Well, guess what? My MT4G is about five hours old and there is already a spec of dust under the screen. On the phone with T-Mobile right now to do a swap. Why can't HTC figure out this dust issue? How hard is it to glue a phone together?
Update: T-Mobile had no problem swapping it for a brand new device because it was so new. Even after that dust under the screen is covered under the one year warranty.
I would just return it, I doubt that many have this problem.

A new one is on the way. I'm hoping this is not like my Nexus. Either way, that's what warranties are for.

Are we talking about extended warranty here? If so, sorry to burst your bubble, but the regular one year manufacturer's warranty will cover this also -- without having to shell out that extra $6 a month
I had grey specks under my screen and I made her the exchange the phone.. the sales girl (a teen ager!) said she didnt see anything, but when I showed it to her in the sun she said "I would never notice that" (like I as being anal! LOL!)
It was the WHITE version...
I've seen other reports of this too. Best to inspect well upon receipt or in store before leaving.
Mine appears to have an issue with the FFC - it looks to be off center to the right. Works fine, but a QC issue for a phone the caliber of this and not impressive for HTC.

I had a single spec of dust under the screen, upper left corner. the girl in the store saw it as soon as I showed a white screen. exchanged it for a new one right in the store, no questions asked.
manufacturing defect? I guess. hope the screen doesn't have some gap that allows in lint because I carry the thing in my pocket all the time.
yep...got a mytouch 4g/hd today aswell. didnt get a chance to play with it until now, about 6 hours later. Smack dab in the middle was what i thought was a dead pixel. upon further inspection its a particle of dust or whatever. super super annoying. i have to exchange the phone and hope this one doesnt have this problem.
any way of removing this foreign particle w/o voiding anything?

Mine is the same, but it doesn't bother me.
I got my mt4g yesterday. First thing I did was look for dust under the screen. Had another mt4g on the way within an hour of getting my first one. The bad part is I got my phone direct from Tmobile so I have to wait for it to arrive. On the brightside they did free express this time.
Anyone got any images showing this? I dont see anything on mine but its only a few hours old and I got it late at night and I'm so tired I'm not even inspecting it that much at the moment. Will go over it tomorrow.
i use to work on LCDs. Basically the clean room wasn't that clean when they were putting on the polarized layer. There is not anything practical you can do to fix it.
Anyone know who the OEM for the LCDs are?
never had that problem with any of my htc's

I never buy the extended warranty but I do get insurance. Considering how many times I've used it, it's been worth it.

No this is a QC issue. There are gaps between the metal bezel that surrounds the glass and the rubbery material that covers up the sides of the phone. The dust/lint that got under my screen was definitely from the device being in my pocket.
I solved this by getting a nice case from T-Mo ($35 but it's sexy) to cover the exposed area. Haven't had a problem since.
I was going to get a mytouch 4g to play with until the nexus s came out. I played with one at t-mobile store and nothing really impressed me. After reading the mytouch 4g thread it sounds like HTC is still making crappy phones. Sounds like the same N1 issues all over again. We used hairdryer to heat up the glass then press the screen back down. I had to do this will all three of my N1's.

Crappy phone? It's one of the best Android phones out right now. There are a FEW people having issues. Happens with every cell. Guess the MT4G isn't for you. I'm loving it!
I also have found a spec of dust it doesn't bother me but I'm worried that it'll get worse over time

I have the tiniest, most annoying lint particle underneath my screen. As of now it is located far left. Seems as if it could make its way to smack dab in the center of my screen though. Kinda sucks but its so tiny you only notice it in full contrast to a white background if you really focus.
a single grey speck of dust in the top right corner, near the clock. Thought it was a dead pixel, but its there even when the phone is off. can only see it if I look really hard into that spot
The paint on the kickstand is chipping away, but that's not really a big deal but now the back of the speaker is lifting up. The only thing I am afraid of is if they send me another phone it more then likely will be a refurbish unit and on top of that the phone that I have now don't really have any reboot problems. My XDA fellows what should I do?
Oh yea I know somebody going say I dropped my phone and etc, that's not the case I notice the build quality on this phone is not very good
I'd be leary given the rebooting issues, but to be honest I have faith in refurbs. Never treated me wrong.

Hang onto it for a little while. Might be fine.

VERY little. I assume you're just talking about the little plastic grate over it, in which case a little dab'll do ya just fine. Careful with that.
Keep in mind I don't own a TBolt yet, but I've been around the block with gadgets and gizmos.

