tops. Plus, I couldn't imagine being back on the stock rom. My phone runs smoother, looks better, and does more than it could out of the box.
That being said, I'm not familiar with your phone, so the rooting process could be more difficult & lengthy. There are automatic root apps, but there are manual methods as well. Auto-root methods take less time & work, but when something goes wrong, it can be difficult to troubleshoot as you're not fully aware of what's happening. Manual methods require more work, and when something goes wrong there are more solutions because you're fully aware of the state of your phone. Another plus to doing it manually - you learn something.
For the record, rooting your phone is technically gaining access to system files. This includes the apps that come preinstalled, the framework, the entire operating system. There are many benefits to rooting, however you do void your warranty. You can return your phone to it's stock, non-rooted state if you need to take it in.
Before doing anything, I would read as much as possible. Read the stickies in the forum related to your phone, read any noob guides you can find, and be certain you know what you're doing before you do it. Also know why you're rooting - don't just do it because it's something that seems "cool".
Once you've read & found a method you're comfortable with, go ahead and root. Be sure to do a backup in recovery, and if you want to save your apps + data, back that up with Titanium Backup. Then download and flash the rom in recovery.
If you need anything else or have any questions (be sure to read first!) ask here or send me a pm & I'll be glad to help out.
Good luck!

[Q] Im very new to Android, root, bootloader?

Im very new and just switched over from webOS and have questions but im not sure if this is the right section to post if not sorry and bare with me.
Ok I have the NS4G just updated to 2.3.5. It killed tethering so I want to root to fix that problem.
Question #1... I did a little research before posting and I believe I need to unlock my bootloader then root it with SuperBoot?
Question #2... Is there more than 1 way to root my phone?
Question #3... Once rooted what do I do to actually get the tethering back. Do I download an app after the rooting if so is it in the market?
Question #4... What exactly is CM7 I see that in the forums everywhere. Is it important to have once you root your phone?
and finally #5... Will rooting my phone cause any problems with future updates, what are the pros/cons?
thanks guys I hear the Android community is as great as the webOS community.
1. Yeah, you need to unlock your bootloader to root
2. Yep
I used the standard way with pdanet and adb all that jazz, but now you are seeing more and more 1 click roots, superboot, etc.
3. I have no idea, I have gsm
4. CM7 is a firmware distribution of android, basically a type of custom rom you can install on your phone. A ROM is basically the read only memory, or os installed on ur phone. It's not important to have it, it's an option.
5. No, I don't have any problems with it. Just I think you need to make sure to go back to stock when there is an ota, or u wont get it

Thanks mathkid. How would I go back to stock and do I need to do any kind of backup before or after rooting? Im sure these are very stupid questions I just really want to learn everything before I attempt messing around with my phone.
I think BuglessPete has a thread on that, or you could look at michaelpeerman's thread as well.

[Q] Is it safe to assume...

First off, let me apologize for being a NOOB. I hate myself. HOWEVER, I watched the video and I'm following the rules. So go easy...
AFTER having ready TONS and TONS of post and threads, I have still not found a definitive answer to my question.
Is there a copy of the stock ROM (or RUU) for the HTC Doubleshot (aka myTouch 4G Slide) that is readily available?
I have had my phone for about a month and am now wanting to root. I would like to have a stock backup for warranty reasons (obviously). I have never rooted an Android. I have "jailbroke" many iPhones and in the begining I always had a backup just in case. Is this not a possibility right now for the HTC Doubleshot?

Don't hate yourself, everyone starts somewhere. Welcome to android, where a stock, un-rooted device is capable of much more then a jailbroken i-anything.
There are a couple of ways to go about getting a backup - click the link to backup guide in my signature to see how to go about making backups of your data (both through ADB and CWM).
If you want to grab a ROM file from the dev section, supposing you don't have your own backup:
In the dev section:
De-odexed stock repack
Stock - equivalent of a factory reset on a fresh device
And also, Undeadk9 made a stock version that is de-odexed, has root and so forth, check it out:
Stock - rooted, busybox, etc...
Also, once you get from S-ON to S-OFF there really is no way to go back, but it won't have any impact on your warranty or exchange ability if needed.
Thanks. I am looking forward to this. If you are referring to the Stock ROM uploading by UndeadK9 or PaulObrian ( i think those were the names) I have already kind of glanced over those. The DEVs made sure to mention that they weren't 100% stock and It was "flashing" at my own risk. I don't mind this. I am just worried that if I mess up somehow I won't be able to take it back to T-Mobile to get a new one because they will see that it has been rooted... I
The one that is the equivalent of a factory reset on a fresh device is what you would want to use, if you wanted to go back to stock, with an odexed ROM, and all.
Thank you for the help. I am reading the Backup Guide link in your signature right now...
I was following instructions on how to use the Revolutionary Method to root my phone. ALL that I did was download Revolutionary, The HTC Fastboot Drivers and I obtained my beta key from the website. I hooked up my phone on charge only with USB Debugging enabled. The program ran fine and it said successful. The next step was to power down and then do an HBOOT. HOWEVER when I hit selected power down, my phone shut off AND IT WONT TURN BACK ON! Help!
What do I do? Please help me... Did I just BRICK my phone that friggin easily?!?!?! =(... I could cry....
Turn your phone back on it should resume revs picks up where it left off normally. If it doesn't hit power and volume down at the. Same time that will bring you to hboot (skating androids) verify you have s off in the upper right it should say s off. Then reboot.
You should be fine. And if it won't turn on as in power up you may want to check your battery

noob needs help unrooting (superoneclick) to stock 2.2 frg22d

ok today i rooted my moto droid on 2.2 frg22d
i used superoneclick.
i have not downloaded any customs roms or kernals.
all i have done so far was get superuser, titanium backup, andross(screen cap)
a market launcher and themes
quick boot
after reading it said i needed to do a nandroid, but i boot in recovery mode i do not have the option to backup/restore.
i never manually installed an update.zip file unless SUC did it automatically.
i tried unrooting using the program and windows freezes around step 7, closing the program.
im really nervous i messed up my phone. i made a huge mistake, even though i have been doing some research. all i really wanted to do was take screenies and not so hard stuff.
i dont know how to flash anything and most of the tuturials are really confusing, is there anyway someone could send me detailed instruction to unroot to factory or whatever i just want the root gone, the rooted programs gone, and i just want the normal 2.2 frg22d back before i do anything to brick my device.
sorry if this is in the wrong forum, i read the hacking one saying if it isn't developement related it was likely ban me. please feel free to relocate this to a more appropriate destination, im just really lost with there being so many tutorials and guides. :/