Handle my phone very carefully....I notice the paint coming off the same day I purchased it. Never dropped my phone.
I came from the hd2 and imo it has way better build quality then this phone
I would just put a tiny dap of super glue if you go that route, also i have had good luck with refurbs over the years but i know several people that have not been so lucky unfortenetly.
Also if the kick stand is pealing hit it with a little sand paper and polish looks way better that way. Saw a post some one made in the general forum and it looked really nice so did it myself as well.
DO NOT USE SUPER GLUE!
My plastic speaker grill on my Bolt started to come up so I put some super glue on it thinking it'd stick it back down. WRONG! The glue started to come up through the small holes in the speaker grill and now it's very rough to the touch and I cannot remove it.
Also, the paint on my kickstand is also peeling, but that's not a problem. All you need to do is sand the paint of with a Scotchbrite Pad and then polish it. It looks better than new.

reason why I dont want to go the reboot route is because I am real scared to get a unit that's going reboot every sec. So far I am really not having much problems with this unit when it comes to rebooting. The speaker thing is really bothering me..its like when you a little kid and you keep on picking at your cut

I say that if you have not voided your warranty send it back. This is what a warranty is for.
If you get a phone that reboots all the time keep sending them back as well untill you get a working Thunderbolt. Enough people send the phone back for "real" warranty issues and maybe HTC will improve their build quality.
Sorry but just like dadsterflip said I'm very picking when it comes to cosmetic as well and what your describing would drive me nuts or I would just end up hating the phone.
I returned my first Thunderbolt because of the light leak at the bottom of the screen and made them open 4 brand new Thunderbolts to find one that did not have the same issue.

Yeah, that's what some dude on twitter told me he used to sand down his kickstand lol... I actually tried it a few hours after that post and it didn't work to well... maybe I was doing it wrong, though lol.
Got my refurbished phone yesterday and it rebooted five times today...I am sending it back and keeping this phone wit the broken speaker grill...I'm not getting another unit until they release the new update at the end of the month...couldn't hang up phone calls...couldn't put the phone on airplane mode....really disappointed with HTC and this phone...I can't wait till a better phone comes out
The coating on my kickstand started peeling like two days after I bought the phone. I've been peeling it off ever since. Definitely not a misuse scenario, just a poor coating. Doesn't really bother me since it'll all be gone soon anyways. I'd be a little pissed if the speaker grille started coming off though.
spoke to about three representatives and they said an updated is coming at the end of the month.....The speaker grill is really bothering me tho but I can't take swapping out refurbish phones just find a working unit...hopefully the new update fixes this issue
I heard the update is being released 6-15-11...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGxctvyhl0U&feature=related
I came across this.. lol Im gonna try it. Maybe some how line the inside of the cover from the top to the side so when in landscape the top of the foil is on the side of the cover/phone but still getting access to the wifi signal.. lol
I think this issue can be fixed if htc just redesignes the cover. It cant be that expensive. I bet if the some how do the same with metal, from the copper all the way to say both sides, no matter how you hold it should get signal. I think this could be fixed with a redesigned cover.
I know this is a funny thread, but seriously I havent tried it yet, but if it helps that just means they could design a new cover to work.

I wonder if you could somehow attach a piece of foil to the inside of the cover touching the gold antenna.

Maybe just little bit less foil on the gold prong. Would enhance the signal. While still being small enough to fit in the phone without effecting anything.

EDIT: Ok yall gonna think im crazy. But I held the phone with a towel reaaaaally tight over the wifi area, whole back, and etc. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wifi drop. Yea ok, conductor right? IPHONE issue? Well a case dont fix it? how come? so I decided to line my case (silicone I got from tmobile) with paper towel. LOL. I got two layers in it. Anyways, I wish my wife was here with Vibrina (my vibrant) to take a video for proof, but it works. Its muuuuch better. I could still probably kill the signal by covering completely or trying, but now I dont have to keep my hands in a certain spot.
TRY it.. LOL IT works for me. Ill post a video in about 4 hours of it. Before, while during and after to show its working. So Maybe a new case with some extra something will help? I dont know but if just a towel (one layer, the corner) can stop the issue completely, something has to be able to be done.
With my body glove on, I've never had any problems with wifi dropping.

I got the case from the TMO store where I bought the phone. It's the one made from soft black rubber, and the rubber is textured, feels almost like finger prints, so it's not slippery at all. It cost me $9.

Damn kinky ****.
I'm headed out now to test this on as many "wife areas" as I can find. BRB unless I get arrested...
My screen looks amazing, all the colors look well saturated, etc no ghosting that i know of. but there is one issue.. whenever i press on the right bottom corner the digitizer actually presses on the LCD and makes that weird magnitized look when you would press on a new TV LCD or laptop LCD.. if you have a laptop or new tv you should know what i mean lol. This exact thing happened on my old HD7 with the same size screen. i seem to have problems with phones with 4.3" screens lol. ive had every mytouch phone from htc and the g1 and none have had this problem. even my atrix didnt have this problem and its a piece of poo.
Does anyone else have this issue? i mean its not a HUGE issue since you never really press down the right bottom corner but still. it bugs the crap out of me knowing its there. i would hate to send it back and wait weeks without a phone too =/ i bought it from ebay for $270 used with scratches lol so i wonder if they dropped it or something.
another weird thing is when i take it out of the battery case the problem is even worse because the phone case is kinda loose so the screen pushes into the case? i might buy a case mate case and see if it stops the problem..
also, where the problem is.. the screen colors are still perfect. its just when i press in that area. id be fine with it if the problem didnt get worse. it did on my HD7 though
Just the way its made unfortunately. Case isn't gonna make a difference. What worked for me (not completely. gone but significantly reduced) was put a little piece Of paper in the case is that corner and ever since I haven't seen it. You have to press pretty hard to see it. Hope that helps.

thanks for reply. glad to see im not the only one with the problem though! i will have to try it, just a small piece on the right side or what? well i thought the case would work because it has part that cover the front. i know it wouldnt make the problem go away but it would make me or other people no able to press there.

Hi, I am considering the Photon Q as my next phone. I currently have the Motorola Defy PRO. It has many similar design elements with the Photon and this worries me. The bezel on the back side is made of the same rubbery plastic as in the photon. Currently on my phone it already started flaking a bit after less than an year use.
The other thing that also worries is me is the slide mechanism. Is it going to start wobbling after a few months or is it sturdy enough?
Any other observations of your use of the photon?
Thanks.
I bought my Photon Q used off of eBay in April. It came with cosmetic blemishes such as slight scratches and dings. However, I am quite satisfied with its sliding mechanism and wear. My phone is used daily without physical protection.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds good as I aslo do not like the phone "condoms" :highfive:
Unfortunately my Photon Q has fallen a few times...
The sliding mechanism still working but not very stable if the keyboard is "open"/phone is slided.
Well, it's not that hard, I only notice it if I push it downside a little. It still holds the position.
I also noticed that the screen isn't very stable if it's closed.
Not in the sliding direction, it's moving a little "up and down" if it's lying on a flat ground (table) and I tap on the screen.
I've also read about reports that some keys (like shift) were worn out.
It may be good to store a few often used keys. (Maybe a case too.)
I've had mine since mid-October.
The sliding mechanism isn't quite as "jumpy" or "springy" as it was on day one, but I'd say it is around 85% as springy.
Otherwise, mine shows so signs of wear at all other than the "usb" and "hdmi" text being rubbed off by the ports on the side.
I don't really baby my phone all that much, either.
My camera button is broken... almost little responsive...
My wife has had this phone since March or so, it's held up pretty well. She has issues with the software, but physically it's okay.
I've had my Q since launch back in August. Mechanically it's held up just fine, but the stock rom has been a little troublesome.
It seems to be built a bit better than my friend's Droid 4.
I've had mine since October and it's been fine, other than the flex cable ripping inside and having to replace it... which I believe was purely manufacturer fault.

I would have said, mine is as "springy" as it was in February, when I got the phone. But checking it twice, you are right...I vaguely remember how it sprang back in February...more than it does now! Good point!
Other than that I have a soft case around my phone, so it works very good after these first 4 month. Keyboard still is excellent!

I think I have been very lucky with mine so far... I set it in the window at home a lot and have dropped it more than a few times so far, even on cement. No cracks in the screen yet just a few nics in the bezel.

My phone has done well. slider works great. A few drops over the past year or so, but it keeps on ticking. I think its solid. Not the tank that my evo shift was, but I don't think anyone makes phones that solid anymore.
